I am taking a break from packing and fuming (in a very nice way) because my friends won’t send me any pictures of my house and barn and the apartment over the barn. I think they want to see my jaw drop. I am in Utah and we will be going to Oklahoma around Thanksgiving. My friend the computer genius who sends the photos has been traveling for work for over a month and hence, no pictures for me

Henry, the contractor has been photographing everything but sending pictures is not his thing. I hear little snippets when I ask specific questions, but that is all. Once the trailer is loaded we’re hitting the road and we’ll see everything for ourselves. Until then, the suspense is killing me.

So, if you are wondering why I have not put any pictures on the internet, there is the answer.

In other news, nothing from Betty yet. She was due yesterday.

So here are photos of our three multis to amuse you while we pull our hair out.

Fox Run Suri Alpacas took Caramel Sundae to many shows and her awards are legion.

One of the things I’ll be working on once we get to Oklahoma is photographing our black alpacas, especially the true black girls. Does anyone know a secret for capturing the beautiful locks without turning them brown?

We have some stunning true blacks like Jezebel.

We are very proud of our black suris and we are not the only people who appreciate their elegance. Check them out on openherd.com along with our other alpacas.

Our Demelza is our darling, born only two days after we purchased her mother. She is a spunky girl, absolutely full of herself. She has trained us to do many tricks, like giving her an extra portion of grain.

After several months of taking care of our 3 fiber (non breeding) females we felt we were ready for

After several months of taking care of our 3 fiber (non breeding) females we felt we were ready for a breeding female. We had our hearts set on Carmelita with her ET-Whoville looks and superior lineage. She was pregnant when we purchased her and within several weeks of having her cria, so we took our mentor’s advice (Lynn and Jim Roy of Klamath River Alpacas) and waited until after the birth to move her.

We got the call in early June that our cria had been born and Carmelita had a smooth labor and delivery. We could hardly wait to see the new baby girl! We went to the ranch and met her and decided she looked like topaz. We name our crias after rocks, so Topaz it was!

We were very happy to have a female since we had no males at the time and it would simplify things to not have to figure out what to do with a male in 6 months when it was weaning time. It was a long 3 months while we waited for Carmelita to recover from the birth and then get bred again. It sounds crazy, but alpacas seem to enjoy being pregnant. Within 2 weeks or so of Topaz’s birth, Carmie was flirting and ready for breeding. We had a “breed back” coming since we just purchased her, so we chose the amazing Seiad to do the honors. Seiad is a beautiful, regal, rose gray male and is an experienced herdsire, so the job got done fairly quickly.

Finally the day came for Topaz to come home. She and Carmelita fit right in and they adjusted to the move easily. Carmelita and our fiber females were from Lynn and Jim’s ranch so they already knew each other. Topaz was a very active cria. The first morning after her arrival I was lying in bed about ready to get up when I heard a BANG! Topaz had broken out of the night-time paddock and was running free. The ranch is fully fenced but we still wanted to get her back in as soon as possible. Now this was totally unexpected because we had always heard that alpacas do not challenge fences. Well evidently, Topaz was absent the day they covered that because she continued on with her “don’t fence me in” attitude. While Topaz ran free the “Aunties” and Carmelita stood in the paddock watching her without even attempting to take the opportunity to escape the enclosure. We got Topaz back in and reattached the fence. That was the first time she fought with a fence and won. She has been successful in a couple of other attempts as well. She would go on a run about almost every evening when it was time to go from the daytime pasture to the night paddock. She is not doing that quite so much any more and is growing into a beautiful, yet still independent yearling. We look forward to breeding her next year and will expect her first cria in spring of 2011.

Thisbe keeps an eye out for mom, Aria

At four months old, Thisbe was a strapping 71 lbs. I had resolved to wean her as early as possible after watching her dam, Aria, drop fifteen pounds underweight despite my best efforts. However, with a busy show season coming up, I decided to let Thisbe go a bit longer until I was permanently at home for winter. This decision was made easier when Aria regained ten pounds after Thisbe started to demand less of her in month four. Thisbe had always been a precocious eater, stealing pellets from dams’ bowls at just a few weeks old and attacking the hay feeder as vigorously as any adult in her second month of age.

