Derek Neighbors started the Gangplank collaborative incubator in Phoenix, Arizona because all local start-ups were moving to Silicon Valley. The Gangplank Collaborative offers FREE coworking space. Derek’s blog, Musings of a Mad Man, contains an interesting (and timely to this blog) entry titled Splitting a Problem Into Pieces Then Reassembling It based on the Thinkertoys exercise Cherry Split.

Derek breaks down an idea challenge of “Improving the Local Creative/Technical Community” into the more simple Improve Community, and the results make you think (if you’re into that sort of thing!). Having recently attended Wordcamp and Island Tech here in Victoria BC, the local community seems to be on top of a lot of the attributes listed. In particular there appears to be strong growth, leadership, and organization.

Derek uses the Cherry Split idea generation technique. Step number six is to try reassembling the attributes. First, here a number of the attributes Derek and his helpers came up with:

invest – see financial, sharing, effort

enhance – we need to make one another better

institutional – we need entities/organizations to help us out

celebration – we need to have fun doing what we do

knowledge – we need to be constantly cataloging information and using it

research – we need to continually look for how to get better/advance

convenience – participation needs to be low in barrier to entry

Here’s what I came up with, using a few attributes from the previous list:

There should be a centralized knowledge base (wiki, blog aggregate, community forum) that promotes research into community ideas, makes it convenient to share ideas, and benefits (enchances) each contributor.

I PROGETTI IN CORSO
I NUMERI

He used to facilitate CIA think tanks using his creative techniques. As well as in his books, Michael’s website provides insight into some of these techniques. I am particularly fond of the Koinonia technique, that was taken from Socrates, and used by others such as Einstein and his buddies. With the rise of the creative class, and the rare promotion of creativity in education, groups (see Jelly and Coworking) could benefit largely by utilizing techniques like Michalko’s.

He writes in the present using SVO-P structure. The Trading Tribe Process developed by Seykota and Charles Faulkner is a haven of self-development for many. Ed is also a musician. The Trading Tribe community epitomizes community building at it’s finest.

Ed Seykota’s analysis of traders seems to ring true for software developers as well. The TTP philosophy largely relates to the idea of coworking and highlights an area of potential for it’s members.

Traders are notoriously self-reliant and fiercely independent. Going it alone and Doing it Myself (DIM) is often part of the culture.

Traders also know that trading intimately reflects their moods, feelings and inner natures – and that they can improve their trading by working on themselves. The Trading Tribe holds that such inner work, involving the interplay of the ego and the subconscious, is, ironically, essentially impossible on your own, yet rather natural in a group or tribe.

The Trading Tribe realizes that deep down, we are not separate; we are interdependent and interconnected. This realization collapses the boundary between spirit and matter, between the inner and the outer, between the self in here and the world out there – and facilitates self-actualization.

What consists of your daily grind’? I usually get up pretty early – 5 or 6 am. Try to get to the gym http://www.cardinalfitness-fortwayne.com/ – some times I am successful. After the gym, I make my way down to the home office and check e-mail, do some reading – mostly simple, easy tasks. I try to see the family prior to them leaving to school. After that, I find I get my most productive work done from 8:30 – 11:00. I try to “cram out” projects during this time. I try to make certain days my “meeting” days – I need relatively large blocks of time left open to work and think. So, I try to have 3-4-5 meetings in a single day – this leaves the next day completely open. And, sometimes I seek an afternoon nap.

Where do you work currently? Home office

What excites you about coworking? Variety, interaction with people, serendipity, sharing together, learning together

How many days with you be at OurSpace in a week? I not sure, 2-3 days probably. Although, I like the idea
drop in – just dropping in for an hour, not necessarily a whole day.

Last night, WTTW’s Chicago Tonight had a segment on what is being called “coworking,

Last night, WTTW’s Chicago Tonight had a segment on what is being called “coworking,” and part of the segment was about OfficePort.

For those who don’t know, or haven’t heard the term before, “coworking” refers to an office-like setting where people, mostly freelancers and entrepreneurs, share office space, ideas and things found in general “Corporate America” office settings. However, office politics doesn’t play much of a role, and the only person looking over your shoulder, checking your work is you. In a “coworking” space like OfficePort, the people looking over your shoulder are actually looking at you, bouncing off ideas, listening patiently, offering suggestions or guidance or just shooting the breeze. I’ve come to think of it as the more enjoyable parts of “Corporate America” office settings, the parts that developed friendships, mentors and the like.

