Been thinking about launching a new website for the Honda/Acura brand. It’d be something similar to a s3 magazine in terms of feature cars, latest news from the Honda brand and a forum for exclusive members. By exclusive, I mean you have to be voted in by the appearance of your car. Those rejected would be given a summary statement on why they weren’t accepted. In the end though, the admin would have to make the final judgment.

It’d be cool, cause we’d have t-shirts for sale, stickers, shit like that. I’d have a military style ranking system. Of course, Officer ranked members would be exclusive members, admins and mods. Monthly contests to earn a higher rank faster than getting a certain post count to unlock different areas of the forum and/or ROTM(Ride of The Month).

I have some other ideas in my head and what not. Dunno if this would be a good idea, but it would definitely keep the trashy looking cars out of the forum and all the hate. It’d make for a tighter community and all that type of neat shit.

Feel free to put your input on this if you have any, positive or negative. I don’t know jack-shit about doing something upto this caliber. Any help would be cool as well.

Enige tijd geleden kwam ik tot de conclusie dat nieuwe auto’s me eigenlijk niet meer interesseren. Toegegeven, dit is voor een groot deel te wijten aan Honda: mijn merk. De laatste jaren kwamen ze niet echt scherp uit de hoek. Het Honda DNA leek een beetje uitgewerkt.

Soichiro Honda

Honda DNA? In principe is het simpel. Honda is van origine motorfabrikant. Dit zijn lichte tweewielers, met een kleine motor. Later, vanaf de jaren vijftig, neemt Honda de stap om een motorblok niet enkel van twee maar ook van vier wielen te voorzien. Een auto dus. U raadt het al: lichte, kleine auto’s met prachtige naaimachientjes in, en als het van Soichiro Honda afhing, zelfs luchtgekoeld. En eigenlijk bleef Honda hier bijzonder trouw aan.

The Power of Dreams, een eigenheid die bij mij een onvoorwaardelijke liefde voor het merk deed ontstaan. Niet alleen de motorblokjes, maar tal van innovaties in koetswerk, interieur, ophanging, luchtweerstand. Maar ook zuinig en milieuvriendelijk, lang voor iemand notie had van klimaatopwarming trouwens.

Maar de laatste jaren…? Het leek plotseling of Honda eerst naar andere merken keek alvorens een zet te doen. Dit bracht nogal lauwe en eigenlijk minder geslaagde concepten op.  De futuristische Civic van 2005: Gewaagd. OK. En dan…? Of de Honda Accord 2008: komaan zeg. De nieuwe Jazz: Ik zie eigenlijk geen echte vooruitgang? De nieuwe CR-V: laat maar…

DNA is sterk en onvoorspelbaar. Dominante eigenschappen durven blijkbaar wel eens een generatie over te slaan. Net nu de hele auto-industrie in het slop dreigt te raken, komt er een onwaarschijnlijke opflakkering!

De Tokyo Motorshow 2009 start dit weekend. En daar zijn ze weer! Mijn DNA inclusief de hele hormonale winkel er rond begint te borrelen. Honda haalt retro concepten van stal en heeft niets of niemand nodig om te bewijzen hoe het moet.
Hybride auto’s, wie durft er nog over te zwijgen? Niemand zal u echter zeggen dat Honda de eerste Hybride wagen ooit in productie bracht. Natuurlijk lag er niemand van wakker. Vandaag zitten we er mee, en iedereen stapt gewoon mee in het rijtje.
Hybride en sportief en handgeschakeld? Nee?! Dan kan toch niet! Jawel.
Hier is hij dan: de wedergeboorte van de CR-X, de CR-Z.

En nee, niet alleen het concept van een microcoupé herleeft. En nee, niet enkel het opmerkelijk glasraampje achteraan de kofferklep wordt terug van stal gehaald. Deze cosmetisch knipogen  zijn er om te onderstrepen waar het echt om gaat. Deze CR-Z bevat exact hetzelfde DNA als de oorspronkelijk CR-X: compact, licht, snel en zuinig. Er is eigenlijk niks veranderd…

Vandaag is er nog niks geweten over hoe snel of hoe traag de CR-Z is, maar ook dat is op zich ook niet belangrijk. Het Honda DNA uit zich meer in het gevoel dan in een oorlog om cijfers. Het zit goed, ik voel het! (een mens moet vertrouwen hebben).

