Los Golden Globes tienen algo divertido y es que son capaces de calificar tanto cine como televisión en un sólo evento. Lo malo es que las categorías no son muy elocuentes, por así decirlo, y terminan estando musicales y comedias en un sólo lado de la balanza.

Muchas pelis no las he visto, la mayoría son pelis que no van a traer y dependiendo de los corrillos en las salas de cine, habrá que ver si se hace el esfuerzo de buscarlas por Amazon, pedirlas prestadas o inducir a los vecinos o a algún amigo descarriado a que la compre pirata (ooops).

Siguiendo con el juego, espero se hayan tomado un tiempo prudencial para meditar el listado de ayer. Hoy voy a subrayar en negrilla las pelis que considero ganadoras y en itálica las que no he visto.

Qué linda competencia. Damon dirigido por Soderbergh debe ser muy bueno, Day-Lewis nunca defrauda aunque insisto ni los musicales ni Marshall son mi fuerte, Downey Jr. es de los que pintan mejor pero quién sabe si se arriesguen a darle premios debido a su consabida arrogancia y humor negro en los podios, Gordon-Levitt me cae muy bien desde Third Rock from The Sun pero quién sabe si logre premio, lo último que le vi fue The Juror y fue normalito, el otro nominado ni idea.

Sinal de alerta ligado! Após atingir a menor audiência de sua história na semana passada, a ABC decidiu acionar o sinal de alerta para ‘FlashForward’.

O drama vem caindo ininterruptamente desde sua premiere, já trocou de showrunner, e uma reação positiva do público em termos de audiência ainda não foi detectada.

Além de ser uma série 100% serializada, ou seja, com histórias contínuas que dificultam o acompanhamento caso você perca um episódio, os roteiros do sci-fi começam a cansar os fãs pelas inúmeras situações introduzidas sem nenhuma resposta.

Mas segundo a emissora, não há nada de alerta e a pausa na produção já era combinada faz tempo (cof cof) – com o intuito de dar mais tempo aos roteiristas de desenvolverem melhor os roteiros.

‘FlashForward’ é a segunda série novata da ABC a ter sua produção suspensa antes do fim do ano – época em que todas as produções são suspensas. A comédia ‘Cougar Town’ também teve sua produção paralizada em virtude de problemas pessoais com Courteney Cox.

Courteney Cox will be returning to the set of new TV series Cougar Town after it was put to a brief halt.

The actress, who serves as executive producer on the comedy, had halted the production over an undisclosed matter.

A spokesperson for the former Friends star, who plays single mum Jules in the series, at the time said Courteney needed to deal with ‘a private family matter’, reports People magazine.

And now, her rep has confirmed the 45-year-old will head back to work on the ABC show.

Her co-star Busy Phillips also said on his Twitter page that Cougar Town was “only down one day” and that “we”re back shooting after Thanksgiving. I”ll pass along the love to CC.”

2004 was a hard call to make, especially as someone who spent the majority of her life dreaming of living in Boston, living in Boston, and now, planning to go back to Boston. The Red Sox winning the World Series and breaking the curse in 2004 is high on the list of things that I am thrilled to have been able to witness.

2004 also saw some pretty good films with Super Size Me and Napoleon Dynamite. The latter resulted in every high school student I know incessantly quoting the film for months. (“But my lips hurt real bad!”, and “Whatever I feel like I wanna do, God!”, seem to be the most memorable). Garden State, if I remember correctly, also ruled my life. (And its soundtrack ruled the CD player of my borrowed car that fall). These were all thoroughly enjoyable and everything, but my final decision was the television show Friends.

Friends began in 1994 and followed the stories of 6 twenty-something best friends; Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox Arquette), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc).

I’m sure that everybody knows the basic story line of Friends, so I won’t get into it. Basically, it was a stand-out during the mid-1990’s height of sitcoms. It was funny, it was simple, it portrayed a life that I could only dream of, and the characters were wildly attractive. I never had “The Rachel” haircut, but I have taken photos of Ms. Aniston to the hairdresser with me before, and I’ve always dreamed of having a purple kitchen like Monica’s.

