Ken Zi:Kill said he was alive, and Zi:Kill said in 1999, they were alive. Anyway, the band which is actually alive is “THE SUINAN DANGERS” (or Si:Koll ?). They are the Zi:Kill cover band. Youtube has many of their live show. The latest show I found is the last November 12, 2009 at Club Saru

Sw Eden cannot read Japanese so I use the Google translate with this website http://ip.tosp.co.jp/i.asp?i=suinandangers. If you can read Japanese, just click at it, it will be better to than my words.

My guess, The Suinan Dangers is an Baseball Team who makes the cover for all bands Tusk (Itaya) have been in. The Suinan Dangers have done the cover for Zi:KiLL and The Slut Banks (Sw am not sure if they do Craze cover???). I like the headband of the vocalist a lot.

Band lineup is
Vocal – Tusz
Guitar – Dr.Caplton
Bass – Dutch-Y
Drums – Mon’koh Star

About their original band, I found in the same website, you can find a lot of photos on Google Search. So Google it!!

Ive always said that blacks have the greatest allies in the Democratic party. We have had their backs throughout history and this debate is just another example of the Republican party being behind the times on an issue that is similar to slavery, womens voting rights, the civil rights movement and global warming.

Why do Republicans get angry when Reid compares opponents of this health care bill to supporters of slavery?
The developing nations which were not allied with either the Free World or the Communist bloc during the Cold War were called the ____ what? its a 9th grade history question. someone said neutral, but that wasnt it..

The developing nations which were not allied with either the Free World or the Communist bloc/block?
Joseph Jensen(main character)- genuine good guy. Late 20s. He is short and muscular but overall average looking. His big heart makes up for his small stature. He loves sports and works 3rd shift at one of the largest banks in the country. He is soon to be laid off and afraid to tell Lorelei as their relationship has been strained lately. He loves Lorelei with all his heart even though she treats him like dirt. His low self-esteem propels him to keep the sexy Lorelei on his arm like a trophy for 7 years.

Lorelei Lancaster – Joes girlfriend. Same age as Joe. She is tall and skinny. She is hot and she knows it. She has long ravenous brown hair and a perfect body. She is snobbish with expensive taste. She loves guys with money. Something Joe has very little of. She has been spoiled her whole life both by her adopted parents and Joe. She has doubts about the relationship as Joe has little time to spend with her and little money to spend on her. She has tried to leave Joe several times but ends up staying with him out of pity. She works in a grocery store and hates her job but likes the new manager and his large salary. She is constantly pointing out to Joe that other men would be better candidates than him

Ally Wilkes – A sweetheart in her mid 20s. 4 years younger than Joe and Lorelei. Non-smoker, light drinker(due to an incident on one particular occassion). She is short with a great body and an even better personality. She is outgoing and loves music. She has brown hair and eyes the color of emeralds. She has a point nose but perfect teeth. She is constantly chewing gum. She has one tattoo on her back and her nose and right eyebrow are pierced. She is kind, caring and loving. She has a job as a cocktail waitress at a strip club. The job is fun and the money is great but she is not greedy. She often gives Joe his money back when he overtips her. This is what attracts Joe to her. While every other guy is lusting over her body, it is her big heart which Joe admires. She works a lot as she is trying to pay off school loans and has a history of bad relationships as she is a terrible judge of character. Done with all the jerks she wants to find one genuine good guy. The younger Ally will give Joe the kick in the pants he needs to get his life back on track.

Do you like my characters? Who is your favorite? Would you be interested in reading a story that included these characters?

Do you like my characters?
So lets see, the liberals whine that Bush lied, misled, made up Intel to go into Iraq, so Bush is stupid according to the liberals. what does that make those highly intellectual liberals on the Intel Committee? Complete morons? It must if they fell for Bushs supposed lies,

Are these lies also?

One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.
–President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraqs weapons of mass destruction program.
–President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.
–Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.
–Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraqs refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.
Letter to President Clinton, signed by:
– Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998

Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.
-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

Hussein has … chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.
– Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

We’ve blogged about cover bands before on TWBITW, so we won’t repeat our general observations about the general suckage of cover bands. We’ll just say that, when your whole career is based on somebody else’s songs, it’s a fine line between having a clever gimmick and being truly weird–and it’s one Tragedy manages to strut along with more attitude than John Travolta wolfing down two stacked slices of Lenny’s thin crust during the opening credits of “Saturday Night Fever”.

In Tragedy’s case, the clever gimmick is pretty simple: they’re a metal band that does Bee Gees songs (or, as they like to say, they’re the tri-state NYC area’s greatest all-metal Bee Gees tribute band…got that?). But as with most truly weird bands, it’s all in the execution, people. Instead of a one-note gimmick, they actually manage to be a pretty solid metal band, with a knack for finding all the right headbanging analoges to the Gibb bros’ disco touches. And they do it without, as far as I can tell, ever resorting to “I Was Made for Lovin You”-style disco/rock cheese. So… “How Deep Is Your Love?” becomes the lighter flicking monster ballad, “You Should Be Dancing” turns into a Spinal Tap/Iron Maiden-style epic…and so on. It’s all sort of brilliantly stupid, in the way most good metal is.

Tragedy’s signature song, of course, is “Stayin’ Alive.” This video features that song and also introduces the band…including my personal favorite, bass player Gibbous Waning. With that name, he could moonlight in a Morbid Angel cover band while he’s at it.