En dan de Honda EV-N.

Ik kan mijn tranen amper bedwingen. Misschien wat overdreven, maar dit past hierbij. De wedergeboorte van de Honda N360, het luchtgekoelde autootje waarmee menig Europeaan en Amerikaan zich destijds kapot moet gelachen hebben. Eigenlijk is het originele concept uit 1967 eveneens ongewijzigd gebleven. En toch krijg je het vandaag perfect verkocht als sociaal en politiek correct, milieuvriendelijk en innovatief.

Maar wacht even… Honda DNA, stond dat ook niet voor innovatief? Dit zijn toch gewoon schaamteloze herintroducties uit het verleden?! Inderdaad, maar de mens besloot ook niet in een keer om rechtop te lopen. De omgeving veranderde en toen zette deze evolutie zich definitief door.

Ok, so while scouring the web for some car stories, I recently came across this article:

Mixed reaction has surrounded the government’s Cash for Clunkers program, but after spending around $2.8 billion, some 700,000 new vehicles have found homes. But what got traded in? We’ve heard some horror stories, but now that the full list of executed vehicles has been released on the Cars.gov website and we’ve listed some of the oddities we found while snooping around. Many are down right hard to believe, suggesting either errors in the submission process, typos in the list or even some fudging by dealers who clunked a few vehicles that weren’t eligible. After the jump is a list of “Clunkers” that stood out. We can’t guarantee these all really went to the crusher, but they do appear on the list.

We’ve outlined the rules of the government’s Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 (CARS) program before, but we think a refresher is warranted before you browse the list below. Customers were able to bring in an old “clunker” no older than model year 1984 that got, at most, 18 mpg if they were buying a new vehicle with better mpg. That trade-in had to be in running condition and insured for at least one year prior to the trade. A rebate of $3,500-$4,500 for the trade was applied towards a new car purchase based on the difference in mpg between the old and the new vehicle. Dealers did most of the work, verifying the eligibility of the traded vehicle and seeing to it that the old cars were properly disposed of. That included disabling the engine and guaranteeing the cars were shredded before the government refunded the money.

NOTE: We find it hard to believe that many vehicles in the list below were actually destroyed through the Cash for Clunkers program, and while they may be officially on the list, their inclusion is more likely explained by an error in the submission process, typos or dealerships that managed to game the system.

Basically…. I feel very bad for a lot of these cars. Yes, I know they aren’t a form of life, but a lot of these were either classics or kind of new… for example.. a 2005 RX-8. Really? If it was in good condition, why would someone be dumb enough to trade it in. I don’t want to same people are stupid… but… people are stupid. Many people don’t know what their cars are worth. 4 MKIV Supras, which are already hard to find, were crushed? I don’t care if they were non-turbo or whatever (if they were turbo, I’d be pissed) but the fact that even the name won’t stop them from crushing the car and seizing the engine. There goes another classic: An RX-7. Really? Just even looking at the individual list makes me cringe. All of these cars contributed to the “economy getting better.” Hokay… who rights these legislation rules anyways? Seriously.

At first I thought, “Hey, this might be a good idea.” Now, after the list comes out… a big giant *facepalm* is all I can muster. I just gave myself a concussion. I blame the people who don’t know what their cars are really worth nowadays…

Just felt like ranting for the next few minutes before bed.

The 2008 model year vehicles deemed clunkers ranged from a Scion xD to 10 Mercury Grand Marquis sedans to two copies of special edition F-150 pickups, sporting 450-hp V8s and Chip Foose-designed paint jobs.

Tsk tsk… should have at least given a year restriction on the cars.

Hybrids are all the rage these days.  Trucks and SUVs can get the gas mileage of regular cars, and hybrid cars can get astounding fuel economy, greater than 40mpg.

Big flipping deal.  Such mileage was possible in non-hybrid cars 20 years ago – how soon we forget.  And this guy made some minor modifications to one of them to achieve 118mpg.  That’s no typo – one hundred eighteen miles per gallon.

