Down in a basement, on the 23rd of April 2012, “Hello Possums” She, He or It? Cooed. Yes it’s none other than our National Treasure, The Late? Dame Edna. It seems even “giga stars” such as Dame Edna herself have an expiration date and Barry Humphries has laid its due. Yet, her (I’m going with that) comedic value was not lost on the crowd, as some 60-70 guests held their bladders in launch of her farewell tour, “Eat, Pray and Laugh”.

Nestled in the lower basement of the Civic Underground, Dame Edna Everage dug her own grave…Literally.

Referring to one guest, Jenny, as “coloured people”, or openly reprimanding press on texting during her comedic delivery as, “bad mannered” and “common looking”… She was on fire! Even suggesting she could execute a gay marriage on stage!

And offering the lucky couple a hotel next door that charges by the hour (simply GOLD!). You know it’s the end when your entertaining in the basement of a hotel on the corner of Goulburn and Pitt St (Sorry Edna!).

But despite the sadness of the occassion, Dame Edna Still had plenty to grin about. It’s not that she’s raking in “twice as much money” since dubbing it her last tour (as she put it), nooooo definately not!? It’s the new significate other in her life since the passing of her husband…A woman named Jenny Craig.

Ok, so Dame Edna is not becoming a Lesbian, although the gay community would love that! She is instead taking the Mel B challenge to shed 15kgs before her international farewell tour.

The Battle of the Bulge... And the winner is Mel B!

Concerned after a critic in London called her “tubby”, Dame Edna is turning to the only woman with a proven system to beat the Battle of the Bulge, Jenny. The proof is in the pudding… or is it the lack there of? When Mel B came on stage as living proof of the effectiveness of the program, showcasing a trim, taught and terrific body.

So in true politically incorrect Dame Edna style, “Don’t forget if you’re fat, you’re sick”. Join Dame Edna’s plight with Jenny’s ‘Edna Forever’ campaign (or in her case limit the flow of frocks on eBay).

Then the view hits you. Sobriety. This is anything but your average mine. The perfect mix of ruins, mechanical contraptions and still operating vintage trains – I can see this as the ultimate wedding backdrop for the adventurous.

Sitting next to a mini heater, Leah Moate from Willow Tree Creative Services unveiled my outfit, corsetry and SteamPunk from Gallery Serpentine – yep, now I get they steamy aspect to the shoot LOL.

In the smelting room, Angie set the scene. If I could actually smelt metal looking like this and somehow not set myself on fire – I think the metal industry would be booming for an entirely different reason *grins.

Nikita Sernack and Brooke Coleman created the label “Nookie Beach” by compiling both there names in a light, playful manner. Yet, someone should have seriously handed the now sole contributor, Nikita, the urban dictionary, for bikinis cut like this, using striking metallic and unique prints for Spring/Summer 2012… people will be practicing a whole different type of “Nookie“.

Featuring origami style paneling and bold contrasting colours at RAFW, it’s hard not to be drawn into a trance of metallic proportions.

Showcasing draping, floor length slips, this season, casual beach wear will be singed out of existence. The collection is really hard to pin to one particular genre, but elements of japanese origami, tribal tones/drapes and lastly roman influences can definitely be traced.

But not to feel left out, even men will have a signature piece of biblical fashion in 2012. Sporting a long draping take on the harem pant, male models proved drape and voluminous material can still be masculine.

Overall, a really strong collection by Nookie Beach, one that will definitely have men and women after some afternoon delight in the warmer months…especially if I have anything to say about it.

“She is passionate about life and making a difference to her world and the environment that we live in.” Clearly, this season the brand identity of Miss Unkon has been carried through quite literally, with the creative team enlisting Pocahontas as their Spring/Summer 2012 inspiration.

True to Walt Disney’s vision, designer Courtney Meyer, opted for an earthy palate of soft chiffon yellow, desert sand, tea rose and lilac. It is an infusion best described as a textured light weave with a youthful drape.

Key signatures of the Spring/ Summer 2012 collection are the high waist bands, ties and ample mid-drift accentuated by triangular detailing whether it be through cut-outs, pleating or darting in the garments construction.

The garments in themselves are very playful, fresh and promote an alluring female silhouette without the need to expose the chest or tug at the thighs. If anything I would comment that this collection would work well not only for the slimmer figure but also for the fuller figured woman.

Just Like in Walt Disney’s story where Pocahontas brings provisions to the starving colonists, so too does Miss Unkon bring food to the starved eyes of Australian Summer Fashion – desperate for something more than just torn short-shorts and cropped bras.

The red-head you see today was born, one upon a time, when a sheepish, dirty-blonde with long ratty hair walked into the Mieka salon to get a Scene Model make-over.

I didn’t realise then – as I do now – that I would become a Redhead Bob and pandora’s box of Polish/ Russian fire would come smoking out.

So in honour of our collaborative works, resident colourist, Olivia Zynevych, decided to make RED…the NEW RED once more.

Entering into the category of “COLOUR TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR“, Olivia had to create a “beautiful, well executed color result suitable for an avant garde woman with a cut to complement the overall look”.

