Sundance recently announced its 2010 Short Films lineup, which is comprised of 70 shorts from US and

Sundance recently announced its 2010 Short Films lineup, which is comprised of 70 shorts from US and international filmmakers, selected from 6,092 submissions. If you do the math, that’s 6022 rejected short films. Out of the 70 selected, it is impossible to ignore the fact that several are created by established actors/directors/writers. To review,”He’s Just Not Into You / Sex and the City scribe Liz Tuccillo, actor James Franco, director Spike Jonze, Afterschool’s producer Sean Durkin, Married Life’s writer/director Ira Sachs, Rory Kennedy (yes, she’s a Kennedy), Paper Heart’s writer/director Nicholas Jasenovec got slots for their shorts as did shorts featuring well-known actors Don Cheadle and Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Crispin Glover.

Now I can’t speak to how good these shorts are as I haven’t seen them but I am pretty sure Sundance rejected films that are on par with them, if not better (self-disclosure: I recently screened a rejected Sundance short that was beautifully shot and acted). The elephant in the room is that Sundance is running their shorts program much like their feature films program – star-driven. The reason remains the same — stars bring in the money in the form of sponsorship dollars and paying audiences. While I don’t blame Sundance (or for that matter most festivals) for selecting star-driven features, is it really necessary for them to apply the same tactics to the shorts film program? New filmmakers rely on Sundance to get their work screened by industry professionals in the hopes of getting discovered. By programming a Spike Jonze short, in essence this takes a way a slot from a less established filmmaker. If Sundance is supposed to be about the discovery of talent, then why in the world do they need to program a short film written and directed by James Franco? He’s already established. Ditto Liz Tuccillo, Nicholas Jasenovec and Rory Kennedy. They all are repped by agents and/or managers and/or have the connections to move their career forward (if that’s their end goal). They don’t need Sundance to do that for them. To that end, I implore Sundance (and other industry attended film festivals) to evaluate and reconsider their shorts film selection in the future. Call me an optimist, but I am hopeful that if the Sundances of the world do right by filmmakers, audiences will embrace discovering new talent regardless of who wrote/directed/acted in the shorts.

Ah, the future. Weight has nothing to do with it in "Back to the Future." People who chanc

Ah, the future. Weight has nothing to do with it in "Back to the Future."

People who chance upon the wonder of time travel all tend to want the same thing: second chances. For what is time travel if not the ultimate cosmic do-over, a chance to make a different choice in the past and hope that alteration will improve the future? Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is a little different. With youth on his side, he has few real regrets, so his accidental time-travel mission involves changing the lives of others. It just so happens those “other lives” belong to his teen-age parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson) circa 1955.

Director Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote ”Back to the Future” with Bob Gale, merges these two unlikely concepts to create a film brimming with wit, intelligence, sidesplitting sight gags, more than a little heart and a most creative (if monumentally disturbing) reinvention of the Oedipus complex. “Back to the Future,” then, is a rare movie indeed, one where there’s sturdy balance of science fiction and humor. Factor in the very human and subtly poignant backstory that involves the redemption of a painfully timid character, and the first installment of this trilogy becomes even more rare: a film that does, in the simplest sense of the word, offer something for everyone.*

The story Zemeckis and Gale creates begins in 1985 in Hill Valley, Calif., where Marty lives what he believes is an unenviable life. His father George (Crispin Glover) lacks a spine and spends his days at work being bullied by his boss (Thomas F. Wilson), while his mother Lorraine (Lea Thompson) glugs vodka at dinner. But there are two things that make Marty happy: his girlfriend (Claudia Wells) and his friendship with scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), a kook who sports a ‘do that puts Albert Einstein’s to shame. He’s the kind of chap, we expect, whose inventions never amount to much … until the day they do. Doc Brown’s constant tinkering moves from strange to astounding when he accidentally creates a time machine out of a souped-up DeLorean. Why a DeLorean? “If you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” Oh, that Christopher Lloyd. Always with the bug-eyed witticisms.

A chase (also accidental) finds Marty rocketing down the Twin Pines Mall parking lot in the time machine and landing somehow in 1955. And Hill Valley in 1955 is as unprepared to experience Marty as he is to experience Hill Valley. The ’80s-centric teen can’t quite believe what’s happened to him until he finds himself sharing counter space at the local malt shop with his father, a hopelessly shy nerd. That meeting leads to a mishap that changes Marty’s parents’ initial meeting (turns out his mother finds her future son most attractive) and threatens to alter his own life permanently.

