Not what you would expect, but this is my second post about the comedic genius that is Christopher Walken in three days. In this clip from Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, he performs his rendition of Lady Gaga’s hit song Poker Face. Freakin’ hilarious/epic/absurd, all at once… I think I love this man. At the same time, it’s a testament to just how ridiculous Lady Gaga’s lyrics are (but I confess, her music is a guilty pleasure). Next, we have Drake doing something that he’s been doing a lot of recently: rehashing a verse. This time, it’s a bit better, as it’s just rehashed from the–evidently–original version of this track. Now that the origin of the verse is out the way, Drake’s lines are nothing special here. Highlights, to me, are:
1) “Pastor Kerney Thomas to these hoes…miwacles,” just because of the Elmer Fudd pronunciation
2) “i’m easily influenced by the n-ggas Im around,” because he’s being honest and admitting that Young Money has influenced him to become “Super Drizzy,” as Wayne refers to him on the Run this Town freestyle, that Wayne actually murked something fierce
Drake verse grade: B-minus

Next, we have Soulja’s verse, which sounds like Gucci Mane ghostwrote it. However, compared to his older shit, Soulja sounds like he’s on his GOAT shit. Realistically, though, when compared to other verses–hell, even the verses from the original “Play Ball”–they’re kind of lackluster. There’s the prerequisite kush reference, the “I’m your sister’s favorite rapper, so fuck you” line, and boasts about how he’s the “greatest rapper of the century” and how he never turns his swag off. Nothing special or groundbreaking from him either.
Soulja Boy verse grade: A very low C-minus

The beat is a typical Boi-1da production: synth horns, heavy bass and a few sound effects threw in for good measure and variety.
Production grade: B

Overall, the track had so much potential, like the 2009 Redskins. However, every time momentum is gained, it falls flat on its face. Keeping with the analogy, Soulja Boy is Jason Campbell, a young guy with a lot of potential to be good, but–well, he just isn’t. (I don’t care about how much money a person has. Money doesn’t equal good rap. If it did, Wall Street bankers would shit on Jay-Z every day of the week and Warren Buffet would send Slaughterhouse back to obscurity.*) Drake would have to be Jim Zorn, only because he’s the leader of the track (as he was on both versions and had the first verse) and fails to really move it in any direction that it wasn’t already headed in. That, of course, makes Boi-1da Dan Snyder, as he’s the guy who put the whole she-bang in motion.
Overall track grade: C.

Here’s a video of Travis Barker’s remix of Slaughterhouse’s song “The One”. I’ve been following Travis’ remixes that he’s done which includes Soulja Boy’s Crank Dat and Miley Cyrus’ Party In The USA. This remix is really good and I’ve watched it like three times in the past hour. Travis Barker is such a great drummer and the video emphasizes it.

This is my first blog. I used to write a journal back in 7th grade but after I lost it forever, I haven’t done much journaling on my life. I want to start this blog for a few reasons:

1. To get me back into shape. I have been slacking a lot lately. I want to get into a bodybuilding competition and track my training. I want to make it so other people can see what I do and learn from my success/failure. (one more thing, I don’t believe in failure. I believe in learning experiences and adaptation).
2. To track the progress my company/nightclub (and other work life)
3. To talk about my personal/social/love life.
4. To talk about my school life.
5. To talk about my future goals and aspirations.
6. To share fun stories from the past (I have wanted to write a book for a while so I think this would be a good start)

These reasons reflect my personality based off of my interests which change over time. This may add or subtract my topics I write about. I would like to take the time to write about the adventuretown of my life uncensored for your viewing pleasure at least once per week.

Okay, so I would try to find some deeper meaning into this video, but that would pretty much just be me bullshitting and I’m not going to fill my blog with bullshit. I didn’t put this video up because I’m a huge fan or spongebob squarepants or soulja boy or crankin dat. I just think it’s pretty hilarious. So, I put it up for everyone’s enjoyment. Enjoy!

