These cute little plants in a jar seem to be all over people’s minds today for gifts, etc. (especially now that Christmas season is arriving). I had an earlier post about these deliciously wonderful jars of moss :

A défaut de vous montrer le résultat de l’atelier Moline auquel j’ai participé dimanche (autant l’avouer tout de suite, je ne suis pas allée au bout de mon ouvrage), voilà mon fameux projet Chocolat ! Inutile de sortir les casseroles ou de prévoir une cuisson au bain marie pour réaliser ces délicieux chocolats…

Il m’a suffi d’un peu de fil, de feutrine et du mode d’emploi ; vous l’avez compris, ces gourmandises ne sont pas comestibles, elles sont là uniquement pour le plaisir des yeux… Mais on aurait bien envie d’y goûter, non?

Pas besoin d’être particulièrement doué en couture, justement suffisamment minutieux (et patient, mine de rien, ça prend du temps)

Alors, ils sont pas beaux mes chocos? On en mangerait!

Pour réaliser ces petites friandises, voici les patrons et les explications fournis dans le pack DIY (super cadeau en provenance de Sydney, je ne sais pas si on peut le trouver en France). Vous n’y trouverez pas le chocolat blanc, celui-ci est une de mes créations (et j’en suis pas peu fière… il m’en faut peu!).

It started about a couple of weeks ago when invitations to parties started to fill our calendar.  And how can we resist such an offer, especially after a long day of shooting.  Wedding season is over (but there are still TONS to edit) but we are now busy as ever at our studio.  So this past weekend, we had two great back to back sessions at Flash Cube.  The first is a family of 5, with a super hot mom, kids and hubby.  And the second was an ultra-chic and modern business woman.  I will post their pictures sometime this week.  So stay tuned! 

But back to eating, we ended our busy weekend with a delicious meal, food made with love.  And you can only find that kind of food at grandma’s house!    It was a late lunch-early dinner kinda get-together but it lasted from 2:30pm-6:30pm (with lots and lots and lots of wine!)  Mmmmmm….

Une nouvelle création et peut être la dernière de l’année 2009… Et oui le départ approche! Donc ce sera plus difficile de crocheter autant d’écharpes à Hawaii, quoique, je crois avoir vu quelques moutons…!

I have been trying to get organized with my cropping stuff.  When the store closed for the summer I had to take all my stuff home and find a spot for it.  And it wasn’t that easy.  There is stuff in our bedroom, the living room and our hallway.  So I have been trying to condense and control it to just one location.  When the store reopened in our new location I did move some of it back, but there is still a ton left.  One of the biggest things is the 5 years of magazines that I have been collecting.  So I decided to create an idea book.  (one of my customers does this and I always thought it was a great idea)  So I had an old notebook that I wasn’t using  and I began going thru the magazines and removing any idea or technique that I liked or thought I would like to try and then pasted them on the pages of my note-book, before I know it the magazine collection was gone and in the recycle bin and what was left was a great little idea book.  Well one of the ideas was this snowman picture in a black frame.  I believe that they had patterns for the snowman, but you know me and my Quickutz I just couldn’t pass up an oppurtunity to use them.  And this is what I came up with. 

It’s a 12×12 and then I put it in a black frame that I drilled 2 holes in and ran ribbon thru to hang it.  I love it and can’t wait to hang it up and use it.

Mon modèle homme n°2 porte un bonnet en crochet de l’année dernière (je n’en ai plus fait depuis…) et une écharpe assortie en crochet, sans frange de la collection automne/hiver 2009-2010.

Pas très marrant à réaliser, c’est long sans les trous et surtout les couleurs… Du rose, du jaune, du fluo, du chiné mais plus de noir ! Enfin je dis ça sur le moment mais le résultat en vaut la peine, c’est vrai que le noir fait toujours de l’effet.

Et c’est toujours un plaisir de faire un cadeau et de voir une aussi jolie écharpe finie, j’espère qu’elle a fait un heureux ?!

Scrumptious Scraps

Friday’s Favorites (and every day for me) are silk ribbon embroidery projects that include ribbon worked flowers and leaves. This type of work incorporates two different techniques, embroidery with silk ribbon and flower or leaves stitched from ribbon. If you are unfamiliar with these techniques it can be confusing to identify one technique over the other.

