Kim Hughes Winter break is such a wonderful time to sit down and create art with your adorable child

Kim Hughes

Winter break is such a wonderful time to sit down and create art with your adorable children.

Coloring books and crayons are a low-cost bundle of fun, and I’d like to show you a couple of ways to use them to their utmost potential.

Even if you don’t have school-aged children/grandchildren, you can still enjoy this timeless craft and share your little works of art with your loved ones. Color and embrace your inner child!

You can cut out images from your coloring book pages and use them as accents. Many times words are included and can be used as a sentiment.

This is a wonderful, quick gift idea. Mat your page and create a door hanger for a child’s room. Or create a “welcome sign” for someone’s front door.

Here’s some coloring book tips:

It’s best to use clear glue when adhering coloring book pages to your project (I used Ranger’s Glossy Accents). You need to be careful that the adhesive doesn’t show through since the paper is so delicately thin.

When cutting out images from coloring book pages, be careful and take your time. Most scissors will glide through the paper with so much ease that you could easily ruin your image. It’s like cutting tissue paper, so cut with caution.

There are many free coloring pages available on the web. Just do a simple search for “free coloring book pages” and you can print them out as many times as you wish. You can also print them onto patterned paper and paper piece.

You can scan a coloring book page and print it so that it won’t have the other image on the opposite side. Plus, you can print onto a heavy weight paper for easier cutting.

Frame your child’s art and give it as a gift.

Coloring Pages from Crayola is where you will find fun activities, as well as coloring pages that you can enjoy with your kids.

Use a light box and trace the image for a hand-drawn look.

Print a bunch of coloring book images, bind the pages together and give them as a gift along with some crayons and markers.

Here’s some ideas of what you can do to jazz up your coloring book images:

use paint, colored pencils, markers or crayons

add glitter

stamp a pattern on them and then cut them out

pop them up to add dimension

apply ribbon stiffener to the paper and make barrettes or magnets

add brads to the center of paper flowers

Enjoy the magic of coloring with your kids. I’m sure that it will be a rewarding experience for all of you!

Happy Holidays!

Crayola Oink! Oink! Make Your Own Piggy Bank Review

I am 24 and I bought this for myself as an incentive to save. I painted pictures of things I want to save for all over it so every time I see it it encourages me to put money in. It’s for travelling and I wanted to put flags on it – the colours weren’t really very good for that so I have some interesting flags – Germany is purple, orange and yellow! But the colours are lovely and will be great for kids – very bright. The paint dries very quickly so there’s not too much mess and something I found useful was that you could draw on it in pencil where you wanted to paint and it rubbed off easily after – so for very young kids you could draw something on for them to paint maybe? The only thing I didn’t like really was that on the box it shows that the pig has an outline for eyes indented into the face but mine didn’t so I had to draw my own on which weren’t that good! The snout is indented though so I don’t know if that was just a mistake with my eyes or if they’re all like that. All in all I thought it was brilliant for grown ups and I work with kids so think it would be equally as good for them.

Last week, I wrote a blog on 10 best practices for managing branded Facebook fan pages. Since, I also wrote Twitter do’s and don’ts that include crisis and time management tips. I’ve written both for a presentation for my social media team at Horizon Media, which was extremely well-received. In fact, the feedback I’ve received has inspired me to share this presentation on Slideshare.net. The same day I posted it to Twitter, the Slideshare team has featured it on their homepage. Take a look at it yourself, and if you like it as well, nominate it for the Slideshare Zeitgeist 2009!

A fun, new interactive way to draw, the clear Glow Dome and inside panel become see-through canvases for creating imaginative scene. Using colored glow markers, the dome lights up drawings when turned on. Designed for children ages six and up, this award-winning toy is fun for one, two, or even three friends to play with at a time.

Kids (geared for 6 & up) can color on the clear dome with the provided markers, and project their images up onto the ceiling. They’ll even spin thanks to the motorized dome. Talk about the perfect slumber party activity!

