“According to a 2011 study by Complete College America, an Indiana-based nonprofit, the six-year graduation rate for full-time students is just 45.2% for low-income students, 39.9% for African Americans and 27% for students 25 or older when they enroll”

<img class="wp-image-497 " alt="Labor Department.
What does this mean? More students are dropping out of college than completing a degree program. The article states from the ” U.S Department of Labor, 34 million Americans over 25 years old have some college credit but haven’t received a diploma, a rate that grew by roughly 700,00 people over the past three years”

Dropping out of college does not only hinder your chances of furthering your education but can ultimately affect your chances of employment and long-term debt.

Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar is proud to report our scholars are graduating High School at an above rate than Troy, Albany and Schenectady average. 65% percent of our scholars go on to college and graduate with a degree. Our program targets several levels that can positively affect a child’s education; Mentoring, Tutoring, Financial Support and now housing with the recent partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

We encourage students to join an apply to fellowship & Opportunity programs to help with other aspects of education that can ultimately increase your chances of graduation.

Last night we had a successful Mentor Information Session. Albany High School Scholar students, along with their parents, tutors, and mentors all gathered for a presentation on college preparation. At Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar we are dedicated to assisting our Scholars get to and through college successfully. This is a big task that requires the help of the parents, academic coordinators, tutors, staff and most importantly the mentors. Mentors challenge the Scholars to go for bigger and better ventures, encourage them to meet their highest dreams, counsel them during the lows and highs life brings, support them on their many activities, review their academic progress, and offer life lessons. So what is a CRSAS Mentor? A CRSAS Mentor makes up all of these components, along with being confidants, advisors, and life coaches. This is what it means to be a CRSAS Mentor.

Do you think it’ll be a blast as you partner together in projects and even carpool together? As exciting as this thought may seem, only few can conquer this goal through patience and good communication! And lets not forget the common saying ‘Distance make the heart grow fonder’. What if you separate from an Ex and they ask you to assist them with employment at your workplace? You may find that you’re quick to lend a hand, and think it’ll be a wonderful experience. BUT WAIT!!! When Bill was alive and involved in the day-to-day SAS activities Mary was always by his side. After Bill passed away Mary kept an active involvement in the program, whether it was attending the annual breakfasts, the countless graduations or gathering the troops at her home at the Beverwyck. This fall Mary hosted a tea that over 75 guests attended. Mary’s passion for the SAS students never wavered. When she received a note from one of her very own scholars she couldn’t have been prouder if it was one of her own grand children. Each year Mary saw to it that every graduate went off to college with a dictionary which they always received at graduation. This years graduation will be a special tribute to all Mary has done to make all of our lives better, not only the SAS students. Following is the obituary that appeared in the paper. The next time you go to look up a word in the dictionary remember Mary’s smile and that twinkle in her eye that will never be forgotten…

On this last day of February, we take a look at the notable Michael Johnson. Johnson is the only runner to have defended his Olympic title in the 400meter, as it’s rare for runners to win twice in a row. Now a retired American sprinter, he still holds the World and Olympic record for fastest 400meter and 4 x 400meter relay, and is the only Olympic contestant to have won the 200meter and Indoor 400meter races in the same year. He’s tied in history with Carl Lewis with an accumulated 8 gold medals for most medals won by a runner in history. Yet Johnson is still considered one of the greatest long sprinters in the history of track and field, worldwide. So is Michael the world’s fastest man? You be the judge; check out the video when he Breaks the Record, and read his Story.

Although this is the last day of Black History Month 2012, there will be many more accomplishments, stories, and memories from the Black culture all around the world. So take a time out of your busy schedule to find out what’s new in the world of Black History!

On this day in 1965, Malcolm X, a powerful civil rights leader, was assassinated. Malcolm X was quite outspoken about the need for a better livelihood for African-Americans. He believed in doing all that it took to get a fair chance, even if that involved violence. What he ultimately wanted was equality for all! Soon he realized that violence doesn’t need to be an option and began to announce it to the public. Sadly, his revelation was short lived. On February 21, 1965 Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan, where he was about to deliver a speech.
This day in February 1926 marked the first “Negro History Week”, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Titled the ”Father of Black History”, Dr. Woodson wanted all to know how important African-Americans were to American & World history. He organized the annual celebration of Negro History Week, held the second week in February. In 1976 the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History, extended the week to a month-long observance.

As we enter February, we’re embracing the annual celebration of Black History in America and around the world. This day in history Azie Taylor Morton was born in 1936. As an African-American teacher, politician, and cabinet member she was not one to give up as she climbed to the top in her education and career. Check her out here.

What are you hoping to satisfy in your life? Morton was an example of what hard work and determination could lead to. We’ve heard it many times before, but the message still stands: Don’t give up on your dreams!

Capital region Sponsor-A-Scholar is proud to be CDPHP 2013 Charity of Choice recipient. CDPHP long term supporters of CRSAS will launch a year-long fundraising campaign on behalf of the organizations’ Sheridan Hollow collaboration and will begin to recruit employees to serve as student mentors and construction crew members. As nonprofits move toward more collaborations and partnerships we are pleased to accept this acknowledgment for our recent partnership in with Habitat for Humanity Capital District.

With this partnership students of families that qualify for Habitat’s homeowner program may also apply to Sponsor-A-Scholar program to access college prep support and guidance, weekly homework sessions, mentorship, and training from tenth through college.
