So, as most of you game lovers probably know Iby now, the PlayStation Network just rereleased the ol

So, as most of you game lovers probably know Iby now, the PlayStation Network just rereleased the old 1997 FFVII for $10 on the PS3 and PSP. I just got it a few days ago myself, after finally finding a playstation network card after looking in 9 different stores all over Vancouver. Anyway, this was probably one of the best games ever made (second second best according to the gamefaqs polls, but at least it came in second to another great game: Ocarina of Time) but I didn’t think reviewing it would be a good idea, because everybody’s played it, or at least knows what it’s about. So instead, I’ve decided to review one of the many spin offs of the game: Crisis Core. Crisis Core is available on PSP.

Story: 8/10

The story is definitely interesting. It’s a prequel to the original FFVII, and you play as the character Zack, whom you find out about near the end of the game in the original story . It’s really fun to play through some of those mysteries that the original left behind. It clears up some answers from the “first” game as well. Although it is a prequel, there is a lot of original storyline of the game, that doesn’t really seem related in any way to the original Final Fantasy VII… I could be wrong. Honestly I haven’t finished it yet, but it has a really good story so far.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics are really good. I find it so hard to believe that a little handheld PSP could have better graphics than the old PlayStation… but I guess that’s how technology goes. Anyway, I’d say they’re up to par with PS2 graphics almost. And the cinematics are just amazing.

Innovation: 7/10

I’m not exactly a fan of the classic turn based gaming, so I was excited to learn about the new battle system. It’s pretty basic… just button mashing for the most part, but you can change your battle type from attack to use materia or an item by just using your L and R buttons along the bottom of the screen. The only problem I have with this, is that your enemies are free to attack you because it’s not turn based, so if you’re somewhat clumsy like I am, you may fumble over the buttons and get hit numerous times, and possibly even die while you’re trying to get to your potions. The other new thing they added in this game, is the leveling system, which I have to say… I really didn’t like. It almost seems like you’re just playing the slots and you level up through luck, because you need to get all 7’s to level up while you’re doing one of Zack’s special attacks, which also have to be activated by slots landing on three of the same character-. However, I have since been informed that it is not by chance, and that the longer you go without leveling up, the more chance you have of leveling up. But I think I’d still rather go with the basic EXP, and meter to see how close you are to the next level.

Overall: 9/10

I would definitely recommend this game. It’s no where near as good as the first one, but I’m definitely enjoying it so far. The good thing is that if for some reason you haven’t played the original, you don’t really need to know the story from it, so you can play this one anyway. And also, if you’re a fan of the FFVII series, you may like the story in this game, as you get to play through the events that happen previously to the story… or it may ruin it completely for you. I’d still say it’s worth it though, and it’s probably the best game I’ve played for PSP so far.

Following on the success of the immensely popular Final Fantasy 7 and the various spin-offs and medi

Following on the success of the immensely popular Final Fantasy 7 and the various spin-offs and media from that work, Square Enix has turned to a portable spin-off for the PSP in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 that explores the character of Zack some years before the events in the main FF7 game. While the game does try to standalone from knowledge of FF7, it is best appreciated with full awareness of the previous title. The game itself is very well done and works perfectly as a PSP title, but some odd, though not game-breaking, design choices lead to the game being a lot easier than I believe the creators envisioned.

Story: A-

The game takes place in the years before the events of FF7, and focus on the history of Zack, the other SOLDIER that was present at the pivotal mission with Sephiroth and Cloud, and in fact shows the events of that mission in more detail. But before that, it presents who Zack his and how he became ranked in SOLDIER, how his friendship with Sephiroth, Cloud, and other SOLDIER and Turks came about, and how he fell in love with Aerith. Much of the plot is a mirror of the events that ultimately occur in Cloud and Sephiroth’s fate, in that another scientist has started to look into human cloning. Some of these events filter into the other FF7 media, including Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus and despite being a prequel to all these, doesn’t seem to retcon the history already established.

