Right now I am in the middle of a terrible string of luck.  Lately, I have been taking blow after blow and see no end to the ferocious beat down being delivered by the State of Illinois.  I am going to attempt to explain what has my boxers bunched up right now and I hope it makes sense. 

This is a long post and I apologize for the length.  I feel better to have laid my thoughts down in this post. 

Backstory:  My wife and I have three cars.  When I met her she owned a 99 Hyundai Elantra.  After I moved in with her my car died, so we bought me a 99 Chevy Prism.  Our cars were small and did well.  Last November we decided to get the wife a new Hyundai Santa Fe (SUV).  The dealer wanted to offer us 50.00 for her Elantra, and I told him to take his 50 bucks and stick it somewhere.  We kept the car since we have a spot for a third vehicle at our home.  

Strategy behind keeping Elantra:  Since we had just bought a very expensive SUV, we decided that I would drive my 99 Prism until it died.  When that happened, I would still have the 99 Elantra to drive until it died, thus we would be saving money on car payments since both cars have been paid off since 2005.  We are in no position to take on another car payment of 300 or more a month at this moment in time.   

Asspain:  So, here’s where this whole story comes together.  On November 5th, I was driving home from my regular Thursday night pool league after a few beers.  I got pulled over.  That was a completely scary moment.  Yes, I had a few beers, and No I was not in any way above the legal limit to drive.  We are talking three beers over the course of 5 hours.  Anyway, the reason the officer pulled me over was because my vehicle registration had expired in October.  Typically my wife gives me the new sticker every year and the extent of my involvment is simply applying said sticker to the plates.  I informed the officer that my wife typically handles and she must have forgotten to give me the new sticker.  Apparently she hadn’t handled it because his magical computer showed that we had not renewed registration.  I was given a ticket with a November 30th court date and was told if I had renewed before then I would not have to pay the fine.  No big deal, I thought at the time.

The next day I told my wife about this, to which she asked me if I had taken my car to the Illinois Vehicle Emissions testing station yet.  I vaguely remember her telling me to do that no less than 5 times.  No, was my response and she told me that Illinois would not let me renew registration on my vehicle until I passed the Emissions test.  Alrighty, off to the emissions testing station I went that day.  I pull into the station, they hook something up to my car, and I am told that my 99 prism has failed and I am rudely told I have to take the vehicle to a mechanic to have whatever is wrong with it fixed.  I have a few choice words I would use at this moment to describe my feelings about the state emissions test but i’ll save that for later.  So, I take my car to a mechanic and it’s going to cost me no less than 700 dollars to replace the catalytic converter.  This is a 10 year old car with 180,000 miles.  Do I really want to drop 700 on this car?  The mechanic did a overall check and told me it was in great shape and forsees in his magic ball that the only other thing that I will need to have done on this car in the next two years is a belt replacement.  I chose not to have him do the repair yet because I had an ace up my sleeve.  The Hyundai Elantra. 

Double Asspain:  The 99 Hyundai Elantra has sat outside in the cold through last years harsh winter and still sits there.  I have driven it no more than two times.  It did go on loan with my younger brother when he flew in for his Wedding in July, so it did get use for three days then.  I did a quick check and to my disappointment the registration had expired on the Elantra back in September.  Let me guess, I have to take this vehicle to the emissions station to have it tested before we can renew?  Correct. 

I drive the car a bit first to make sure it is safe.  Filled the tires, put new oil in it, added some fuel line conditioner and checked all fluids.  It worked just fine once all the kinks were worked out.  Just like my prism, there was the check engine light on which worried me a bit, but at 175,000 miles one would expect a check engine light.  Instead of it reading “check engine”, it should say “drive at your own risk, this car is old”.   Off to the emissions testing station I went to pass the test and renew registration on this vehicle until I had an extra 700.00 laying around to fix the prism.  I pulled into the testing station, waited with a smile to pass only to be told by the air team guy that this vehicle also has failed.  Double whammy. 

I spoke with the mechanic and told  him that I would be picking up my prism without the work being done and I would drop off the Elantra with the hopes that it wasn’t a 700 fix.  Luckily is was only 150.00 and the Elantra should pass now that repair was done.  I picked up the Elantra two nights ago with the repairs done and thought all was good in the world.

