Treating AIDS patients at home is just as effective as having them come into a clinic — and co

Treating AIDS patients at home is just as effective as having them come into a clinic — and considerably cheaper, according to a new study being published in The Lancet this week.

Skip to next paragraph Related Health Guide: AIDS

The finding is important because five million more Africans will need AIDS drugs in the next few years, and most live in rural or exurban areas where clinics are far away and doctors and nurses are scarce finance trainings.

The study was done in rural Uganda, largely among subsistence farmers, by researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Boston University and several Ugandan institutions.

They randomly divided about 1,400 patients with advanced AIDS into two groups, one getting clinic care and one getting visits from field officers on motorcycles who delivered drugs, checked vital signs and gave counseling.

After a year, 11 percent of each group had died, but similar numbers in each — 84 percent and 83 percent — had their viral levels under control. Home-based care was slightly cheaper for the government and much cheaper for the patients because they did not have to find bus fare, an obstacle that causes many Africans to drop out of treatment.

In an accompanying editorial, two authors from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria praised the study, saying evaluations of cost-effectiveness were “more important than ever” since the need for AIDS treatment far outstrips the money to pay for it. The only caveat they raised was that having AIDS carried less stigma in Uganda than it did elsewhere and that the home visits by AIDS workers might not be accepted across Africa.

For once, my answer’s remarkably clear. Since May, I’ve been toying with the idea of bringing more group work and facilitation into my coaching. In August, I hosted a Party of Possibility to try to figure out what this would look like. And this month, I started the pilot run of the One Change course.

I love the One Change course. I’m watching and facilitating as our cozy group of five takes on changes close to our hearts – everything from business plans and client recruitment to starting art projects, exploring health and fitness, and being present.

My next step: to take the foundation laid down in the pilot course and fly with it!

The One Change course will have its official launch on January 14, just in time for any New Year’s changes you might be thinking through.

And you are all invited to the party.

On the periphery of the Las Vegas Strip resides the 3,592-acre Mediterranean – style Lake Las Vegas Resort, a confidentially-owned artificial lake in southeast Nevada. A resort and inhabited region in single, this retreat has a laid-back vibe when compared to Vegas speedy-paced nightlife, but it still gives guests an eclectic atmosphere to explore. The resort includes everything from custom homes to exotic boating excursions to finals golf courses.

For guests who have always wanted to journey overseas Lake Las Vegas sets itself apart as a leading gateway reminiscent of Europes lakeside villages. Guests staying at the AAA Four Diamond-rated Ritz-Carlton can see traces of arched doorways and clay tile roofs. Offering an unforgettable view of the resorts mountainous backdrop is the Loews lodge, which is also AAA Four Diamond-rated.

There are abundance of on-water and waterfront activities. Lake Mead, one of the largest national entertaining sites in the United States, is only two miles away and offers scenic power-boating and watersports opportunities. Within the resort, the 320-acre lake only allows non-motorized recreational watercraft with the exception of the resorts two cruise yachts and safety vehicles but visitors can select from paddle boating, kayaking, canoeing, sailboating or fishing at Lake Las Vegas two marinas, MonteLago Village Marina and SouthShore Marina.

For fly-fishermen, the lake overflows with trout, bluegill, bonefish, bass and sunfish, and master guides even offer programs and education for both new and veteran fishers.

Golfers will find Lake Las Vegas to be the ultimate golfing gold mine with three 18-hole courses collectively named the Best Resort Golf Courses by Golfweek magazine in 2007: the Reflection Bay and SouthShore Golf Clubs both designed by Jack Nicklausand The Falls Golf Clubdesigned by Tom Weiskopf.

MonteLago Village is considered as a resort-within-a-resort, the 55,000-square-foot commercial village captures the essence and beauty of old-world Europe as cobblestone streets converge into continental plazas. It is an close, pedestrian-only community lined with boutiques, residential quarters, and lakeshore bistros and restaurants.

As families gather around the country this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, many of them are bracing for the intense emotions of the holiday meal. The combination of food and family often brings out longstanding tensions, criticism and battles for control. Simple issues like cooking with butter or asking for seconds are fraught with family conflict and commentary.