This is no Insight, no Prius with Playstation controls for which drivetrain does what.  It’s a 1989 Honda CRX HF.  The CRX HF is my personal favorite economical vehicle.  It can do high 40s, even 50+, in stock form.  Yeah, it’s a two seater, but the cargo area of a CRX is great.  And being a CRX, though it has an anemic engine, it handles great and is still fun to drive.

Aside from the obvious aero mods (the “wedge” in the front and taping up all the seams on the body), he’s lowered the car and is running on very narrow snow tires for minimum rolling resistance.  He’s also taken note of Colin Chapman’s philosophy of “adding lightness” by removing non-essential interior bits.  And on top of that, Chang is a great driver.  I’ve known him from the New England motorsports scene for years.  He has great car control skills, and I suppose that applying those skills toward maximizing gas mileage rather than speed is another factor in his amazing hypermiling ability.

Admittedly, it’s tough to find a stock CRX HF these days.  Most of them have rusted out.  What few remain are extremely popular candidates for monster engine swaps.  The HF is the lightest of all CRXs, a mere 1800lbs, so dropping a big Integra engine into one makes it really fast really quick.  Still, I’d try to find a relatively rust free example with its stock motor if I was looking for an economical commuter car.  Rather than a $22,000 Prius, I could drop $2200 into a CRX HF and have a darn nice car that would be more fun get BETTER gas mileage.

They don’t make them like they used to…

Saturday’s Wall Street Journal carried a story (subscription required) on the potential for proposed new CFTC rules to restrict issuance of shares of commodity ETFs.   The withdrawal of earlier grants of rule exemptions has already led certain ETFs to suspend new share issuance.  As the Journal story notes, this has driven UNG, the natural gas ETF, to trade to a 16% premium to net asset value. 

There is clearly an increased focus at the CFTC in protecting market integrity through he imposition of position limits, rules which restrict the amount of interest in a market for any non-commercial entity.  To date, most of the truly effective ways of implementing this (e.g., extending the restrictions to the OTC swap market and international regulatory coordination) are still on the drawing board.  However, if the CFTC does move forward in this direction there will be significant investment implications.

While the Wall Street Journal focused on the loss of investment opportunities, this is not necessarily so.  From a trading perspective, demand for a commodity ETF whose new issuance has become restricted might offer existing shareholders the opportunity for valuation expansion similar to what has already happened with UNG.  But such premiums are fickle and fleeting.  Investors with long memories may recall the spectacular valuation expansion of the closed-end Germany fund whose market price soared to double its net asset value in early 1990 in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  Then, as likely now, such premiums are unsustainable as lookalike products flood the market with new supply, or investors assess the risks created by such premiums.  For ETFs this is particularly problematic, since one of the key selling points of this structure is the elimination of discount/premium valuation worries. 

The most likely long-term outcome of any robust CFTC position limits will be a reevaluation of the entire commodity-as-asset-class story at both the retail and institutional levels.  As noted in an earlier post, this has always been a suspect concept, more a creation of Wall Street’s salesmanship than reality.  Those same product pushers are likely to rediscover that which has always been true — certain commodity related equities offer similar or superior portfolio characteristics to the underlying commodities. 

In this regulatory scenario, we may well witness a surge of interest in commodity related equities, assuming of course that the bullish case for commodity prices (primarily emerging market demand and weak dollar) remains intact.  Morgan Stanley already created an index of 20 commodity related equities: AA, ABX, ADM, APA, APC, BHI, BHP, CAG, DVN, FCX, GG, HES, IP, MRO, NEM, POT, SLB, TSN, WY, X.  Such names may benefit not only from generic interest in commodity related equities, but from specific products, yet-to-be-created, that are linked to this or similar indices. 

Interest in energy-linked stocks both on individual merit and as part of packaged index vehicles may well lead the way.  Contrary to the claims of the marketers of futures-linked product, energy stock indices correlate well to energy prices, provided you use the right index, such as the Dow Jones U.S. Oil Equipment, Services & Distribution Index.  Another  index that correlates well to energy prices, the Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas Producers Index already has an ETF (the i-Share, ticker IEO). 

Strict CFTC limits will indeed close off some avenues for investors.  Those funds have been sitting in markets ill-designed for such purposes (see the dangers of this here).  However, this will also open the door for inflows into appropriate vehicles in the equity markets, which were designed for just such investments.  Investors who can look beyond any new restrictions will recognize some new opportunities.
