Highlights of my first Critical Mass:
I ran into a bike cop. Head first. He asks me if I was OK, then looks at me with a straight face
and says “Really? I MEAN REALLY?”
Also, flat, about 10 miles in. Thank you Eric. You saved my night. Twice. However, while fixing my flat, I missed
riding through department stores at the mall.
Thirty miles total, top speed 36, fucking awesome kick ass alleycat scramble without a prize at the end. Way to make that
Leader frame look good. Fucking hipsters. Could have been worse.
-10 for the locals that drove there.

Consensus:
“San Diego Critical Mass”= proof bikes are a viable means of looking cool.
“Critical Pass”= pathetic reason to drive somewhere to unload your car to sit around while everyone is
gone riding to drink beer. You drove for this?!
“Nice bike”= you’re hot, and kicking my ass on this hill.

Yesterday I went to the Chris Carlsson meeting in Copenhagen, and it turned out to be a good one. All (three) speakers were engaged in the climate issue, and questioned the importance of COP15. Especially Chris Carlsson had some interesting views concerning peoples power. How do we turn the capitalism around, and could we all live in a “Burning Man”-society ?

Well, I won’t be discussing these issues deeply now this early in the morning, but I’d like to mention that I ended up buying two of Carlssons books. The new “Nowtopia” and “Critical Mass: Bicycling’s Defiant Celebration”.

I’ll probably comment on some of the bicycle related issues in these books later on, but for now you can check out the links or go get them in a bookstore.

I’ve earlier on gotten some arguments against critical mass as an effective instrument, but I’d still like to give the idea a chance. (Carlssons book might help me on the way.)

Any suggestions on different approaches towards getting to a bicycle-friendly society are absolutely very welcome…

Manda bala Pasqua, estamos contigo.

White box sound system – it’s not blessed in the looks the department, but in terms of sound quality and volume for the cost, weight and size it ain’t too shabby.

4x Infinity coax speakers in foamboard construction. Show with 12v SLA battery (5Ah 12v) connected via Anderson Powerpole connector and inline blade fuse (10A)

Critical Mass London hit the streets on 30th October 2009, with about 4 sound systems including this one. There was the big “Pedals” or “Son of Pedals” rig, another smaller trailer system, and a another which looked like some domestic house speakers hanging from a front rack. There may have been others but I would easily miss them as I’m generally trying to avoid other systems and the resulting sound-clash.

Playlist

We opted for the easy life this time and stuck near the front during the ride. Blasting off with General Midi’s ”Audio Assault” seemed to go down well soon after departure, riding along York Road towards Westminster Bridge. Tunes came via the excellent Spotify application for iPhone, the only snag was that there is no EQ function within the application. Normally I’d reduce the bass to prevent distortion at the highest volue – like when playing from the normal ipod function, but this just wasn’t possible. The approximate play list from that evening is also available.

Box Modifications

As mention in a previous post, I upgraded the amp from a 41hz.com 2x 25w “Amp6” to a 4×50w “Amp9” kit, which really added some oompf. Only problem was that the existing heatsink wasn’t enough so I carried out two modifications at once. First was to trim the back ‘corner’ (furthest from the speakers), this was necessary as the box was slightly too long and it would dig into the back of the bike saddle.

New heat sink

Secondly was to change the heat sink to something built for the purpose. This was fairly straightforward as (as before) the heat sink was pushed through the side wall with the amp simply bolted to the flat piece on the other side. In effect it’s not attached to the box, just trapped from both sides. With the new heat sink, the amp no longer overheats, and runs very very cool indeed. Going full tilt there is a bit of bass distortion, but I’m not sure if that’s supply voltage clipping or the speakers themselves.

