Yesterday when I was writing my wrapup on Wings, I was also amusing myself by putting together a web

Yesterday when I was writing my wrapup on Wings, I was also amusing myself by putting together a webcomic in the Halo 3 Theater. Unfortunately I spent about twenty minutes jotting down a really long script then completely disregarded it when it came to filling in the speech bubbles. As a result the comic isn’t nearly as funny or entertaining as it should be. But keep in mind that as my very first machinima was badly scripted and with bad voice acting; this is also no more than a first attempt. Because it’s long and thin I’ve stuck it on the left of this post otherwise it would take up too much vertical space. Oh and watch out because it’s 10 Megabytes big, if you’re on a slow internet connection you might want to consider giving it a short wait.

With the new influx of cash from the parents for my birthday I hope to either buy a super-cheap, small web server. Or I’ll pay for all the wordpress upgrades. Or I’ll rent some server space at a big server farm. Or I’ll do nothing at all, everything stays the same and I create a second blog on Blogger for Media Studies.

The advantage of having a server would be a more complicated but powerful blogging tool with more options, the ability to host video and much more space for storing that video.

I bought the Steam Indie games pack yesterday and I’m thoroughly enjoying all the games.

The sprites and landscapes on Braid are so well drawn it might as well be an interactive painting.
Audiosurf is different but welcome nonetheless.
The Path is avant-garde and just crazy enough to keep your attention.
Everyday Shooter actually has some interesting mechanics behind it which are nicely explained in the ‘notes’ section of the game menu.
I’ve played Gish the most and the multiplayer aspect is a nice touch. The ‘lives’ system and some bad level design did deter me a bit though.
Crayon Physics is what it says on the tin. It’s also beautifully drawn and although the music is nice it gets annoying after a while.
I still haven’t worked out the point to Blueberry Garden, but it looks nice so that’s okay.
Mr. Robot is a fairly standard RPG, I don’t play RPGs very much so I sort of avoided it.
And World of Goo is well deserving of merit, it is fantastic. However it’s also slightly overpriced at £16.

That’s probably the same kind of information you would have gathered from ten minutes on Google but I really want to encourage these games. They are really fantastic and it would be sad to see their creators slink away into some desk-job at an accountancy firm.

Every week, I make it a habit to check the Steam weekend deals. They have been good (Stalker for $4.99) to gooder (Dawn of War 2 for $24.99). This weekend, they happened to feature a whopping 10 indie games for $29.99, or 5 of those for $19.99. I was intrigued, especially when I saw the game list:

Audiosurf

Blueberry Garden

Braid

Crayon Physics Deluxe

Darwinia

Everyday Shooter

Gish

Mr. Robot

The Path

World of Goo

Wow. Even though I already have World of Goo and Audiosurf, I felt like I needed this. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Braid, to see what all the hubub was about. Also, after I looked over the list, The Path is very interesting. I encourage everyone to support indie PC gaming and get this!

Well bought the 10 pack Steam Weekend Deal. Wish Steam would allow me to gift the games I bought wit

Well bought the 10 pack Steam Weekend Deal. Wish Steam would allow me to gift the games I bought with the pack and owned already, but steam only does it with Half-Life 2. Going to do a quick review on how the games is. First if it is Bad/Ok/Good. No numbers or grades, just nice an simple. Then go into why it is that way.

Audiosurf – Good
Bought this game a while back when there was a World of Goo/Audiosurf pack going on. This game is pretty much like Guitar Hero/Rock band but you race along this track hitting bricks. You can pick form your own songs, anything works, and the game does all the stuff needed to make a track.

Blueberry Garden – Bad
No idea what the fuck to do. And pretty heavy computer specs needed. Heavy downside that the controller doesn’t work.

Braid – Good
It was a hit on Xbox 360 and it is now on PC. It is a great platformer with a fun twist of controlling time. Xbox 360 controller works with it and recommend but not required.

Crayon Physics Deluxe – OK
Nothing to write home about. Just a physics based game where you trace shit out.

Darwina – Good
A fun and different RTS. You shoot these virus that drop off souls that can be picked up that will then be converted to people that need to be lead to an area. Lots of fun. Very retro looking. Think of Tron

Everyday Shooter – OK
Kind of hard twin stick shooter. Like Geometry Wars but with music.