Which brings me to yesterday morning.  I have to drive the Elantra for two days before I can have it rechecked by the mechanic to ensure that it will pass the emissions test.  So, with my first morning commute to the office with the newly repaired Elantra I drive for 10 minutes and decided to crack the window a bit.  As soon as I pushed the window down button, the entire window fell of the track and dropped all the way into the door.  So there I was driving this car in 40 degree temps for 45 minutes with the drivers side window all the way down.  Awesome.  I parked in the garage at work and sulked for the day.  How much will this cost I wonder? 

So, after a chilly drive home last night, I decided that I might be smart enough to fix it myself.  Maybe save some money.  Big mistake.  Have you ever taken the side panel off of a door before?  Don’t do it.  I had many years ago when I was in my early 20’s and it took me more than 10 years to forget that I should never be allowed near a car with tools.   Outside of replacing a car battery, head light, or rear light bulb, I shouldn’t even think about it.  Especially on a foreign car.

So…this morning, after picking the car up from the mechanic no less than 36 hours ago, I dropped it off again with the explainer on the key envelope for early drop offs:  “Front window is broke or off track, I tried to fix it but made things much worse, door handle and lock no longer functions as well, please call me with the cost to repair”.  I tried blaming my wife for letting me attempt to fix it myself.  She had none of that. 

Triple Asspain:  At this point I am ready to drive the Elantra into a lake and call it a day.  Other than the fact that I just dumped 150.00 into it two days ago, I don’t want to get rid of it.  Honestly, I would just park the Elantra back outside and have my Prism fixed knowing what I know now, but the problem is that the Elantra no longer has a front drivers side window.  What, am I going to put plastic and duct tape over the window and leave it in my drive way?  No, I am not that ghetto.  So, here I sit clinching my buttocks waiting for the phone call to come telling me that I have to pay four hundred or more to get the Elantra fixed.  More to come on this story. (as if it wasn’t long enough)

Oh, and through all of this, I was unable to get my registration renewed on the Prism before my November 30th court date, so I had to pay a 75.00 fine on that as well. 

Rant:  The State of Illinois and their Vehicle Emissions Requirments are in my own opinion a very pointless and corrupt process.  I can’t count the number of times I have followed a vehicle spewing forth gag worthy exhaust.  Neither the Prism or the Elantra emit anything that hurt the enviroment.  The mechanic said that the Catylitic converter is not really bad, but beginning to go, and the Elantra had a vacuum leak in the evap system (purge solenoid) which wasn’t a big issue either.  Seriously. This is BS that has and will end up costing me a total of 1500.00 to get both cars pass this stupid vehicle emissions test which I now fully believe was put into law by corrupt politicians that were greased by mechanics. Conspiracy theory?  I don’t see it as so, just a law that requires cars to be fixed when they are actually doing very little to no harm on the environment.  The fact that registration on both vehicles are being held hostage until I drop this kind of money with the mechanic’s make me downright ill.  I will not bow down to this corruption and buy a new vehicle as I am sure this whole emissions process was designed to motivate vehicle owners to do.

Another creation by John Waters, Cry Baby is the tribute the bizarre director pays to all those teenage movies in the 50’s  recovering  high schools and Romeo and Juliet’s  romances in West Side Story style, as usual, from a very exaggerated perspective making fun of all that crap.

Allison (Amy Locane)  is a good and beautiful girl whose life has always been too perfect , too “square”, enjoying a social position, always escorted by her perfect boyfriend. During a vaccination campaign, her eyes meet Cry-Baby Walker’s (Johnny Depp), obviously is love at first sight, but he’s a drape, a rebel, and she’s not supposed to be with him. Despite the differences, Allison, tired of being good, will surrender to his charm, but the relationship won’t be accepted by her social environment and his boyfriend will plan revenge on the drapes, causing fatal consequences which will lock Cry-Baby into a Juvenile Estate Penitentiary, up to he’s 21.

Will he be able to escape from being imprisoned, will Allison wait for him or she’ll be back to her former situation? Many questions are answered at  the rhythm of classic rock n’ roll, with hilarious lyrics and dancing performances.

Cry-Baby would be definitely considered a musical film, for music presence is constant. On one hand the proper performances at the talent show, or the jamboree, and on the other the musical scenes, with resemblance to Grease or Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock, with a super young Johnny Depp locked in prison, full of frustration and rage. Lyrics are hilarious, making you giggle most of time and soundtrack is pretty cool.