Possible changes

I might run at 24v instead of 12v to give more “headroom” to the amp. I’m fairly sure that amp itself may clip due to not being able to exceed the input voltage on it’s outputs, rather than from an internal power limitation. If correct, this would stop some bass distortion at high volumes. One way to test this would be to rig it up to an oscilloscope and track the input DC voltage – measured at the amp input terminals (to see potential voltage drop at high current), along with the signal-input and power-output waveforms. If the output waveform stays largely the same as the input signal waveform (especially at the peaks), then any distortion if heard will be coming from within the speaker drivers themselves. If the output waveform gets clipped-off at the peaks, it’s a supply voltage issue or, less likely, a power limitation in the amp.

Happy massing.

STORY BEHIND CRITICAL MASS The first Critical Mass ride was in September 1992 in San Francisco. Ther

STORY BEHIND CRITICAL MASS

The first Critical Mass ride was in September 1992 in San Francisco. There were 48 people. The ride increased in size by about 75% each month so that by the time 1993 came about, Critical Mass had almost 500 riders and was becoming well known among bicyclers in the city–although city officials still hadn’t registered its existence. A couple months after that people in other cities started noticing and began other Masses. Also in 1993, San Francisco police and Mayor Frank Jordan noticed us and struggled with how to deal with us. It took until June 1997, when Critical Mass was almost 5 years old, for the “new” mayor Willie Brown to make any special note of us: He proved he had no idea what we were about when he made comments that motivated the big July 1997 ride and police riot.

STORY BEHIND THE NAME

The name “Critical Mass” is taken from Ted White’s 1992 documentary film about bicycling, “Return of the Scorcher“. In the film, George Bliss describes a typical scene in China, where cyclists often cannot cross intersections because there is automobile cross-trafic and no traffic lights. Slowly, more and more cyclists amass waiting to cross the road, and when there is a sufficient number of them — a critical mass, as Bliss called it — they are able to all move together with the force of their numbers to make cross traffic yield while they cross the road.

-

Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists’ right to the road. The idea started in San Francisco in September 1992 and quickly spread to cities all over the world. This site attempts to be the most complete guide to all Critical Mass rides around the globe.

Critical Mass has a different flavor from city to city – there’s a big variety in size, respect of traffic laws (or lack thereof), interaction with motorists, and intervention by police. So if you want to know more about Critical Mass, you’ll really need to find out what your local ride is like. For those who must know more right now, here’s a link to Chicago CM, which I suppose is a “typical” CM ride, if there is such a thing.

Critical Mass has no leaders, and no central organization licenses rides. In every city that has a CM ride, some locals simply picked a date, time, and location for the ride and publicized it, and thus the ride was born.

CM is an idea and an event, not an organization. You can’t write to “Critical Mass” — certainly not by writing to me.

CM is intended to be a celebration, not an opportunity to cause trouble. Those who want to try to tie up traffic as much as possible and be confrontational with motorists are missing the point. We can assert our right to the road without being rude about it. Focus on the ride, not on the cars that also happen to be on the road.

How to Start a Critical Mass Ride

1. Understand the structure of Critical Mass.

CM has no leaders. It’s an event, not an organization. There is no national group that licenses local rides. In every city that has a CM, one or more cyclists just picked a day and time and started handing out fliers. If your city doesn’t have a CM, that’s what you’ll do. You don’t need anyone to authorize your ride. You just do it.

2. Put it into perspective.

Critical Mass can be fun, but in and of itself, Critical Mass doesn’t change anything. CM is effective only when combined with real advocacy — such as lobbying local and state governments for bike lanes and progressive legislation. If all you and your cohorts do is ride your bikes around once a month, don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

3. Decide on a recurring time, day, & starting location.

Your CM needs to happen at a consistent time and place each month so that people always know where and when it is. The last Friday of the month is traditional, but many groups have chosen other recurring days. 5:30pm is a good time for CM, because it gives people who work until 5:00 a chance to get there, while leaving enough daylight in most months for a decent ride. (Don’t try to have two times, one for months with daylight savings time and one for months without. Here in Austin we used to have the split two-time format, but even after we tried to standardize on 5:00 year-round, years later people are still confused as to whether it’s 4:30, 5:00, or 5:30.) A landmark on a university campus is a typical starting point, but consider using another public place to indicate that CM isn’t just for college kids.

