Denny crane.

No but seriously, Boston Legal is a very good show. Maybe being a lawyer isn’t so bad. Nah, medical profession for me…unless i fail in which i’ll be pretty much screwed.

So far I haven’t done much these holidays, just chilled back sitting with a lemonade whilst watching some old school Dragonball Z and now Boston Legal. My life is pretty boring at the moment. Still missing Sim…

Still craving money to buy stuff on ebay – a crumpler, a D300S, a new MacBook Pro, a new iMac, a 24-70mm Nikkor f/2.8 AF-S lens… Even a new HD camcorder with a large image sensor. But I literally have no cash money, and hence must work with kids till christmas.

Speaking of work, training day from yesterday was longer than expected. We will be working with a Nikon D70 with a 18-75mm lens, an umbrella flash bounce system, an iMac and some other gear. I’ll be in charge of the store on Wednesdays (also known as 2IC Wednesday as all supervisors tend to take their days off on Wednesday). The next issue is the actual Santa set, we’ll be working with the theme of “Aussie Santa” and as a result we’ll not only be working with Santa’s throne…but also Santa’s UTE! We don’t even know how we can really integrate the ute into these photos…Should be interesting how this all goes when my first shift starts on Saturday.

By the way…

Denny Crane.

Ador piesa asta, am descoperit-o de curand pe un blog “prieten” si de atunci o ascult incontinuu. Versurile nu inceteaza sa ma uimeasca.

“Life Is Wonderful”

It takes a crane to build a crane
It takes two floors to make a story
It takes an egg to make a hen
It takes a hen to make an egg
There is no end to what I’m saying

It takes a thought to make a word
And it takes some words to make an action
It takes some work to make it work
It takes some good to make it hurt
It takes some bad for satisfaction

La la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ah la la la la la la life is wonderful
Al la la la la

It takes a night to make it dawn
And it takes a day to make you yawn brother
And it takes some old to make you young
It takes some cold to know the sun
It takes the one to have the other

And it takes no time to fall in love
But it takes you years to know what love is
It takes some fears to make you trust
It takes those tears to make it rust
It takes the dust to have it polished

Ha la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ah la la la la la la life is so full of
Ah la la la la la la life is so rough
Ah la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ah la la la la la la life is our love
Ah la la la la la

It takes some silence to make sound
It takes a loss before you found it
And it takes a road to go nowhere
It takes a toll to make you care
It takes a hole to make a mountain

Ah la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ha la la la la la life is wonderful
Ha la la la la la life is meaningful
Ha la la la la la life is wonderful
Ha la la la la la life it is…so… wonderful
It is so meaningful
It is so wonderful
It is meaningful
It is wonderful
It is meaningful
It goes full circle

Games Mistress is thankful both of these men wear Cardinal red.

Happy (American) Thanksgiving from the Ladies!

While we’re thankful for family, friends, and the chance to stuff ourselves with food while in the company of said family and friends, we here at Ladies… are also thankful for what the sports world has given us over the past year.

Buffalita: 1. Football pants. does a booty good. Especially on the BILLS new QB signing Brian Brohm ♥

2. Hockey fights. It otherwise could be a very boring, fast paced, and confusing game. But throw a couple of sweaty cute dudes in the mix with sweat and helmets flying and you got yourself a lady hockey fan!

Lady B: I am thankful for baseball. When winter is at its bleakest, that countdown to spring training makes life worth living. AND it gets my mind off the Toronto Maple Leafs not making the playoffs.

Crane: 1. Roy Halladay.
2. Roy Halladay.

Minda: I am thankful for Zack Greinke, and all the people who didn’t let him quit baseball forever. Without those people, KC fans would have had no reason to even care about the Royals this summer. And with time, the gift of Greinke keeps getting sweeter. The Cy Young win was an excuse to watch his highlight reels on repeat, and we got the added bonus of learning that he’s becoming a saber-nerd like his teammate Brian Bannister. Together, they’re bringing FIP to the masses!

Having Thanksgiving be an opportunity to appreciate the Royals is an odd thing, but anything that brings the joy of summer to the bleakness of the impending winter is better than all the turkey and stuffing in the world.