If you’ve followed this blog, or you’ve followed me on Twitter, my plight over the last year is no secret. I’m more used to suffering quietly, but once September 2008 hit and layoffs went through the roof, I thought it might be helpful to start sharing my experiences, having been laid off in April 2008 and experienced a steady stream of rejections (or absolute silence) since. Even starting a consulting company has proven fraught with challenges no book or person can offer solutions on how to overcome.

Life moves pretty fast, yes, but sometimes it moves in the wrong direction.

But anyway. Back to this whole “coworking” thing.

Since moving back into my parents house last October (lease was up + no job + grad school = no money), I turned my mother’s dinning room into an “office.” I basically took over the dinning room table, moving only when company was expected. I had papers and law books spread out when I was completely my Master of Science degree, and those have now been replaced with attendance rosters from teaching, articles, mail of various types, useless insurance papers and pads of paper full of notes from conference calls, business ideas and what not. My mother, bless her heart, has been willing to forgo the mess knowing I’m “starting up” and thus rather short on funds.

One project has paid off handsomely, decidedly better than expected, and there is just enough wiggle room to find an office, if the price is right, or an apartment and move out. Bare in mind money is tight. I had to pay off student loans, which though excellent to have off the books, also set me back a bit. I have enough to either move out, or rent office space, but not both.

The temptation to move into an apartment was unbelievable. Being 28 and living at home with your folks, especially way up by Wisconsin, sucks. I enjoyed my four years in the city, in the Lakeview neighborhood, and longed for the day to move back. Perhaps not to the same neighborhood, but back to the city. My two and a half hour commute would be cut considerably.

Yes. You read that correctly. 2.5 hours. Doesn’t matter if I take Metra or drive to Linden (Wilmette) and take the Purple Line. Metra might shave off half an hour, but it is still 20 minutes to the train station, when the weather is nice.

So moving out was enticing. When I lost my job and had to move home last year, though, I made myself a promise. I would not move out until I was absolutely certain I would not move back again. Sounds like a rather hefty goal, and it is, but I think it is achievable. Not in the time frame I originally envisioned, but still attainable.

Earlier this month, I was presented with two options: Sublet an apartment from a friend of mine who got a job that required relocation, or rent office space from OfficePort.

It was not an easy decision, but renting office space from OfficePort is the more strategic, long term move. Why? Because building my business is a necessary step to achieving my goal of permanently moving out of my parents house. Building a business, consulting or otherwise, requires finding and cultivating relationships. Strategic relationships, meaning I need to be around people who possess skills I don’t necessarily possess. As it turns out, there are a number of skills I don’t possess, but that is actually a good thing. Why? Because it means there are many new things for me to learn!

OfficePort, it turns out, is full of people who are bursting with ideas, and share them freely. Sound familiar? I bet it does. Being a big believe in open source, making things freely available, the office setting at OfficePort felt completely natural. I found this out by attending a number of events hosted at OfficePort, like Twitter Networking Lunches on Wednesdays, and TechThursdays. The vibe is just awesome, which was made even more so after SocialDevCamp that produced AwesomeLists.

And that energy is feeding an idea I’ve had rolling around in my brain for the past few months, which I’ll write about at a later date.

On the Chicago Tonight segment, my portmate, Sally Odowd was interviewed, and talked about working from home and the challenges that entails. It hadn’t occurred to me that watching TV, or doing anything other than working while at home, was a distraction. Perhaps because I don’t watch much TV, I watch stuff online. Working at home though, can be quite boring. There’s no one here during the day but me, and though Twitter, Facebook and Skype provide more interaction than me talking to myself, it doesn’t quite do the same as talking to people in the flesh.

Technology has yet to convey the same type of energy you get from just being around people. And at OfficePort, the energy is good, positive energy. From Sally to Justin to Maura to Jason to the others whose Twitter handles I still need to commit to memory…the people make the office.

So if you’re like me, having been laid off and decided striking out on your own is, if nothing else, a way to pass the time, check out OfficePort. Or check out other “coworking” locations to see which one feels right. Talk to other people there, attend events, do whatever you need to do find the right spot. I can tell you from experience, it makes a big difference.

And if a 2.5 hour commute down to the office (yes, that is 5 hrs round trip) doesn’t stop me, what is stopping you?

IndyHall Labs a place for software ideas to come together Philadelphia Business Journal – by P

IndyHall Labs a place for software ideas to come together

Philadelphia Business Journal – by Peter Key Staff Writer

A founder and member of a co-working space in Old City have started a company that members can use to develop software in collaboration.

IndyHall Labs was started at the beginning of the year by Alex Hillman, a co-founder of Independents Hall, and Jason Allum, who belongs to the co-working space.