It’s raining and cold. The mountains on either side of my car make me feel like I’m trapped in a Lord of the Rings novel. Ominous and sure that Frodo will fuck something up soon. The guy in my passenger seat has fallen asleep momentarily, while my windshield wipers can’t find a happy medium between being too dry—creating one of the worst sounds I’ve ever heard—and not on a high enough speed—causing a drunken effect from the rain on the windshield. I have two hours left. Shoot me.

I’m en route to Nashville. Music City. Where everyone goes to make it big. Other than New York. Or Los Angeles.

It’s the UGA/Vanderbilt weekend and I’m coming up here to play a show at 3rd and Lindsley. I’m pretty sure I’m saying/spelling that wrong. Their website tells me otherwise. LindsLey. Definitely an L in there.

We get to Nashville at the perfect time. 5 o’clock. Nothing says, “welcome to our town” like a street packed with cars. Welcome, indeed.

It’s Friday night and our hostess is determined to show us as much of Nashville as possible, so we’re going to a “Vanderbilt bar.” It’s more of a college scene and less of the honky-tonk and cowboy phenomenon that seems to have taken over most of downtown Nashville.

It’s a typical venue. The doormen look like they could be straight off of the set of Gangs of New York. I’m 22 and still scared to give them my ID. They let me in. I hold my breath as I walk past them. Goons, they’re a crazy breed.

Inside and downstairs is a bar with four sides. Meaning it’s a square. It goes all the way around. You get it. It’s a big bar. The drinks are served in plastic cups that are too small and spill most of your $6 drink the instant you pick it up. I settle into a corner that happens to have an ATM in it; ironically in trying to stay out of the way, I pick the one spot in the bar that probably has the most traffic going through it. I move after apologizing to the seventh person for being in their way.

Upstairs—I find out there’s an upstairs when I suddenly realize that I know no one around me and start exploring—is a stage and a smaller, cash only, bar. Conveniently, the cash only bar is situated at the polar opposite corner of the bar from the ATM. Typical.

The band playing is a cover band and they seem to have a pretty decent following, judging from the cluster of drunk college kids swaying back and forth in front of the stage. I see two people with their hands waving in the air. OutKast, LL Cool J, Snoop, Dr. Dre, S Club 7, thank you for enlightening our generation unto this universal sign of coolness. They mostly play rock covers. Nirvana, Black Crowes, every now and then the mysterious lead guitarist throws in a couple rap verses. This causes a girl that could possibly be his girlfriend/wife/sister to yell loudly. It’s a family affair, this concert.

It’s even colder outside now. I’m standing next to a space heater and I’m still shaking. The crowd in the bar is definitely a college crowd. Mostly button downs and khakis. My sweater and jeans feel outnumbered in a thrift-store-meets-j-crew kind of way. There’s no hostility here. We are all cold, no matter what our bank statements say.

The cab ride back to the house I’m staying at is $17. The fact that the driver can tell me that and keep a straight face makes me hate him even more. Welcome, indeed.

It’s Saturday morning; we all ride down to Vanderbilt Stadium at Dudley Field. I think it’s their fall break or something, because no one’s here. Traffic is nonexistent. Tents stretch for only a couple blocks in any direction from the stadium. It’s depressing. And cold. My triple layer of clothing is not helping. We run into a friend that graduated in May; his brother went to Vanderbilt. At game time we make our way to our seats, but we know it’s going to be an uninteresting game.

I’m right. The game is boring and slow. I’m in the player’s parent’s section. It’s cool seeing it from this angle, remembering what it was like to play sports in high school and the support system the parents make around you. It makes the comments from the upper crowds a little awkward, however. Small jeers and jests about someone’s son’s performance on the field always find their way down to the parents. I’m waiting for one of them to snap and do a Kimbo Slice impression on a drunken over-red bulled college kid. They never do.

I’m still cold.

We leave at halftime and go back to the house.

When it’s time to head down to 3rd and Lindsley, we pack into a couple cars and head towards downtown. As we make our way, I’m pretty sure we’ve passed it. We’re blocks from downtown, on 3rd street, passing buildings that look less than inviting. We need to turn around. The street is ending. We must have passed it.

Of course, there it is.

On the corner of 3rd Ave and Lindsley Ave, a well-lit establishment with ample parking comes into view. I get out and walk inside. The door guy asks for a cover, and after explaining to him that I’m supposed to be playing in… 11 minutes, he tells me to go check in with the sound guy. The layout is intriguing. Downstairs is a kitchen and bar. Tables sit scattered throughout the room, most of them on the side with the stage. The band I’m opening up for, Webb Wilder, is already set up. Their equipment takes up a good bit of the stage, but it’s only me and a guitar so I’m not too worried about being cramped.

After sound check I grab a beer. The bartender is nice and flirtatious—the way they all should be—and tells me she’s looking forward to my set; she’s done this before.

I’m halfway through my beer when it’s time to start. I walk on stage and begin my normal routine. “Hello, I’m…” “I’m from…” “Thanks for being here…” It’s not exactly Hemingway but it gets the point across.

I have 45 minutes to play. I play entirely originals. All of the songs I have recorded on my demo—which I, of course, forgot to bring any copies of—get belted out over the quality sound system 3rd and Lindsley runs.

The crowd is a group of regulars. People that know that bartender’s and waitress’ names. They’re nice and welcoming to the new sound—I’ve never played in here before, or Nashville for that matter. They clap after each song. I even get a beer bought for me when they notice mine is running low.

I love this place.

I get done with my set after about 7 songs. I get down off the stage and walk over to the bar. A middle-aged couple immediately commends me as I sit down beside them to order another drink. The bartender does the same. I guess it went all right.