Weaning is one of those processes that vary widely from breeder to breeder. And a process it is. I have my own guidelines that work for me but even these I don’t adhere to religiously. Each cria is different and I adjust depending on how advanced they are physically and mentally. My general guidelines are:

1. Allow two weeks for the weaning process before dam and cria are separated permanently
2. Allow the cria to reach 6 months of age or 70 lbs, whichever comes first as long as the cria is at least four months of age. Wean a cria at a minimum weight of 60 lbs.
3. Ensure the cria is eating hay and pellets on their own before weaning
4. Consider the body condition of the dam in timing the start of weaning
5. Consider the mental readiness of the cria in timing the start of weaning
6. Weigh the cria often during weaning

Finishing the show season with the ABR Fall Fest last week, I turned to weaning Thisbe, now 80 lbs at almost five and a half months old. Her body condition was solid, neither thin nor fat. I felt confident that she’d be relatively easy to wean.

I started by separating her from her mom for half a day, gradually increasing the time until she was spending the entire day away from Aria by the end of the first week. Nights they spent together. This schedule I held for a few days. Now that we are midway through the second week, I will be putting them back in together in the afternoon for a few hours before separating them again overnight.

As hoped, Thisbe’s taking it pretty well. The best sign of this is that Thisbe doesn’t rush to nurse off Aria as soon as they are together again, content to merely eat from the same spot in the feeder for a while. She’s maintained her weight. Aria, as is typical, seems relieved to have a bit of private time away from her demanding cria.

This weekend, weaning will complete and Thisbe will become a full time resident of the weanling pen. I expect to have Aria back up to normal weight within a month. My next cria to wean won’t be until end of January or early February and I only hope it will go as smoothly as Thisbe’s.

Before I continue entering info on our herd into openherd, I thought I would select a few unposed photos of the show process. Tom and I learned a lot about driving with alpacas–check on them every 100 miles or so. It’s good for them to stop bouncing, there is ample opportunity to make certain they are eating and that there is plenty of clean water. As an added bonus, the driver gets to make a pit stop and the gasoline and coffee levels are topped off.

Tom spreads the cardboard bedding at Fall Fest

The show venue provides a bedding material, which needs to be de-lumped and spread to withing six or so inches of the edge of the stall. We joined in with Fox Run Suri Alpacas and rented two stalls since they only had one alpaca they were showing and we didn’t need our boy Cantu mating with both of our nearly-ready-to breed girls on this occasion.

Tom and Don spread out the alpaca mats

Alpaca mats are loosely woven stall-sized coverings that keep undesirable liquid (yes, that’s exactly what I mean) away from your beautiful show animals. Having them also means you don’t need excess hay or straw and you can easily remove beans from the area. Remember to bring hay and that you have clean water. We often buy, or bring water that the alpacas are accustomed to drinking and we bring hay from home since changing hay can cause digestive troubles.

The alpacas are under enough stress without adding to it.

Keeping the fleece clean at home and on the road means that it will have the luster and cleanliness needed to show it off to its best advantage. It’s not so much the bits of hay that are on top, as Cantu is showing as it is ground in nastiness that judges (quite rightly) hate to touch. The white alpaca, Fox Run’s Solaris by Apocalypse and our dark brown boy Fox Run’s Cantu by Nomar took home blue ribbons in the Spinoff as well as in Halter judging.

Solaris, who is for sale and can also be seen on Fox Run’s website and on Alpacanation also snagged the Judges Choice ribbon.

Seven ribbons for four alpacas isn’t very discouraging at all. I guess we’ll be doing more shows.

Eastland Alpacas open house this past weekend was wonderful! This FREE event was hosted on their sprawling farm in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania. On Sunday afternoon when we went, it seemed like a decent sized crowd. Most of all, the smile on every child’s face showed just how well appreciated the event was!

While the alpacas are the main attraction, families also enjoyed wagon rides, refreshments, obstacle course demonstrations and refreshments! I learned that the gestation period is 11 months for alpacas; their fur is harvested only once a year; and baby alpacas are called crias! A farm store was also open with some beautiful alpaca clothing, gifts and accessories.

What’s better – the open house continues this weekend on November 14 and 15!

I don’t have much time to blog this morning, but I thought I’d get a few words in since the last couple of blogs have been almost totally pictures. We have been busy, not only with getting our three attendees ready for the show, but also with learning as much as we can and the ubiquitous packing.

There are 10 girls who must be bred before they can come to Oklahoma and Fox Run’s Fierce Allegiance wants to know why he can’t get in on the action. He is our unproven soon-to-become herdsire, an extremely pretty, half accoyo boy. He can’t wait to be called a macho.

There are so many things we need to get–scales, a chute, enough hay for the winter, fencing, more halters and leads, a vet kit and medications and on and on. We plan to latch onto a few things at this show, so we’ll be shopping and showing.

We don’t have a lot of time before we have to get on the road and I’m not fully packed yet, so until the next blog, wish us well.