Raven: 1) GMGM. That’s Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee. (Get it?) Thanks to this wonderful man, my hockey team is kickass. I now know what it feels like to experience playoff hockey because this man is a genius. I should also shower the Caps PR staff with some thanks, if only for coming up with the idea for the sexy photos on this site. I do not, however, thank them for the site.

2) Art Modell. Hate me all you want Clevelanders. If this man hadn’t moved his team to Baltimore, my city still wouldn’t have a team, and my excitement for football on Sundays would be non-existent. I love my Ravens, even if at times it sounds like I don’t. That’s just the pessimistic Baltimore sports fan in me. Plus, if we never had the Ravens, then this gem never happens.

3) David Steckel’s parents. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Steckel for procreating and making such a beautiful human specimen. Seriously, how can you not fall madly in love with this guy?

4) Fantasy Sports. I LOVE fantasy sports. It forces me to be a better fan. If I didn’t play fantasy, I would not know that Clete Thomas is hot. I watch Canucks games hoping that Shane O’Brien gets in a fight so I can win the PIM category that week. No matter the season, no matter the sport, I’m checking a fantasy site. Wait – maybe I shouldn’t be thanking the inventor of fantasy sports because now I don’t have a life. Ahh double edged sword, I guess.

Games Mistress: I am thankful that I am dating a Saints fan so I can have a good reason to jump on the bandwagon.

I am thankful that Albert Pujols and his three MVPs belong to Cardinals’ history. (I would, however, be MORE thankful if we could sign him to an extension soon. Please?)

Lady Liz: I’m thankful to my family for raising me to be a Yankees/Giants fan. My sports watching experiences would have been a whole lot more heartbreaking if I were raised a Mets/Jets fan. And speaking of the Giants, I am thankful they will be playing this Thanksgiving on what otherwise would have been a boring football day. I can’t bring myself to get excited about a game involving the Lions. Sorry, but I just can’t. And watching the Cowboys win is one of my least favorite things to do. They are playing the Raiders. The odds of them losing are slim.

Aren't you glad Mario Manningham has to work Thanksgiving?

The Blonde Bomber: I’m thankful for a new stadium and new championship ring.

I’m thankful for the comeback ass whopping of my boy Peyton against that punk Brady!

I’m thankful for a trip to the Rose Bowl for my Buckeyes, in spite of a sub par season!

Maggie:
Over the last five years, one of my teams has won it all in either football or baseball eight times. I’ve gotten a little spoiled. Still, I’m thankful that when I wander down to see a baseball game, I’m seeing a Phillies game. They may not be the World F*cking Champions (Thanks, Chutley) again this year, but they still gave me an extra month of baseball to care about.

I’m thankful that I got to listen to Harry Kalas call games for twenty years, and that I got to watch him sing ‘High Hopes’ in person. I’m thankful that, before we lost him, he got to call the last out of a Phillies World Series win.

I’m thankful for basebrawls, cheesteaks at CBP, chardonnay at Fenway (shut up, the other option was Bud Light), Jerry Remy, the Phillie Phanatic and the fact that Spring Training is only fourish months away.

And I will be eternally thankful for anyone who puts Brett Favre on his ass this season.

CuteSports: I’m thankful for:

* being part of this kickass group of gals who know their BAPIP, butts and bundt cake – we’re well-rounded Ladies…

*warm summer days tailgating with my boyfriend and sitting outside watching the Brewers – my favorite way to spend a day (and the thought of that getting me through a long, cold, not-yet-started winter)

* no more Favre/Packers mediapalooza’s this season.

Happy Thanksgiving! What has sports made you thankful for this year?

After such a fun time on weekend 1 on the set of Karolyn Szot’s Message Received, I was stoked

After such a fun time on weekend 1 on the set of Karolyn Szot’s Message Received, I was stoked to return for another dose of movie making magic. On the agenda for the second weekend? Blood! Car Crash! Cops! Uh, exchange students!