Needless to say, the story won’t be as easy to follow if you’ve not played through FF7, but at the same time, they do try to make the story self-standing and only passing familarity with the existing characters is just necessary for a good appreciation of the game. There is a bit of fan service by dropping hints to other characters and events in FF7, such as a few of the side missions involving Yuffie, and the name-dropping of Cid.

As for the actual story, it’s a tad confusing at first, as there’s a bit too much overlap between the parts of the game that teach the game mechanics and that introduce all the characters. However, about 1/3rd of the way through the game, the story does get going pretty well, and, presuming you’ve worked through FF7, you’ll start to see how the pieces fall into place. The ending is pretty well done even it is clear how it will end as they help to invest time in the critical characters to make you feel them moreso than in an average RPG (it may help that you only control one character throughout the game, and thus you’re more vested in that one character than 6 or so).

Gameplay: B+

Unlike FF7, Crisis Core is more an action-based game, and designed differently from most of the other Final Fantasy titles. The main mission in the game spans several chapters, with each chapter a part of a mission for Zack through various aspects of the world. There’s no overworld, but instead you’ll be taken to each area of importance which you can then walk around to interact with the people and environment, in a manner similar to Final Fantasy XII, including down to the little dotted lines to know when you’ll cross into a new area. Once you’ve completed what you need to do in that area of the world, you move onto the next, and this process repeats for the rest of the game.

However, the main story missions are supplemented by side missions you can take at any save point. One selected, you are whisked off to the mission area, one of about eight special areas that are repeated used in the missions but have means of creating artificial barriers as to keep you confined to one part of the map. On these missions, your goal is usually to defeat one or more fixed enemies that wait at the end of the course. Successful completion gives you a reward and more missions to complete, but failing doesn’t end the game, just returns you back to the save point you were at. The only time you can die and be forced to load from a saved game is if you fall during the main story missions.

Most encounters are random and invisible, though you’ll come to recognize that the game only activates these in areas where there is enough space; there’s otherwise no distinction between standard movement and combat display. In combat, you can attack, dodge, block, use items, or use spells and abilities inferred by equipped materia. The combat is active, allowing you move out of the way of a projected attack, or get around to an opponent’s backside to inflect critical hits, and otherwise works pretty well once you get the hang of the game’s timing and approach. The game works well on the PSP as the game always locks you onto an enemy and uses a decent means of trying to keep Zack in the picture when the battle moves around. The controls are fine here – the d-pad keys work just as well as the analog nub for movement, while the attack and block are on the face buttons; the various skills and abilities are selected by tapping the shoulder buttons to move between the options. It initially takes a bit of work, but its a system that you can easily slip into.

You gain materia from missions and stores that you can access via menus at any time, but you can only equip six materia. Most of the materia from FF7 are here, including the usual magic spells, special attacks, passive abilities such as Libra to scan enemies, and stat and skill bonuses. The game gives you the ability to fuse materia together, most of the time to improve the power of one of the materia, but other times to create entirely new materia; this latter, however, is fewer and far between than I would have liked, as I only found 3 or 4 successful combinations (which you’re told of before you commit to fusion) that gave entirely new ones. Later in the game you also get the ability to add in other materials to the fusion to further boost the stats that benefit Zack.