4. Don’t get a permit.

When local police learn of your ride, they may insist that you get a permit, perhaps a parade permit. Don’t do it. The point of Critical Mass is that biking is a right, not a privilege. Cars don’t need permits to ride on the streets, and neither should cyclists. They may threaten to arrest you if you ride without a permit. At that point you’ll need to consider whether you’re willing to get arrested to make your point. If you’re not, and you choose not to ride or choose to get the permit, then you’ve allowed them to put cyclists in their place. It’s not an easy choice for some. (Austin CM was told it needed a permit, refused to get one, and then suffered arrests of riders. CM’ers went to court and either won their cases, or had them thrown out of court. Riders in other cities, such as NYC, suffered similar harassment but ultimate victory.) (more on why you shouldn’t get a permit)

5. What route to take.

Most CM rides don’t have a set route — they go through the central city randomly, with whoever happens to be in front leading the way. Of course, you can set a route if you want to, but don’t think that you have to.

6. Learn the traffic laws.

If your ride draws any appreciable number of riders, you can expect attention from the police. Riders may or may not choose to follow the law, but you still need to know what the law is so you know whether or not you’re breaking it. Get a copy of your local traffic laws from your state and city websites. Most states requires cyclists to obey all the same rules as cars (e.g., Stop signs & red lights). You’ll probably also be required to have a headlight after dark, and there may be limits to how many bikes abreast (side by side) you can ride. Some riders ignore laws that have no safety consequences (e.g., riding 3-abreast instead of 2-abreast).

7. Will you block traffic?

The most controversial aspect of CM is the extent to which it blocks traffic. CM’ers are fond of saying “We’re not blocking traffic, we ARE traffic!” While that’s a cute phrase, it’s obviously pretty silly. It’s like a murderer saying, “I didn’t kill that human, I *am* a human!” Just because bikes are legitimate road users doesn’t mean they don’t slow down other road users — especially when they go out of their way to do so by taking up multiple lanes.Remember that CM is supposed to be a celebration of cycling, not your opportunity to see how much inconvenience you can cause to others. It’s about asserting our right to the road, not denying others their right to the road.

Leave at least one lane open for cars. (So if you’re on a 4-lane road, take no more than 3 lanes. Except if you’re on a one-lane road, obviously you will take the whole lane.) Taking all the lanes, all the time, might be fun for you, but it certainly brings the police down on you quicker. Motorists will ring 911 off the wall with their cell phones if you block them 100%. It also doesn’t win you any friends. Are you doing CM to show motorists how much fun biking can be, or are you just trying to piss them off because it makes you feel good? Only CM riders can answer these questions for themselves. Also remember that your local laws may have a say about that (though some riders choose to ignore them).

Even if you decide that you don’t want to go overboard with taking lanes, understand that you can’t control the riders — some riders may want to take all the lanes all the time. If this is not the flavor you want for your ride, then make that clear in the fliers you make for the ride, and get other cyclists to apply gentle peer pressure when a few cyclists stray. Unfortunately if two people out of 200 decide to be jerks then your CM’s reputation will come from them rather than from the other 198. But since CM has no leaders, you can’t order anyone to ride the way you want, you can only try to encourage them.

8. Confrontation with motorists.

Harassing motorists doesn’t help anyone. You can assert your right to the road without being a dick about it. Many CM’ers make it a point to be friendly to motorists, such as smiling and waving — even smiling and waving back when motorists are honking and cursing at them. Some go even farther, handing out flowers, holding signs saying “Sorry for the delay”, or passing out fliers apologizing for the minimal once-a-month delay, and explaining why we ride. If you want to avoid confrontation with motorists, put something to that effect in the fliers you use to promote the rides.

