 Philippine soldiers using metal detectors, sniffer dogs and an excavator unearthed more than a dozen crates of bullets Friday in the mansion of a local mayor linked to last week’s massacre of 57 people, a spokesman said.

Hundreds of army and combat-trained police units searched the houses of local mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., main suspect in the country’s worst election-related violence, and his father for evidence.

A third house was being searched, an army spokesman said.

“Our troops were armed with a search warrant,” military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Romeo Brawner told reporters, adding security forces were looking weapons in the houses in the southern province of Maguindanao.

Security forces disarmed the Ampatuan family after entering their houses. Ampatuan Jr is already in custody.

On November 23, gunmen attacked a convoy of the family of a local politician planning to run for elections next year, lawyers and journalists. Fifty-seven bodies were later found off the highway, some on a grassy hillside and some buried in a hastily dug pit.

More than half the victims were journalists.

Ampatuan Jr and several as yet unidentified suspects face 25 counts of murder before a regional trial court in Cotabato City on the southern island of Mindanao.

They were accused of conspiracy in the execution of the wife, sisters and relatives of a rival politician, two lawyers, dozens of journalists and other civilians in Ampatuan town.

Local radio reports said soldiers with metal detectors and dogs searched through Ampatuan Jr.’s house, tearing down a concrete wall where the boxes of ammunitions were found. An excavator was also brought in to dig inside the housing complex.

Thursday, soldiers unearthed a large cache of weapons, including three mortars, four machineguns, three anti-tank bazookas, dozens of assault rifles and hundreds of boxes of bullets from a vacant lot about 500 meters from the Ampatuans’ residential complex.

Some of the boxes bore markings of “DND” — initials of the Department of National Defense — and “national arsenal.”

“We’ve started an internal inquiry to determine if these weapons and ammunition were issued by the government and if these were sold by some soldiers,” Brawner said.

The illegal sales of military weapons and corruption in the army bureaucracy are issues raised in the past by rogue soldiers who mounted coup attempts against the government of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Half a dozen armored vehicles mounted with machineguns stood guard Friday outside the walled compound enclosing the mansion of the Ampatuans that ruled for nearly a decade the Muslim-dominated Maguindanao province. Hundreds of security forces also manned checkpoints leading to the Ampatuans’ houses.

Ha! Since the lean to solution that worked so well for the wonderfully behaved Monkey didn’t seem to hold back Homie, I invested in two gates for the doggie day care play pin.

To my surprise I came home to the first non-disaster scene since we began this arrangment! Two crazy, happy dogs, but no mess. No papel towels shredded, no feces to clean up, no escapes, just two happy dogs.

A big thanks to the one who first caged, I mean gated rambunctious youth (or animals, not sure which came
first).

I decided to create this blog mainly for my Grandmother, who is 93 years old and told me to “write something down every day”.

So to force myself to do it, I set up a blog which I figure has a double advantage in that I can also share my experiences abroad with my friends and family.

For those who don’t know, I am going to Bucharest, Romania to shoot a movie called “The Whistleblower” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896872/).

I am currently still in Toronto and fly out in a couple of days but the reality of moving to Romania for six weeks hit me when I saw all of my equipment — all 17 crates and boxes — going on to the shipping truck. My thought was “please make it in one piece!”

I’ll write again in a couple of days when I arrive.

In 1998, I accompanied two of my friends, Neil and Adam, to an interview for summer jobs to work in a greenhouse picking cucumbers. To say we were overdressed would be the understatement of the century. Attired in full suits, all the other applicants had arrived in either overalls or tracksuits. The lady interviewing us, Dawn, however appreciated our efforts. ‘It’s really nice to see someone making an effort lads’ she told us. Although appearing warm and friendly on the surface, she left us in no doubt as to what our fate would be if we were to let her down. ‘I am a nice person’ She began ‘But if you mess me around, I’m not a very nice person at all.’ And flashed us a menacing smile. We gulped and assured her that we wouldn’t. Afterwards we were so pleased with how it had gone that we went for a celebratory cooked breakfast in a nearby department store we were that chuffed. Later on that day Neil received a telephone call telling us where to report on the Monday morning, a greenhouse and produce packing warehouse some 24 miles away. My youthful optimism for the job began to drain away as soon as my alarm clock buzzed at 4.30am; after I’d only managed about 4 hours sleep. Soon the three of us were on our way. After getting lost we arrived, a bit late, at the place. We were immediately split up. I was sent into the packing factory, and my companions dispatched to the greenhouses to being picking. Inside I was under the watchful eye of Ivy, a lady in her late 60s who, it soon became clear, ran the factory with a rod of iron. She told me her mother had first taken her to the greenhouses when she was 13 and she’d been there ever since. She had bandages on her wrists which had been caused by some equipment collapsing on her arms as she’d bent down to pick up a box. The more I heard the less I wanted to be there, especially when Ivy shouted at me ‘Let’s have some cream out of you’ when I failed to keep an eye on the chutes and cucumbers were overflowing onto the factory floor. By 10am I was fighting to keep my eyes open and my attention on the job. By lunchtime I was dead on my feet. It was during the break that I spotted Ivy sitting, alone, on a stack of crates eating fish and chips. I felt sorry for her as, tough though she was, she was just doing her job and seemed to have been ostracized by the others. I took the opportunity to sit and talk with her and discovered that she was a lot like my nanna who had died the year before. Lunchtime over, it was back to it. My two friends had now also joined me in the factory and were put in charge of the cucumber-wrapping machine. Cucumbers were dropped in one end, they got wrapped in cellophane and came out, moved along and down into one of the chutes were I, or another of my new workmates would pack them in boxes. Soon problems had arisen as my friend Neil dropped a pair of gloves into the machine, just for kicks, and laughed as they came out wrapped in cellophane and Adam took the flak. By the end of the day I’d had it and spoke to Dawn later saying it wasn’t the job for me. I was pleased that it was done on the end of a phone as had I been face to face with her, I had little doubt my balls would’ve been crushed in a vice. Neil and Adam stayed on until the end of the week when they made a getaway, in the middle of their shift, in Neil’s 1940s Morris Minor after Neil had upended a barrow full of cucumbers and ran through a gap in the greenhouse. I’ve never worked in such a place since and hopefully will never have to again. Thanks for reading.

Even though the boys and me had already put in an effort for the ‘white pigeon’, release earlier in the week, we decided to go all out, guns blazing, that meant, if you were keen enough to line up and wait, you were going to be one of the first people in the world to own yourselves a pair of these truly limited 1500’s, and wait we did. That’s Sam and I with the golden 1 and 2 on our hands.

Camped out and waiting at the shop before the boys could arrived at the store the Friday morning before, waiting a generous 30 hours. As there were only 9 pairs for the country, a bunch of Brisbane’s dedicated sneaker enthusiasts soon followed, and all pairs were accounted for as the sunshine came around. Whether we chucked a sickie, cut class, or just had nothing better to do, we did what we had to, to feed the sickness…

are those c’s or r’s..? either way, these crates, thousands of them, belong to one of the first lines of distribution of farmer fresh produce and fruits. it is basically a midnight market where secondary distributors can gather low price national products for the san jose metropolitan area. i did forget what fruit these were for.