The game’s primary trick is the “Digital Mind Wave”, two sets of 3-wheeled slot machines that run automatically in battle as long as you have Soldier Points that are gained from killing enemies. As long as you take missions, you will not run out of Soldier Points (it costs 10 to spin, I ended up with more than 400,000 SP by the end of the game), so you’ll always get the benefits of what results. The nature of the reward depends on the semi-random nature of the set of wheels with pictures of characters that Zack befriends in the game. Should two of the pictures line up, the game pauses for a moment to show you the third wheel’s result and the second set of wheels, the numbers 1-7, as they come to a stop. If all three pictures match, then Zack will automatically do a Limit Break attack that is based on the matched character (e.g. matching Aerith will massively heal you, matching Cloud will fire off a Meteor attack). In this case as well, if you get a pair of numbers on the other set of wheels, the materia in that associated slot will level up, increasing its power or benefit. Matching all 7’s will level of Zack – however, this is less a random chance and more based on an “invisible” experience meter (that is, it is impossible level Zack up by biding one’s time in a long protracted battle where you just dodge and let the DMW spin). Even if the pictures don’t line up, you will still get a bonus in battle by matching up the numbers, such as limited invincibility or no-cost spell use for a few moments. As noted the wheels are “semi-random”, as the matching will be influenced by your current Limit state, which is built up as you take damage and after certain story events; the higher the Limit meter, the more likely pictures will match up. There’s also certain points in the main story that further weight th wheel down in favor of specific characters and will also affect the chances of getting a match. Also, once you collect certain objects in the world, the wheels will sometimes change into pictures of possible Summons (your Ifrit, Bahamut, etc.) or in another case, the more comical Summons like Cait Sith, Chocobo, or Moogle. The former summons are of course super powerful attacks (with fortunately a cutscene you can skip once you’ve seen it once), while the latter usual impact a nice attack or health benefit for Zack.

The DMW mechanics is certainly unusual and has both advantages and disadvantages. One clear advantage is that when the game pauses to show you the results of the wheel stops when a match is possible, you get a brief respite from button mashing in the game. The randomness of the wheel also forces you to play smart, working for points of opportunity for back attacks or striking as a group instead of expecting to be able to fell the group in one blow. The largest drawback of the DMW is the fact that you cannot predict how it works, and thus, if you’re looking to level up your materia, you simply need to “grind” as to give enough time for the DMW to end up on matches. Fortunately, and what is a saving grace for the game, is that “grinding” is made easy through the side missions. Instead of walking around the same area between save points luring monsters into battle, the missions at least add some variety with the different areas they send you to and guarantees of reward items at the end of the day. Yes, you will have to grind, but you may not realize that you are doing it as you go along.

Even though this is a benefit of dealing with the DMW, this leads to the major drawback of the game – if you do do a lot of missions, either purposely grinding, or if you’re like me and you just have to do them, you will quickly grow super powerful and will make the main part of the game a cinch to finish. At the end of the game, I was regularly landing attacks that did 3000-4000 HP of damage, with the damage meter being maxed out at 9999; very few foes in the main storyline, including the end bosses, posed any significant challenge as a result between straight up attacks and the use of Curaga every other attack cycle; this was basically after completing about 40% of the 300 missions available, so I dare wonder what a character that’s done all 300 missions would be like. Part of this was my own playing of the games; at the start I didn’t see missions being all that value and just pumped through the first 1/3rd of the game’s main story until I got to a boss I couldn’t defeat easily (one attack was more than what I had in HP), so I spent time powering through all the missions that I could do, and repeated that pattern once every chapter or so (side note: missions are ranked from Very Easy to Very Hard depending on your stats, so as you gain power, missions that were once Very Hard will be listed as being easier. Thus, I would do all the mission up to Normal and maybe a Hard or two, and find that after running through a number, I’d have new Normal-difficult missions to take that were originally Hard or Very Hard. Thus, the missions provide a cycle that’s hard to break until you’ve basically done all you can per what you’ve opened by the main story, leaving the most difficult missions for later). Then when I got to a boss about 2/3rd through the game that I couldn’t beat, and that I had exhausted most of the available missions, I went to materia fusion and basically maxed out what I could with attack, HP and defensive bonuses. From then on, I had nearly no problems with anything on the main story (side missions were still difficult as those creatures do sometimes scale with your skill level). I don’t know if this was necessary bad or good that the game ended up being that easy to complete; Final Fantasy games are notorious for very difficult endgames but this was pretty simple. I’m sure that if you’re more intent on driving through the main game and do just the bare amount of side missions, the challenge will be there, but its hard not to see how, with those side missions calling out to you, that you wouldn’t want to make Zack as powerful as possible. I think the imbalance basically comes as a combination that the side missions not only boost your stats but also reward you handsomely (there’s some really powerful materia and items as rewards from that), and that if they had reduced the quality of the mission rewards, then there would have been more a challenge in the endgame.

