I just found about Sprixi.  It looks like a new search engine devoted just for finding images that are licensed for friendly use under Creative Commons or in the Public Domain.  It’s so new that random searches create new topics but that’s OK.

I really like the concept for use in the classroom.

The interface looks like so many simple search engines.  You’ve got a box to enter your search terms so you type a term and let Sprixi do its thing.  Unlike simple search engines, though, the results of the search are what are so impressive to me.

As someone who makes elearning materials, runs a blog, creates a monthly newsletter and presents regularly at conferences, I have a constant need for free-to-use images.  A striking image can illustrate a point in a way that is far more memorable than the written word.  I describe the images I use as “free-to-use” because they are almost all cost-free, but most importantly they are used with permission of the creator or copyright owner.

There are an enormous number of free-to-use images available for download on the internet and they generally fall into two broad categories:

• Images licensed under Creative Commons (the creator has chosen to allow their image to be used by applying a special license)

• Images that are in the public domain (the copyright has expired)

Regardless of which image you choose to use, you must check the conditions for use and/or licensing agreement.  In almost all cases you must at least attribute the creator of the image.

So how does one find these striking images?  Here are the search tools I most frequently use:

1. Compfight

The Flickr photo-sharing website is my favourite source of images and it even has a useful Creative Commons category.  However, there are a couple of other search tools that do a more effective job of finding what you need.  The Compfight site allows you to type in a keyword at the top, and limit your search to one of the Creative Commons licenses by choosing a category from the drop-down menu to the right.

2. Behold

Behold is another Flickr search engine which has an added search function.  You can type in a tag – such as “dog” – to bring up all the pictures tagged with dog, but you can also refine your search further by adding a “looks like” category.  Narrowing my search for dogs by adding the looks like “face” category results in close-up pictures of dogs’ faces.  You can also apply one of the Creative Commons license options to your search results.

3. Google Images – advanced search

Google Images is a good way to search the internet for all sorts of images used on websites around the world.  However, in order to refine your search to Creative Commons images, you’l need to use the Advanced Image search function.  Under “Usage rights” near the bottom, choose an option from the drop-down menu – such as “labelled for reuse” before you click on the Google Search button.

4. Pics4Learning

The site contains copyright friendly images especially for teachers and students.

5. PD Photo

PD Photo is a free public domain photo database.  The site also includes a few photos which are not in the public domain, so make sure you check the license that accompanies each photo before you use it.

6.Free Foto

Free Foto is made up of just over 128,000 free images.

7. Photos 8

Photos 8 is a collection of public domain photos & wallpaper.

8. Big Foto

Big Foto mostly contains travel and geography photos by amateur photographers.

9. Everystockphoto

Everystockphoto is a search engine for free photos which come from a wide variety of sources.  The site searches Flickr, Morguefile, Wiki Commons, photoXpress, stock.xchng and others.  It has a useful advanced search function where you can select the source of the photo, the type of license and even shape of image.

Creative Commons for Educators

If you’re an educator and you’d like to know more about Creative Commons, take a look at this excellent Slideshare presentation titled Creative Commons: What Every Educator Needs To Know by Rodd Lucier.

Creative Commons (edaspidi CC) on “mõistliku” autoriõiguse levitamise poolt võitlev mittetulundusühing, mis püüab suurendada tasuta kasutatavate ja vabalt levitatavate loovteoste hulka. Tänapäeval on loovteoste levitamise õigused koondunud käputäie maailma võimsate sisu levitajate kätte, kes kasutavad copyright’i kui monopoli kultuuriloome aheldamiseks. Olgu selleks siis muusika-, filmitööstus või kirjutavad autorid. CC püüab näidata, et on olemas ka alternatiiv. Kultuurilise ühisomandi laiendamise vahendiks on CC litsentsid.

Ajalugu

Creative Commons projekt algatati 2001. aastal USA-s grupi inimeste poolt, kelle hulka kuulusid küberruumi seaduste ja intellektuaalomandi eksperdid Michael Carroll, Molly Shaffer Van Houweling ja Lawrence Lessig, MIT arvutiteaduste professor Hal Abelson, juristsist dokumentaalfilmide režisöör ja küberruumi seaduste ekspert Eric Saltzman, tuntud dokumentaalfilmide režisöör Davis Guggenheim, Jaapani ettevõtja Joi Ito ning koolitaja ja ajakirjanik Esther Wojcicki. Need inimesed moodustasid esialgse mittetulundusühingu Creative Commons juhatuse ning tugeva toetajana on märgitud ka organisatsiooni Center for the Public Domain.

Litsentside areng

Juriidilist “koodi” (Lawrence Lessig’i tabav võrdlus tarvara koodiga) aina täiustades, on jõutud 2006. aastal CC litsentsideni versiooninumbriga 3.0 (täiendustest täpsemalt), muuhulgas ollakse neid ka õigusruumi kaupa täpsustamas (ka Eestis).