Well naturally, Tracey Hughes took care of the cut with one of her famous graduated bobs. Too few people attempt this cut due to sheer fear, oddly enough Tracey has DVDs available that literally explain the Bob like a first grade cutting class.

And then…Olivia took her rightful platform, picked up her brush and painted me RED.

A 20-strong panel of independent industry experts from both Australia and New Zealand will spend two full days scrutinising over 150 entries to reach the finalist selection.

The judges want to be able to describe the color as:

Expensive, classy, high shine, fashionable, on-trend, clever
placement, multi-dimensional, bring the cut alive.

I’m no expert, but I think Olivia is a THE “COLOUR TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR” in her own right. Why not see for yourself…

Born on the 23rd of April, 20 years ago, a boy named Travis Burns blazed into existence. Like his surrogate older sister, your’s truly, he too had a thirst that could not be quenched for a precious clear liquid served iced cold.

Travis, the rising face of American crew and budding photographer, took a stroll in the cross to intercept a vodka revolution … of redhead proportions.

So naturally, with a burning desire for fun and a redheads flare for dancing debauchery, Travis, celebrated his 20th Birthday.

His designated cavalry for the task at hand? Liam Thomas – alcoholic wing man and dancing detonator, femme fatal Isabelle Lindblom…and lastly the vodka kamikaze Miss Kasia Stelmach herself.

First stop the local Celebrations Bottle shop, contents: none other than a case of Belvedere vodka – off course – and Three Kings Vodka and Ginger tonics. You don’t start a 3 night bender lightly – you go hard or go home in a pile of ash.

Next fatal ingredient? Ripping tunes on virtual mixing decks – my neighbours never stood a chance. Tearing through old school house, trance and the latest shit to hit the market, good old Travy made hips move to a delicious beat… 8 hrs straight.

The boy has talent and a few of his shimmying moves later & tickling the femme fatal until she self combusted, the night to morning ended… Oh and don’t forget the vodka/ hydrolite shots (gotta prevent that next morning hangover – we have a mission to complete).

So, Saturday arrived. After fighting over who would keep my epic couch (not like I was ever gonna cough it up anyway!?) The mega club hop began.

First stop – Backroom (the new Lady Lux): Welcomed by the Best host, the one and only queen minx, Natalie Prentice and her sexy tigress Courtney Hoolahan, the boys were taken away to a coconut oasis. Old school RnB with pop remixes intoxicated the senses and rhythm took on a whole new meaning…ok, maybe for Liam.

Next, The Ivy Pool Room: If you’re a Melbournite this is one venue you MUST visit. It’s not everyday there’s a whooping big pool in the centre of the club. A few drinks here (much to the dismay of Trav when they had no clue what a skittle bomb was) and we needed another intense musical fix.

The main Ivy Club beckoned us revolutionaries. A zoolander walk off  later and the Travinator was served a skittle bomb from bar guru Aaron Williams. Feeling severley out numbered 1 girl to about 10 guys – despite experiencing musical sex from the featured Disc Jokey of the night- I snapped, NEXT, so we moved on.

Beach Haus… You can’t refuse entry when a smiling Emily Ockenden welcomes you through a 1 year old door. Here Travis showed us how a man dances with a women… And it was HOT… Listen up men learn how to dance with a women – it will get you, oh so far in life. Liam attempted to break dance, but due to slight wardrobe restrictions we had to leave it for another night.

Now for the most part, the femme fatale has laid dormant… but you don’t call Isabelle Lindblom a femme fatale for no reason at all.  Kit & Kaboodle triggered her assault.

DJ Patrick Stevenson played the puppet master and Isabelle could do little to resist the musical commands he laid down. Twirled left and right by random, bubbly men she weaved swedish prowess till 6am in the morning.

So the crew, highly intoxicated…possibly missing a few limbs… retreated back to the Redhead’s headquarters.

One last final vodka night-cap, licking our wounds, we saluted the reckoning of Travis and a blazing year ahead with a Cross marking the spot.

Burn, Burn, baby burn.

Marion Liese, head designer at Willow Lingerie and founder of her own namesake label, “Marion Liese“, makes the naked form pale in comparison and questions whether you really want to “take it off” or rather just keep it on?

Recently, I had the pleasure of styling her collection, combining the worlds of what we desire to be seen, but too often keep locked away by mountains of enveloping clothing. This shoot was a testament to raw sexuality – not to be confused with your generic, sugar-coated, marketing spun, sexpo-type antics. NO.

This was an ode to the belief that a woman is only as powerful as the lingerie she harnesses underneath. The knowledge, that what she harbours beneath the fine lines of her silhouette contains a power that makes you weak with the possibilities.

So without further a do, I give you a glimpse into an unexposed realm of clothing… Marion Liese.

Not to be confused with just any other amazing party, the night belonged to all us lime light alley cats to support – at least my favorite new venue – begin a new chapter.  Never to be out done, Beach Haus conditioned itself a star studded line-up of celebrity Djs ranging from Nikki Phillips, Danny Clayton, Didier Cohen and Steph Carta. The bar oozed Nudie inspired cocktails, laced with Belvedere vodka to be latter delicately trimmed with natural passionfruit puree. Pure blondes were offered to the more relaxed drinker and canapes floated invitingly throughout the interior palms.