That said, there is one aspect of the side missions that work to this game’s advantage, and that is the fact that they are generally short – 5 to 10 minutes – and drop you back to the save point when you are done. This is perfectly ideal for use on the PSP which you may only play in short bursts.

Value/Replayability: A-

With me having done about 40% of the 300 missions, I completed the game in about 15 hours; I would suspect that with all the missions, we’d be looking at close to 25 hrs for a 100% completed game. Your mileage may vary depending on how far you take the missions, but this is a pretty decent length for a game. That said, the main story itself, cutscenes and all, is probably only about 5-6 hrs long. Completing the game unlocks a harder difficulty , though otherwise doesn’t alter the main story.

Graphics: A

The game looks perfectly fine on the PSP – the 3D is well done, smooth, and everything is pretty clear to see on the small screen. There’s a handful of pre-rendered cutscenes as well, in the same style as Advent Children. Nothing really wrong in this area.

Audio: A-

Most of the major story points in the game are voiced, reusing past actors where appropriate for their roles. Musical themes are also reused when possible, but for the most part the game uses mostly new music. It’s not as great as other themes, but still a good soundtrack for this.

Overall: A-

Crisis Core for the most part works as a good action-based RPG on the PSP. The combat system is simple and easy to learn, it includes some of the best features of FF7, and encourages strategic thinking associated with a random element. It also has a gameplay feature via the side missions that’s well suited to playing in short bursts on the portable unit. The presentation is also spot on for a Square Enix game. However, if there is a fault, it is that the combination of game elements seems to direct the player into easily creating an over-powered character through the side missions, resulting in the main story side being less of a challenge than most Final Fantasy games. This is not necessary game-breaking, but an odd design decision that makes you wonder if the designers thought everything through. Regardless, the game does try to create something that stands alone from FF7 if you’ve not played it, but the game is best enjoyed with full knowledge of the earlier title.

Tá ligado a serotonina, né?

E eu fui descendo a espadada até… começar… a… ficar… can… sa… do.

Logo, ficam aqui duas perguntas:

Alright folks. This is not a review. I just want to tell that after struggling for time over the past three months, I have finally completed my “100% completion” of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Yeap, that means:

Collected all items, each as maximum as I can get. And I did not miss any miss-able items.

Unlocked all Shops.

Obtained the Genji Helm, Genji Armor, all Flower Wagons.

Defeated Minerva – it was not so difficult after all, once you get the hang of it. It could take a long time, that is all.

Completed a wonderful set of materias, with awesome statistics. Now I will not get detail on the materia combinations, but they are the best.

Unlocked all Mails.

Maxed Level.

Unlocked all DMWs with maxed out Limit Breaks/Verges and Progress Screen – meaning I unlocked all the memory scenes as well.

Completed all Missions.

This is faster than I originally anticipated. Well, this is what I get when I spend about three hours every weekend religiously just on this wonderful game.

Now, I know I said I will not do any review, but a little will not hurt right. Those of you who played Final Fantasy VII would know about Zack Fair, the true face behind Cloud Strife’s outward personality. I always liked this guy for some reason. And when Crisis Core came out, he is as every bit as I imagined. Actually he is better because he is not as cold as Cloud is.

The wonderful thing about Crisis Core is that unlike any of the other Final Fantasy games, you already what is going to happen in the end – Crisis Core is a prequel to the original Final Fantasy VII. Zack Fair would meet his end at the end of the game. Throughout the game, various references to Final Fantasy VII is made, and these sets the tone right.

For example, in Crisis Core, it would be revealed why Aeris wears that pink ribbon on her hair. Gamers will also be made known how Tifa’s bar, the 7th Heaven, name comes from. It would also reveal the true story behind what exactly happened in Nibelheim during Sephiroth’s raid – all in the eyes of the courages Zack Fair.

