Offers Industry-Wide Opportunity to Expose Every Licensable Image With Licensor Information at Real-Time Point of Encounter; Every Image Credited With Visible Source and Connected for Legitimate Use and/or Purchase

Silicon Valley, CA, Oct. 07, 2009. PicScout, the market leader in worldwide image services, today launched a services platform and a new product that enables client image monetization opportunities across the global landscape of the internet. For the first time, users of web-viewed images will be made immediately aware of images’ rightful owners or licensors and afforded an easy connection with them. PicScout is bringing both users and purveyors of images together online and on-the-fly to contract for legitimate image downloads for authorized usage on or offline.

Though every image by default is copyrighted for use, until now images have not always been visibly credited when viewed online. Equipped with a free PicScout Image Exchange™ add-on, image buyers surfing, searching, stumbling or visiting a particular site are able to identify images indexed by the Image IRC. Seeing a universally used “i” information icon, a user clicking on the icon exposes metadata that identifies the image’s owner or licensor and the connecting links to buy/use the image directly from the licensor.

“We believe that most people are prepared to do the right thing, especially when the right thing is quick and easy to do, as we’ve made possible with ImageExchange. Users of the ImageExchange Firefox add-on will see icons associated with images anywhere online. Thus, PicScout makes sure that every image gets its credit, and makes buying and tracking images simple,” said PicScout CEO Offir Gutelzon.

“If people can find the image they want, see how much it costs, and how to buy it, most people will proceed gladly to connect with buyers and transact with speed and efficiency. PicScout has realized the way for everyone involved, from the creative professional, to the stock agency and photographer, to achieve full satisfaction. We are very excited to introduce our plans to the industry, the internet, and the world and to continue innovating on behalf of our clients.”

While the consensus is that the photo license industry is a $2 billion market, most also agree this estimate represents only a part of the true market size when factoring in all image uses, both legitimate and non-legitimate. By giving credit to every online image and facilitating immediate use and/or purchase, PicScout engenders a much larger and more apparent marketplace.

With today’s announcement unveiling the industry’s opportunity to have every licensable image appear with licensor information, PicScout moves to a Services Platform designed to utilize the company’s proprietary image fingerprinting recognition technology to inform, equip, and deliver a suite of products– the first new product being ImageExchange, which facilitates connections between image owners and image buyers. With the news, PicScout complements a previously established reactive model for non-legitimate usage with a proactive one that enables immediate recognition of licensable images.

According to September 2009 reporting by the LA Times http://tinyurl.com/p9wg9s, Getty Images reports 42,000 examples of copyright infringement per year, and Corbis claims to uncover 70,000 violations annually. PicScout, through its proven and highly scalable fingerprinting image recognition technology, has established that 85 percent of rights-managed images detected on commercial websites are non-legitimate uses. Yet, in 2008 an online survey from KRC Research, undertaken for iStockphoto, revealed that 33 percent of Americans use downloaded digital content, but nearly 30 percent are unaware that permission is required for its use.

Both users and owners of images are often frustrated by an inability to connect online for legitimate use. While most individual images for web use can be bought for $49 or less, according to Daryl Lang of PDNPulse.com, infringement can be costly for unwitting innocents, with fees accruing over time escalating to $1000 or more. While policing the internet for infringement has been necessary to attempt to maintain legitimacy for the industry, it’s not an optimal scenario and begs the PicScout ImageExchange.

In a separate announcement made today – October 7, “PicScout Unveils Services Platform and Suite of Products to Enable Online Image Transactions for Users and Licensors” – the company reveals the technology, platform and products that support the PicScout Online Image Marketplace and new model for online image transactions.

PicScout Image IRC™ Services Platform Equips ImageExchange™ to Identify, Credit and Connect for immediate Legitimate Use of Every Image

Silicon Valley, CA, Oct. 07, 2009. PicScout, the market leader in worldwide image services and enabler of client image monetization activities, today announced a strategic shift from a single source product company to a services company based upon the PicScout Image IRC. Image IRC serves as a fingerprinting index, metadata registry and API connection platform for agencies and image license holders.

The services platform further positions the company to announce the launch of a new product, ImageExchange, which provides the connection between buyers of images and licensors. Specifically, the ImageExchange allows web-viewed images to be identified, credited for use and/or purchase, and routed to the licensor for immediate transaction, launching a ubiquitous connection between buyers and licensors.

As the Image IRC proliferates with images from stock agencies, professional photographers and user generated content (UGC) under Creative Common license (CC license), the platform produces a digital fingerprint of each image for the index and connects the image to a metadata registry that stores vital owner and licensor information. No data or other elements are added to images, rather the fingerprinting technology uniquely identifies the image online and then makes the connection with the metadata registry.

Through an API, PicScout, as well as proprietary and third party solution providers, will offer products that leverage the Image IRC to connect image buyers directly with licensors for use and/or purchase. In fact, any site can expose image credits and information, and facilitate many different ways of monetization by leveraging the PicScout development tools.