“If we had an audiotape of a lot of families talking together, you would hear so much chatter about what other people are eating, who gained weight, who lost weight, who’s eating like a bird, who’s having seconds,” notes Cynthia M. Bulik, director of the eating disorders program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Bulik told the story of a patient whose mother scolded her for not eating her homemade cookies. “You don’t like my cookies?” she asked. As a result, the daughter relented and took a cookie. But when she then reached for a second, her mother scolded her again. “Do you really think you need another one?” she asked her.

In another family, a mother-in-law agreed to show up for Thanksgiving only if she could be assured none of the foods would be prepared with butter. “I’m not doing butter right now,” she said. “If you do butter, I’m not coming.”

Many people have an unhealthy preoccupation with body image or have undiagnosed eating problems that they may then try to impose on others, said Dr. Kathryn Zerbe, professor of psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University and a longtime expert on eating disorders.

When I first decided to do an MBA, I had high expectations of what life would be like after graduation. I imagined a nice fat paycheck, being able to afford to drive to work, meetings at the Taj and a spacious office with a kick-ass view.

Reality?

Let’s just say that the only thing that does have a nice view is my building terrace, where I escape to, from time to time to avoid that recurring question “have you got a job yet, beta?”.

When they sell you the MBA dream – no one cares to mention that you’ll be one of millions of others with the same ‘degree stamp’ all competing for half the number of jobs.

They especially forget to mention that when you graduate during a recession, you’re effectively competing for one position with hundreds of others who actually have work experience and are unemployed.

The result?

Endless interviews that go nowhere.

Or worse, interviews where they ask you what kind of salary you’re expecting – and then smirk at your response. Currently, I’m quoting for less than what BEST drivers get (they earn about 15k+ a month)

What was the point in spending lacs of rupees and two years of my life on a degree that leaves me unemployed!!!

So, the other day, I was sitting through what must be my hundredth interview in the past five months, since graduation and was actually one of five shortlisted candidates. Forever the optimist, I thought to myself – finally, I may just be getting a job. And instead of a final round of interviewing, they pose this discussion topic to all five of us and ask us to debate it out. It was some insane question on project management and I was totally stumped.

And I mean really totally lost. I didn’t even understand the question.

Luckily most of the group members were in the same boat (so that made me feel slightly better) – except for this one guy who talked at length – adequately making up for the rest of us!!!

But naturally, they gave him the job.

The Surrendered Muslimah: Marriage & Etiquettes Workshop Delivered by Sister Sara Malik, Surrend

The Surrendered Muslimah: Marriage & Etiquettes Workshop

Delivered by Sister Sara Malik, Surrendered Wife Trainer (UK)*

Date: Saturday 5th December 2009
Time: 10am – 5pm
Venue: Froud Centre, Romford Road, Manor Park, London, E12 5JF

The Prophet (saw) said:

Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The ruler who has authority over people is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them; A woman is a guardian of her husband’s house and children and is responsible for them; A slave is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it; So all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges. (Bukhari 730)

During the one-day workshop, women learn all about the concept of ‘surrender’ and unravel the myths around it. Throughout the course of the day, women learn new ways that directly contribute to happiness and intimacy in a marriage; from learning way they could receive better, to looking after themselves more effectively. They explore ways they can express themselves more effectively and how to successfully get their needs met.

The workshop sheds light on how men feel around the topics of control and respect, aswell as helping them realise the significance of showing gratitude in a marriage. Although this workshop does not replace the in-depth investigation that the on-line Seminar provides, it is a perfect introduction into the principles of surrendering, and the ways to go about it.

*Sara Malik is a certified women’s relationship trainer, who leads women through on-line seminars, one-day workshops, one-on-one telephone support and a web-based support group. She helps and guides women transform their marriages with the principles of the bestselling book The Surrendered Wife, by Laura Doyle. Sara successfully applies the principles of surrendering in her flourishing and intimate marriage of 12 years, and resides in West London with her husband, three boys, and her parents in-law. Her aim is to teach women that they can have it all: inner peace, self-accomplishment, a thriving marriage, happy children, and a successful extended family.
And Allah alone gives success. For more information please visit the website at www.surrenderedwife.com

All women welcome and entrance by bookings only.