I start to look around for the group of friends I came here with. I hear someone call my name. I look up. There they are.

There’s an upstairs to the room that I didn’t even notice until now. The group of people that came with me is perched up there, taking an aerial approach to my show. Each one gives me the standard, friendly, “good job!”

The waitress that I’m told I should talk to if I need anything tells me that if I want any food, it’s on the house. This place is like heaven, only smokier. I thank her and tell her that if I need anything I’ll let her know

Sadly, my friends are getting restless and want to eat downtown. We finish our drinks and get ready for the night of touristic pleasures ahead. As I leave a woman approaches me and asks if I brought any copies of my CD with me. I feel like an idiot.

We eat at a TexMex place that has good burritos and tacos. My chicken and steak burritos are satisfying and moderately priced. The meat is flavorful and the tortillas don’t fall apart as I eat it. This pleases me. After we all finish our bucket(s) of beer, we start to decide what over-the-top bar we should visit first.

We walk outside and immediately see Coyote Ugly. There’s a $5 cover for guys and a list of things that one should expect when entering the bar. Included: water is not free; you might lose your tie; you might lose your bra; don’t touch the girls on the bar even if she is your girlfriend; if you’re easily offended this is not the place for you. We pass after we see some of the crowd that’s filling up the bar.

We decide on a bar that doesn’t have a cover charge. Big Shotz. Aptly named because their shots literally look like a drink. As we all get our first drinks and sit down at a table, the house band starts playing.

This band, I will say, was impressive. They played for roughly 5 straight hours. Other than a few small breaks, our experience was filled up with Creed, The Fray, Radiohead, Eve 6, and any other song you could ever imagine being on a Now Volume 1-39 album. Their expansive song list was incredible.

The bassist was a little creepy, resembling someone rolling their face off on ecstasy, he was obviously feeling the music. Perhaps a little too much.

As the night got longer and the shot count got higher, people started falling out. Portions of our group would go and try to find other bars, only to return later conveying that they had been kicked out as soon as they walked in, or that the cover charges were ridiculous. It was a fun night of drinking with friends and enjoying whatever song the live jukebox wanted to play next.

Cab ride home: $18 dollars. I want to cry.

Sunday was a frustrating mix of trying to get the hell out of Music City but running into every possible Road Closed sign imaginable. An entire side of the interstate was closed. The detour was closed. My GPS is telling me I’m literally in the middle of a lake.

Finally, we get out onto I-24 E towards the Georgia border. We start back through the mountains that look like a Tolkein novel and make our way back to Athens. Welcome, indeed.

There it is again. That construction-worker orange. It’s everywhere. I’ve never seen a college town so enthralled with its own color. The GPS I’ve just purchased four hours prior to pulling into Knoxville, TN, is taking up most of my attention. But I can’t avoid it. Even in the corner of my eye it feels like someone is shining a Maglite Flashlight straight into my pupil. I’m trying to find Tin Roof. Its somewhere on Cumberland Ave. This means nothing to me. All I see is orange. Oh, found it.

It’s a big restaurant/bar. The parking lot next to it holds about 20 cars and shares half of these with a package store. I know this because as I walk away from my car the (possibly?) homeless man sitting on a folding chair in front of the door informs me that I can’t park where I did unless I’m purchasing alcohol. I tell him I’m just dropping off my stuff then leaving. We agree that I’ll move my car soon after I’m done setting up. I’ve reached a middle ground with the drifter.

I meet the bartender and put down my stuff. Guess what color tile marks the walkways in the restaurant. Guess what color the bartender’s shirt is. Guess what I feel like doing to my eyes.

I’m playing early because there’s already has a full band scheduled for later. I’ve never been to Knoxville so playing early, leaving time to go out and experience the town, is perfect. I’m playing on a semi-outside stage. There’s a roof, and walls, and windows that look like they could close, but they’re all open. The bartender referred to it as the “stage outside.” I’m outside.

It’s a cool set up. Picnic benches sit on the lower level, while high tables are situated closer to the bar. The stage sits in front of two flat-panel TV’s stacked one on top of the other. Basically, I’ll be sitting in between the NLCS and people that want to watch it. I ask if this is going to piss the people sitting at the picnic tables off, as they’re obviously watching the game. “There are other TV’s they can watch,” I’m informed. Great. They’ll love me.

The staff is easy going and friendly to me, the out of towner from a rival college. I find out that the manager is actually from just outside Atlanta. I ask her how she bares all this orange. She just laughs and says she tries not to look at it. Brave girl.

I start my set. It’s been a while since I’ve played at a restaurant. Maybe six weeks. I remind myself that songs with references to sex and drugs might not fly. It’s early. There’s time.

My friends aren’t here. They’re still at the hotel. It’s just me, pissed off Angel’s fans, and a whole lot of orange.

They finally show up. 30 minutes into my set. They blame the rain.

They’re drunk.

Luckily, my drinks have been and will be free all night, so so am I.

At my set break, I get another drink and start eyeing the food. I browse my friend’s selections. One of them got a basket of fries with a coating of liquid white cheese. I can’t say no to cheese. They’re hot and fresh; the cheese giving that satisfying feeling that only cheese can. The Del Sol Quesadilla puts together chicken, sun dried tomatoes, zucchini, and jack cheese. The chicken was cooked well, moist without being too chewy; the tomatoes were sweet and countered the zucchini’s buttery taste well. The Cuban sandwich contained the normal ham and pork with mustard and swiss cheese. The meat was flavorful, with the soft melted cheese contrasting against the crunch of the toasted bread.