What about the cast? From Johnny Depp in his hottest taking off  from 21 Jump Street  to Willem Defoe as the penitentiary guard, including porn super goddess Tracy Lords in pin-up rockin’ style, Iggy Pop full of dirt in his most Southern attitude, and experienced and established Polly Bergen as the adorable grandma of virgin-like Amy Locane. And of course, John Waters’ mojo pins, Patricia Hearst and Mink Stole. Especial mention to Hatchet-Face, a super albino woman characterized as scary and disgusting as possible, if I pass by that freak on the street I would get the fuck out asap.

Thus, in Cry-Baby you find a cocktail of classic teenage love movie, with comedy, musical performances, and ridiculous and exaggerated acting and dialogues, that make you laugh despite you reckon  that  the story is just crap. Still, you can have a good time.

Back to where I was, there’s a girl named Mollee. While I’d like to pick on the spelling of her name there’s something else about her that..caught my eye..

Mollee reminds me of Hatchet Face in Cry Baby. She’s a sweet girl, sure..so was Hatchet Face.  Blame the make-up people, not me.

I believe that Cry-Baby is my first experience watching a John Waters movie from beginning to end. Known for his subversive movies, I was hesitant watching this film. I didn’t know how what to expect. I was surprised that this movie was more of a musical that anything else. It doesn’t that this is a good movie.

Taking place in Baltimore 1954, Wade Walter aka Cry Baby (Johnny Depp) and Allison Vernon-Williams (Amy Locane) meet each other while getting a vaccination at the gym. They like each other but it like John Waters’ version of “Romeo and Juliet”. Cry-Baby is a Drape, one of the juvenile delinquents of the town. However, Alison is a Square through and through with her boyfriend Baldwin (Stephen Mailer) and grandmother (Polly Bergen) try to reel her inner drape back.

The two factions clash as Cry-Baby wants to participate in the RSVP talent contest at Mrs. Vernon-Williams’ charm school. Cry-Baby crashes the contest to whisk Alison away on his brand new motorcycle from his grandmother, Ramona Rickettes (Susan Tyrrell), grandmother and uncle Belvedere (Iggy Pop) to his favorite drape hang out, Turkey Point.

Alison meets the rest of Cry-Baby crew that doesn’t tale a liking to the outsider. There is Cry-Baby’s badass pregnant sister Pepper (Ricki Lake), the vixen Wanda (Traci Lords) and the couple Milton (Darren E. Burrows) and Hatchet-Face (Kim McGuire). There is a Drape wannabe Lenora (Kim Webb) has a crush on Cry-Baby, she is the romantic rival.

At the Drapes’ own talent show, Jukebox Jamboree showed Alison what Cry-Baby can do with his voice, hips and electric guitar-playing. Alison is torn between her duties of being with her Square boyfriend, Baldwin or have a wild ride with Cry-Baby.

The movie was short. It felt rushed. It was shallow. Pop in and out. That’s it. I wasn’t invested in the character long enough to care about them. The musical sequences were very entertaining. That’s all.

Judgment: I heard that there is a Broadway musical of this movie, I’d rather see that.

I can say from my experience working with them, they’re probably the most amazing people that you’ll ever meet in a lifetime – hard-working, determined, down to earth, humble, loves life and God, and the greatest friends that I could ever have. They deserve the best BEST in world. I’m pretty sure that they’ll be rocking all the stages in the whole world pretty soon. You heard it from me! Holler! Lol!

I can’t say that I personally know her but I can say that she’s one of my friends that I won’t forget. What I do know that she’s passionate about what she does. She’s all about music, all about expressing her love for music, and you can see it from her performances, and the vibes you would get. Woo! You would just know that she’s just doing the way she’s supposed to do. She’s one of the sweetest person that you’ll ever meet!

You see them at shows.

They are the kids in the noisy patterns, with eighties themes. Their T-shirts are emblazoned with ironic, nonsensical phrases. They have hairstyles that can only be described as androgynous that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. They are probably tattooed, maybe gay. They read Black Book, Nylon, and the Styles section of the New York Times and complain often. The drink coffee by the tub, smoke cigarettes, and drink PBR. They listen to bands that you’ve never heard of or claim to be in a band and they’re so called band rehearsals consist of drinking PBR smoking cigarettes and choosing outfits for next show that their band will never get to play.  They have tools that they comminucate with such as ipods and cell phones and they seem to always be IM-ing each other all day and text-messaging each all night. It seems like that have tuned everything that isn’t in their world out.

