კიდევ ერთი სიახლე რომელიც გამოქვეყნდა ჯგუფ Crematory –ის ოფიციალურ ვებ გვერდზე. სანამ სიახლეს ვიტყვი მცირე შესავალი. ეს არის გერმანული Industrial/Gothic Metal ჯგუფი დაახლოებით ამ ფარგლებში მოვაქცევ მათ სტილს, რომელიც შეიქმნა 1992 წელს. საკმაოდ სასიამოვნოდ მოსასმენი ჯგუფია და ამიტომაც ხვდება ჩემს ბლოგზე. ბოლო ალბომი, რომელიც მართლაც უძლიერესი იყო გამოვიდა 2008 წელს სახელწოდებით Pray. რაც შეეხება სიახლეს: ჯგუფი 2010 წლის თებერვალში გამოუშვებს მორიგ ახალ ალბომს სახელწოდებით “Infinity”. როგორც ცნობილია ჯგუფში იქნება ორი გერმანულენოვანი სიმღერა და ქოვერი Depeche Mode’s –ს სიმღერაზე “Black Celebration”. და ასევე 2010 წელს ჯგუფი გამოუშვებს DVD–ს შექმნიდან 20 წლის აღსანიშნავად. და რაც მთავარია კიდევ ბოლო ვიდეო უკვე შესაძლებელია ყველამ იხილოს ინტერნეტში სიმღერა კი 2008 წლის ალბომიდან ყველამ კარგად ვიცით “Left The Ground”

As the saying goes, there’s nothing certain except death and taxes. The truth is that you might escape the latter but never the former. So when you finally shuffle off the mortal coil, buy the farm, sleep with the fishes, or kick the bucket, the only thing left is for someone to work out what to do with your remains.

One option is to consign yourself to the flames and be cremated. The word cremation comes from the Latin cremare, which means to consume by fire, and more specifically to reduce a corpse to ashes. It’s not recommended to do this yourself at home because folks in general seem to frown on discovering their neighbor having a large bonfire simply to get rid of their dearly departed.

So, that’s why people use a crematory or crematorium. The first part of the word clearly comes from the aforementioned cremare, but the second is the Latin suffix, -orium, which means “a place for.” Literally, it’s a place for burning.

Crematory

As a noun, the OED defines a crematory as “A place or establishment for cremation; spec. an erection for the incineration of corpses.” In an 1876 edition of the Fortnightly Review, Lionel Tollemache wrote, “The aspect of death might be a little softened, if cemeteries gave place to crematories.” And the Times newspaper of 1885 printed that “Yesterday morning, the crematory erected at St. John’s, Woking, Surrey, as made use of for the first time.”

The -ory suffix for crematory means “place for,” as in dormitory (place for sleeping), lavatory (place for washing), and armory (place for keeping arms). It can also appear as -orium, hence the alternative word crematorium. The difference is that -orium is older than -ory: The -ory suffix came by way of the Anglo-Norman French suffix -ori, which went on to be written as “-ori” and “-ory.”

Phew! Complicated, eh? This also happened with lavatory and lavatorium, the latter being used in a very restricted sense to refer to the wash places of old monasteries and castles. Gloucester Cathedral in the UK has a noted lavatorium that is in excellent condition.

Oh, and in the spirit of pouring cold water on an otherwise exciting example of the use of -orium as a suffix; the Roman vomitorium was not a place to go and throw up during a meal but a passageway in a theater through which people moved. It derives from the Latin vomere, which means “to discharge” with the -orium suffix creating the meaning of  “place of discharge.” Sadly, the only thing discharging were people, not puke.

Sometimes, an etymologist can be a real spoilsport.

I don’t know about you, but the practice of cremation has always been somewhat chilling to me, probably due to the fact that my only experience with it, until Sunset Hill Crematory, was my visit to Mauthausen, a Nazi Concentration Camp in Austria.

It is difficult for me to put into words how I felt upon entrance to the crematorium at Mauthausen – it was absolutely one of the heaviest, most emotional, and heart-wrenching experiences I’ve ever had.  And after walking through a room with a brick oven that held thousands of innocent victims’ horrific fates, the thought of cremation terrified me.

So when I was invited to check out the on-site crematorium at Sunset Hill, I wasn’t so sure it was something I wanted to do.  But on a tour of the facility, I somehow found myself inside the doors of, you guessed it, the crematorium.

I had anticipated feeling the way I had felt at Mauthausen, but it was so different at Sunset Hill.  Bob made me feel very comfortable, making sure to emphasize that cremation is not always a scary thing, and instead, is just another way to help families in need.

He explained the step-by-step process of a cremation while showing the different machines used along the way, which is actually quite fascinating…

First come the toe tags.  Each body is marked with a number, engraved into a metal circle that can’t be damaged during cremation.  Oh and don’t worry, Bob made sure to give me my very own toe tag that is now secured to my key chain.  Score!

The casket or container is first placed in the cremation chamber – and yes, the loved one is always in a container – it’s not only a more compassionate gesture, but also a health precaution.

And yes, only one body can be in the chamber at a time –not only to make sure the right ashes are going to the right families, but it’s also the law.

Families are invited to “push the start button” if they so please, otherwise the staff member cranks up the heat to more than 1400 degrees Fahrenheit for a couple of hours until all organic matter is consumed by heat or evaporation.

In addition to the ashes, the cremated remains, which are surprisingly actual bones that couldn’t be burned down, are processed into ash-like particles in a pulverizer.

When all is said and done, the families can do whatever they prefer with the remains, from spreading them upon a body of water to preserving them in an urn, and from burying the remains to processing them into jewelry.

When it comes to cremation, you want your loved one to get the best treatment in facility that isn’t far away from home.  Sunset Hill is part of a very small percentage of cremation service providers with their own on-site crematorium.

Just another fact that proves that all funeral homes are not created equal.  They might all have coroners, caskets, and cadavers, but many are missing one very hot commodity.  Emphasis on HOT.

One strategy folks have been following to come in under the average cost of a funeral is to skip the funeral home and go right to the crematory. Money wise people who find themselves faced with a funeral are choosing cremation. But some are taking it further, letting go of the funeral home altogether and going right to the cremation site.

One Clergyman had a discussion with a funeral director in this:

“Having asked why there seemed to have been so few funerals in the period since Christmas (genuinely, because it seems to have been unusually quiet), I was told that not least because of the current economic circumstances, people were by-passing Funeral Directors and Clergy and taking their relatives directly to the crematorium to keep costs down.”

This is a significant low cost funeral tool. Skip the funeral home and go to the crematory.

Watch out however for a funeral home that has a crematory. Remember the processing cost for a cremation is $400.00 USD in the USA. The funeral home is entitled to make money on their services.