Friends makes the cut because not only did I love the show, I loved it for years on end. I loved the characters and I loved following their lives and relationships. I’m not sure if I was ever truly invested in it as a show that I had to watch every single Thursday night when a new episode aired, but I know I did often make a point to watch it — and part of me finding and enjoying the show probably had everything to do with the fact that it aired on Thursday nights: The only night a week  that I could count on having off from gymnastics.

Not that the day of the original airing really mattered: the show reran in syndication an unreal amount through the early ’00s.

Friends is an easy show to like, and that’s probably why I like it. Sometimes it’s nice to just be entertained by enjoyable characters. While I do like viewing and reading things that require considerable critical thought (though, as a handful of professors will tell you, getting me to enjoy viewing and reading in such a way was not an easy task), but more than that, I enjoy being entertained. I like being able to take a story at face value and laugh at it. I loved the immature antics of Joey and Chandler and their open indulgence in simple things: television, take-out, porn, and ceramic dogs. I loved the materialistic side of Rachel: I could never be that vain if I tried, but I like the idea that maybe it doesn’t make you a bad person if you are. And, if I’m being honest, I loved the romantic story lines with Ross & Rachel and Monica & Chandler. I spent 10 years rooting for Ross and Rachel, and so did you.

I cried when I watched the Friends finale, because I had invested countless hours into these characters, and it was time to move on. (I cry when I finish books, too, because it’s like my new book-friends die when the story is over).

While there might not be anything seemingly ground-breaking about the show, it is the only show that I can think of (with a possible exception of It’s Always Sunny) that has ever had a true ensemble cast. All 6 friends played an equal acting role, and in each others fictional lives. They broke ground when they lobbied to all be paid the same per episode salary (Schwimmer and Aniston took pay cuts in order for this to happen), and ultimately, the show was probably so believable because of things like that. Friends felt genuine because the cast members were, in actuality, friends.

I will admit right now that I proudly own at least two seasons on DVD and at least four “Best of Friends” DVDS… and a trivia game…

Courteney Cox has put the production of her new TV series Cougar Town on hold.

The former Friends actress stars as single mum Jules and also plays executive producer on the comedy show, reports the Daily Star.

The star was said to have temporarily halted the production over an undisclosed matter.

A spokesperson for TV network ABC said: “We can confirm production on Cougar Town has been temporarily shut down in order for Courteney to deal with a private family matter.”

Their names appear everywhere these days. So how does a writer specializing in TV programming and celebs make a slip-up like this?

2012 – Roland Emmerich’s new film pulled in $225 million globally this weekend, proving that disaster films aren’t necessarily box office disasters.  Unfortunately, the enormous success of 2012, Transformers 2, and G.I. Joe, means that no big-budget movie with a good plot or script will ever again be made.

Cox, Courteney – The Friends co-star will return to the popular Scream series in its fourth installment.  She’ll reprise her role as Gale Weathers, an attractive older woman who tracks down mysterious younger men doing bad things so she can bring them to “justice.”  As such, Scream 4 will be named Cougar Town.

Lohan, Lindsay – The actress/singer was partying recently at the Crown Bar in L.A. and allegedly tromped into the kitchen and grabbed a couple expensive bottles of champagne.  When asked to pay her tab, an onlooker says that Lohan freaked out: “She kept saying ‘I don’t pay for drinks! This is ridiculous!”  Lindsay, darling, you look like you’ve already paid for them.

I urge all my flowers to watch Cougar Town. Yes Courtney Cox is drop dead beautiful. The show is well written and there are two stand out characters. Courtney’s ex husband, played by Brian Van Holt. A washed up golf pro living on a boat, in a parking lot. He shows you can still be a slacker at 40, but at least he is aware of his mistakes.

Ian Gomez (you know him as Nia Vardalos’ husband) plays the best henpecked husband we have scene in many years. The fact his wife is so shitty to him prompts his not wanting much. However I cant quite call him a loveable loser.