I was lucky to get a couple of hours off Saturday morning as only a bare bones crew was needed to shoot our two actresses, Emily Marso and Blake-Briana McKay, driving. Just a couple of shots and a simple scene. Easy as pie, right? Well…

Sign reads "Movie Set! Not Real!". What we mean: please don't call the cops on us again.

The story I heard when I arrived on set? A very concerned passerby had called the cops that morning thinking that the two wrecked cars we had on set was the scene of a real accident. Oh well, at least that means a big thumbs up for prod design well-done.

Karolyn gave herself multiple cuts and bruises before putting some on Johnny.

Another challenge that filming a car crash scene brings is the ridiculous number of people who deliberately slow down to get a better glimpse of your set as they’re driving by. Maybe it was to see if there was a famous actor in the vicinity. Maybe it was to get numbers to buy the American version of 4D. Maybe it was to gawk at the awesome blood effects Karolyn did for our actors. Either way, our crew definitely learned more about directing two-way traffic in one lane. It also helped that we had two actors in cop uniforms on set. I’m not sure what it was, but people tended to drive past faster when it’s a cop signaling them to move. Or so they thought!

Taking a crane shot of the entire crash scene.

When it was time to set up for our beautiful crane shot, it was all hands on deck. Like a life-sized balance scale, we had to figure out the exact number of sandbags to hang on one side to counter the weight of our camera on the other. It was almost like watching a team challenge on Survivor. “Take one more bag off,” one would say. “No, you just have to move one closer to the center!” another would reason. The team eventually emerged triumphant! And our crane shot went as smooth as silk.

Shooting outdoors often means racing against time, especially when you’re dependent on sunlight. Good thing our crew heads had their act together. We completed our shots with time to spare and made some new friends with the many deer roaming the woods near us. I’d say our day was a success!

If you thought the shoot so far has been packed with plenty of adventure, wait until you hear about the happenings on our final day of shoot. That story to come soon.

It’s a long one, and it’s an important one, and it’s the only article from a major media outlet that has ever made me cry.

By coming out, Brendan Burke is standing up and showing the entire LGBTQA sports community a level of courage that very few other athletes have ever shown. And by accepting him and supporting him and loving him, his father is sending the message that there’s nothing to be afraid of with gay athletes. That having a gay man in the clubhouse is no worse than having a black man there or a Jewish man there, which is to say, there’s nothing wrong with it at all.

And you know, maybe as a queer girl and as a Maple Leafs fan, I’m biased. But unlike homophobia, my bias won’t hurt anybody.

So congratulations to Brendan Burke, my hero of the year.

Everyone needs to know Colin Meloy, especially those of you from Montana! As front man of the well-known band, The Decemberists, Colin is also a native Montanan (from Helena). At age 35, Colin has already traveled the world solo and with his bandmates (most of whom are from Portland, OR), and has had a more than successful career. I was lucky enough to see him play two years ago while on tour in Seattle. Here is his solo website.

2

His unique voice can soothe away your sorrows and you can’t help but get sucked into the lyrics. This is the kind of music you can sit and meditate on. He’s also extremely entertaining as you’ll see in the first video below. My favorite song from Colin is The Crane Wife series (it’s broken into three parts), but it is from The Decemberists, and not his solo album. Therefore, I’ve included the video for it (second video, best part at 5:45), and one from his solo career. I hope you enjoy them! Also, buy his CDs, you WON’T be disappointed.

2

Meanwhile, Gus and I will be on our way to Montana for Thanksgiving. We’re leaving after I get off work and driving halfway today and the rest in the morning. Hopefully we get lucky with the weather! I’m looking forward to seeing my family, and especially my Aunt Mickey who is a regular reader of this blog… Hi Mickey! See you all soon!

Shocking pictures have emerged of a stark naked couple having sex on clock tower in the middle of a busy shopping centre. The Australian couple were snapped after startled onlookers noticed them clinching in the precarious, and extremely public, position on the edge of the balcony. The photos were taken in the heart of Sydney on Friday afternoon, at the historic clock tower opposite the bustling Broadway Shopping Centre.

Squirrel mother goes nuts and attacks dog trying to eat her baby

They have a bit of a reputation for a vicious streak, but this dog certainly got more than it bargained for after pouncing on a baby squirrel it found on the ground.Moments before the hapless baby would have been torn apart, these images show its mother appearing to leap off a nearby tree and attacking the surprised dog.

