It was a decade ago when the indie cult classic hit the world and caused an international fan base o

It was a decade ago when the indie cult classic hit the world and caused an international fan base on one hand and a number of sceptical viewers and critics calling it unworthy of cult status on the other. 10 years since ‘The Boondock Saints‘ was released, with a budget of $8million and a gross revenue of not even double that, the film with it’s unique and perceptive story became a must see everywhere.

However, I bring news. Good, or bad depending on your view, but news all the same. ‘The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day‘ has finally arrived, or rather it’s about to arrive, can you Guess? October 30th, that’s right, Halloween. However, here comes the bad news… The film, based on it’s predecessors cinematic activity is only available for a limited release… In U.S.A. Unlike it’s predecessor though, it’s fairly certain that the film will soon after become widely available all over the world, and in turn DVD release.

The film has a secret of its own to provide though, as all but one of the original cast are back for even more gunslinging; god-loving, evil-eradicating action than the prequel. Including; Sean Patrick-Flanery (Simply Irresistable, D-Tox, Savage Planet), Norman Reedus (American Gangster, Hero Wanted, Pandorum), Billy Connolly (The Man Who Sued God, The Last Samurai, A Series Of Unfortunate Events) and some brand new members, such as the lovely Julie Benz (Rambo, Held Hostage, and TV’s Dexter) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Capote, Crank 2: High Voltage, Star Trek). This is one to see for certain my friends, I hope you enjoy the trailer.

This is a great movie if you suspend disbelief and just have fun watching it. Oh, and the comedy is pretty wacky.

4 out of 5 GT (GT = Good Times)

Funny how Jason Statham has become the late millennium Vin Diesel. Reprising his role as high octane

Funny how Jason Statham has become the late millennium Vin Diesel. Reprising his role as high octane hitman, Chev Chelios, our hero is in pursuit of a Chinese mobster who just so happens to have snatched the marksman’s indestructible heart. Replaced with an artificial heart, Chelios must make his way across the landscape of Los Angeles, feeding himself adrenaline rushes by any means necessary in order to stay alive, murder his nemesis and reclaim his property. Crank 2 goes a little beyond absurdity, but its execution is ingenious and manages to produce more overdosing chase scenes that’ll send goosebumps down your spine.

One of New Line Cinema’s latest Blu-ray Deluxe Editions releasing this week, who doesn’t love revisiting Craig and Smokey’s adventurous start to the weekend. Comic relief in the form of stupidity, chronic smoke and inner city quarrels, Ice Cube’s hilarious gem stands out as one of his most creative and entertaining films of his acting career. Chris Tucker’s coming out party and John Witherspoon’s most underrated film role, here’s the perfect film to roll a fat one too, as you inhale hilarity that’ll leave you half baked.

Another New Line Cinema classic hits Blu-ray with the gritty South Central classic, Menace II Society. Growing up in the slums of Watts, Los Angeles, Caine and Kevin (AKA O’Dog) embrace the streets as they’re parental figure. Pushing weight, sleeping with neighborhood trollops and smoking the competition is all they know, until a grocery store murder places them in a sticky situation that could lead to their incarceration. After a clean slate, the duo continue their chaotic behavior on their search for the American Dream. A more graphic film than Boyz n the Hood, the Hughes brothers keep it 100% gangster and depict the violent nature of the ghetto in California like no other 90’s film.

It’s a slow week for DVDs, with only one major theatrical release — a Jason Statham thriller — making its way to video stores.

Crank 2: High Voltage
0 stars (out of four) Bomb!
Rated R for frenetic strong bloody violence throughout, crude and graphic sexual content, nudity and pervasive language
Lionsgate
Available on: DVD and Blu-ray

“Crank 2″ is a rare breed of film, not because it’s bad but because it lacks value on every possible level.

The DVD cover, imprinted with a stern-looking Jason Statham brandishing a firearm, properly suggests a fast-moving action flick. Trouble is, “Crank 2″ is also a soulless sequel, borrowing heavily from its predecessor while charging forward without stylistic restraint or purpose.

One gets the feeling writers-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were shooting for a dramatic comedy akin to Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” flicks, but Tarantino won’t make a movie this bad unless he loses both his sense of humor and style.