Set number two. The atmosphere is getting looser inside the (now turned into) bar. The drink count is getting higher and so is the volume. The more-than-adequate sound system that Tin Roof provided is doing just fine. My set list starts getting louder. The songs aren’t as Peter, Paul, and Mary any more. Joe Cocker starts coming out. Stevie Wonder. Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s more up-tempo and has more energy. I get done right after 9 and pack up my guitar, fan, mic stand. I take them out to the car that I’ve since moved (drifter thanked me) to another, approved, parking lot.

The bar is getting crowded. The full band is starting to get going and they seem fun but nothing worth calling Nashville over. Lots of hair gel.

I meet a guy from Tennessee. He’s holding a pitcher of beer in one hand, a saltshaker in the other. He approaches me with a line I’ve never heard before. “Damn, you’re tall.” I smile casually. He dives headfirst into his beer then into a story about a guy he knew who was taller than me that died two weeks ago. This conversation got real real, real quick. He proceeds to tell me about how he lives for the moment, driving as fast as he can at all times, no matter what he’s driving—car, motorcycle, bicycle. He starts showing me his scars, scabs, etc.

Where is my drink? Is it still raining?

I zone back in. Knievel is mid-story about how he ran 90 mph into the back of a sedan. The fresh scabs on his forearms and feet hint that at least part of the story might be true.

My drink is MIA. It needs to be located.

The beer/salt trick is being explained. “Shit’ll fuck you up.” Apparently somewhere between being mauled by pavement and crushed by motor vehicles, my scabby friend was told that adding salt to your beer puts it into your blood faster. Dehydration at its finest and he swears by it. “It’s not good unless it tastes bad.”

I leave to get a new drink.

I walk back outside. Guess who’s still there.

“Whatcha drankin?”

I tell him.

“Aw, shit. What’s that other stuff in there?”

I want to leave.

“My cousins, they live out in the boon-docks, I mean they live in east bumblefuck Tennessee,” I chuckle at this reference. “Out where they cook the meth, they don’t drink nothin’ but straight moonshine.”

This conversation is over.

My friends and I finish our drinks and go to a fraternity party at the bar across the street. I don’t know anyone in either fraternity that’s hosting it. I’m that guy that knows a guy that knows a guy in the frat. That’s me. We get there and hear the music shaking the walls. We walk upstairs where the party’s being hosted.

We’re the only ones there.

It’s early. Close to 11. We order drinks. They taste terrible. I order another. I find out why.

Their house bourbon is Southern Comfort. Red Bull and vodka will be the catalyst of my demise tonight.

The place gets crowded quickly. We know no one. We do what any sensible college student does when they get into an awkward situation. We take shots.

The band is a rap cover band. Both front men have matching t-shirts with wings imprinted on the back. Clever.

The band itself is your standard cover band. All the members are talented enough to sound like the song their playing, but none of them blow me away. I make a point to listen to a couple of their songs very closely. “Hot in Here” gets the girls (and a few very, very confident young men) dancing. “You Can Have Whatever You Like” has me singing along; a side effect of the shots is that I feel like I can do T.I. justice. No pun intended.

The band does a good job of keeping the audience involved. Girls on stage—check. Angry mob in front of the stage dancing away their Tennessean woes—check. I’m actually enjoying myself.

The lights are low enough that I can’t see all the orange that will, inevitably, be covering the walls.

I sit down next to one of my friends near the side of the bar. We’re in mid conversation when I see his jaw drop. I follow his eyes and feel my jaw follow suit. Two guys are carrying what I think is a girl. One guy has her ankles; the other guy has her wrists. She’s passed out, making a human “U” between the bar employees. Somewhere, this poor girl’s dad just woke up with his testicles burning. I’ve seen people in strange positions after passing out, but this was a first. We both decide that we never want to have daughters. Ever.

Before I start this next part, let me preface it by saying there were some very blatant clues that should have warned me that I was getting myself in trouble. Either way, it was close to 2:30 in the morning. Sorry, Mom: Out of the corner of my eye I see another strange spectacle. A girl is walking around in, basically, a body suit made of what looks like Under Armour. She passes us. What house are you trying to protect? She turns towards us. “Are you 21?” Clue #1. Yes. Where’d you get all that Under Armour? “It’s Hollister.” Clue #2. “So you’re 21? Will you buy me a drink?” Clue #3. Sure. We’re standing at the bar. “My brother goes to UT, I come and visit him sometimes.” Obviously, this girl is deep. The drink she has in her hand is being gulped in between each breath she takes. Clue #4. “So where are you from?” I tell her. “Oh! I’m going to school there next year!” Clue #5. So you’re transferring there. You have to be transferring there. How old are you? “17.”

I walk away.

The lights come on around 3. I don’t notice any orange. I don’t care anymore.

We make our way to the exits with the rest of the crowd. I make some offhand comment to the guitarist in the band about how I was impressed with his choice of musical scales. It seemed like a great idea in my head. Inquisitive. Intelligent. It was not. Body glove girl is running around outside with a drink in each hand. Wooderson would be proud. Gotta love those high school girls, man.

Our walk back to the hotel is a cold mile and a half trek through campus and downtown Knoxville. There it is, right next to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Insert joke here.

I really, really love covers, and I’ve been sitting on that fantastic one up there, which I hope you’re listening to right now because it’s really cool and different, and I’d been wanting to stream it on here, so I decided to start featuring some of my favorite covers as Music Moments in themselves. This type will henceforth be known as The Song Remains the Same. The clever name is not my own, I took it from the title of a song, album, and movie by Led Zeppelin.