The squirrel gets ready to leap off the tree and its terrified baby is pounced on by the dog

Using its sharp teeth and claws, the squirrel tore into its canine opponent and distracted it so the baby could escape to freedom. It is unclear if the images have been edited, but the startled dog appears in considerable pain as the squirrel bites into its flank. The surprise assault gives the baby squirrel just enough time to climb back up the nearby tree before its mother is thrown clear and escapes from the dog.The baby squirrel appears to have fallen to the ground as it was being helped up the tree.

The dog snarls in pain as the squirrel leaps in to attack it – and the baby makes a leap for the safety of the tree

Spotting the helpless creature on the ground, the dog pounces and traps it underneath its front paws as it closes for the kill. But it appears to have underestimated its diminutive opponent, as the brave mother squirrel clearly has no intention of letting her baby become dinner and rushes to its aid by jumping on the dog’s head. After the whirlwind attack the mother squirrel springs free of the dog and rushes her baby back up into the safety of the tree. The frustrated dog is left sitting forlornly at the base of the tree as its prey escapes into the upper branches. The images appeared on a website that was set up solely to promote them using Weebly, a website creation programme.

The folks at The Geek Group built a camera crane for less than $1000. In the video embedded after the break a presenter takes you through the different parts that make up the boom and how it is operated. This feels like something from a Junkyard Wars challenge as most of the parts are scavenged or from an industrial surplus store. Don’t let that sour your opinion, what they’ve ended up with is amazingly functional.

The base of the unit is a rolling tripod used for television cameras from around the 1960’s. The aluminum boom attaches to the base with a few large bearings and features a fine tuning balance system. The camera mount is motorized and can be moved using a joystick or set to scan automatically. It’s nice to see more examples of custom camera mounts. Obviously this isn’t a build for everyone, but as cameras and camera equipment become more readily available it makes high quality video production available for the masses, not just the networks.

No? Michelle and Kevin McCarthy do. They returned to their house in Santa Rosa, California to see this.

The 90ft lifting machine had been trying to move a 150-year-old oak tree, but it was too heavy and the crane toppled backwards. Kevin said: "I think we’re just in shock right now."

One neighbour who saw the crane crash into the house said it seemed to happen in "slow motion". The hoist’s owner insisted the smash in Santa Rosa, California, was a freak accident. Check out a big image after the jump.

THEY were symbols of thanks for preventing two countries from going to war over a drunken misunderstanding.

And now the silver punch bowl, cup and salver given to the American admiral who saved the day are going under the hammer in Edinburgh.

Russia and Britain almost went to war in 1904 over the Dogger Bank incident, where a nervous Russian fleet opened fire on British fishing vessels in the North Sea.

But the Americans stepped in and negotiated a truce between the two nations, who were so grateful that they sent gifts.

Russo-Japanese War

With a combined estimation of £150,000, the items are expected to cause a stir when they go up for auction next month.

It was on October 21 1904 that a Russian fleet set sail for Japan where the Russo-Japanese war was in its tenth month.

When they reached Dogger Bank – a large sandbank 100 miles of the coast of England in the North Sea – they were tense and on the lookout for Japanese torpedo boats that they thought were in the area.

The drunk captain of the Kamtchatka supply ship mistook a Swedish fishing vessel for one of the enemies boats and sent out a signal to say he was under attack.

And later that evening when thirty British fishing trawlers were spotted by the Russians they opened fire, believing they would be attacked themselves.

“Pirates”

Several fishermen died, many more were wounded and The Crane was sunk.

But losses would have been worse if the Russians were firing straight – one of the fleet even fired at their own ships.

The incident caused outrage in Britain, with the press branding the Russians pirates. The Royal Navy was mobilised whilst Russia promised to look into the incident and punish those responsible.

With the situation escalating out of the control, the Americans stepped in to try and resolve things diplomatically.

Rear Admiral Charles Henry Davis Jr. led the talks and by February 1905 had brokered a deal that both sides were happy with.