Põhilise uuendusena võib välja tuua “ühilduvate litsentside” mõiste. CC pole ainus organisatsioon maailmas, mis on pühendunud vaba kultuuri arengule, ning samuti mitte ka ainuke taoliste litsentside “valvur” (GNU). See punkt käib ennekõike Shared Alike litsentside kohta, mille puhul tuletatud tööd peavad omama sama CC litsentsi (nö “nakkuvad litsentsid”). Versiooniga 3.0 on lubatud ka “sarnased” litsentsid, kuigi artikli kirjutamise aegu (nov 2009) pole veel ühtegi konkreetselt nimetatud.

Versiooniga 3.0 parandati ka ühilduvust GNU/Linux Debiani rahvale pahameelt valmistanud punktides, mille puhul oli probleeme CC-BY ja CC-BY-SA litsentside Debiani Sotsiaalse Kokkuleppe põhjal “vabaks” tunnistamisega.

Creative Commons litsentsi omadused

CC litsentsi defineerivad neli omadust:

• BY – Attribution (omistamine) – Kohustus mainida teose originaalautorit. See omadus on olemas kõigil kuuel allpool välja toodud põhilitsentsil.
• SA – Share Alike – Jaga samadel tingimustel ehk identse litsentsiga, millega originaalteostki.
• NC – Noncommercial – Teosega ei tohi raha teenida.
• ND – No Derivative Works – Teost on keelatud ümber teha või täiendada.

Kuus põhilitsentsi

Kasutades neid omadusi, on defineeritud kuus põhilist litsentsi. Litsentsi nimedes on lühendatult omadused kahetäheliste lühenditena ja kõige ette on liidetud eesliide “CC”.

• CC-BY Attribution – pead mainima ära teose originaalautori, kuid võid teost levitada, mudida, ehitada selle najale oma töö, kasutada kommertsiaalselt. Kõige piirangutevabam CC litsents.

• CC-BY-SA Attribution Share Alike – see on väga sarnane avatud lähtekoodiga tarkvara puhul levinud litsentsiga GPL, sest tööd võib kopeerida, uurida, muuta ja levitada, kuid seda peab tegema sama litsentsiga. GPL on samamoodi “nakkav”. See tegelikult tõstatabki küsimuse, et kas mitte ka GPLi ei võiks kasutada sisulitsentsina, mitte ainult tarkvara litsentsina. (Panen endale TODO edasiseks uurimiseks.)
  CC pole vähemalt 2009. aasta novembrikuus välja kuulutanud ühtki litsentsi, mis otseselt ühilduks mingi CC litsentsi põhimõtetega, kuid üldiste põhimõtete järgi võib siiski sarnaseid litsentse välja tuua.
  CC-BY-SA põhimõtteid järgivad  The Free Art License ja Free Software Foundationi Free Documentation License (FDL).

• CC-BY-ND Attribution No Derivatives

• CC-BY-NC Attribution Non-Commercial

• CC-BY-NC-SA Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike

• CC-BY-NC-ND Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives – see litsents piirab teose kasutamist enim. Seda litsentsi kutsutakse ka „tasuta reklaamiks“, kuna seda võib levitada, kuid ainult muutumatult ja teised ei tohi seda kommertsiaalselt kasutada.

Valik CC litsentside kasutusest

Teoste pealkirja ja autori järel on mainitud ära ka litsents, mille all teos on välja lastud. Olgu allolevad näited tõestuseks, et tegemist pole tühiste teostega, vaid tõsiseltvõetava ja tugevalt soovitatava lugemisega.

• Code 2.0, Lawrence Lessig – CC-BY-SA 2.5 – teos interneti reguleerimisest läbi juriidilise ja tehnoloogilise “koodi” ehk mehhanismide.