Statham is back as British hitman Chev Chelios, and fans of the first “Crank” will remember that he ended that movie by falling thousands of feet from a helicopter and bouncing off the roof of a car. Turns out he survived only so members of the Asian Triad gang could harvest his legendary heart for their ailing boss.

Fortunately for Chev, gang members give him an artificial heart to keep him alive long enough to harvest his other organs. The plan seems dandy until Chev regains consciousness, frees himself and starts a ridiculously over-the-top and violent search for his real ticker. Making his journey particularly difficult is the fact that his electronically powered replacement heart can only maintain a charge for limited periods, so Chev must repeatedly find ways to shock himself back into action.

“Crank 2″ is loaded with so much violence, sex and profanity, that it qualifies as an exploitation film, but the nostalgic charm of old-school grind house efforts has been supplanted by a forced visual style that seems more experimental than planned. Because of this, “Crank 2” carries a marked sense of desperation, as though Neveldine and Taylor figured they would never be allowed to make another film, so they threw everything they had into the mix.

Even the usually reliable Statham is handcuffed by the project’s goofy, unrestrained nature. He looks tough and all, but his action sequences aren’t as cleverly staged as in the “Transporter” films, and the script is just terrible.

Poor Amy Smart takes the brunt of the punishment, as she’s asked to trot through one embarrassing sequence after another as Chev’s sexy but dim-witted girlfriend. At least she can take solace in the fact that nobody looks good in this movie. Neveldine and Taylor made sure of that.

“Crank 2” is available on multiple home video releases, including a two-disc edition with a digital copy for portable devices and computers. Extra features vary.

ALSO OUT THIS WEEK

“The Office” — Season Five: This quirky sitcom exploiting the personalities and working relationships of co-workers in a Pennsylvania paper supply company, is one of network TV‘s biggest hits. Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer star.

“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” — The Complete First Season: This co-production between the BBC and HBO brought Alexander McCall Smith’s novels about the first female detective agency in Botswana to life on the small screen. All seven episodes, plus extra features, are presented on a 3-disc set.

“Homicide”: The Criterion Collection is delivering a director-approved edition of writer-director David Mamet’s 1991 thriller about a homicide detective (Joe Mantegna) on the trail of a murderer and drug dealer (Ving Rhames). William H. Macy and Rebecca Pidgeon also star.

“Fringe” — The Complete First Season: Season two of this drama about FBI agents working on the fringe of traditional science will kick off Sept. 17. That doesn’t leave much time to pick up this set and catch up.

“The Human Condition”: Adapted from a six-volume novel, this nine-and-a-half-hour Japanese film project delivers the story of a man who rises from labor camp supervisor to Imperial Army soldier. Directed by Mosaki Kobayashi, the saga was originally released as three separate films between 1959 and 1961, but the always-outstanding Criterion Collection has collected them into one impressive package. Presented in Japanese with English subtitles.

“Harper’s Island” — The DVD Edition: The horror series — about a group of friends who travel to celebrate a wedding and end up dying one by one — only lasted 13 episodes, but that was enough to wrap up the loose ends. You’ll find the entire arc here.

“That Hamilton Woman”: Laurence Olivier plays a British Royal Navy officer having an affair with the wife of a British ambassador (Vivien Leigh) during the Napoleonic Wars. The 1941 film was produced and directed by Alexander Korda.

“Bedknobs and Broomsticks”: In this classic re-release from the Disney vault, three children take flight on a magical, musical journey with an apprentice witch (Angela Landsbury). Being sold as the “Enchanted Musical Edition,” the new release has a number of extra features, including bits on the special effects and music.

“Worst Week: The Complete Series”: TV comedy focused on a bad-luck magnet named Sam (Kyle Bornheimer) and the woman he’s about to marry, Melanie (Errin Hayes). When they visit Melanie’s parents, Sam accidentally creates one ridiculous problem after another. Although the program was consistently funny, it lasted only 16 episodes. That’s too bad for fans, but the cancellation may have been a blessing. The setup wasn’t broad enough to last for multiple seasons and the early cancellation means we’re left with only good episodes.

“Local Color”: Dramatic feature about a teen painter (Trevor Morgan) who convinces an aging master (Armin Mueller-Stahl) to take him under his wing for a summer. Written and directed by George Gallo.