“Don’t Come Around Here No More”

It’s been a while (since, you know, the show’s pilot) since I’ve visited Cougar Town from a critical perspective, as the show has largely stood to serve as background for my Modern Family review writing. There are worse fates for a series, of course, such as not watching them at all, but with Cougar Town I feel as if there’s a definite need to say something about a show that’s been unfairly maligned in some respects and quite fairly attacked in others.

There were moments in the first six episodes of the show that it became the show that some critics and viewers make it out to be, an overacted farce of an insufferable woman dating a younger man. But what I liked about the show was that it was never just that show, never just a show about that particular phenomenon. Instead, the show was about a woman dealing with a lousy ex-husband who remains in her life, an overly critical best friend, a dependent co-worker, a sarcastic son, an antagonistic neighbour, etc. And what makes me stick with the show is that for all of Courteney Cox’s overacting (which is truly bad at points) is that, by and large, I like those character. I like Bill Lawrence’s writing style, I like the dynamic between the different characters (Bobby remaining friends with Ellie’s husband, for example), and I think there’s an engaging show here.

And to be honest, I thought “Don’t Come Around Here No More” brought it out. With Jules’ boyfriend out of the picture, the show becomes a show about a “cul-de-sac crew” rather than about simply Jules’ character, and even elements of the episode which in theory should have amplified Jules’ worst qualities connected for me. It’s still not a perfect series, but this half-hour was a lot of fun and I’m not going to pretend my Modern Family review wasn’t later because of it.

It makes sense that this episode would move away from Jules’ insanity, considering that last week we got rid of poor, poor Josh. The idea of giving Jules a younger boyfriend wasn’t a terrible one, but their break-up was the sort of protracted affair that just didn’t work in practice. Cox was too prone to diving into Jules’ neuroses with abandon, and the entire thing just didn’t work. Here, however, the show makes Jules’ very aware of one of her neuroses (her inability to remain alone) to the point where she purposefully attempts to curb that behaviour. As a result, the character is more toned down, and the episode is better for it. Even when we get the montage (which the show has put to good use in the past) of her time alone, which I thought would have the character losing her mind, it’s more frustrating than crazy, and the only over-acting is a justified reaction to a crocodile. I was fully expecting it to be a total mess, but it ended up being pretty enjoyable. The episode synopsis claims that the episode is actually about Jules going on a date with an older man, but rather than being the point of the episode it pretty much is just a brief aside before focusing on more interesting things.

The episode is also helped by having quite a few fun elements for the men, who have really been holding down the fort on the show even as Jules has been particularly all over the place. The episode had a chance to go into a really annoying place by turning Jules’ sex dream about Grayson into an ongoing sense of tension, but her neighbourly overshare makes it a quick little note before the episode goes for something a bit more subtle. The show has slowly been wearing down Grayson to become part of the group, and I thought the troubadouring and the Rudy viewing were both examples of why I like both Josh Hopkins and this character. He is willing to criticize Jules where others aren’t, and I like what he adds to the show – plus, let’s face it, “Comfortable in my Sexuality” was kind of catchy.

The episode also succeeded in making Jules’ decision to break the bet into something more than a crazy and wacky journey. She breaks it not through slapstick attempts to avoid doing so but by accepting that people need her, or that people want to talk to her, or that she needs people too. The episode has no greater moral than the importance of having a group of people around you, and in the process the show demonstrated it has the same feeling about its ensemble. I genuinely love this cast on paper, and they’re doing some fine work both with broad comedy (Dan Byrd playing both the pumpkin explosion and the awkward flirting with gusto) and with more emotional stuff (like the always great Brian Van Holt helping bring Ellie and Andy back together). It’s just an enjoyable cast, and when an episode feels designed to work with them the show clicks.

It’s still not perfect, some jokes falling flat here and there and Busy Phillipps’ wonderful performance never quite making me care about Laurie as I may about other characters, but I am charmed by this show’s universe. It will be interesting to see if the show returns to Jules’ younger lovers in earnest, or her love life in general, but this episode demonstrates that Lawrence and Co. see as much as we do that the show is more engaging as an ensemble piece than as “Cox Gone Wild.”