Suuremaid projekte

• Wikipedia – CC-BY-SA 3.0 – mitmekeelne vaba võrguentsüklopeedia, mida igaüks võib täiendada.
• OpenLibrary – nende eesmärgiks on luua igale kunagi avaldatud raamatule oma kodulehekülg. Raamatuid on võimalik veebis lugeda ning kuna süsteem on wiki, siis saab ka raamatuid kohendada kohe. Soovitavaks litsensiks on CC.
• Archive.org – interneti arhiiv, mis sisaldab nii tekste, heli- kui ka videomaterjali, tarkvara ja ka veebilehtede arhiivi (Wayback Machine). Ka neil on soovitatavaks litsentsiks CC, kuid autor võib ka oma sõnadega kirjutada, mida ta lubab teha oma teosega.
• OpenCourseWare – MIT poolt 2002. aastal loodud projekt, mis järkjärgult on uusi ülikooli tasemel õppematerjale vabalt kättesaadavaks teinud. MIT-st on asi ka mujale üle maailma levinud.
• Public Library of Science – CC-BY 2.5 – teadusartiklite vabale avaldamisele pühendunud portaal, praegu näib rõhk olevat asetatud bioloogiale, meditsiinile ja geenitehnoloogiale.
• Flickr – kõik 6 CC põhilitsentsi on võimalikud – fotovaramu
• Muusikasalvestusfirma Magnatune – CC-BY-NC-SA 1.0 – Kõik 128kbps mp3-ed on saadaval CC litsentsi alusel.
• WikiTravel – CC-BY-SA 1.0 (plaanitakse üleminekut CC-BY-SA 3.0 peale) – reisi-wiki. Inimeste poolt täiendatud info reisi sihtpunktide kohta. Siin on huvitav ära mainida, et vahepeal prinditakse veebiportaali info põhjal ka füüsilisi koopiaid välja – siis kui kasutaja seda soovib. Tegu on nö on-demand kirjastusega WikiTravel Press (Boing-boingi uudis selle kohta 19.02.2008).
• Open Clip Art Library – CC-BY 2.5 – kasutajate poolt loodud piltide galerii-varamu.

Se avete deciso di intraprendere questo lavoro e siete in Italia, tenetevi forte: sarà un inizio difficile e tortuoso, ma con un po’ di costanza e dedizione (non è un lavoro per tutti) potrete ottenere dei grossi risultati in poco tempo. L’obiettivo del vostro lavoro non deve essere quello di diventare una blogstar (perchè non vi concentrereste sui contenuti vd. qui ) bensì diventare un punto di riferimento nella vostra nicchia d’ascolto. Questo obiettivo deve avere alla base di tutto dei contenuti interessanti, che possono essere generati dopo un periodo di “ascolto” (è importantissimo ascoltare cosa dicono le persone a cui vi state rivolgendo).

Poi devono essere scelti i canali di comunicazione, iniziate con quelli più comuni:

Facebook – Creazione di una pagina di riferimento, pubblicazione dei post, forum e creazione di una community (inoltre, se si trattasse di un blog relativo ad un prodotto o un servizio potreste segnalare il vostro nuovo brand a FacebookCafe )

Twitter – il microblogging è semplice e vi permette di pubblicare via mobile aggiornamenti del vostro stato, ma non solo, vi permette di continuare ad ascoltare i vostri utenti (per maggiori informazioni ho scritto una piccola guida in merito per bloggers ed imprenditori qui)

Slideshare – avete fatto una presentazione? Condividetela qui

Vimeo , Youtube e gli altri video sharing – ricordatevi che state pubblicando qualcosa sulla rete, volete che il vostro messaggio sia raggiunto da moltissime persone? Condividete il video sulle piattaforme di video sharing, facilitando così la condivisione con altri utenti,  se il video è bello avrà un ottimo effetto virale e verrà presto pubblicato su altri blog e socialnetwork.

Flickr – Se state pubblicando delle foto fatelo in modo intelligente, condividetele su flicrk (o altri photos sharing), le immagini come i video occupano spazio, questi servizi le gestiscono per noi catalogandole, effettuando dei backup e offrendoci degli utili tools per la creazione di presentazioni animate e la loro condivisione.

CreativeCommons – Rilasciate tutto sotto licenza creative commons, siamo nel 2009, l’era della condivisione (non si era capito he?) perchè tenervi tutto per voi stessi? Lasciate che altri utenti utilizzino i vostri contenuti (anche lucrandoci) l’importante che citino la fonte, se già lo stanno facendo… siete già un punto di riferimento.

Infine ricordate una cosa: ogni servizio o prodotto ha la propria nicchia d’ascolto, la propria community (e se ancora non c’è, è un ottimo motivo per iniziare a crearne una)., quindi, tutto può essere “bloggato” (restando nei limiti della morale e della decenza). ¿Y si volvieses a casa… y ya no hubiese nadie?
En 1975, el primer cosmonauta ruso en la Luna no consigue regresar, y se le da por perdido en el espacio. Él, sin embargo, a través de fantasmales mensajes de radio, clama haber vuelto a la Tierra y haberla encontrado vacía, sin un alma. Su irreal presencia y su voz irán destruyendo poco a poco el mundo de sus seres queridos.

Este el argumento del proyecto cinematográfico español más innovador del momento, creado por el colectivo Riot Cinema Collective con el objetivo de llevar “la cinematografía a todos los espacios posibles”, explorando el “lado cinematográfico” de todos los campos de la comunicación audiovisual.

La Sala de Actos del Centre de Suport de la UOC en Barcelona acogía el pasado 28 de octubre la presentación de este proyecto.