Its Web site, labs.indyhall.org, now has three applications available for download, one of which is free. Hillman said it has two other applications about to come out, although it may sell one to a customer rather than make it available through its Web site.

Hillman started Independents Hall in spring 2007 with Geoff DiMasi, owner of P’Unk Avenue, an interactive design studio on Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia. It moved last May from 32 Strawberry St., where it had 24 desks in less than 1,800 square feet, to 20 N. 3rd St., where it has 47 desks in 4,400 square feet. It has about 100 members across three membership levels — full time for people who want to make it their primary workspace; light for people who want to work there sometimes; and basic for people who want to be part of its community and work there occasionally.

In April of last year Allum, a former employee of the Web design firm now called Razorfish Inc. and member of Independents Hall, began working on an application called RipIt. It enables users of Apple Inc.’s Macintosh computers to easily load the contents of their DVDs onto their computers or storage hard drives.

To speed things up, he asked people in the Independents Hall community to help him develop the product, which started selling online in August 2008.

As work on RipIt was winding down, the people who had been involved said they would like to do similar things in the future. Allum had a follow-up in mind called Multiplex, which allows Mac users to manage their movies the same way iTunes allows them to manage their songs.

As Allum and a team of Independence Hall members began working on Multiplex a few weeks after RipIt was launched, he and Hillman began formalizing a structure for enabling Independence Hall users to work together — and get paid for their efforts — without having to spend a lot of time haggling over agreements for each project. After consulting with a lawyer, they launched IndyHall Labs at the start of the year.

Since Hillman and Allum own it, IndyHall Labs is not a cooperative, but it largely functions like one. Through it, people can suggest projects; enlist help or volunteer to work on others’ projects; and determine how participants will be paid.

IndyHall Labs takes a small fee for each project to cover overhead and for future expenses, such as additional legal advice.

“It’s a keep-the-lights-on fee,” Hillman said.

Multiplex wound up being the first application developed by IndyHall Labs. In May, the Web site MacUpdate included RipIt and Multiplex in a package of applications it put on sale for a reduced price and sold 45,000 of each in two weeks.

Besides Multiplex, the applications IndyHall Labs has available on its Web site (labs.indyhall.org) are MultiFirefox, which it gives away, and Twistori Desktop, which it sells.

MultiFirefox enables developers to run multiple versions of Firefox simultaneously so they can make sure applications they are updating for the latest version of the browser software still work with older ones.

Twistori Desktop is a desktop version of a Web site called Twistori, which allows users to select one of six words — love, hate, think, believe, feel or wish — and then displays Twitter posts that contain the selected word. Twistori Desktop allows users to choose their own sets of words for the Twitter posts they want displayed.

Allum and Hillman hope IndyHall Labs can grow to the point that it enables Independents Hall members — and others in the area — to earn enough money to allow them to work only on projects they like.

“There’s a lot of really talented folks around Philadelphia who can build a lot of cool stuff,” Allum said. “It’s just a matter of getting them into the right situation.”

Yesterday I took part in my first Jelly session — and I’ve got to say it was a fun and productive experience that I will be repeating in the future. Jellies are informal, free coworking events that are open to anyone. There were 10 participants at the Jelly I attended, from a range of different backgrounds although they were mainly freelancers, as you might expect. At times, particularly in the morning, the atmosphere was studious and productive, but there was also some interesting chat and opportunities to make new connections.

I always find that a change of scenery does me good, but considering that I was working in a room with 10 other people, sitting around a conference table, and occasionally getting stuck into conversation, I was surprised at the amount of work I got through (and that’s despite the speed of the Wi-Fi connection getting a little slow with 10 people working away).

If you’re feeling a bit isolated at home (or perhaps you just want to brainstorm some ideas) and would like to try out the coworking experience, but perhaps aren’t quite ready to commit to membership of a coworking space, attending a Jelly would be a good first step.

The first Jelly was started in New York back in 2006 by roommates Amit Gupta and Luke Crawford, who originally wanted to recreate some of the benefits of working from an office (without having to work from an office): brainstorming, sharing and camaraderie. So they started inviting people over to work from their house occasionally, and thus Jelly was born. It’s an idea that has spread worldwide.

The Jelly I attended was organized by CoWorkingWest and held in the nice office space of The Office, Bristol, UK, but Jellies are held in over 100 cities all over the world. (Some of them are even held weekly.) If there isn’t one near you, you can always start your own — you just need to pick a venue and get some people involved. They are often held in people’s houses, but also take place in other locations, like coffee shops and offices. As long as there is space for everyone, power and Wi-Fi, you can have a Jelly.

Have you tried working at Jelly?