The clash between 1950s-era ideals and Marty’s futuristic notions — pay attention to the smallest details; they matter — provides some of the funniest moments. Hill Valley’s townspeople see his puffy vest and keep asking him why he’s wearing a life jacket. A much-younger Doc Brown scoffs at the idea that Ronald “the actor?” Reagan could win the presidency. “I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady,” he retorts, and later imagines plutonium is sold like Tylenol in drugstores in 1980s America. At the school dance, Marty rips into a guitar solo that leaves the students speechless. “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet,” he observes, but assures them “your kids are gonna love it.”

What’s amazing about “Back to the Future” is the timeless feel of these sight gags. Over the years, every last one of them has refused to age, to seem dated or grow stale. Instead, they feel as fresh and funny today as they did in 1985. That timelessness is a powerful testament to the strength of the actors’ performances (here we see glimpses of the exquisite comic timing that would make Fox a name) and Gale and Zemeckis’ visionary script. Perhaps that’s because “Back to the Future” reminds us that while we can’t predict our future, our choices give us the power to navigate it how we choose.

OK, so when I saw the title for the movie, I thought to myself “WTF?!?”. I decided to go on YouTube and check out this trailer. It’s actually kinda funny. I want another trailer to be released so I can get more of the plot line and see some more scenes. But so far, I like.

“The Hot Tub Time Machine” is about four friends who who’ve become bored with their adult lives: Adam has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou is a party guy who can’t find the party; Nick’s wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob won’t leave his basement. After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, the men wake up, heads’ pounding, in the year 1986. This is their chance to kick some past and change their futures – one will find a new love life, one will learn to stand up for himself with the ladies, one will find his mojo, and one will make sure he still exists!

“The Hot Tub Time Machine” stars John Cusack (2012), Rob Corddry (What Happens In Vegas), Craig Robinson (The Office), Clark Duke (Greek), Lizzy Caplan (Party Down), Crispin Glover (Charlie’s Angels), Sebastian Stan (Gossip Gil), and Chevy Chase (Community).

“The Hot Tube Time Machine” opens in theaters on March 19, 2010

First of all, you might as well just watch trailer 2. They released two trailers today (apparently someone at Disney thought that things were moving too slowly), the second one seems to have all the same footage as the first one plus a nice big intro with Alice’s backstory.

This is a gloriously good trailer. I was actually quite tired of the teaser soon after I saw it, I love Johnny Depp and the character of the Mad Hatter, but there are so many other characters I wanted to see. (Also that line about being Mad as a Hatter makes no sense). This trailer is all kinds of awesome. All the animals look great. We saw the White Rabbit before, but we hadn’t seen the March Hare or the Dormouse, they all look suitably abused and ragged. And Helena Bonham Carter looks great too, I didn’t think I’d get used to the whole big head thing so easily. It’s quite obvious that Tim Burton plays favorites with his cast, having both Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp in almost all of his movies, he still casts them quite well. He knows what he’s doing even if it doesn’t always look like it. I’m also enjoying Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, she looks appropriately crazy herself. And Mia Wasikowska will be terrific, she is a great actress hopefully she doesn’t grow up all ugly or anything. I could go on forever about this cast, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas; not to mention the voice cast, Christopher Lee, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry. It’s going to be too good.

I’ll be completely frank: even though I previously had my doubts about Tim Burton’s latest, the reality is that I never needed this past summer’s face-meltingly fantastic teaser trailer to get me excited about his upcoming Alice and Wonderland. No no, this image is far more than necessary:

SOLD!!! This image has three things that I unabashedly love: overly-ornate-to-the-point-of-camp costume details (it’s a gay thing), Anne Hathaway (also a gay thing), and killer red lipstick (it’s a Black Narcissus thing; so, in other words, yet another gay thing). People of a more discerning taste would likely only have their interests raised by such and image, but people of a more discerning taste would probably steer clear of such cinematic gems as Powder Blue and Orphan, so why would I want to associate with those people? Those people sound like such assholes.