Cast: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Clifton Collins, Jr., Efren Ramirez, Bai Ling, David Carradine, Reno Wilson, Joseph Julian Soria, and Dwight Yoakam
Directors: Neveldine/Taylor
Synopsis: In Crank, hitman Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) spent 24 hours in over-drive: fighting, killing, and keeping his adrenaline flowing at full-force to combat a deadly poison injected into his body. Now, in the high-octane sequel Crank 2 High Voltage, Chev has managed to survive—and is about to face a brand new day. Picking up immediately where the first movie left off, Crank 2 High Voltage finds Chev surviving the climactic plunge to his most certain death on the streets of Los Angeles, only to be kidnapped by a mysterious Chinese mobster. Three months later, Chev wakes up to discover his nearly indestructible heart has been surgically removed and replaced with a battery-operated ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity in order to work. After a dangerous escape from his captors, Chev is on the run again, this time from the charismatic Mexican gang boss El Huron (Clifton Collins, Jr.), and the Chinese Triads, headed by the dangerous 100 year-old elder Poon Dong (David Carradine). Once again turning to Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakam) for medical advice, receiving help from his friend Kaylo’s twin brother Venus (Efren Ramirez), and re-connecting with his girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart), who is no longer in the dark about what he does for a living, Chev is determined to get his real heart back and wreak vengeance on whoever stole it, embarking on an electrifying chase through Los Angeles where anything goes to stay alive.
The Verdict: Crazier than Crank, but that’s only to be expected considering Jason Statham’s presumed dead hitman Chev Chelios is alive, not so well, and running around L.A. looking for his stolen heart. The premise is ludicrous—directors Neveldine/Taylor know it, we know it—but that doesn’t make any difference. High Voltage is fast, furious in-your-face fun. Statham clearly relishes being dropped in the middle of another video game-like race against time. And if he’s not taking his kill-or-be-killed predicament seriously, why should we? High Voltage isn’t as fresh as the first Crank—everything unfolds in a been-there-done-that fashion—but Neveldine/Taylor make up for that by putting our hero in the most bloody and hilarious of situations and causing as much mayhem as they can on their limited budget. If only Neveldine/Taylor’s Gamer, now in theaters, was half as entertaining as this whacked-out heart-pounder.
Theatrical Release Date: April 17, 2009

I saw this movie just a minute ago while I was riding a bus going home. I thought it was just an old film but noticing the main casts (who I don’t know the name) who played as the protagonist of the movie Death Race. With my surprise it was an all-new-2009 movie. Even if the bus was over crowded with diluting human I have given a chance to see some scenes but unfortunately I didn’t finished the film because I arrived at home earlier than I thought. Please do click the image to see trailer.

Crank: High Voltage (Crank 2: High Voltage in some regions) is a 2009 American action/thriller film, and sequel to the 2006 action film, Crank. It picks up shortly after the first film left off, retaining its “real-time” feel and adding surrealism. Crank: High Voltage was written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who both wrote and directed the previous film. The film was released in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2009, one day prior to its North American release date. -Wikipedia

People are gonna say a lot of things about this movie, and yeah, whatever, but I fucking love Chev Chelios. This movie is brainless and fun but it was intended this way, see? This is what makes it brilliant. It’s like fuckin Grand Theft Auto, without even having to actually make Grand Theft Auto. Crank 2: High Voltage by far surpasses the first movie. It’s louder, cruder (is that a word?) and dare i say this: better.

For the 3 people out there that did not like, or did not watch the fisrt Crank, Chev Chelios (played by Jason Statham) is a bad ass from Enghlandh (mispellings intended) that fell from a helicopter after surviving a chinese poison (yes, a poison) thats supposedly will make his heart stop if he ran out of adrenaline, thus buying him a perfect, justifiable escuse to do whatever the fuck he wants. In Crank 2, after he fell, he was scooped up and given an artificial heart, which has to be recharged every hour. Thus the plot ensue and we get to see Jason Statham wreck havoc, and makes my heart skip a beat. Crank 2 was so high on surrealism that they had to include montage scenes, title scenes that says “9 seconds later,” and cameos from porn stars.