Gish – Bad
Older game, but doesn’t matter, it hasn’t aged well. Basic platformer where you are a ball of tar.

Mr. Robot – Bad
Controls sucks, they are kind of jerky. Graphics looks amazing but that doesn’t help on a boring game.

The Path – OK
A different take on Little Red Riding Hood. Adventure game where you have to find shit. It is heavily indie. No map so you can easily get lost. Finding shit is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Not fun

World of Goo – Good if not Great
Ok, one great game is ok. This game is a fun puzzle game. You build shit to get to one end of the map but you have build the structures as efficiently as possible. Fun game. Sadly, heavily pirated.

Over all, I think the 10 pack version is the best.

World Of Goo (ODE): Min absoluta favorit. World Of Goo utspelas på sagovärldsplaneten Goo, bebodd av boll-liknande varelser kallade Goo balls.

I first heard about this game back in January on an NPR newscast, and the description of the game made me go out and download it immediately. Go out and check it out…while it looks like it would be way easier to play this game with a tablet, I had no real issues using a mouse (other than the fact that I can’t draw with a pencil, let alone a mouse.)

Have fun!

I was loosely aware of Crayon Physics before Lee persuaded me to buy it. I was in the market for a

I was loosely aware of Crayon Physics before Lee persuaded me to buy it. I was in the market for a new quirky physics based game and the fact that this one utilised a touch screen was just what I was after. There are a number of clones available on the app store, which surely suggests some level of value in the original. So making my first (but not last) impulse app store purchase, I snapped it up. I was pleased to discover that Crayon physics is a intriguing and original little puzzler that is enhanced no end by touch control (a PC version is available) and so it serves as a great answer to the question ‘Have you got any good games on it?’.

The game is object is the same as that of Splitter – get a ball to the end point (in this case a crayon star) using your wits, physics and a lot of trial and error. Philosophically, it’s the anti-splitter because rather than reaching the goal by destroying objects, in Crayon Physics you reach it by creating them. Draw on the screen with your finger to spawn that shape where you draw it. At first this consists of drawing a simple line to bridge gaps, it later evolves into creating wedges, weights, pivot points for swinging clubs to give the ball more momentum and ease it on it’s way. Drawing with your finger is actually surprisingly accurate, so there are rarely catastrophic mistakes, though the double tapping a created object to remove it can be a little more pernickety.

When a level works well this sensation of creative, problem-solving freedom feels incredibly satisfying as you bask in the warm internal glow of your own ingenuity. Unfortunately, while the physics and physicality of the newly created objects works surprisingly well, if you think about how tricky that might be to program, many levels can be solved ‘badly’. For example, shapes drawn on top of pre existing things tend to ‘snap’ into the nearest free space and this can mean that with some perseverance you can free a caught ball by drawing loads of triangles directly underneath in the hopes that the ball is, by chance knocked into the right space. The result is a distinctly graceless resolution to the problem. And that would be fine – I’m all for the freedom to solve puzzles in ways that the designers did not intend – but as in most puzzle games, at least the first half of the levels are spending times teaching us new concepts. So if it is possible to be stumped, then finish a level in another way, you may well be missing out on fully grasping a game concept that will become very important later. It’s not totally game-breaking, it’s pretty unavoidable and I did find that showing the game to others and watching them play often taught me what I had missed with my ‘uber-lateral’/cheating play-style, which allowed me to progress in my game.

The aesthetic and music are lovely. Neither are going to be winning any awards but they really create a sense of serenity and complement one another and the concept as a whole. The level lengths are appropriate for a mobile game, although the load times can be tiresome.
I’m glad I bought it and it was a very strong GotW. I like having it on my phone and I still pick it up from time to time. It scores slightly less highly than Splitter because of the issues of neatness and elegance – which I think are crucial to nail for in success in the genre. It may also have scored higher in my eyes had it been free, but nonetheless a great idea, well executed.