So, I started checking out pricing. Amazon has it for $43, but I found it in our local Target ads for just $18 through tomorrow! That’s more than 50% off!

Enter your zip code to see the weekly ad for the Target near you.

And be sure to pick up the 3 AA batteries to give with the Glow Dome!

Wander through the Museum until you realize there’s nothing to see there: 10m

Watch the crayon manufacturing process you schlepped all the way out here to see: 11m

Watch the marker manufacturing process you really never thought about much: 2m

[...]

Try to imagine how wide the splatter pattern would be when Karl Marx’s head explodes at the idea of a privately held corporate marketing theme park that performed a simulacrum of the labor-alienating process of industrialized manufacturing; in order to approximate a distant childhood experience of watching a television show which romanticized the original, actual alienating manufacturing process; which nostalgia is induced to stimulate consumption of the corporation’s product; which is, in fact, an endless array of craft supplies for children, the very embodiment of the much-praised artisan and the educational ideal of creativity and self-expression; which all happen to be available for sampling and experimentation right here at the theme park, which by now is revealed to be a sprawling demand generation engine, and damned if you’re gonna drive this far and not get something to take home besides memories and a couple of gloppy paintings made with giant rubber fish: 2 months and counting.

There are a few things in my life that I simply enjoy. Seeing the moon in the daytime, cuddling up in a warm fuzzy blanket to watching a movie, waking up at 5am and knowing I can still sleep for another 2 hours, and getting a new box of crayons in my stocking on Christmas Day. Out of everything though, crayons would be my favorite. I don’t always use them, but I love them just the same. I love the smell of them, their colours, and the possibilities they hold. Anything I want I can colour, and my crayons will bring it to life. The freshness of a new box is awe inspiring. Using a crayon for the first time, it’s so sharp and clean. Seriously, I know I’m 22, but this still brings pure joy to me. I also love all the different and unique colours you can get in the big boxes of crayola crayons. [Sorry I must intervene... When I talk about crayons, you must know I speak only of Crayola crayons. I'm very strict on this, nothing else will do. Okay, you may continue reading my post]. Some of my favorite colours are below in the photo. Yes crayons may just be wax dyed sticks to most people but to me they are little sticks of happiness. If for some sad and terrible reason I fail to get them in my stocking this year, I’ll be the saddest 22 year old child there ever was… just saying. (P.S. Mom there is a box of 120 crayons available… your daughter would like this a LOT!!)

I have heat! I have a huge repair bill but I have heat in the house! Now I’m worried about paying the gas bill when it comes so I’m using the heater sparingly. The only reason I consented to the repairs was that the air conditioning wouldn’t work either without replacing the board and transformer. (Yes, I thought about Optimus Prime too when he told me that – I’ve been hanging around little kids too much).

Speaking of bills to pay, Capt’n … buy a flow’r off a poor girl? No? How about a flower fairy crayon instead then, eh? Click on the link to go to the Etsy shop and purchase at will. They make lovely little stocking stuffers ..

I created the mold from a fairy image I purchased long ago, so I think I can be pretty safe in saying they are one of a kind. I melt the crayons (100% Crayola so I know they’re safe for kids) in the molds (also non-toxic silicone molds that I made so I know they’re kid friendly) and package them up just for you. I have the crayons available in other colors – just drop me a note. So go, go to the store before I throw your slippers at you. Sorry – I’m in a My Fair Lady frame of mind tonight….

My youngest son is an aspiring artist and a bit of a pack rat. (I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.) This convergence of traits, coupled with the every-fall-we-need-to-buy-a-new-box-of-crayons-’cuz-they’re-only-29-cents syndrome, had led to a huge pile of Crayola crayons in the corner of his room, underneath his easel.

Of course, his contention was that “he might need one of them.” But how many Apricot crayons does one really need? So I decided to help him go through the pile of several hundred crayons in various conditions and keep only the best 2 or 3 examples of each color.