ImageExchange, the newest product in today’s announced PicScout Suite of Products, uses the Image IRC services platform. Equipped with free Firefox add-on tool or at a site that leverages the PicScout API, creative professionals, graphic designers, ad agencies’ personnel, corporate communication professionals and other image buyers use ImageExchange to expose an icon associated with every indexed Image IRC image, then see an image’s metadata and they may choose to be connected in one click to the licensor.

As users search for or casually encounter images online, the icon – the international “i” symbol for information – appears in the corner of every participating image. Pointing to the icon, the user reveals the image’s inherent metadata. Metadata can vary per image, but will typically include ownership, license type and a link to purchase and/or use the image or acquire more information.

“With today’s announcements, PicScout embarks on a path to transform image monetization for the industry. The Image IRC services platform leverages our record in proven fingerprinting technology with our ability to provide owner information so that all images get their credit. With credit comes usability, salability and the ability to track image usage. This transforms PicScout from its heritage of image copyright protection, where our ImageTracker product has recaptured more then $50 million dollars for the industry over the last few years, to a proactive model where potentially every time an image appears online, it is a sales and use opportunity for the agency and photographer,” said Amy Love, PicScout VP of Marketing and Business Development. “The new PicScout leverages the Image IRC platform to restore revenue and profitability to image markets where agencies and photographers connect to legitimate image users at the time of experience, and to continue to provide image tracking, as well.”

PicScout is indexing rights managed, rights ready, royalty free images as well as some UGC CC licensed images. The inclusion of these images in the PicScout Image IRC provisions a new imaging economy, and restores revenue and profitability to the image industry.

The ImageExchange add-on will be made available by invitation. Creative professionals wishing to participate in the invitational Beta period will be able to register to request participation at the company’s website beginning October 14, 2009.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Comparison_of_video_services

http://advancingusability.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/owned-legal-terms-of-video-hosting-services-compared/

Real Video for the EbS streaming, and Real Player in (surestream) multi-compression for low definition

MPEG 2 for high definition pictures

MPEG 2 for video on demand (VOD) and vodcasting

MPEG 4 H264 for VOD and vodcasting

Flash Video for preview

Reblog from PDN Pulse, http://www.pdnpulse.com/2009/07/a-big-problem-with-google-images-new-feature.html, 14 July 2009

By Daryl Lang

Last week Google Images added a new feature to its advanced search page that lets users filter images based on usage rights. On the Official Google Blog, engineers said the feature was designed “to help you find images that you can use for free, while respecting the wishes of artists and creators.”

The problem is it doesn’t work.

Google Images wrongly identifies many obviously copyrighted images as free to copy—often because they are incorrectly labeled on Flickr. A casual user could easily be steered into thinking an image is freely available when it isn’t.

Among the copyrighted photos that Google Images returns as being free for commercial reuse:

These are just a few notable photographs we searched for to test the system. No doubt there are others.

How could this happen? Apparently, Google assumes images are copyrighted unless they are identified with a Creative Commons or GNU Free Documentation license, or are labeled as being in the public domain. The system relies on Internet users to properly identify the status of the images they publish. Unfortunately many don’t, particularly on the Yahoo!-owned Flickr site.

Many Flickr users still don’t understand the concept of a Creative Commons license, or don’t care. Some users tag every image in their collection with a Creative Commons attribution license—even images they grabbed from somewhere else. And why wouldn’t they? It’s time-consuming to put a different label on every image, and there are no checks in place to hold users accountable for unauthorized copying or incorrect licensing labels.

Google, for its part, warns users that it has no responsibility for the accuracy of the license information. On a help page, Google says:

“Before reusing content that you’ve found, you should verify that its license is legitimate and check the exact terms of reuse stated in the license. For example, most licenses require that you give credit to the image creator when reusing an image. Google has no way of knowing whether the license is legitimate, so we aren’t making any representation that the content is actually or lawfully licensed.”

In other words, anyone who uses Google Images to find photos for publication without doing further research is taking a huge risk.

Let’s say you’re a blogger. You’ve just returned from a trip to New York City, and you’re writing a post on New York landmarks. You want to illustrate your travel guide with an image — as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. It’s easy to find images of New York online. But you want to make sure that you don’t use images without the permission of their owners, and you can’t afford licensing fees for professional photographers.

Today, we’re launching a feature on Image Search to help you find images that you can use for free, while respecting the wishes of artists and creators. This feature allows you to restrict your Image Search results to images that have been tagged with licenses like Creative Commons, making it easier to discover images from across the web that you can share, use and even modify. Your search will also include works that have been tagged with other licenses, like GNU Free Documentation license, or are in the public domain.

“New York’s Liberty Island – Statue of Liberty and Seagull”, David Paul Ohmer, Flickr

This feature also helps artists who want their images to be discovered and reused across the web — on their own terms. Creative Commons licenses allow artists to specify the ways others may use their work. Artists can license their images for general reuse, or for noncommercial reuse only. They can also decide whether or not to grant people the right to modify or remix their images. Once they’ve chosen to make their work available online under these terms, Google Images helps people start to find and use it.