I read that Crank 2 was shot by cheap cameras straight out of Best Buy, although they used 12 at a time and not afraid to destroy any if deemed necessary. So you see kids? Cheap cameras + Jason Statham + Strippers + Mechanical Heart + Men’s nipples getting cut off (wait for it..its legendary) = GOOD TIME.

The Verdict: 5 out of 5.

I give it that because, ah hell, as much as I love war movies, holocaust movies, 2 hours of talking movies all those pretentious movies, but Crank 2 can’t be wrong. It blows your brain all over the place.

Since I’m having no luck in looking for instructions on how to go to Roosevelt College Cainta, (it’s the Rizal Open tomorrow) I might as well post some short reviews of movies or dvd’s that I’ve seen these past few days. So let’s get cracking!

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

Synopsis:

The first chapter in the X-Men saga, unites Wolverine with several other legends of the X-Men universe, in an epic revolution that pits the mutants against powerful forces determined to eliminate them.

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar, as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, adamantium claws, and a primal fury known as berserker rage.

The film also introduces a team of mutants, including several whose appearances in the movie series have been long anticipated. Movie audiences will meet Team X, a covert military cadre comprised entirely of mutants. Its members are: Wolverine; his brother Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, a feral being of unimaginable power; Wade Wilson, later to be known as Deadpool, a high-tech mercenary skilled at swordplay; Agent Zero, an expert tracker and lethal marksman; Wraith, a teleporter; Fred J. Dukes, also known as The Blob, a morbidly obese and super-strong behemoth; and Bradley, who can manipulate electricity. Leading them is William Stryker, a figure introduced in “X2″ but whose origins and motives are now fully explored, for it is Stryker’s complex relationship with Wolverine that defines much of Logan’s past …and future.

Comments:

I liked the movie enough: fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping, mutants! However, I’ve also seen the “leaked version” of this movie, and I must say, though the pirated version sucked because it was rough around the edges (unfinished CGI, cables showing, crappy editing), when I saw the “official” one, nothing much has changed. Yes, it was more “polished” than the leaked version obviously, but the fact still remains: it wasn’t that great. Don’t get me wrong, the 1 hour and 45 minutes was enough to showcase Wolverine’s past, however, it still wasn’t enough to let us see his character in a different light. Like everything about him is just screaming and letting all hell break loose (and you’re lucky if you’re still breathing after). Maybe I guess, that’s all Wolverine is all about.

Additional note: though they added a ton of mutants in the mix, same mistake: bad writing. Nothing much to look at.

Powers? Ding!

Personality? Powers!

Verdict:

3/5 – Watch it. You might learn a thing or two about our favorite indestructible, claw-wielding X-Men.

MARTYRS

Synopsis:

Lucie is a young girl who escapes captivity and is found by authorities, her body covered in the signs of physical (but not sexual, it is important to note) abuse. Unable to recount what has happened to her, she befriends Anna, her roommate in the orphanage she is placed in. Fifteen years later Lucie (Mylène Jampanoï, Crimson Rivers 2) believes she has found the strangers who tortured her all those years ago and, with Anna (Morjana Alaoui, Marock) as her support/enabler and egged on by the physical (in her mind, of course) manifestation of her own rage, sets out to exact revenge.

Comment:

At first, I thought this was your run-of-the-mill horror flick with a terrifying ghost haunting the lead actress. But man, was I wrong! I won’t get into details what I meant. All I can say is that this sets the limit on how brutal (emphasis on the word: brutal) a movie can get. I bet even the “bravest” fan of the horror genre will squirm when he gets on the latter half of the movie. Waaaaah! That’s it! Let’s go to the verdict!

Verdict:

4/5 – Brutality is given a new definition. I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone, but a “must-see” for horror fans.

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS

Synopsis:

When California girl Susan Murphy is unwittingly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. The military jumps into action and Susan is captured and secreted away to a covert government compound. There, she is renamed Ginormica and placed in confinement with a ragtag group of Monsters: the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement is cut short, however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country. In a moment of desperation, the President is persuaded to enlist the motley crew of Monsters to combat the Alien Robot and save the world from imminent destruction.

Comment:

Sure, it was a nice treat for the whole family. CGI animations, aliens, monsters… Wait? Isn’t that the title of this movie?