Gamers will also be introduced to Sephiroth during his good days, before he becomes lost. One of the more interesting moment in this game is when Cloud was introduced in the movie, also the first time when Zack and Aeris meet, and eventually how they become a couple.

All these events made me feel nostalgic, more so because we know what would happen to Zack at the end of the game. And that moment is so sad, so very sad, that it would make any sane human cry their lungs out. And shortly after that, in one brief moment, we see how Cloud inherits Zack’s personality within him.

Games of today are very different than what they use to be. They have become so complex that they capture the emotions of us gamers. And for that reason, I am glad to be a gamer.

Juego: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.Género: Action RPG.Plataforma: PSP. El cuarto juego de la “com

Juego: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Género: Action RPG.
Plataforma: PSP.

Sencillo, ¿no?

Equipando a Zack

Juego: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Género: Action RPG.
Plataforma: PSP.

Sencillo, ¿no?

Equipando a Zack

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (クライシス コア -ファイナルファンタジーVII, -Kuraishisu Koa -Fainaru Fantajī Sebun-) i

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (クライシス コア -ファイナルファンタジーVII, -Kuraishisu Koa -Fainaru Fantajī Sebun-) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and is also the fourth entry in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which also includes the games Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, as well as the CGI movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and the anime, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. Production was overseen by Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VII, with Hajime Tabata as the game’s director and Tetsuya Nomura as the game’s character designer. The game mainly focuses around Zack Fair, a 2nd Class (and later 1st class) SOLDIER, and the events leading up to his destined demise. He meets many of the Final Fantasy VII characters, including Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough, with whom he develops strong bonds. The game’s storyline takes the player from the war with the Wutai to the events at Nibelheim, and right up to the time just before the Final Fantasy VII beginning. Some of the missing events or plot holes from Nibelheim and afterwards are explained in the animated feature, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII

.

Gameplay

Crisis Core has action- and menu-based elements. The new battle system is known as Digital Mind Wave, or “DMW”, and revolves around a series of reels at the upper left corner of the screen which spin continuously as long as there are Soldier Points, or “SP” left to consume. Each reel rotates independently and upon lining up three reels of the same character and value, a power-up or a “Power Surge!” will be rewarded to Zack. The player has full control over Zack when moving around, and can rotate the camera with the left and right triggers. Enemies abound in the field screen, battles against whom take place in real time. Enemies can be attacked physically and magically. Spells such as Fire and Cure are located on the command bar rather than in a separate sub-menu like in Final Fantasy VII, and used in the same fashion as previous titles. Materia makes a return, fully customizable and in the multiple varieties from Final Fantasy VII, including green (spells) and yellow (extra commands: Steal, Sense, etc.). In addition, Materia can be fused together to enhance one Materia’s abilities (such as making a Cure Materia that increases HP), or to make an entirely new Materia. The Materia the player has equipped determine the Magic and special commands on the in battle menu. Defensive and evasive maneuvers can also be used, such as dodge-rolling and blocking incoming attacks. Following the completion of the game, the player will obtain a New Game Plus option. Also The USA release of Crisis Core has an added Hard mode to the game which causes the enemies to gain doubled stats, and a 10x HP gain.