They are the ones that think that they are being “special” and “unique” for liking some underground bullshit no one else cares about. They look down on people who don’t know anything about “indie culture”, because that’s the only thing they know anything about. They are the “effortless cool” with an urban bohemian look complete with keffiyeh / shemagh (also known as an Arabic scarf). Their style is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater to them specifically.

 They are a subculture of men and women in their 20’s and 30’s that are a year or two out of college. They are into independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, art and indie rock that claim to dislike all that is mainstream, which is usually reflected in their taste of music and how quickly they’ll shun a group the moment they end up on a soundtrack, TV commercial / show or on the radio; unless they were listening to that group “before they hit it big”.

The have a dislike for everything corporate but will have no problem working at Starbucks, Gap or Pottery Barn or living off parent’s money and spend a great deal of it to look like they don’t have any.

They are hipsters and they are not like *our generation. Formerly hostile subcultures — yesteryear’s punks and hippies and snowboarders  do not now welcome the hipsters.

Question is: How to you market your music to this truly “blank genration”?  One answer: If you can’t beat them, join them.

Product seeding is a cheap way to advertise and it’s what we use to market on-line.  It’s similar to celebrity endorsements, evangelist marketing, or grassroots/ viral way of planting a product so that it can be seen by important or influential people. An example of product seeding would be getting a celebrity to wear a certain hat or to hold a particular drink when being photographed or interviewed. Product seeding also can be done in smaller ways online, such as visiting forums, tweeting,  updating statuses on facebook and myspace, IMing, texting, and other forms of on-line viral marketing to get your music out.

Knowing the technology within this realm of marketing your music is something that you have to teach yourself and stay on top of.  Something as simple as using a small feature of YOUTUBE to get your music out can even help you build a following without people even knowing the wiser that they are being marketed to.  As an example, my youngest son and I were in the computer room and he proudly told me that the video that he posted for his “band” has recieved over 12,000 hits. How can this be, I thought to myself, they are a kid band, never have played out before and spend all the time in our garage arguing with each other.  His “band” consist of two other kids that can barely play their instruments and have never played out before, although I will admit, they are eager.  The video is simple, they set up a camera in our garage where they practice and recorded themselves covering “Smells like Teen Spirit”—poor light, white walls, junk in the corner of the garage, piled up boxes, no effects, no nothing, no flashy lights or cuts—Just a very, very simple one-shot video of  3 kids playing a song—and over 12,000 hits compared to my band’s video, where it was professionally shot, has editing, effects, nice lighting and shot in aa cool location and yet had only recieved  652 hits. Here’s the kicker, we posted BOTH band videos up about the same time. I asked him how he managed to get 12,000 hits so fast (within a few months). His reply? Lyrics. Apparently, people troll youtube and other video sites and look for videos with lyrics in them. He told me that people “like to know what the singer is singing and learn the lyrics”. So I paid him to type in the lyrics to our song on our video and repost it. The outcome? Within a few short weeks we had 1,357 hits on the same video. Lesson learned? Always look at the small features that appilcations and websites offer and use them to thier fullest extent.

Word -of-mouth is very important with product seeding, that should go without saying; but we also rely on texting, IMing and updating social websites statuses as much as possible without being annoying and asking our friends to resend. Blogging as well as leaving replies on blogs is another effective way to get the music out. We use blogger.com and blogged.com (as well as WordPress.com) to keep an on-line journal of the band’s moves and happenings–not to mention myspace, facebook, twitter and other social networking websites.

In short, we use what hipsters use to get our music out. And we’re learning more everyday, the list of product seeding with today’s technology could go on, and on, and on, and on. Since we use the “tools” of the hipster market, does that make us hipsters or just hip?

I hate men who weep in public. Even if one is in weepable circumstances, as a man  he should either seek privacy to compose himself or stifle it at all costs. I appreciate the Late Rajiv Gandhi for this trait that he showed at the cremation time of Mrs.Indira Gandhi. One could sense the impending lachrymal explosion kept under control.