A few months back I wrote a post about rap that was very much connected to a specific dance or set of choreographed moves. Sometimes the dance has an extremely positive complementary effect with the track. At times the dance and the lyrical content are literally conjoined. The lyrics become a DIY instructional audio kit that guides your limbs into anticipatory positions throughout the track. I tabbed this type of rap genre, “D-Craze”, because once you start getting down with the moves, you’ll be mad for the track. I’ve been in a club recently where I saw some swag surfing going down in unison amongst a bunch of dudes, wasn’t that corny actually.

Illinois rapper Mr CG is only 19 so probably hasn’t seen his dance in the club circuit yet, but I assure you, it’s going down. I am under the impression that that the only skill Mr CG is excellent at is self promotion. He has generated a signficant amount of MySpace hype and has got YouTube going nuts with boogie board submissions. D-Craze has its place in rap, no doubt about that. Any type of music that has clubs bumping and the youth grooving in unison is certified by those who count in this game. For the Mr CG’s of this world, I say to you this; “good luck on finding the next Crank Dat, because it’s more than likely that you’ll be swag surfing or boogie boarding yourself into oblivion. In the D-Craze game it’s not about fortitude, it’s about relevance, how much does the youth feel your shit. Here’s hoping that whether its surfing or boogie boarding the music keeps up with the dance moves, right now it’s a hare versus a turtle, and we all know how that turned out.

I realize I’m not 18 or 20 years old anymore. So you won’t see me saggin’ and sportin’ ice for days  while chasin’ shorties. I’m past that stage in my life. But I still love real hip hop and I still think I can still get my “grown man” swag rolling when I have to.

I have teens of my own, and I work with teens all the time, so I constantly listen to hip hop, the new and the old stuff.

So I’m not one of the critics that feel hip-hop is a waste or just all garbage. I’m not even on the side of Ice T who declared Soulja Boy as the reason for the decline of good hip-hop. I just believe that today’s hip hop platter is destructive and unhealthy.

Let me explain. Critics of hip hop music as a whole complain about the braggadocio, the portrayal of violence, and the promotion of all things evil in the lyrics. Music as a whole in rock and pop forms has always been somewhat gratuitous in the promotion of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Sometimes discreetly as in “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds“, allegedly a song about LSD by The Beatles . Sometimes overtly, like the song “Cocaine” by penned by J.J. Cale but probably more known by Clapton. So the drugs, the sex, the misogyny, the trash talk, even a lot of the violence has been implied or suggested in music formats since rock and pop have existed.

The problem with hip hop today is that we are losing our options. During the late 80’s, early 90’s, the period when I believe hip hop was at it’s best, there was a variety of hip hop options for the listener.

Those that wanted to be “gangsta”, had their N.W.A.’s and Ice T’s. If you wanted to have fun, we had our Fresh Princes, Tone Loc’s, and Heavy D’s. If you wanted to be nasty there were Luke’s Two Live Crew, and the Too Short’s. For those that wanted to hear females, we had Salt-n-Pepa, The Queen Latifah, and M.C. Lyte,  along with a lot of other females with a variety of styles. For those wanting the heavy lyricists, with political analysis and ghetto poetry in motion, there were points of view from Public Enemy, Tupac, and others. For that true hip hop grind and feel, we had A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, and The Roots.

Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth? What I’m saying, is that we had a full course hip hop meal being served. Some collard greens with ham-hocks and cold water cornbread, black-eyed peas and okra, fried chicken plus the yams AND potato salad. Served with red Kool-Aid and chased down wit’cha’ Mamma’s three-layered yellow cake with chocolate icing unless you wanted the banana pudding.

I have no problem with Soulja Boy’s Crank Dat or the Stanky Leg and the dances that go with them. In fact I believe Soulja Boy should be applauded for “getting on” primarily through the Internet and taking advantage of a new medium. All I’m saying is don’t bombard us with this stuff. How many more dance tunes and blatant sexual reference songs can we have? I think the “Halle Berry” song is hilarious. We need fun stuff for the kids. That’s cake, and kid’s love cake.