Punch bowl

The fishermen involved received £66,000 compensation from Russia and a memorial was unveiled in Hull the following year.

Both countries sent Davis gifts to thank him for his work.

The Russians punch bowl is styled as a Viking longship on an oval base, with twelve matching cups that sit around the base.

And the British gifted a tall cup and salver decorated with pre-raphealite ladies and dolphins.

Both items are up for sale at Lyon and Turnbull on December 1.

There is a statistically-inclined rant after the jump that I think you all need to hear.

Health is a skill. It’s why Barry Zito is as valuable as Rich Harden. It’s why Dan Haren is more valuable than, uh, *thinks*… Brandon Webb! (Haren is also a better pitcher than Webb, but that’s not totally the point.) Are there exceptions? Yeah, sure. Like Joe Mauer, who’s very close to being the most valuable position player in the AL even with that time he missed because of his injury (his defense might put him ahead of Zobrist, but I haven’t looked at the BtB end-of-year catcher fielding stuff yet). But basically, even if one’d try to make the argument that if Mauer can do it, Carpenter can, you still have to look at the fact that Lincecum averaged 2.2 RAR a start to Carpenter’s 1.8. Even if Carpenter had made 32 starts this season at that level of production, he still comes in 13.5 runs behind Lincecum, which is a little more than one win. At their current per-start RAR, you’d have to have Lincecum make only 23 starts to get his total RAR as low as Carpenter’s. Carpenter would have had to make 40 starts to match what Lincecum did in 32.

Wainwright averaged 1.5 RAR per start, which is nice for him I guess, but his total still put him… here, I’ll just give you the top NL RAR from Fangraphs:

Tim Lincecum, 71.1

Javier Vazquez, 58.7

Dan Haren, 55.5

Adam Wainwright, 52.3

Ubaldo Jimenez, 51.8

Chris Carpenter, 50.2

Josh Johnson, 50.1

And because RAR isn’t the only good indicator of performance (le gasp!), here are the top few in K/BB:

Dan Haren, 5.87

Javier Vazquez, 5.41

Ricky Nolasco, 4.43

Ted Lilly, 4.19

Cole Hamels, 3.91

Joel Piniero, 3.89

Tim Lincecum, 3.84

Chris Carpenter, 3.79

Wainwright (3.21) is 12th on the list. Oh, and here’s the geometric means of the K/9, BB/9, and K/BB ranking out of qualified starters (45 is the best, 1 is the worst) for the 5 pitchers I’m taking seriously at this point:

Javier Vazquez, 278.6

Dan Haren, 267.0

Tim Lincecum, 206.8

Adam Wainwright, 175.0

Chris Carpenter, 169.2

So basically the RAR is Tim Lincecum and then a whole bunch of other guys, and the K and BB stuff still puts Wainwright and Carpenter at the bottom of who we’re looking at voting for. My ballot would be Lincecum-Vazquez-Haren (and if there were 4 spots then Wainwright would make it on there), and if I could give a 2.5 spot to both of them at the same time, I would.

People, do whatever you want with spots 2 and 3, as long as Lincecum’s first.

Imagine if you will that you hired a crew to come and take out an old oak tree from your backyard. Then imagine that you get a call from said crew a few hours later. That call went something like this “Yea hi, we had a little hiccup removing the tree. It’s actually kind of funny really; you’ll laugh when I tell you. See our crane became a little unbalanced and well, smashed through your house”

Now personally I would flip shit, I can only assume the McCarthy’s did the same. Oh and should I mention that Mrs. McCarthy was just in a car accident earlier that week? Luckily no one was hurt in this little mishap. If you’re friends with these people though you should probably stay away for a while, as they’ve either been jinxed or Mr. McCarthy is channeling Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor.

Looking at it in hindsight, did that tree really need to come out? And what the fuck did they need a giant crane for anyway? Why didn’t they just keep cutting the thing until the pieces were manageable? The pictures show guys back there and nice little pieces. Perhaps this company also moonlights as a lumber provider and needed some 20 foot long 2×4s.

One thing is sure though. These are lumberjacks, and they’re not okay.