It’s safe to say you can’t embark on such a volatile mix for a Wednesday night without the aid of a partner in crime – my designated wing-woman, Swedish Isabelle Lindbloom. With an alcoholic scape goat (other than me), we donned our tight tigers capes and wreaked havoc on the dance floor. Beach Haus is truly the venue to let your inner dance demon loose. This is THE place to enjoy the company of people, who honestly, just want to have fun. So Beach Haus you may be one year older but with your knew facelift (inspired by the South of France) you have simply become an older french woman most men would like to conquer.

But don’t take my word for it, why not ask the squirrel? Run by the same entrepreneurs responsible for Bondi’s flying squirrel, Owl house is its wiser alter ego specializing in quality wines hand selected by co-owner Amir himself.

And the experience is heightened further with Paul, also a co-owner, personally manning the floor to ensure your visit between realms is as pleasurable as possible. I remember feeling as if I were amongst two men I have known for years, with both Amir and Paul immersing themselves in talk of great food, wines and stories of lives past, present and future and thinking nothing of spending quality time with each patron.

So why not travel to a place where intoxication is a state-of-mind… not a competition.

The ABC is attempting to do what pubs can no longer, provide a platform for local artists, of all backgrounds, the opportunity to build awareness organically. Australian licensing laws – including the 2am curfew – have deprived many local bands an audience. The foreclosure of Melbourne’s music icon, The Tote Hotel pub, is one example still mourned by punters as more and more live music venues are facing similar restrictions from authorities.

Good luck to the remaining music presenters still floating in limbo!

I'm not an alcoholic, I just love the drink.

If you ever thought Hamish and Andy had slap-stick humour down pat, meet Daniel Jacob aka. Jesus and his better half Anthony D’Agata – Daga for short.

Recently setting up residence in Sydney for 7 days, these two vagrants have been draining Sydney’s famous, and well…”famous” waterholes to commemorate Jesus’s 25th birthday.

Kicking off their epic liver abuse (naturally, with this resident redhead as consumption referee), beers were consumed at the 3 Wise Monkeys. Unlike the name suggests, here we spoke, saw and heard plenty of evil, draining our glasses and committing our own crimes against Australian breweries by the cheap prices we paid.

Sufficiently tainted with beer, the duo and I navigated our way to Scubar – not that this was at all hard. Sooner rather than later all foreigners end up here. It’s notorious for its night life, gaining the slogan of THE premium backpackers bar. A very fitting destination for a Greek, Native Indian/Frenchie and a Polak/Ruski collaborating on a united drinking front. Being the resident vodka queen, chilled vodka shots demanded their due with my signature fresh lemon for a side. Slamming 3 down in succession to remind all of my prowess, Jesus upstaged me yet again, inhaling beer after beer. But Scubar doesn’t purely offer a quick alcoholic fix. Showcasing some great local talent, we tore up the D-floor proving we can drink, but man! We know how to have fun!

B*tches in the cah-lub!

Still not content with a drunk’n game of pool, where I, with my shit abilities, happened to for once!!! be highly coordinated…the miniature guitar made it’s debut. Daga, strumming like the Greek version of Jason Mraz and Jesus freestylin – there wasn’t a night tradie in sight who didn’t join in. 2am, two gorgeous Brazilian travellers joined in on the duo’s sing off in the middle of Sydney CBD, proving a brawl isn’t all these streets are good for.

4am we called it a night but, lest I remind you, there were 6 more days to go…my liver groans in memory of it’s ordeal.

Highly dehydrated, these two dedicated waterhole connoisseurs picked up their craft at 1pm, daily, from here on out – respect. Unable to keep up with their pace, I elected to pitch in only at certain venues.

My chosen venue of entertainment debauchery… Why, The Ivy Pool no doubt! Here I managed to seduce Daga, Mr Hood and our L.A visitor Felicia to dive into the pool… fully clothed. Jesus however, didn’t feel he could part the waters. So, naturally, he paid his penalty by electing to be the human towel (by elected I mean sandwiched). It is truly a beautiful venue and deserves it’s accolade of being Sydney’s must try bar. That, and where else do fully grown people throw themselves into a pool?…Whilst wearing designer clothing…

From one ritzy venue – to another priding itself on the lack there of – we announce Sydney’s new “Scruffy Murphys” title holder. Mr Daga himself, with his famous reply to “Mate how much have you had to drink? D: Nowhere near enough, that’s why I’m here”, must officially be the first person to ever be kicked out of the scruffiest joint in Sydney. To you Mr. Daga I say, good luck living that one down! Luckily you’re a Melbournian.

It seems Sydney is a city that offers an amazing time no matter what your style, budget or nationality. Knowing that today was the duo’s last assault on the town, I’d like to thank these two Melbournians for reminding me that happiness is a state of mind. That, and as long as there’s a drink in your hand and two slap-stick gurus in your town you can’t go wrong.