I recently saw the Chief Minister of Karnataka weeping in front of the camera and i should say, it did not look good at all on him. It did not have the vulnerability of a woman or a child, nor did it have the self-righteous shedding of tears of an innocent man. I remember Kapil Dev the cricketer shedding copious tears in front of the camera. The cricket lovers of the country were divided- some said that he had expressed his feminine side when accused falsely. Others, had a different take on it. Some even attributed a serious fraud being enacted for eliciting undeserved sympathy! Be that as it may, i was not in the least impressed. A man who had shown aggression against the Pakistanis in Pakistan soil, merely for earning the sympathy of the viewers had to weep is unbelievable. In any case he CRIED and fell off the pedestal. For what reason, is IMMATERIAL. He was not in such a helpless state (after all Azharuddin maintained his poise!!), as we could gather from hindsight.

But the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr.Yediurappa crying puts the whole state in bad light. The circumstances that led him to cry, makes it worse still. A few good men with whose aid he had stitched up a stable government cannot become self-righteous all of a sudden and shed tears when they betray him. That should have been taken in his stride. But we have the MOTHER OF ALL WEEPING which was performed by another Kannadiga Mr. Deve Gowda, in the parliament as if he had become the Prime Minister of India on his own MERIT and POLITICAL support and that the poor farmer was back stabbed!!! He had failed to read that his position was similar to that of Charan Singh and Chandrashekar. So when the support goes, the incumbent goes.

The worse part of the whole weeping episode is the denouement, when after a few days he lifts his hand in solidarity with the same Reddy brothers whom Mr.Yediurappa had accused of back stabbing. Like Mrs.Gandhi is supposed to have said, “IT HELPS TO HAVE A THICK SKIN IN POLITICS.” But as an Indian i have the weeping chief minister etched in my memory, with such a vivid memory, how can i respect Mr.Yediurappa?

Sir, what is it that makes you think I want to sit here and listen to you bitch  about your free breakfast not having eggs for 10 minutes?  Frankly, I don’t give a flying shit what you think our breakfast should have.  If you are that picky about your morning meal and you think you need to have eggs everyday maybe you should go to a restaurant and PAY for what you WANT.

Coming to me with that smug look on your face and talking down to me as if you are so much better than me does not make me feel any sympathy for you and your egg dilemma.  All it does is make me want to fucking lay your ass out.  You obviously planned out your whole “I need eggs” production so you could look cool in front of your friend.  It didn’t work.  It only made you look like a CUNT.

“I done traveled all over the world and I ain’t never seen a place that didn’t serve eggs.”  Sounds like it…….

Bottom line…if you are too cheap to go out and buy breakfast somewhere, you better just be happy with the free breakfast (which I think is pretty nice) that we give you!

So, to the guy who loves his eggs so dearly—Fuck you…you little fucking prick.

Many of you reading this have probably never even heard of Jim Furyk. He is a relatively obscure PGA Touring Professional with a caddy that is generally considered more famous than he. However Jim is one of the most successful PGA Tour Players of all time. This past year he ranked #4 in the Fed Ex Cup Standings and he is currently ranked #10 in the world rankings and #4 in all time PGA Tour Earnings at over $40Million.

So why is he Way Cooler than Allen Iverson?

Because Jim Furyk is currently not eligible for next years Ryder Cup, yet he is not complaining to the world that we should “Go look at his resume” to see that he should be on the Ryder Cup Team. Unlike the cry baby Allen Iverson, Jim knows his place in the world and he knows that you are only as good as your last shot. Even though he is ranked 4th in career earnings he knows that he will have to go out and prove himself again next year or he will not make the Ryder Cup team.

Now back to why Allen Iverson is not nearly as cool as Jim Furyk.

As many of you know Allen Iverson was a disaster with the Detroit Pistons and he moved south to the Memphis Grizzlies to destroy yet another team. And guess what…

The sweat had barely dried off his braids following his first game in a Grizzlies uniform last night, and Iverson was already mad about the amount of playing time he received in the overtime loss to the Kings.

After missing the first three games while recovering from a partial right hamstring tear, Iverson played only briefly as a reserve, scoring 11 points in less than 18 minutes (and 1 assist vs. 2 turnovers and ZERO rebounds, way to hussle). He said he had no problems with his hamstring, but had a big problem with the playing time he got from coach Lionel Hollins.