But does every hip hop song on relationships or the opposite sex need graphic sexual references? Is there an artist out there willing to challenge themselves and hide a double entendre or two in their lyrics, or at least make us have to imagine what will happen when he secures a moment with the girl of his intentions? It seems that today we need to be told of every move and place being touched. Yes, we had some of these songs in the past also, but there were other options. You see, that’s ice cream, and we all love a little ice cream.

However it seems that outside of maybe 2 or 3 , at most 5 artists, that’s all we get: cake and ice cream. That’s all the powers that be in the music industry are promoting: sweets.

Why? Sweets sell.

But keep this in mind, if that’s all our diet will consist of, our beloved hip hop as we know it will die. Nas took a lot of criticism for his “Hip Hop is Dead” title and argument. I don’t think it’s dead, but we are in need of some vital hip hop nutrition.

Keep eating the candy if you must, but much like a label warning on a pack of black and milds remember this:

It has been determined that this product may lead to serious health problems up to and including death.

Unless we start to demand some real hip hop, we are going to face the death of one the most creative art forms ever. Remember this did not start in the office of some record label big shot, it came from the streets. It represented our lives in every way, not only the negativity and sexual aspects of us, but our political views, our abuses, our history, our complaints. Let’s serve it up that way again, pure from the streets, real meat and vegetables. And then, we’ll choose to have our dessert at our leisure.

Many of the Africans in this class have probably heard of the awesomeness that is the duo called the Naija Boyz. They are two brothers from Nigeria who have done a bunch of remixes to some popular American pop songs (and have become quite a web sensation as a result over 10 million hits on youtube). (you can search for a few more videos on youtube: “african remix”) Enjoy!!!!!!!

From the artist that told you to “Superman dat Ho” comes a sweeter more monogamous single “Kiss Me Thru The Phone”.  I’m an avid fan of hip hop, a hip hop head if you will.  I thought for the longest time that the rhythym gods had forsaken us, but behold!  Soulja Boy brings his lyrical stylings for the whole family to enjoy.

Let’s take a look at the magic of Soulja Boy.

Crank Dat

This little gem was a break out hit of 2007.  It caught fire, just after I graduated from college.  It came complete with its own dance, as seen above.  I consider it more or less the ghetto-macarena.  It’s like hip hop fans were like, “Fuckin seriously? The macarena?? Latin people, we had the dancing first.  Doesn’t anyone remember the Humpty Dance or the Hammer Slide??  The Twist?? You don’t remember that??  Eff this noize, we need to rep our streets again.”  (I don’t actually think hip hop fans say “eff” though)

But in addition to the dance that makes you as cool as everyone doing the dance with you, the lyrics might cause you to burst your anus from shitting awesome.  Upon my first 20 listens, I could only make out: “watch me crank dat Soulja Boy”; “supersoak dat ho”; “yooouuuuu”; and “superman dat ho”.  And to be honest, another 20 listens gave me the same results.  I read the lyrics, and I can say that you’re not missing much, only a lifetime of experiences in which we can learn lessons.

For starters, I gather that this Soulja Boy is a very self-confident fellow telling us to ‘crank’ his dance that he named after himself.  You may call it self promotion, but I call that a part of his mystique.  Need I remind you his worthy addition to modern slang:

Supermanning a ho – noun – an event where, the morning after a session of lovemaking in which the male ejaculates all over a young lady’s back and then gently applies the bedsheet to said ejaculate, the young lady awakens and finds the sheets stuck to her back like Superman. (see also: alone and questioning tastes in men)

Not only does Soulja discuss a wide variety of emotional and intellectual topics like forcing you to do his dance or a social commentary on turning normal women into superheroes, he can tackle lighter fare in life.  Like Super Soakers! I loved playing super soakers as a kid.  My brother and I used to super soak each other all the time in the summer months, but we’d always wear out our arms from pumping all the time, trying to shoot it 50ft.