Setting

Characters

The central character in Crisis Core is Zack Fair, the SOLDIER member known from Cloud’s past in the original game, and Professor Hojo and Jenova are also present. Many characters known from Dirge of Cerberus are also present, and so other returning characters include Weiss, Nero, Genesis Rhapsodos. Vincent Valentine also makes an appearance if Zack opens his coffin in Nibelheim, although the player does not see his face as Zack gets spooked at the sight of a “dead” body and closes the coffin saying that Vincent should be left to sleep in peace. There are many returning characters from the Final Fantasy VII series so far, including the main character from Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife. The main villain, Sephiroth returns, this time during his time in SOLDIER, and we also see the majority of the other playable characters from the original game, namely Aerith Gainsborough, Tifa Lockhart, Yuffie Kisaragi, Cait Sith, along with members of the Turks also seen in the original, Tseng, Reno and Rude. The Turk with the shuriken from Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, Cissnei, returns in Crisis Core. Angeal Hewley (アンジール・ヒューレー, Anjīru Hyūrē): A SOLDIER 1st Class who acts as a mentor to Zack to whom he seems to have become something of a patron. He is a respected 1st Class and has a great sense of responsibility and wisdom and is a companion to Sephiroth and Genesis, the latter of whom he grew up with in the rural village of Banora. Angeal is the original owner of the Buster Sword used by Zack and, later, Cloud, which was purchased for him by his late father using all the family’s savings. He tends not to use the weapon, however, claiming that “use brings about wear, tear and rust”. When Zack encounters him in the Midgar plate interior, it is revealed that, as a result of genetic manipulation through Project G, Angeal bears one white wing on his right shoulder. Angeal’s surname is derived from the Greek word hyle which is translated as materia in Latin. Angeal is voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue in the Japanese version and Josh Gilman in the English version. Genesis Rhapsodos (ジェネシス・ラプソードス, Jeneshisu Rapusōdosu): A 1st class member of SOLDIER and close friend of Angeal and Sephiroth. He is the result of Project G that Dr. Gast, Dr. Crescent, and Dr. Hojo organized. Like Angeal, he has a single wing, but his is black and protrudes from the left shoulder. He is a mysterious figure who is known to favor the play LOVELESS which he apparently found in his parents’ study, and often recites lines from the play. He makes an appearance first in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII’s secret ending, but his name is unknown to the player at that point, only being referred to as “G”. His last name is a reference to the greek word “ραψωδός” which means “rhapsodist”. He is voiced by Gackt in the Japanese version and Oliver Quinn in the English version. Lazard (ラザード, Razādo?): The director of Shinra’s SOLDIER department which, during the events of Crisis Core, is an independent department of the company (in Final Fantasy VII there is no SOLDIER Director on the Shinra board, and Lazard’s portfolio has apparently been subsumed by Heidegger). Lazard has received promotions at an exceptional speed to attain his present status within the organization. The reason for this is hinted at subtly throughout Lazards various SOLDIER missives that Zack receives during the course of the game. Later on, he is altered into an Angeal Clone, and dies after the Shinra army attack him and the incapacitated Cloud. As confirmed in the FFVII Ultimania Guide, Lazard is in fact the illegitimate son of President Shinra and is the half-brother of Vice President Rufus Shinra. He is voiced by Stefan Marks in the English release of Crisis Core. Professor Hollander (ホランダー, Horandā): A former Shinra scientist who holds a grudge against Hojo, due the power struggle for leader of Shinra’s Department of Scientific Research that cost Hollander his status and reputation. He is the father of Angeal and the creator of Project G, originally Project Gillian as he uses his wife as a carrier and extracts it from her into Genesis. He sides with Genesis originally, serving to halt his degradation, until Genesis had no more use for his services, but Genesis let him live since he later injected himself with G cells. He has a small black wing and his body begins to deteriorate quickly. He is voiced by Shinya Ohwada in the original Japanese version and by Sterling Young in the English dub. Other characters include Kunsel (カンセル, Kanseru), a member of SOLDIER and a very good friend of Zack who helps Zack from time to time in the game. He serves to teach Zack (and the player) the mechanics of the game and provides tutorials. Luxiere (ルクシーレ, Rukushīre) is a Second class SOLDIER who is a fan of Zack and emails Zack regularly. Through one of his emails, he informs Zack that he has been selected for promotion to 1st class.