I certainly would like to take a load of things down to Oklahoma. I’ve been packing and packin

I certainly would like to take a load of things down to Oklahoma. I’ve been packing and packing and there are boxes just about everywhere. You don’t even want to see this it’s so depressing. The moving company that brought, named for a crimson, round child’s toy packed and shipped so poorly that I have boxes of broken things. It was such a nightmare that I would rather personally drive trucks to Oklahoma. I had insurance, but the fight to get them to pay even minimally almost destroyed my already somewhat precarious health.

They did give me $30 to fix the $900 clock that cost $300 to repair–the one they packed under cast iron garden ornaments with no packing material whatever. I could go on and on but I won’t. Hundreds of very nice things were damaged or outright smashed. Ugh! Let’s move on here.

Fantine and I trying to get to Carnegie Hall--practice, practice, practice

Why does Fantine always look so gorgeous, even down to the toes when I look like I just woke up? Maybe once I can spend more time with her I’ll learn her secret. She’s been beautiful from the moment she was born.

We are taking three of our alpacas to Fall Festival in Loveland, Colorado this upcoming weekend, Fantine, Cavatina, and Cantu. So in the midst of packing there’s this jaunt. It would have made sense to take a load of things and continue on to Oklahoma. But there has been a lot of rain and the new house and barn are still not habitable. In a few weeks, just not now, I’m told. Sigh.

Guess I’ll pack a few more boxes today.

Tomorrow, more alpaca walking and I pick up my spinning wheel! Will I get packed or will that have to wait until everything in the house is spun?

May I add spinning and carding to the list of things I do? Those of you who follow me on twitter, fa

May I add spinning and carding to the list of things I do?

Those of you who follow me on twitter, facebook and here probably know I am “simplifying” my life by moving to a ranch in Oklahoma, but it seems for everything I pack, I find thing new I need. I think I’m stockpiling for the future because I figure I may run out of things to do–or as I suggested in an earlier post–I just may be a hoarder.

My latest addition is a Louet spinning wheel. Linda Gardner or Blue Moon Ranch had a few people come over to spin. There were cookies and tea, four wheels, a drop spindle, six people and a lot of fleece. As the lone suri breeder (everyone else was spinning huacaya or merino sheep), I brought some of Madrigal’s cria fleece that the Coarse Broads had labeled as hand spin after skirting it. Madrigal is a pretty multi with plenty of luster and fineness, but not the best lock in the world… In other words, a spinner’s dream.

At Blue Moon Ranch amid spinning wheels

There were four wheels present and I tried my hand at all of them. To everyone’s amazement, I could spin almost right from the start on all but one of the wheels and I think the problem there was that I was getting a bit tired. My biggest problem was going slowly enough and taking the yarn up on the spindle on a regular basis to keep from getting too much twist in the yarn.

Some of the yarn I made

As you can see, there is plenty of twist. I found the single treadle Louet to be the easiest spinning wheel to learn on and–oddly enough, it was for sale. So I did what any good hoarder would do, I snatched it up and will pick it up on Monday. That gives the seller time to remove the yarn she was spinning. She will oil it up and have it ready to go. So now I have an additional career and an additional reason why I raise alpacas. For additional information about Linda’s alpacas check out bluemoonranch.net Her alpacacam is great for eavesdropping on alpacas and a boon for those without alpacas out the window.

Did you know you can spin suri without even carding it? My friend tazzieval from twitter tells me she uses a regular pet comb to straighten hers enough for spinning. I suspect I’m some way from being quite that confident.

Spinning on the Louet

As you can see from the photo of me at the Louet, spinning is serious work and, yes, that is actual yarn. If I can do it, you can do it. By the way, in Utah’s dry climate static electricity means the fleece sticks everywhere. I recommend not wearing dark colors when spinning light colored yarn.

The first weekend in November we will be in Loveland, Colorado, showing three of our alpacas, Cavati

The first weekend in November we will be in Loveland, Colorado, showing three of our alpacas, Cavatina, Fantine, and our boy Cantu. Everyone already has a couple of ribbons, ranging from blue through white, for halter shows or fleece, or spinoffs. So why continue with two girls who are ready to breed? (We have noticed their come hither looks focused on the boys.)

The truth is, we are doing this for ourselves, for experience. Tom and I have only physically attended one show, last spring in Phoenix where Cantu earned a blue under the tutelage of Don Llewellyn of Fox Run Suri Alpacas and Demi and I ventured out and took a fourth. But we didn’t own Cantu yet. Don took alpacas to other shows, some for us and some for them.

One of the reasons we wanted to raise alpacas besides their beauty and their winning personalities was that we wanted to go to shows. Now that we are moving to Oklahoma, it is unlikely we will be teaming up with the Llewellyns for most shows.