Shiroi Hane, PicasaWeb

To enable this feature, go to our advanced image search page. Under the “Usage rights” section, you can select the type of license you’d like to search for, such as those marked for reuse or even for commercial reuse with modification. Your results will be restricted to images marked with CC or other licenses. Once you confirm the license of the image and make sure that your use will comply with the terms of the license (such as proper attribution to the image’s owner), you can reuse the image. Some of you may already see these options, and we’ll be rolling this feature out to everyone throughout the day.

“Red squirrel with pronounced winter ear tufts in the Dusseldorf Hofgarten”, Ray Eye, Wikimedia Commons

There’s some fine print, of course. This feature identifies images that are tagged with licenses that authorize reuse. You’ll still have to verify that the licensing information is accurate. We can help you take the first step towards finding these images, but we can’t guarantee that the content we linked to is actually in the public domain, or available under the license.

We believe that we’ve made it easier for people to find images they can use while helping artists who’ve made their images available under these licenses to gain exposure for their work. So try it out, and let us know what you think.

Sto iniziando a ripensarci…

Event Wrap-up: EngageMedia video workshop in Kuala Lumpur

(we are coming to Penang this 21-22 March, contact mien@engagemedia.org for your registration form now!)

From February 7-8 2009, EngageMedia ran a workshop for local video makers in Malaysia on how to effectively distribute video online. Nova from our Indonesian office and Andrew from our Melbourne office joined me two days before the workshop to go over our game plan and make the final preparations.

Held in the ‘Annexe’ in Kuala Lumpur, the 2-day training kicked off on Saturday with 10 participants arriving, all eager to learn. We started out with an ice-breaking game as we knew that not all participants had met before. The participants consisted of media officers from Sisters In Islam – an Islamic feminist organisation, Suaram – a human rights watch group, the Centre for Independent Journalism, Public Media Agency – an organisation helping the Pesticide Action Network with their Rice Film Festival, and three independent filmmakers. Following the introduction, we went through the program schedule to see if the participants had any special learning requests. We also discussed their expectations and found that most participants are very keen to learn how to distribute their videos, but lacked the technological know-how.

We then got the participants to share what memorable videos they had seen online and identify what was memorable about those videos. The aim was to get some ideas about how videos can be viral or be interesting enough for folks to remember, talk about to friends and pass around. Getting into the main part of the training, we talked about putting together a distribution plan, including the objective of the video, the target audience and resources available. We discussed the different avenues of distribution, both offline (like screenings) and online (such as websites and blogs), and the distribution flow of: plan-compress-license-publish-promote. The talk of planning flowed onto a discussion about making an action plan, prior to shooting a video, that involves thinking about the message, the audience, what the audience would do with the information, how they will be moved to action and how they will be able to access and even distribute the video.

Our guest speaker, Fahmi Reza, shared his experience of distributing his film ‘10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka’ http://www.engagemedia.org/Members/fahmireza/videos/10Tahun.mp4/view (10 years before Independence) that has reached cult status among Malaysians. This definitely captured the participants’ attention as they could see a real case study where a well-distributed video had made such a big impact on the audience that they distributed it to their friends too.

Next came the technical stuff, with Nova making cardboard boxes to illustrate the container and codec concepts relating to compression and uploading video. We got participants to install the ‘Handbrake’ software program and begin to rip and compress a sample DVD. Since the sample video was short, it was very fast to see whether it worked. Everyone managed to compress successfully so we moved on to uploading, but we faced some difficulty with the unstable internet connection. We asked the participants to try compressing and uploading their own videos at home later and share the results with us the next day.

Day two of the training began with everyone sharing their compression and uploading experiences from home. The participants then requested to go through Creative Commons and open content licensing again, which Andrew had provided an overview of on day one, as they did not fully understand the concept. Fahmi Reza also brought in his newly bought device that rips and compress video automatically. The device is connected by RCA cable from a TV, DVD or camera to an iPod, thumb drive or external hard disk, and converts video into mp4 or h264 format. It the conversion happened super fast and the device cost just RM400 (around AUD$170). Such a device would be useful for organisations that churn out a lot of video and often need to get it out there fast.

We then taught people how to embed uploaded videos into blogs, social networking sites and video hosting sites like EngageMedia.org and more. We talk more about the importance of promotion and the differences in using proprietary sites like YouTube compared to sites like EngageMedia.org. After lunch, the participants split into interest groups of three and planned out a video distribution strategy around an actual video or campaign. They then presented them to the rest of the group and we provided feedback on each of the plans. This was followed by some free time for everyone to start their plan, install software or troubleshoot their concerns on a one-on-one basis.

To conclude the day we had an evaluation of the workshop, which discovered that participants found the knowledge useful and felt more confident in employing online technology to further their various causes. All in all, the workshop was a success and a great start to a series of video distribution workshops planned for South East Asia.

Acompanhe a música produzida:

In diesem Sinne: Gut Schnitt!