The "good" crayons after sorting

even the "fake" crayons look like Crayolas

And in the process, I was struck by Crayola’s brand consistency. We found no less than 5 different label styles in the pile, but they were all unmistakably Crayola. Even the knockoffs from RoseArt — and those hideous imitation crayons you get with the kid’s menu at casual dining chains — looked like Crayola.

Over the last 125 years, Crayola has done a great job of consistent branding. As I see it, they:

kept a consistent look and feel to their packaging and product. Even though the look has evolved with the times for more than a century, the relationship between the appearance of each generation is unmistakable, and even the very first crayons are remarkably similar to today’s.

4 generations of Crayola crayon labels

remained focused on what their brand was about: color and creativity. At times, they strayed a bit beyond their core strengths, but you would have to agree that Crayola’s current offerings of markers, crayons, and other tools for childhood creativity is pretty tightly focused.

managed market conditions. When markers became popular, Crayola didn’t doggedly stick to a “crayons-only” philosophy; they saw the relationship between crayons and markers and jumped aboard, even improving the category with washable markers that parents and teachers could trust.

survived ownership changes. Did you know that Crayola is owned by Hallmark? Yes, the greeting card company. Since 1984, they’ve been a wholly-owned subsidiary. But they’ve kept the brand and messaging consistent.

adapted to a changing world. For example, Indian Red and Prussian Blue have become Chestnut and Midnight Blue, thanks to enlightened racial views and changing political maps, respectively. (This website has some interesting info about the evolution of the Crayola crayon.) But changing a couple of color names didn’t change their market strategy or their brand.

Early Crayola crayon box

We can learn a lot from crayons — there is something creatively liberating about being given a box of colors and a blank sheet of paper for everyone from 2-year-olds to octogenarians. But in this case, I think we can learn a lot from Crayola as well. What can you apply from Crayola to your brand?

~ Norman Podhoretz

I don’t remember coloring much when I was a kid.

My dad used to have a CB Radio in his truck. He went by the handle “Happy Hunter.” Once, he stopped at a truck stop or some such place filled with trucker swill and bought me an enormous coloring book detailing the antics of CB Bunny. I’m sure I colored one or two pages in it, I just can’t remember doing so.

Being a bit of a mess-maker, I do recall tearing all the paper off the crayons and sitting them out on the porch on some boring summer day so they’d melt. I then wadded them all together into a ball of oranges and blues and greens and yellows and put the whole ball of wax in the fridge to cool.

Being a father of four, I also recall many boxes of crayons purchased for the kids. They were, and to some extent still are, the go-to staple on any road trip. They help pass the time, and then fall in the seats to melt on the upholstery and ooze into the cracks when the temperatures soar. My kids get out with neon-green butts.

The other day, my wife called me into her office to show me a news article about Crayola’s plans to go green. We talked a bit about how we’d love to visit their plant in Pennsylvania some day. About how we were this close during our trip to Boston a few years back, but we chose to do Hershey instead. And then, for reasons known only to my minivan, for I swear it drove itself, I found myself stopping at Wal Mart for no other purpose than to buy a box of crayons. The big 120-count box with colors like “bittersweet” and “almond” and “unmellow yellow.” And a $1 coloring book.

Sitting at Bob Evans having breakfast with my folks, I tore the box open and poured out all the crayons. Listened to that distinct sound crayons make as your run your hand through the box searching for the perfect shade of purple.

Can you hear it? Give it a shot. I’ll wait . . .

The other kids in the Bob Evans had maybe two or three colors tops. And there I sat, forty-one years old, with one hundred and twenty.

I smirked.

And later, me and the wee one, we colored . . .

I even stuck my tongue out a time or two, such was my concentration. She did this one . . .

And here’s mine . . .

“Gee, Daddy! You’re good!”

Nah, kid. You’re way better than I am . . .

When was the last time you colored a picture . . .