All digressions aside, it’s safe to say that Alice in Wonderland’s latest trailer will have even people of a more discerning taste excited because–quite honestly–it’s as though Disney just kept throwing money at Tim Burton to ride his crazy train ’til he reached Bonkerstown, which is to say that it looks totall awesome. Just look at this beaut:

As Tracy Jordan would say: what the whaaat?!? It’s Tim Burton doing a Return-to-Oz-esque take on the world of Alice in Wonderland, but they’re adding in some Lord of the Rings for good measure and blessing us with the eccentric performance triumvirate of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter AND Crispin Glover? Oh, and it’ll be in 3-D?? CRAMAZING!!!

That all enthusiastically banshee-screeched, I’m still not having this whole business about it coming out in March, and this new trailer isn’t doing a damn bit of good to ease the situation. This means it’s probably time to upgrade my Alice in Wonderland Impatience-o-Meter from UGH to DOUBLE UGH:

Really, Disney, if the next trailer for this movie doesn’t suck at least a little, I may have to TRIPLE UGH, and you wouldn’t like me when I TRIPLE UGH.

Coming to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D™ on March 5, 2010, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an epic 3D fantasy adventure starring JOHNNY DEPP as the Mad Hatter and MIA WASIKOWSKA as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.

Obviously by the description this is not the same old Alice in Wonderland that was expected. Alice has returned and apparently by the end seems to be a warrior or “champion” as the White Queen (portrayed by Anne Hathaway) refers to her. I personally am a FREAK for all things Alice so this new imagining looks amazing!

Sinopsis:

A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker’s distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman.

When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them. –© Focus Features

Whilst I impatiently wait for my Christmas pre-order of Pandorum, I thought I should review the high

Whilst I impatiently wait for my Christmas pre-order of Pandorum, I thought I should review the highly anticipated ‘9‘, directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton. Which subsequently brings me to my first point. Many people thought that this was a direct piece of work from Burton, meaning they thought he was directing. Unfortunately that isn’t the case and as a result, many individuals were slightly disappointed by the film primarily due to the shoes which Acker, never in fact had to fill.

It is fair to admit, however that Acker did an amazing job considering ‘9‘ is his first feature-length film in which he played the role of director. Acker, who may be known for his CG animation in ‘Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King‘, took the role on head first and came out with some surprising results. Astonishingly, something that no one truly appreciated was the script, although to be fair, it was not that entirely illustrious and because of that, the actors voices weren’t really appreciated also. On the other hand, 9 proved positive amongst critics for it’s CGI.

The plot, whilst fairly original, lies within a post-apocalyptic world where the only questionable living things are a series of 9, doll-like creatures who are referred to only by number. It’s safe to say that this has hardly be attempted before, with a pretty impressive execution at that, but despite all this, I found the way the film was made less favourable. For a start, even though I severely enjoyed the trailer for ‘9′ I didn’t expect the quality of the CGI of the characters to be as it was. The landscapes and lighting on the other hand, were genius with an impressive amount of detail. After re-watching the film it appeared that the simplified CGI wasn’t so much as a bad thing as it was good, not being constantly distracted from the character profiles, or plot line, or the film score allowed me to focus especially on those things. Whether this was intended or not, I was still moved by the 79 minutes of film.

As I already mentioned the film score, I can say that it is uniquely poignant and similarly nonchalant, as if the score doesn’t need to live up to the film, as if in fact, the other way around. In some ways it’s similar to ‘‘The Dark Knight’s‘ score, in my mind, but during the actions scenes, it’s some of the better compilations I have ever heard; if you can comprehend a mixture of the awesomesauce of ‘Star Wars‘ and some random epic film with an equally representative epic score, then you’ll have a measurement of what I’m referring to. Kudos to Danny Elfman who pulls off yet another amazing soundtrack, only on the action part however, Deborah Lurie was brought in for the more orchestral sounds and her luscious work pulls you in from the start. Admittedly, it did take me re-watches to fully appreciate the entire score, as I do with many of the films I review, I re-watch them to focus on different aspects of its creation. Quality over quantity, right? Overall the film was rather good, however if you’re looking for a Tim Burton experience, this isn’t it.

9 (Estados Unidos 2.009, 83 Minutos, Ciencia Ficción) Dirección: Shane Acker. Guión: Pamela Pettler.

9 (Estados Unidos 2.009, 83 Minutos, Ciencia Ficción)
Dirección: Shane Acker.
Guión: Pamela Pettler.
Voces: Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover.