Cultural Observations

• This is the moment where I have to admit that I’ve never watched The Shawshank Redemption or the final 2/3 of Rudy. *Ducks*
• It’s interesting to see that the show has been retaining more of the Modern Family lead-in than one might have anticipated: it doesn’t seem as if the show would be entirely compatible especially considering how divisive Cox’s character has been, but it’s been holding well since it got its full season order.
• While we’re here, in case you didn’t hear, Scrubs (in its new format) will debut its 9th season on December 1st, at which point Bill Lawrence will officially have taken over ABC. It’s not clear if ABC’s stroke of luck with non-Hank comedies this season will extend to his other show, but I hope it does for both it and Better Off Ted (which arrives December 8th for its second season).

Here there is the first promotional poster for the new scream movie…About the cast, Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette are all set to return, but beyond that, they haven’t even chose a director. We reported in October that Dimension was supposedly close to getting Wes Craven back to direct Scream 4-

The plot is nothing new, Mtv reported this: “The fourth one is an ensemble. It’ll take place right now, 10 years later, and it’s going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We’ll have our three main characters, and we’ll be introducing several more. We’ll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That’ll take us through the next three.”

Earlier today, Scream 4 writer Kevin Williamson announced on his twitter page that he’s “writing. late night”. MTV spoke to him and he confirmed he is completing the script for Scream 4, and concurrently writing the 5th installment as well.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette have headed back to the design studio just in time for the holidays. The husband-and-wife design team have been working with Satya Jewelry since 2007 on a collection of butterfly-inspired jewels to benefit the EB Medical Research Foundation, a cause close to the Arquettes’ hearts. “There is a beautiful child named Brendon, the son of one of our dear friends, Andrea Pett Joseph, who was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa or EB [a rare skin disease],” David tells Vogue.com. “We were not aware of the condition until it affected us personally but, of course, once we got to know this incredible child we wanted to do whatever we could to help.” Since the launch of their EB jewelry collection, the Arquettes and Satya Jewelry have raised over $200,000 to benefit EBMRF. For this upcoming holiday season, David and Courteney have added three new pieces to their collection, including a new butterfly pendant, a new “hope” pendant and an onyx, blue topaz and turquoise bracelet with a sterling silver charm. Happy Halloween (tomorrow)! But for our workplace purposes, you get the drift. It’s Friday and the weekend’s here and gee, what’ll you do for fun? Will you trick or treat? Will you see one of the (few) movies opening this weekend? If you’re curious, here’s the deal…not tons of  brand new films opening because we’ve still got a few weeks before the  big blockbuster holiday stuff that falls in the TCMZ  (Thanksgiving/Christmas Movie Zone) …as in New Moon, 2012, A Christmas Carol, Avatar, etc… But for now, your main choices are as follows. There is 1) This Is It, the Michael Jackson documentary. 2) Gentlemen Broncos, the latest from Jared Hess who made Napoleon Dynamite. I saw it and while I realize I am easily 20-30 years older than the target audience, I did find Jemaine Clement (Flight of  the Conchords) really funny in it. Perhaps you’ll see Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day which is the sequel to the cult hit B.S.(1) — still starring Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus. Then we have another scary movie: House of the Devil which is getting lots of critical acclaim. Or perhaps you’ll just go see Paranormal Activity and continue to make that flick one of the most profitable pictures ever! If you do see something, let us know what you think.

In the meantime, all this TV stuff got me wondering — which naturally, does lead to a poll. Because I was watching a Friends rerun. Still funny. A show I was quite keen on. And I know now that the girls have all done really well of late. Courteney Cox has a hit show,  Cougar Town. Jennifer Aniston’s got a slew of movies, she’s one of America’s faves and her lovelife is daily tabloid fodder. Their costar, the lovely Lisa Kudrow is also about to guest star on Cougar Town.

So the Friends gals are really busy these days. Which leads me to wonder…what about the guys? Oh sure, everybody has a few misfires. But my question for you today is which of these guys has the stamina (and the chops) to survive the curse of the hit sitcom?
