When all else fails, and the world looks bleak, there will always by the euphoric joy of music. I’d like to introduce you to a band I’m proud to introduce, with the eye-brow raising call name: Aunt Martha.

Aunt Martha’s fresh album “Candymaker” conjures images of the simple, blissful life you wish you were living thirty years ago in the rolling bluegrass hills of Kentucky or on your way west traveling the long winding road of Route 66. The influences of country legend Johnny Cash, Wilco and The Band have permeated Aunt Martha’s indie-folk stylings to create an album that’s as soulful as it is clever.

The album is a lesson in US geography, with stories from Carolina, Detroit and references to Los Angeles. Us well-traveled folks are grateful for the shout outs to a life we knew before moving to New York. And the rest of us are romantically thinking of the great landscape past our driveways.

The driving rhythms of the guitars in “Detroit City” and “Flood” call you to find a partner for two-steppin’ on the dance floor. “Ojos Ojos Ojos” will have you shaking your skinny shoulders to the folk-ified hip hop beat.

These Brooklyn boys contend with the disappointment of the girl who’s taken, leaving a broken city, and the heartbreak of unrequited and indecisive love. We couldn’t ask for anything more telling of our generation. Yet the simple indie-country melodies give us enough distance to pretend like we’re listening to someone else’s story.

The unpretentious harmonies and poppy chorus’ in “Neighbor Song” and “No Excuses” will have you humming along by the second chorus. If you happen to live in the NYC area, you must see them live for the most ravishing remake of “California Love” you’ve ever imagined.

At your nearest chance, invest in this album and emerging band, fill up your gas tank and hit the road. Two hundred miles later you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this sooner.

Saw the video one month ago and this is potentially the largest Flash Mob Dance executed in Singapore. I still like the original mob dance done by Belgium though. The dance and song are both heavenly to drive your blues away.

In Belgium, people are laughing with them but in local are the Singaporeans laughing at them? Hard to decide. =)

In our Professional Practice class we were asked to produce some form of manifesto. I did not fancy making a very rigid manifesto, nor just a list of words that help me generate ideas – because that is a different type of list. I also don’t like phrases that are like “be happy” or “turn a frown upside down”. It’s too broad and annoying to the mind. So my manifesto is kind of short.

These images above are small designed versions of my manifesto to place into my moleskin, to keep reminding me. I really enjoyed creating these little pages, as it gives me a chance to do what I used to really enjoy doing. Mouldng images together to create interesting textures and images. So these will be printed out and placed into my moleskin at some point.

While the majority of photographers today are engaged in documentary photography with catchy themes (sexuality, violence etc), your projects always focused on street and lights photography. Where does your interest in these themes come from?

I am fascinated by the power of unconsciousness of town when looking down from a little higher point. The town is constructed by necessity in fact, not for the purpose of beauty, but I find it transforms beautiful shape and rhythm of which we are not aware when on the ground. I see colors in twilight, that are mixture of artificial light and natural light, emphasize the beauty of town.

Can you write to us about your project Twilight Zone? Where were the pictures taken? How did you manage to get such panoramic pictures? How do you find your locations? Are they building terraces? How do you get permission to have access to them? Do you work the whole night?

Pictures were taken by a large format camera (4×5-inch) at the area of mixture of residential compound with commercial neighborhood in Tokyo. I take pictures from emergency staircase of office buildings or apartment houses. Photographs are made not from the top of the buildings, but from the halfway height such as on the 14th floor degree from the 10th floor. I find the places by location hunting in the daytime. I don’t get permission to go up the emergency staircases. I work in twilight. The beautiful time that artificial light and natural light are mixed is very short. That is about only 15 minutes. So, I can take only 3 or 4 shoots a day.

Your technique: How do you usually work (with digital camera or with an analogical one?). Do you “manipulate digitally” the result?

The most important thing to tell you is that I make my photographs with a large format camera (4×5-inch) by color negative film. Exposure time is from 2 to 8 minutes. I print color photographs by myself.  It takes more than one day for me to finish printing. I do not manipulate digitally the result at all. It is interesting that finished analog works appear to be digitally made.

This is one the most creative and to the point logos I’ve seen online lately and wanted to give kudos to the designers who created it! Great job!