Cavatina with a red. Tika with a blue.

So if we want our alpacas to continue their winning ways, we figured we’d better get off our duffs and learn a bit more about shows. Don is kindly taking on the task of shepherding us though another show. The first task is haltering our darlings and reminding them how to walk on lead.

About the time our alpacas were weaned, they learned how to wear halters and be walked. So this time it was fairly easy. We simply selected approximately right-sized halters, approached our darlings in their stall after we had allowed every other alpaca to leave, and showed them the halters. With an arm around the neck the halter is slipped on making sure it is high enough on the nose that the alpaca can breathe easily and buckled on the side with room for a couple of fingers to slip easily between the halter and the alpaca.

Cavatina with her halter properly fitted and Tom in control

Tom keeps the lead firmly in his left hand, leaving a bit of slack that he controls by holding with his right hand. He talks to Cavatina (probably about political science or the economy) and his voice helps keep her calm. He will never let go of the lead and does not handle the clasp since the wrong motion can release the alpaca. He does not pull on Cavatina, but reassures her so she naturally comes with him. His right hand may allow slack in the lead until she gets the idea.

Since they are quite timid, always walk two of more alpacas together. You want them as calm as possible and the less stress they feel, the easier they will be to walk.

Coming soon, haltering cria.

This is an addendum to my previous post on registering alpacas. I figured it might be easier to visualize if you are able to see the blood card. It is fairly self explanatory and easy to complete. Put sufficient blood in the circle to almost fill it and let it air dry. On the back, where it is blurred is a Bar Code and the number your alpaca will have through all eternity.

Don’t forget to physically send the card to ARI–no blood, no registration. That and the information you filled out online (and the payment you made) gets you a nice certificate with a really cool hologram and you are all set to breed or show your alpaca.

Registering your cria seems daunting if you’ve never done it before, so I am going to outline

Registering your cria seems daunting if you’ve never done it before, so I am going to outline how it was done with Zena’s SkyKing by Kotzebue. Those of you who have already done this, hum to yourselves or look for something I need to clarify.

1. Order the blood cards from ARI once you know a cria or crias are on the way so you have them in hand. They may be purchased for $2.50 each right on the site. If you have never registered an alpaca before, this is also a good time to get your Alpaca Registry, Inc. log-in information. Anyone who owns an alpaca is a member, but you can also access useful, detailed information on the site by paying $14 and becoming an Associate Member. If you want to be a voting member and attend meetings, the fee is $30. This will result in a Herd Code. Keep this in your files.

2. This enables you to take a drop or two of the blood you use to test for IgG levels the day after birth and put it in the circle in the center of the card. One stick = two uses. On the top of the card on the back, write the cria’s call name and the date the blood was taken. Let the card dry naturally–don’t use heat to dry it. Then put it where you can find it later.

Don’t send it in until you are certain you have a viable cria. There is no sense in registering an animal that may die. Some people choose not to register animals that will not be bred. That is your decision.

3. The day to register has come. For SkyKing, born on October 5 and blood tested on October 6, that day was October 21. Following my mentor’s directions made the process much easier and less mind-boggling. Now we need the registrations of both of his parents: Accoyo Kotzebue of LCA and Fox Run’s Peruvian Sonnet and their ARI numbers and we go to the ARI site and log in on the home page using the . In the upper left-hand corner, click on the line that says I want to… The drop-down menu gives interesting options, but in this case, select Register A New Alpaca. The page that comes up will ask you to put a check-mark on your account, estimate the date of conception, enter the date of birth and the breed (Huacaya or Suri.)

On the following page, you will fill in the information on the dam and sire. Only cria that have parents that are both registered may be listed on the ARI registry. Some alpacas in Canada and Australia are registered with ARI.

On the next page, you will enter information about the cria, it’s name, gender, color, etc.

You are almost home-free. Carefully review all of the information. I enter my payment information and I am done! Oops, not so fast. Don’t forget to send in the blood card. Until ARI has it and your payment in hand no registration is completed and no Certificate of Registration is sent to you.

4. Carefully enter the information you just entered on the website again in tiny letters and numbers on the card or do as I did since my letters are too big to fit–on your computer in a tiny font, type the information and print it on a couple of labels or a label page so you can carefully cut out the lines and stick them on the card.

The last step is, mail and wait. Be sure to create a file for your alpaca so you don’t misplace the certificate and other information you accumulate for the animal.

There is also information should you wish to mail a check and do the registration entirely by mail, but online you know they have it almost instantaneously. They send a verification email.