To be honest, it wasn’t written very well. It was funny in some parts and most of it was because of B.O.B.! Maybe B.O.B should’ve been the lead in this movie… Hah!

Verdict:

3/5 – Just rent it. Skip iMax.

Crank 2: High Voltage

Synopsis:

Chelios faces a Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working.

Comments:

All I can say is: WTF is all this gibberish! I heard that the first one was absurd, but this was is insane! (and not in the good way) The only thing I liked in this movie was the Chinese prostitute who constantly throw around jokes in this movie, aside from that, it was full of crap. The Godzilla fight scene, the F-word being thrown all the time, racist jokes, the Horse track scene, rubbing against an old lady for electricity?!,and a living decapitated head doesn’t make this a movie worth watching. Heck, it was funny. I heard that it was an movie that doesn’t take itself seriously, but guess what? Maybe you should’ve.

Verdict:

2/5- Don’t bother. I wouldn’t watch it again even if my life depended on it. Japanese kiddie anime made much more sense than this.

“He was dead… But he got better.” e

Jason Statham does ridiculous action better than anyone alive today. The Transporter series, which I’m a fan of, require insane Jackie Chan stunts and impossible car tricks. The first Crank I found to be pretty unpleasant, with all of its music video editing and shaky camera work, but Statham always strikes the right balance between earnest badassness and tongue-in-cheek action star. This film is the most preposterous of any of the films he has made to date and contains scenes guaranteed to offend females, nearly every nationality, and anyone who follows any sort of moral code. It is more charming than the first, however, with its willingness to go the extra mile and the sheer idiocy of the proceedings. If you liked Crank, then Crank 2 is Christmas come early.

When we last left Chev Chelios (Statham), he was falling to his death out of a helicopter. Or so we thought– when he lands, he’s scooped up by Asian organ farmers who take his heart. Chelios was unable to stop the heart from being stolen… but when they threaten to remove his penis, he jumps up, kills the doctors, and the action begins. His electric heart runs on a battery that requires electricity every hour to keep it charged in order to keep his heart pumping. Along the way, he kills everyone in his path, has enough public sex session with his girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart, being a good sport as always), and tries to brush off an Asian hooker obsessed with him (Bai Ling).

The violence is potent– I don’t know which was more shocking, the rifle stuck into a man’s rectum or the man who is forced to cut off his own nipples. The sex is graphic– there are countless topless women, and the sex scene ends up needing to resort to silly pixelation of private parts. The cameos are hilarious– look, it’s Corey Haim! look, it’s David Carradine! look, it’s Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls! The actors from the first nearly all return in some form or another– including some dead characters one wouldn’t have expected. The camerawork and editing are… well, they’re still headache-inducing. I suppose at this point if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and they wouldn’t have made a sequel if the fans felt the style was broken. And Bai Ling… it’s an embarrassing performance of a racist depiction of Asian women, and who better to humiliate one’s self with great gusto than Bai Ling?

And then there’s Statham. The difference between him and other ridiculous action stars of the past like Seagal and Van Damme is Statham can actually act. Check out The Bank Job, last year’s terrific heist flick, for an example– he could be a legitimate leading man. The thing is, he LIKES making these types of films. The fun he has shows in every one of them, which is why he tends to help his material transcend regular shlock and become B-grade action flicks known for outlandish stunts and violence that put a smile on the face of anyone who knows what to expect from a Statham movie. These Crank films to me are several notches below The Transporter series. They try a little too hard to offend, and the editing makes The Transporter look like Russian Ark in terms of shot length. Still, they have their audience, they’re critic-proof, and despite an ending that dares other B-grade action flicks to top it, I have a feeling we’ll eventually get around to seeing a Crank 3.

Crank 2: High Voltage

Mark Neveldine ; Brian Taylor

Jason Statham

Amy Smart

For a minute, this sequel has trouble believing its own premise. Hard-case Jason Statham has somehow survived being thrown out of a helicopter in Crank 1 and is searching Long Beach for his missing heart. He’s been fitted with an artificial organ which needs occasional juicing. Did you know that sex with Amy Smart in the middle of a racetrack generates an electrical charge? That’s as profound as this head-on adventure gets, with all the breasts, racism and brutal violence fans of the franchise expect and deserve.