¿Y qué es lo que lo convierte en tan único e innovador? Básicamente 3 factores:

1. El crowdfunding: El equipo pone a disposición del público una serie de productos de diseño relacionados con la película que quieren producir. Posteriormente cada uno decide con qué cantidad quiere participar en la película y lo que recibe en proporción a esa aportación. Desde dos euros, cualquiera puede convertirse en productor de la película.
2. Contenido Creative Commons: Todos los contenidos de la película estarán licenciados bajo Creative Commons. La película puede ser distribuida, copiada, remezclada o utilizada en su totalidad o parcialmente de manera gratuita. Además, tiene previsto estrenarse en Internet de forma gratuita y en alta definición.
3. Total transparencia informativa y económica.

La película está basada en el poemario de Henry Pierrot, ‘Poética para cosmonautas’ (1956), un libro encontrado prácticamente al azar por los autores del proyecto mientras buscaban alguna “pequeña joya aún no descubierta” sobre astronautas. Así, a finales de 2008 se inicií un proyecto que ha contado con el apoyo de la Agencia Espacial Rusa, la embajada española en Rusia, la Ciudad de las Estrellas, o Joan Fontcuberta, entre muchos otros.

It’s wonderful what Creative Commons makes possible. Randall releases each xkcd under an Attribution-NonCommercial license, freeing NoamR to create this video, which he shared with an Attribution-NonCommerial-ShareAlike license.

So now you and I are free to adapt both, under those simple provisions. How hard is it to attribute, not make money and share?

The second video created by my Mediendesign students here at the HTWK-Leipzig offers an insider’s view of library education. Kudos to them for a job well done. It has a Creative Commons by-nc-nd license, so feel free to embed, reuse, etc. as the license allows.

Wharton’s Icefields

In an seamless blend of mountaineering, history, botany and fiction, Edmonton author Thomas Wharton revisits the shifting social and cultural events that took place on the edge of the Columbia icefields in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1898 while on an expedition in the Columbia (Arcturus) glacier, doctor and amateur botanist Edward Bryne fell through a crevasse where he was held upside down in the icy grip of the narrowing walls of the chasm suspended in a liminal state between reality and dreams.

Using Adobe Photoshop I created this digitage inspired by descriptions and interpretations of the angel in Dr. Bryne’s icy vision. I layered images of ice taken at the Glenmore reservoir in Calgary, a Calypso orchid taken on Heart Mountain in June 2008 and my mother’s portrait from the early 1900s.

The Calypso orchid was elegantly selected as a character in the novel, as the origin of its name signifies concealment. It is a fragile plant with a wide, circumpolar distribution, that requires a highly specific ecosystem. Once it was an edible and medicinal plant for the First Nations who gathered plants in the Rockies but with increased traffic on what were once remote montaine trails, it is now an endangered species. At a certain height on Heart Mountain Trail when the scree became too difficult for me to manage, I was looking for an easier route a bit farther back from the steep edge of the trail when I came across a couple of these tiny purple orchids in a delicate floral embrace.

Nunatak is a word in Inuktitut meaning “lonely peak,” a rock or mountain rising above ice. During Quaternary glaciation in North America, peaks stood above the ice sheet and so became refuge for plant and animal life. Magnificent nunataks, their bases scoured by glaciers, can be seen along the Highwood Pass in the Alberta Rocky Mountains and on Ellesmere Island. The Nunatak fiction series are especially selected works of fiction by new western authors. Editors for Nunataks for NeWest Press are Aritha van Herk and Ruby Wiebe.

Defining Mash-up

A mash-up may refer to video, music, web application hybrid, or digital creations:

A mash-up involves the reuse, or remixing, of works of art, of content, and/or of data for purposes that usually were not intended or even imagined by the original creators.  It is a derivative work consisting of two or more pieces of (generally digital) media conjoined together, such as a video clip with a different soundtrack applied for humorous effect, or a digital map overlaid with user-supplied data.  Mash-ups can be created using different web services or software tools that combine two or more tools to create a whole new service. The term is also used to describe user generated remixes of content from different sources.  Mash-ups combine elements from many potential sources, and in the process, open up both creative and legal frontiers that educators and students need to increasingly negotiate.

The creative potential of mash-ups is astounding.  Educators must understand the reality of copyright and privacy issues, which may have an impact on what they can create, or have students create.  That being said, there is an increasingly enormous amount of material freely available to creators of mash-ups.  One such resource is the Creative Commons, a nonprofit organization that increases sharing and improves collaboration.  The Creative Commons provides free, easy-to-use legal tools that give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work.  By searching the Creative Commons, people can find licensed works that can be shared, remixed or reused without penalty.  In the domain of Education, there is the Open Educational Resources Commons.

Great examples of mash-ups exist at Open Source Cinema, where you create your own videos online, remix media that you have on your computer, as well as remix other people’s media from places like YouTube and Flickr. You can also connect with others by sending personal messages, commenting on remixes, or even joining projects that others have created.