I don’t care how long you’ve been alpaca ranching or if you want to do it in the future. This is a sight that will frequently scare you silly. There is an alpaca prone in your paddock/field. It looks like it could have been there quite some time.

Being relatively new to raising alpacas, I just stand there, horrified. What could have happened? What do I do now? Call the vet? Call the insurance company? How do you bury an alpaca?

I start toward the body of the gorgeous cria and the alpaca springs up, giving me a look of perturbed annoyance. Maybe I should shake the grain bucket next time. Sure, that would get me a couple dozen dirty looks when no grain was forthcoming.

By the way, the splotch of yellow is iodine, used to seal the navel of a newborn alpaca so bacteria don’t invade the body.

Zeke and Friends

I have included this photo of Zeke (gosh I think it’s Zeke in the foreground) because it was taken several months later and you can see the “dead” alpaca happily munching hay in the background. We are getting tags for our alpacas since they are rapidly increasing and we need to know who is who. Probably once we have day-to-day contact and have read the tags enough, we’ll connect the alpacas with their names without looking at tags.

I guess I’ll learn. My mentor wasn’t panicked. There were no circling vultures or flies. Sigh. Another alpaca lesson. Am I ready for this?

Thanks to Alpacafarmgirl for the idea for this blog. I enjoy her blogs. If you haven’t been following her, you’re missing out on lots of useful info one alpacas, fleece and spinning, and life in general.

.5 alpacas can be very nice. When they are very young boys, they can be inexpensive. In a year, this could be a hunka, hunks burning love or a nice fleece animal.

Today we signed up for the Fall Festival in Loveland, CO. This will be our second show although our alpacas have been to a few more. I love alpaca shows!

So far: Demi has taken a fourth at the Southwest Regional Alpaca Show and a second for fleece at the Suri Network, Cantu has been in the top 3 three times in some pretty impressive shows, blue-red-white. Bravo Cantu. Cavatina has two reds, one for the whole package and one for fleece. Fantine has a red for fleece despite a nasty break when she was quite young.

We have a basket-full of ribbons that came with the alpacas we just bought, including a several color championships.

Hmmm… What do you think about shows and ribbons? Do you enter? Do you win? Does it add to the value of an alpaca or is it a waste of money? Does the quality of a show alpaca have anything to do with ribbons? Do ribbons won influence how much you like an alpaca or how much you would pay for it?

I love and believe in shows and I will keep on showing our alpacas, but I would like to hear from you. What do you think?

We purchased our first alpacas fifteen months ago and everyone thought we were crazy. Maybe we were.

We purchased our first alpacas fifteen months ago and everyone thought we were crazy. Maybe we were. We had no farm or ranch, nowhere to keep them. OK, so we decided to agist. (That means the alpacas would stay at the ranch where we purchased them and would be cared for and receive any necessary medical treatment.) This is a great way to find out if alpaca ownership is for you since you can buy only one and if you purchase from the right seller, you can get some hands-on experience before you take them home.

We did just that, but start with three. We bought three since we knew we would someday have our own place and would need at least two (alpacas do not do well alone) and there was a nice discount for purchasing more at the same time. Since I wanted them so badly, dear Tom gave in and we signed the contract. Two days later our fourth alpaca was born, a true black girl we named Demelza. Wow! Instant appreciation on our investment.

Over time, through additional acquisitions and births, our little herd grew to nine and we suddenly became aware that agisting fees were going to keep going up and up. What to do? We had land in Oklahoma we had purchased about five years ago. We decided to build a house and barn and take our alpacas there. Big steps for us.

In the course of building, the house developed into something like 3300 square feet with a garage (from 1600 square feet with no garage) and the 3600 square foot barn, while remaining about the same size downstairs, found itself with an approximately 1000 square foot apartment on top. As the alpacas would say, “Hmmm…”

By now we had 10 alpacas with three new crias due in the next year. Thirteen is unlucky, isn’t it? So we decided to do what anyone would do in the situation. We bought additional alpacas.

You did what?

We bought 17 females, one potential herdsire and one-half share in another and to top things off out popped someone you’ve seen in a previous blog–SkyKing, who will henceforth be known as Zena’s SkyKing by Kotzebue (gosh I hope I spelled that right.) He is the first of our own ranch-named alpacas.

Kathleen and Rhapsody Seal the Deal with a Kiss

We did not pull these alpacas out of mid-air or another dimension. Our new herd is the work or Carla and Don Llewellyn of Fox Run Suri Alpacas in Wanship, Utah. They will be concentrating on the Herdsire aspect of alpacas and we will take on the distaff obligations.

More tomorrow. Right now I need to hyperventilate into a paper bag.