In the above image I have used both silk ribbon embroidery and ribbon worked flowers made from silk habotai and silk satin ribbons. The base of this particular piece is composed of precious bits and pieces of lace that are stitched to a base of silk fabric. This base was dyed along with a few of the ribbons. Additional ribbons that I used were the Hanah Silk Ribbons. The silk ribbon embroidery was stitched with 2mm, 4mm, 7mm silk ribbon from YLI.

Marie's Boudoir Pillow

This is pillow is an example of silk ribbon embroidery. The technique is described by threading the ribbon into a needle (chenille) and stitching through the fabric to create the embroidered designs. All of the stitches were stitched with either silk ribbon from YLI which comes in a variety of sizes (here I used 2mm, 4mm, 7mm, and 13mm);  or silk threads which I used buttonhole twist and stranded floss.

Violet Gardens

This brooch is an example of flowers and leaves made from ribbon. These ribbon worked flowers are stitched from different widths of ribbon (1/4″ to 5/8″), in a variety of styles and fiber content. Ribbon work differs from embroidery in the fact that the individually stitched flowers are created by threading a needle with sewing thread, cutting the ribbon the exact length for each flower, then stitching the ribbon to form the flower. Each flower or leaf  then is stitched in place with a needle and thread. These flowers can also be glued onto a project such as a mixed media project like Green Gardens, or stitched onto a ribbon base and made into a necklace or bracelet as in Deco Plumeria and Violas and Peas.

Elizabeth's Garden

This is an example of a brooch that is primarily embroidered with silk ribbon, using traditional stitches such as Lazy Daisy, French Knot and Chain Stitch. Stitches that are primarily used in silk ribbon embroidery are the Japanese Ribbon Stitch and the Woven Rose (which are shown in the top center of the brooch along with a few ribbon work flowers). I have also incorporated a rococo trim around the outer edge of the brooch, and a few ribbon worked flowers and leaves at the top outside portion of the brooch.

Summer Blossoms Purse

This purse is an example of silk ribbon embroidery on an embroidered silk fabric (in the middle) with silk dupioni fabric on the outer edges. One of the wonderful qualities of silk is that it takes the dye so beautifully, and is very vibrant, yet still feminine. The other lovely thing about silk ribbon is that it is so beautiful even the most basic stitches such as Lazy Daisy, Straight Stitch and French Knots.

Silk Gardens Purse

This purse appeared in the March/ April 2007 issue of PieceWork Magazine. I wrote an article on silk fabrics, and this piece was included as a project. Here I have used primarily ribbon worked flowers made from Hanah Silk Ribbons with a few silk ribbon embroidered stitches.

You will do anything…

We made a move last week.  The power was going out at the campground we made home over the last 5 months.  So we packed up and headed off to a place that is open all winter.  The down side?  I can’t have my workroom, no tents.  WHAT???

This can’t be real!

A week till my first big show and no way to finish the work I had started.  Yet one more time I get pushed back just when things start to move along.

To be honest I wanted to throw in the towel, I almost did.  Then I thought about how much this means to me.  How much work I have put in and the hardships that had been over come to get to this point.

A supportive family and some wonderful friends remind me that if there is a will you can find the way.  So now I have most of my supplies in bins stacked outside of our camper.  When I need something I bring it in and return it when I am done.

You can find a way to do it if you really want to.  I may not get as many items done as I would have liked, but I will still be working and building my name.

The only thing that can stop you from reaching your dreams is you.

An Eight-Legged Engineering Genius

In recent years scientists have also been looking very closely at the spider. They are keen to understand how it manufactures spider silk, which is also a composite. True, a broad range of insects produce silk, yet spider silk is special. One of the strongest materials on earth, it “is the stuff that dreams are made of,” said one science writer. Spider silk is so outstanding that a list of its amazing properties would seem unbelievable.

Why do scientists use superlatives when describing spider silk? Besides being five times stronger than steel, it is also highly elastic—a rare combination in materials. Spider silk stretches 30 percent farther than the most elastic nylon. Yet, it does not bounce like a trampoline and so throw the spider’s meal into the air. “On the human scale,” says Science News, “a web resembling a fishing net could catch a passenger plane.”

If we could copy the spider’s chemical wizardry—two species even produce seven varieties of silk—imagine how it could be put to use! In vastly improved seat belts as well as in sutures, artificial ligaments, lightweight lines and cables, and bulletproof fabrics, to name just a few possibilities. Scientists are also trying to understand how the spider makes silk so efficiently—and without the use of toxic chemicals.