Plot

On a Shinra Electric Power Company helicopter above a train in Midgar, Angeal gives Zack orders about his mission. Zack jumps from the helicopter on to the train below and begins to fight Shinra infantrymen (who Angeal claims to be Wutai operatives in disguise) and fights more when he arrives at the train station in a scene very reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII’s opening. At that time, the SOLDIER Mass Disappearance Incident occurred when, during combat operations in Wutai, Genesis, a first class member of SOLDIER, went missing without a trace along with many other SOLDIERs. The Shinra Company’s top management assessed the situation and decided to send out SOLDIER in order to bring an end to the war and clarify the scandal, and so, Angeal and Zack, as well as Sephiroth, whose name would come to be known throughout the world as a hero, were dispatched to Wutai.

Development and release

The game was announced at E3 2004 before the release of the PlayStation Portable. Its first trailer consisted of clips from the OVA Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. In an interview for Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura had stated that a playable demo of the game would be ready by the end of 2006. However, there was no mention of whether the demo would be openly available to PSP owners. However, a playable demo was available at Jump Festa ‘06. Angeal’s design was originally to be the main character design in Final Fantasy VII, but was replaced with Cloud’s final design. On September 13, 2007 Square Enix released a special edition bundle for Crisis Core, which included a copy of the game which had a special box cover art of Zack Fair standing in front of Shin-Ra HQ holding the Buster Sword in front of him (shown further up the page), special silver coloured slim and light PSP (PSP-2000 as it is called in Japan) with Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary insignia on the back, on one side, designed by Tetsuya Nomura, and the meteor from Final Fantasy VII on the other side, Buster Sword strap, and came packaged in a box similar to that of a shoe box. As with many limited edition Final Fantasy VII releases by Square Enix, the bundle was limited to 77,777 units. On December 17th, 2007 it was announced that Crisis Core would be coming to the United States on March 25, 2008. If pre-ordered from certain retailers such as Gamestop, the buyer may receive a Shinra UMD case, depending on how long supplies last at each retailer and if pre-ordered from Best Buy, the buyer may receive Crisis Core with a metallic foil cover. Two versions of the game will be released in Europe: alongside the regular edition available at retail, there will be a limited edition version only available online, and then only when pre-ordered. This limited edition version includes special slipcase packaging and a book of promotional CG artwork entitled “The Art of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-”.

Audio

The game’s soundtrack was released on October 10, 2007, covering 55 songs across two discs. The music was composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, with a few tracks by Kazuhiko Toyama. The soundtrack also includes remixes of various music from Final Fantasy VII and “Final Fantasy VII – Last Order” composed by Nobuo Uematsu. The game’s theme song is called “Why”, by Ayaka.

Reception

Crisis Core sold 350,000 copies in Japan on its release date, including the 77,777 Limited Edition PSP/Crisis Core bundles. Square Enix recently announced that Crisis Core was its best-selling game across all regions from April through September with 710,000 copies sold in Japan. Crisis Core has received generally positive reviews. With individual scores of 9/9/8/9, Crisis Core received an overall rating of 35/40 points from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. GameSpot gave the game a score of 9/10, praising its plot, as well as its overall presentation. Due to this, the game was credited as being one of the “Editor’s Choice”. IGN gave it 8.5/10, citing its great overall presentation and story. It also received a place amongst the “Editor’s Choice” gallery of recommended games for the PSP platform. On Metacritic, it has an average score of 85 through 30 reviews. X-Play gave it a 2/5 with complaints about the unskippable cutscenes, dialogue, gameplay, and plot. The review quickly became one of their most criticized reviews. On April Fools’ Day, in response to criticism over their original review, they “decided to give the game a second look and gave it a mock rereview, this time with a clear unbiased perspective,” editing in favorable voiceovers (from someone other than Adam Sessler) and giving it a 6/5. As of April 1, 2008, Crisis Core has sold 301,600 copies upon its first month of release in the United States. Behind the sales of God of War: Chains of Olympus (340,500), Crisis Core was the 2nd best-selling game for the PSP during the month of March and the 6th best-selling game overall. As of November 19, 2007, the game has sold 710,000 copies in Japan according to Square Enix, and as of April 17, 2008, 301,600 copies in the United States according to the NPD Group