9. Make fliers and promote the ride.

The best advertising is fliers placed directly on bicycles — you know a cyclist is going to see it. Make several strips per page to save paper. Here’s an example. (You can attach the fliers to the bike in many ways — such as squeezing the brake lever to open it, slipping in the flier, then releasing the brake lever. Or you can thread the flier between the brake & gearing cables on the top tube.)

Also put up fliers at local bike shops. If your city has local bike media (like newsletters), don’t forget to inform them as well. Set up a simple website, and let me know about your ride so I can add it to the Hub.

10. Be prepared for police intervention.

The police may or may not show up at your ride. (But if you consistently take every single traffic lane or harass motorists, then they almost certainly will.) If they show up, they may harass you for breaking traffic laws, or they may harass you even if you’re not breaking any laws. Your best defense against unreasonable police action is a video camera. (Though in some cases, police have improperly confiscated cameras and tapes.) One Austin CM’er mounted a camera to her helmet. Check out some advice about what to do if you’re stopped or arrested.

11. Get creative.

CM can be festive. Many riders wear costumes or decorate their bikes extravagantly. Use your imagination. It make the rides more fun.

Happy Riding!

The last time we did an Asylum All Ages show, Sam Delanoe of Demise Of Sanity advised me that some of their lyrics could be deemed offensive and wanted to be sure it was okay to perform them undiluted. The question was a reasonable courtesy, I thought, and I told him it was fine. Metal and punk rock is an assault on the senses. It is a kind of art in which disturbances of emotion and devices of terrorising intent are important.

As well as Demise Of Sanity this show on November 20th also features Wasted Youth, Too Many Humans, The Revolt, Clockwork Sodomy and Critical Mass. The theme of the show is Metal vs. Punk.

Two of the bands that are playing at the All Ages show, Clockwork Sodomy and Demise Of Sanity, will be performing for Kenny’s Gig 2009 at Bar Rock on Sunday 15th November. Here’s a link to the poster for that event.

Sam’s question got me wondering, is there anything a band could say within the context of their art that isn’t acceptable?

Critical Mass is a band that has apparently changed its name specifically for this date. Eddie Laffoley, a member of the band, has written about this on the Facebook page for the event. He says, “Apparently we couldn’t play the gig with the name Die Inbred so we had to change it. It wasn’t my idea to change the name, was not appropriate or some bullshit! I mean we’re not condoning incest at all, hence Die Inbred. We change it and they still aren’t fucking happy! They said that Playing With Children and I’d Tap That 3 Year Old sounded too pedophiliac.”

Seeds of the New Commons: Building the Future in the Present
Chris Carlsson in conversation with Justin Booth and Kirk Laubenstein
November, 6th 7:00 pm
Sugar City (19 Wadsworth – near Elmwwod and Allen)

Join Chris Carlsson (San Francisco-based activist, author and historian), Justin Booth (Green Options Buffalo, Buffalo Blue Bicycle) and Kirk Laubenstein (Grassroots Gardens) for a discussion on how the future is being built today, in Buffalo and beyond.

Chris Carlsson is the executive director of the multimedia history project

In his current book Nowtopia: How Pirate Programmers, Outlaw Bicyclists, and Vacant-Lot Gardeners are Inventing the Future Today, San Francisco-based activist and historian Chris Carlsson profiles practices that embody a deep challenge to the basic underpinnings of modern life, as a new ecologically driven politics emerges from below, reshaping our assumptions about science, technology, and human potential.

Justin Booth is the director and founder of Green Options Buffalo which has launched programs including Recycle-A-Bicycle, Blue Bicycle and the Commercial District Bicycle Parking Program. His focus has been on developing interventions focused upon enhancing quality of life through healthier built and natural environments.

Kirk Laubenstein is president of Grassroots Gardens, a community gardening program working with public and private sectors to revitalize neighborhoods and build quality of life through the reuse and beautification of vacant land.

This event is free and open to all ages.