I’ve featured a few covers already, which I’m now going to go back and retcon by tagging them “The Song Remains the Same.” The term “retcon” is an abbreviation of “retroactive continuity.” It’s commonly used in comics when new conclusions or pieces of information are retroactively applied to established canonical events. An example would be the aftermath of DC’s Crises on Infinite Earths, when established characters such as Alexander Luthor, Jr., were “retconned” out of existence by the events. A retcon does not always undo previously established characters or events; retcons can also fill in missing details in a story’s background. The Wolverine line of the New X-Men comics are a good example — Logan was Weapon X, but Weapon I turned out to have been Captain America. I thought that kicked some fucking ass, myself.

By reading this far, you may have now accidentally learned two things. The Zeppelin thing and the comics bit. No need to thank me. I don’t just care about boobs and Batman. I am also a sensitive soul with a passion for education. God bless me.

Please enjoy this radical uke cover of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows!” Nunes has a really cool, clear voice, and I am pretty sure she accompanies and harmonizes with herself using simple recording tricks, which is fun. If you are young but a fan of Love Actually, you may know the song from that. If you’re not a child, you may know the song from all over the place your whole life.

Sorry, I just find it wild when people don’t know songs I consider super-famous. At Paolo and Miss D’s wedding, I asked the very young and competent deejay to play “Tainted Love” and first he had me SPELL IT, then he was like, “Don’t have it, I can look for it, though, who sings that?” “Soft Cell,” I replied, totally still reeling in shock that a young person whose entire profession is playing music had never heard of “Tainted Love,” and he was like, “Is that a new group?” It was insane. I didn’t feel old, I just felt shocked, like he might be a space creature who was hiding inside the real deejay’s skin and trying to pass as an American. (Happens all the time.)

Look for more Julia someday when I have lots and lots of time, because in case you don’t read the alt text by hovering your mouse over the pictures, I am going to surprise-marry her. I have super-stiff competition, though.

On Good Morning America (June 30, 2008) Molly Ringwald said that she took up the ukulele after seeing Julia Nunes on YouTube. “I’ve always wanted to play the ukulele, and she completely inspired me,” she said (the wiki).

Holy crap, I love Molly Ringwald. I can’t fight her. She was Frannie in The Stand! Man, this sucks! Julia, you creative minxy little twinkie, you are ripping my imaginary relationships apart. I’m off to strategize, I guess!

Bogans love commercial radio. But, with the limiting nature of only liking five different artists (s

Bogans love commercial radio. But, with the limiting nature of only liking five different artists (selected from; Pink, Snow Patrol, U2, AC/DC, Nickelback, Coldplay, Green Day or any remix of anything. The Beatles are also allowed, to convey an understanding of musical history, while some outliers like Franz Ferdinand provide extra rock cred), the bogan can quickly grow bored. Commercial radio does what it can, by playing these artists on constant rotation, but still there is a void. Particularly when it comes to live music. Pink’s constant defilement of major arenas notwithstanding, major international acts rarely venture to the antipodes.

Enter the cover band. You know them. They were the guys who formed a band in year nine, playing gigs at lunch to 30 kids who then got booted out of the auditorium for crowd surfing. That was, until the point they formed a cover band, the highpoint of their lives. It’s Darren, Sam and Clint, plus Clint’s younger brother who they recruited to play bass because their old bass player’s wife won’t let him out on weeknights/their old bass player got hooked on ice and disappeared in Darwin/they never see their bass player anymore. And, in a desperate attempt to reclaim the euphoria that is live performance, they go to the same pub, on the same night, every week, and play the same songs. To the same bogans.

And bogans love it. Having only five artists to listen to means that opportunities for attending live rock performances (is there another kind?) are few and far between. Sport notwithstanding, communal entertainment is usually designated as being for ‘other people’. Opera (“poofs”), dance (“poofs), non-rock music (“poofs”), comedy (“is it Hughesy? No? Poofs”) and the theatre (“poofs”) are all for a cultural subset that is not bogan, leaving only whichever Fast and the Furious film is in cinemas, or the pub with a cover band. Those five artists mentioned above can be re-created without the talent, verve or originality of their original members but, importantly, the cover band will mimic each song down to the 16th beat.

Thus, the bogans can bounce around, singing only to the chorus of ‘Betterman’ and ‘Jessie’s Girl’, while screaming for post-Californication Chili Peppers, and feel inordinately cultured. Meanwhile the boys from ‘Jet Black’ or ‘Crazygarden’ reel out “hit after hit”, and the bogans continue to regret that they jumped in to the loud bit from ‘Blister in the Sun’ one measure too soon.

The world is filled with cover bands. It seems like everywhere you go – every festival, every bar – there’s a band playing shows full of other artist’s music. Not that its a bad thing – its awesome to hear people play the classics, and even better when they add their own flavor to it…which brings me to the Easy Star All Stars. These guys specialize in recreating classic rock albums in complete reggae style. These guys bring a fresh flavor and sound to some of the most timeless tracks in modern music. As you read on, take a listen to this…

There’s something about reggae that puts a smile on your face, right? Easy Star All Stars, from the sound of it, isn’t your typical cover band. They put a lot of time and effort into creating respectful arrangements of some really beloved songs. Obviously, attempting to recreate something as timeless as Sgt. Pepper, let alone doing it in a totally different style, is super risky. But these guys do it with accuracy, consistency, and class.