Crayon Physics Deluxe is a game that has more in common with some of the most violent videogames than it does with drawing on construction paper. Crayon Physics Deluxe is all about the sandbox environment, like Grand Theft Auto. The game is based around one simple premise: get the apple to roll into the star. There is always an easy way to accomplish this goal, but successfully completing the goal isn’t where the fun is. The fun comes from using the nearly limitless tools to solve your problem; a way that is interesting in and of itself.

Sure, you can just draw a straight line and get to the goal by clicking the apple. It’s more interesting when you draw a giant man who kicks the apple into a box that gets dragged accross a tightrope.

The main game shouldn’t take too long to complete, but great for short burts of beating a couple dozen levels here or there. The built in map editor allows for the saving of new maps to be shared in the community as PNG files. While the game is infinitely more fun using a Tablet PC or Wacom tablet, the mouse controls are both accessible and fun. The graphics are crayon drawings brought to life with a physics engine and are a joy to watch. The music is soothing, but can get a little repetitious.

Crayon Physics Deluxe is a great example of an Independent Game. Cheaply priced at $20, great desgin and tools, universal appeal, with an art style that catches the eye. I’d recommend trying the free trial of CPD here.

This is my first attempt at playing Crayon Physics Deluxe. WINE runs it quite nicely, and despite the requirements being the latest and greatest video card with tons of RAM (OK, only 64MB of video RAM) my little cheap 16MB Intel Integraeted i915 graphics chipset survived quite nicely. Even the music played without a stutter, for the most part, despite my old 1.8GHz P4.

Try this great game, one and all, you computers young and old!

“Crayon Physics,” a child’s imaginative canvas has got its sequel..

The major emphasis of Crayon Physics Deluxe is on simplicity..

“Crayon Physics Deluxe” builds upon its predecessor with several new features, including pins that can be used to anchor swinging hammers and other items, and ropes for pulling objects.

The original “Crayon Physics” did create a lot of curiosity in the game circle. The amazing thing is the ease and quick time frame in which the Finnish computer science student Petri Purho created the Crayon Physics.

NPR recently aired a story about a new computer game that is fun and challenging for players aged 6

NPR recently aired a story about a new computer game that is fun and challenging for players aged 6 to 106. The game is also a lesson in physics. Called Crayon Physics Deluxe, players of the game start by drawing a box that when completed will drop and hit a ball, which starts rolling and bumping into things, and the game begins. The player earns points by knocking the ball into stars, and the challenges quickly become more complex and involve drawing ramps, balls, and other science tools. The animation of the game looks hand-drawn, as if a child drew it.

Developed by Petri Purho (that’s his name, not the company name) in Finland, the game was originally meant to be a challenge to develop a creative concept game as quickly as possible. Although it took Purho over a year and a half to create it and get it to market, he did win the Independent Games Festival grand prize for 2008, so it was definitely worth his time.

Purho told NPR that he is happy with the game, even if his mother complained it looked like a 5-year-old made it. Purho says that making it look childish was his whole point; the inspiration for this game came from the famous children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” in which 4-year-old Harold literally creates his world around him by drawing it with his crayon. In fact, in the video preview you will notice the cursor leading the action is a purple crayon.

You can download a demo of the game and/or buy it off of Purho’s website, which is in English. According to the comments and NPR interview it is a very addictive game, so you’ve been warned.

NPR doesn’t usually interfere with my art making. but tonight, i’m blaming Melissa Block for curtailing today’s studio session. her interview with Petri Purho sent me almost immediately to my computer.

Purho, a 25-year-old independent games designer from Finland has released for sale this week what i’m predicting will be the biggest time-eater i’ve encountered in a good long while. it’s a computer game called “Crayon Physics Deluxe”. the object of the game is to find a way to send a little red ball rolling or flying or bouncing into a golden star. you do this by drawing objects that are then animated and behave according to the laws of physics. you’re presented with ever more complex problems that you must solve with the aid of a crayon and your imagination. the game was inspired by Crockett Johnson’s children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” in which Harold, armed with a purple crayon, draws himself an adventure that comes to life.

the game is downloadable for only $19.95. oh, and i forgot to mention, it won the 2008 Independent Games Festival grand prize. not convinced you want it? you can start by downloading a free demo.

here’s a vid to make up for my poor explanation.