(Edited: Unfortunately, after speaking with a few black friends of mine, I have realized that Soulja Boy was not talking about the awesome water guns at all.  Nor was it appropriate for me to mention super soaking my brother “all the time”.  Because when you “super soak” someone, you’re not shooting water out of a gun… you’re… you… it’s… …  semen.  You’re shooting semen out of your penis.  Sorry I ruined the surprise.)

All in all, Crank Dat is a worthy addition to American culture.  Now lets look at his latest jam.

Well, if this isn’t the biggest piece of monogamous shit, ever.  “Baby, I want to be with but I can’t so lets kiss through the phone.”  Nom nom nom.  What is this Romeo and Juliet bull crap??  LAME!

This is like the 14 year old’s anthem for extreme abstinence.  Suburban parents warning their children about unprotected kissing and hand-holding.  “Cindy, if you do decide to K-I-S-S, please use protection.  Here’s some Burt’s Beeswax lip balm, it worked wonders for your father and I.”

Where’s the grit?  Where’s the violence?  Where’s the unwanted pregnancies with random sexual partners that leads to broken homes?  Where’s America?  We need to spice this track up!

a DJ known as Phinatik recently spoke to me about his upcoming mixtape called Electrocrunk Vol. 1. it will be done sometime this month and consist of popular hip-hop songs mashed up with techno. if you ask me, that sounds like a perfect combination to get the people’s knees bobbin at a partay.

i think we all are more than sick of the Soulja Boy Crank Dat song, but this techno rendition of it by Phinatik is actually pretty awesome.

I do not think it’s appropriate to celebrate failure, but this is good for hip-hop!

It looks like the era of Soulja Boy has come to an end. Soulja Boy’s new album “iSouljaBoyTellEm” is estimated to only sell around 35,000 copies in it’s first week. The Crank Dat rapper’s first album “SouljaBoyTellEm.com” sold nearly 3.5x the amount, racking in around 117,262 in it’s first week.

Soulja Boy tried to replicate the sucess of his single “Crank Dat” by creating another dance track called “Bird Walk” but the single hasn’t got much radio play or views online comparatively. Topping Soulja Boy will be Plies with his new album “Da Realist” as it’s set to sell more than 90,000 copies in it’s first week.

My first impression of the CD was the title sounds looks like a second grade students first attempt at constructing a sentence. Pretty crappy title. Nevertheless, CD’s should be judged on their content. So here is Soulja Boy’s second albums’ review.

18-year-old ring-tone rapper DeAndre Ramone Way is a divisive force in hip hop. The artist who goes by the nom de guerre Soulja Boy has sold more than three million records but also attracts a battalion of scorn.

In April, outside a concert in Illinois, someone threw a rock threw Soulja Boy’s tour bus window. In custody, the 12-year-old aggressor said, “I hate Soulja Boy.” And this was before the rapper gave a shout-out in November to the “slave masters” for bringing Africans to America for all “this ice and tattoos.”

His latest release should further polarize the rap world. On his second album, the Southerner of Crank Dat (Soulja Boy) fame rehashes the simple beats, chanted choruses and simple drums that made him rap’s first MySpace superstar.

Music fans over 11, however, should steer far clear of Soulja Boy’s tour bus when rocks are around.

Bird Walk is the lead single. Built on a xylophone loop, it’s a syncopated dance track that repeats the phrase, “Watch me hit my Bird Walk!” over spare steel drums and a thin cymbal crash. It’s stale and cloying; what sounded novel onCrank Dat is hollow here. And the fact the single peaked at No. 19 on Billboard, may prove Soulja Boy to be a one-hit-wonder, something Snoop Dogg, Ice-T and Method Man have all claimed.