One night – before I’d heard of the Easy Star All Stars – a friend and I were chilling and talking about our favorite music. He posed the question, “If you could take three albums with you to the grave, what would they be?” Firstly, I’d like to say that may be the most difficult question in history! But after a few minutes of deliberation, I picked (for the time being) Radiohead’s OK Computer, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon, and The Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. GREAT albums. But here is where it gets weird: a week or so later I was introduced to Easy Star…and you’ll never guess what their only three cover album releases are….

Radiodread

What are the odds?? It felt too good (and too strange) to be true! These three releases are track-for-track reggae replicas of the original albums. All three are extremely well done, and really bring a fresh and interesting perspective to each classic. Lots of cool effects are incorporated, and reggae-style instrumentation is used to shape shift the overall sound. If you have the chance, definitely pick these albums up. Or if you don’t have the cash, be sure to check out some of your favorite tracks on youtube. Its hard to pick favorites (somewhat ironic), but in my opinion some of the best recreation tracks from each album are…

Even if we have partnerships with famous artists around the globe, we do not think this is always necessary for your event.

We rather promote quality artists who actually add value to your event at reasonable prices. Depending on the event or goals of the event our artists are more flexible to make happen what you want. In ideal cases we combine these quality artists with famous artists.

You should just make sure you know what the target of your event is. Sometimes a lot of money is wasted on an artists which actually has no additional value for you event, while the money could have been used for other items which would have added value to your event.

Even though we promote quality we of course offer famous artists as well, specially those with quality.

Give quality a chance.

Life is good, routine.

The kids are grown and on their own. The wife has plenty to keep her busy between her work and seeing to the needs of her parents. You work each week at a decent job that helps pay the bills and gives both of you decent benefits. You help out with the in-laws whenever you’re needed. Occasionally, the two of you watch a movie together, sharing some air-popped corn and Snow Caps. Weekends are spent on house needs, avocations, farmer’s markets, garage sales or the inexpensive brunch together at a local diner. Life still throws some curve balls, but for the most part, nothing you can’t handle. Even the dog and cat are “BFFs.”

But you used to play rock and roll for a living.

And you want to play rock and roll again.

Not full time, just enough to keep you “in the game.” You’ve got the “gear” and the “chops.” Chances are, you’ve forgotten more about music than most young players out there bangin’ and shreddin’ understand. “They’ve got a lot to learn,” you tell yourself. “I’ve been there. I know.” Whether you really “know” or not, the desire to jump in intensifies.

Of course, spousal support is paramount.

Chances are rehearsals will be at your place. This means the china and crystal will shift in the hutch and all through the house, pictures will have to be straightened out at least once a week. The house’s largest room – at the bottom of the basement steps – will become the “man cave” for the band and unavailable to wife and beast.

With the “go-ahead” behind you, it’s time to find others willing to jeopardize their comfortable routines to get back on music’s path. And there are others – many, many others – all with different experiences around a common need: to feed their musical soul. But the congruency of this need does not translate into musical compatibility and now, your desire to play music is forcefully challenged. People from all walks of life are parading through yours, as you attempt to assemble a cohesive group. It’s similar to having several people in a room wanting to resolve a common issue, with each speaking a different language.

For some, it’s getting together with others to play all the tunes they used to do – a “memories” jam – a social event. Or, it’s taking those same tunes and learning them just well enough to get a gig once in a while. With the addition of a little alcohol to either scenario, their musical souls are fed.

But you’re the player who wants to gather with like-minded musicians, for the purpose of learning tunes with vocal and instrumental precision and accuracy, creating the quintessential “cover band.” You’ve lived through the first two scenarios, but your soul remains hungry. This time, you want to perform music you’ve never attempted before – to get out of your musical cocoon – to “do it right” – one more time. Most people won’t know if the vocal harmonies are spot-on or the guitar player learned his parts perfectly. But if even one person notices, it’s worth it. The band will feel accepted – their collective soul fed. This effort will not automatically yield ultra-high paying engagements, but this has never been about money.

In your scenario, the struggle to reach the “go live” point is not defined by a timeline. You work until you’re ready – whenever that happens. During this process, sadly, members come and go, sending “go-live” a little further down the road. Your resolve is continually tested, as is your patience. You’re tempted to fall back to an easier scenario: play songs you already know, getting through them with minimal effort, and not be too concerned with quality.

But you fight the urge to shift directions, staying the path – a path that could easily take a year or more to navigate. Eventually, the light at the end of the tunnel will no longer be the train coming at you, but rather, the elusive “go-live” point you’ve now captured. Membership is stable and planning for the first engagement is underway. Not knowing how the public will respond, a small amount of anxiety enters your thinking.

Hopefully, everything hasn’t changed too much out there. Hopefully, well-performed music is still appreciated. Hopefully, there are smiling faces. Hopefully, there’s dancing. Hopefully, there’s applause.

Hopefully, this Weekend Warrior can write the next chapter soon.

Sincerely,

Let’s face it, most cover bands suck. Why would I pay money to see a bunch of no-name dudes pretending to be The Doors or Creedence Clearwater Revival? Oh, wait, Eddie tells me that those are actually the current incarnations of The Doors and CCR. But you get the idea…cover bands are basically just something like Creedence Clearwater Revisted, but with a thick extra layer of suck owing to the fact that no one in the band ever even met John Fogerty, let alone got a cease & desist letter from his lawyers. It’s just kareoke with instruments.

Still, a fair number of cover bands out there manage to liven things up by being, say, a bunch of hot chicks playing cock rock, or sticking a fat Elvis impersonator out front for no apparent reason. Then there’s Beatallica, who manage the neat trick of being two cover bands for the price of one. Yes, Beatallica is a Metallica/Beatles mashup cover band. I shit you not.

Beatallica would be awesome enough just on the basis of song and album titles like “Got to Get You Trapped Under Ice” and Sgt. Hetfield’s Motorbreath Pub Band. But the kicker is that they’re actually kind of good. Check on the clip below for “All You Need Is Blood” and tell me it doesn’t make you want to bang your head…or at least laugh your ass off.

I’m going out on a limb here not having travelled to most countries of the world, however I rekon that the cover bands that play in Thai pubs would have to be of one of the best overall quality of their counter parts in the world.

Head into most Thai pubs on a Friday or Saturday night and chances are there’ll be a very competent band up on stage banging out the lastest Thai pop and rock hits in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Several things have struck me when in pubs over the past few years over these cover bands.

The overall quality of the coverbands are surprisingly high. Granted, they’re not playing their own songs, however when they launch into one of the many guitar solo’s that seem to frequent Thai rock music, more often than not they pull them off flawlessly. The average pub rock band in Australia would deliver the solo from “My Sharona”, and call it a good night.

There are a hellova lot of Thai pubs in Bangkok, and on a typical weekend night there’s two cover bands playing at a pub (often playing some of the same songs in both of sets!). With two cover bands playing in a hellova lotta pubs, that adds up to be… erm, whatever the double of “hellova lotta” is. But coupled with the first point, I’m sure it would lead to an impressive number of quality pub rock bands out there.

The bands, and the crowd, are nearly always enthusiastic and energetic – which makes for a good show (well, as good as you can hope for with a cover band performance). To be honest, there’s not alot of variety in the songs played – you’ll hear the same ones week after week. Nerveless, in a good venue the crowd will sing along with a 10 year old song as if it’s their favorite latest hit. With crowds such as this, it’s not a wonder that there’s so many bands out there wiling to play the same songs every week.

I’ve been out with a mate eating dinner in a pub that was otherwise empty, but still had an acoustic cover band playing for us. In a similarly small pub one night we ordered our food, and was delivered as per normal by one of the bar-staff. It was later we saw that the guy taking the orders wasn’t just a waiter, but also the lead singer/guitarist of the cover band that night.

Last night I was out at Yes Indeed, and I saw something in a cover band that I’d never seen before – and which is what got me thinking about this topic. The band was playing the usual assortment of Thai rock and pop, however what stood out that they had two lead vocalists – both of them guys (I can understand the possible need of a male and female lead vocalist).

I was trying to think why they’d need two male lead vocalists. Surely the lead guitarist could jump in with the melodies when required? And I can’t imagine bands being paid so well that they can afford the luxury of splitting the payment up between another member. The second vocalist did chip in with the all important tambourine for a few songs, but his vocals weren’t all that much different from the other guy. Though he did look similar to the lead singer from Slur (who’s also in some lakorn). I couldn’t come up with any answers that made alot of sense, so just settled that they were all just mates who enjoyed playing in a band together. Which actually did make sense.

All in all, even though they aren’t playing their own material, for what they do I’ve got a general respect for Bangkok’s cover bands.

No. I was pretty excited to write a decent entry this morning, but I figured I would wait until late

No.

I was pretty excited to write a decent entry this morning, but I figured I would wait until later so I would have more to cover. Since then I’ve lost all motivation to write anything. I’ll still try my best, alright, well at least %35.

I’m going to try to keep this part short, or I will rant forever. There is a mouse in my apartment! I don’t have any traps or anything, so I have no idea how to get rid of this thing. I might end up just sitting there with a hammer or something and waiting for it to come out. Keith claims it has been here for weeks, but I didn’t see it until today. I swear to god if it touches me while I’m in bed, I will find someone and kill them. Quote me on that.

My roommate(the one who is never hear) locked his door when he left, and yesterday it magically opened. I know he wasn’t here, but somehow it isn’t locked anymore. I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy to know that, but I am ecstatic. He has a guitar, amp, pedal, and tuner in there, which I will be borrowing. To say that I will be borrowing it is sort of a lie, I HAVE been borrowing it already. I tuned his guitar to C (he looks like he would listen to music that’s played in C anyways) and learned Right Side of the Bed by Atreyu. I haven’t been a fan of Atreyu since Lead Sails Paper Anchor came out, but I still love their old stuff.

I’m not sure why, but I get ready to leave my apartment, got my shoes on, grabbed my keys, iPod, and phone, and then realized that I didn’t have anywhere to go. Maybe I am just forgetting something, but I feel like I had somewhere to go. I’ll remember at like 3 tomorrow morning I’m sure.

This picture reminded me to put my plugs back in..woops..

I’ve had this idea for a cover show in Ashland for a while now. Let me explain what that is, local bands cover famous bands’ songs, looks, etc. for one show. This may or may not be happening around Thanksgiving, it depends if I can find enough decent bands. So if you’re interested or know anyone who is,let me know. I’m gonna make sure this show is really cheap too, I don’t want to make people play a lot to see cover songs, because that’s lame.

I need to find $20 by next Saturday so I can go see The Gaslight Anthem and The Loved Ones. So if anyone feels like giving me money for the show, that would be awesome. I thought about giving Plasma to make some money, but I got nauseas just looking at their website. I wonder if I could sell a kidney and be show ready within a week? I’m sure it’s possible.

I lived in Asheville for 7 years. 3 of those years my roommate was a writer for the local independent weekly, The Mountain Xpress. During that time I saw a lot of music that I enjoyed and I am now going to share this with you. By the way, the last time I tried writing anything about music I was openly mocked. So here we go:

Drug Money

Tuesday nights in Asheville for some of this time was dedicated to two things, improv at ARC and Fisher at Vincent’s. The band initially consisted of Fisher Meehan and Paul Conrad, although it grew in time to include other members and others sounds. Fisher it seemed went through some sort of Spinal Tap induced nightmare for all the drummers he went through. Sometimes he’d play with his band, but for the most part it was him and whoever he invited to open. Recommend album: MTN CTY JNK is the only one put out so far, although rumored to be working on something new. Try to get your hands on the Onion Studio Demos. It has a more raw sound due to the fact that it is just Fisher and Paul Conrad.

Mad Tea Party

I think my old roommate said it best when he said that watching Ami Worthen play elicits all the same warm feelings and strange sexual desires and your kindergarten teacher. Best show was at Area 45, which was a small black box community theatre space. The crowd was small but we all sat on the floor just a few feet in front of where they were playing.

Piedmont Charisma

I only saw them twice. They did a show at the Orange Peel with Drug Money, and there was rumored to be record executives there. Sadly the lead singer spent the night staring into the monitor. That being said their self- titled Piedmont Charisma is an excellent album, which i listen too almost religiously.

Dig Shovel Dig

It took me some time to “get” Dig Shovel Dig. I think it happened after I saw them live, at a mini-music festival st Pritchard Park. A lot of their lyrics were simple and a pop mentality, in that parts were instantly memorable or quotable. There sound has changed and I haven’t any of their new stuff. Album recommended: DiMN

Sex Patriaties

Best cover band ever or punk-funk at its finest. To me it seemed that every show they put on was to be the best show ever. They went all out, always. They had an ego though and mostly just played Holiday shows (new year, Halloween, the 4th) To be fair though, the Sex Patriates were a sort of superband and many of the members had other projects, ex member Tyler Ramsey (now of Band of Horses) played the keyboard for a few shows The only put out 1 album as far as I know, Double Live.

Descolada

Sure I may have drunkenly embarrassed myself in front of the band, but that has nothing to do with how awesome they were. They were a loud band. Best heard with the volume turned up to 11. It wasn’t until they played the Orange Peel, with its excellent sound system that I truly appreciated them. Every nuance was heard, It was like I was hearing them on a blown out speaker system before and could finally here them someone took the cotton out my ears. Band members have gone on to other projects including: Judas Horse, IO, and Quetzalcoatl

Honorable Mentions:

Reductio Ad Absurdum

The South French Broads

Lube Royal

The Ether Bunnies

Boba Fettish

The Shuffleboard City Allstars

The Port Huron Statement

((update))

Jason Bugg of the Bugg Blog pointed out that The P.H.S. are not technically from Asheville. Technically. Asheville.

There were a lot of restrictions – NO MORE than 140 words (near impossible), use of specific verbs in the title, must be something that is not a one time deal and it must paint a mental picture (among other details)… with my best effort, I entered this contest.

Of course it’s about Florence! and of course, though I haven’t written about them yet… it’s about my Beatles cover band!

Check it out, click the link below (also if you decide to cruise my other posts and stuff, you can find it on the sidebar links). Please, however, “wishlist” it once you read it. It will help my chances of winning the contest (some money and a two-week contract to work for Trazzler)! I would really appreciate it! Thank you!!!

Well, this is my first post in this new fancy-shmancy blog. I really want to keep this going for a while, and update at least once a week.

I feel that it will be good for me to write out my thoughts. I’m hoping this will lead to a more reflective and concise me. That’s one problem I have – I feel as though I’m either always talking incessantly about nothing with no point to what I am saying, or I’m completely mute with nothing to say.

I also realized that I need to become more worldly, more well-rounded. I need to start reading the newspaper (or at least skim headlines more often).

As for right now, it is 3:11 am as I type this. Today was a nice day.

I work at a Chili’s near a movie theater, and I went into work this morning at 10:30 am to open. My manager, Ivan, was shocked when I walked in the door. Apparently, he thought I called out sick. He was really shocked. It was kinda funny. Another Nicole called out sick for her serving shift later in the day.

After work, I came home and ate some lunch and surfed the interwebs for a while (meaning I Facebook stalked for about five hours). After that I felt really lazy so I treadmilled for a while.

I’ve been feeling ultra fat lately (I haven’t weighed this much since high school… no good), so I’m trying to eat better and work out more often.

After my quick treadmilling, I showered and went with my parents, brothers, and (relatively new) boyfriend Chris to dinner and a show in town. We saw a Beatles cover band called Beatlemania Now. They were okay – it would have been more fun if the audience had been comprised of a younger crowd. I felt like everyone there was 40 +, so there was no dancing, no getting rowdy…. nothing. I need to go to a real show. I haven’t been to one in a long time.

The band itself was okay, they weren’t great musicians, but the guy who played George Harrison was by far my favorite. He had a great voice and wailed on guitar.

Ugh. I have work tomorrow; a double. I want to treadmill or do some physical activity before I go into work… so I’ve gotta be up on the early side. I suppose that means that it’s late and I should be getting to bed!

More tomorrow. Maybe. I have a hot date after work, so I may not have time for a second update! For shame!

I will leave with a link to my newest obsession, a pair of Guiseppe Zanotti pumps that I saw on bluefly.com. Sometimes I can be really girly and high maintenance, and I suppose a little part of that side is shining through. I love shoes.