“Go look at my resume and that will show you that I’m not a sixth man,”

Iverson said. “I don’t think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It’s just who I am. I don’t want to change what gave me all the success that I’ve had since I’ve been in this league.”

It is difficult to understand how anyone on the face of the planet could consider Fox News to be a neutral arbiter, but they seem angry that the White House pointed out the painfully obvious.  The only problem with such whining?  Well, there was the actions of the previous administration towards those in the news to consider.

And from 2006 -

So locking up reporters for daring to cross the Bush White House was of course a crime, but for the current administration to point out that Fox News is about as balanced as a one-legged drunk person that has been struck on their head with a mallet, well that is just going too far.

And then of course there was the brilliant move by Glenn Beck calling the President a racist, and people wonder why the White House doesn’t seem to want to put up with their crap anymore.

Eu a-ma-va a Kimberly, a Power Ranger rosa! Sempre queria ser ela nas brincadeiras hahahahaha Na esquina da minha casa tinha uma banca, e eu ia lá toda semana e comprava pencas de revistinha dos Power Rangers e teve uma época que a tia deixava eu assinar e pagar depois…um dia a banca fechou e nunca mais abriu, e eu nunca paguei oq devia pra tia, fiquei por um tempão achando que ela tinha falido por minha causa! haha truqueirinha

Eu lembro a 1ª vez que vi o CD das Spice, foi na Mesbla! Na 4ª série, eu fiz um “fã clube oficial” só com membros da minha sala, e a gente se reúniu duas vezes na minha casa pra contar os bafões das Spices hahah  Tenho duas passagens dramaticas com as Spices, quando elas vieram pro Brasil e eu fiquei sabendo pelo programa “Em Nome Do Amor”, no SBT, que uma menininha escreveu uma carta por Silvio Santos pedindo pra conhecer as Spice e ele a levou até Manaus pra conhece-las…nunca senti tanta inveja e ódio na minha vida! E a outra foi quando a Sandra Annemberg disse no Jornal Hoje que as Spice tinham acabado! FOI UM CHOQUE! Fiquei trancado no quarto umas 5 horas, minha mãe teve que ligar pra uma prima minha vir aqui em casa conversar comigo hahahaha

Viajar pro Paraguai era a melhor coisa na minha vida, eu voltava CHEIO de Playmobils novos!! Uma vez o Extra fez uma promoção de Dia das Crianças: que quem comprasse brinquedos por la, ganharia uma foto…tsá, eu comprei e ganhei! Só que eu tinha acabado de sair do dentista e tinha levado anestesia e tava com a boca torta, resultado: sai toda torta na foto, e guardo ela até hj hahah

Eu era pobrinha e não tinha mutchi canal, então me jogava na programação da TV Cultura, que antigamente era incrível!! Eu A-M-A-V-A- Confissões de Adolescente, Castelo Ratimbum, Ra Tim Bum, Glub Glub, X Tudo, Doug, TimTim e O Mundo de Beakman!!!! Era tão bom, passava um seguidinho do outro, eu nunca tinha tempo pra fazer as tarefas escolares, por isso que na 5ª série eu entrei pro reforço escolar e só sai de lá quando entrei pra faculdade  hahaha trevoso

Definitivamente esse foi um dos filmes que eu mais assisti em toda minha vida! Eu e minha irmã faziamos as freaks e todo final de semana a gente ia na Hellios Video locar Cry Baby!! Sério, era sagrado, todo sexta a gente locava e só devolvia segunda depois de ter assistido umas 5vezes! Nunca mais achei pra locar, e eu não lembro de quase nada do filme! BRISA BOA hahahah

Dear readers,

Have I told you already how much I love “Cry-Baby”? Well, I love that movie. I rarely laugh out loud during movies, and I did during “Cry-Baby”.

This weekend has been a writing spree. But now school is back in session and all I can think of is how much I want to be back on a set, or at home writing. This is a wanderlust of a different kind. I can’t wait I can’t wait I can’t wait. Ugh, how many times have you heard me say this? It must be true then, if this feeling keeps returning.

Is this what culture shock is like? When one person experiences something either exceptionally awesome or traumatic, and they can’t connect to anyone about it? When it seems like everyone else is stuck in the mundane while you are going through something super dee duper or horreeebluh.

The oldish music craze continues. Today it is “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. My youngest sister decided she’d help me start my nap this afternoon, and somehow I said “Wake me up when September ends,” and she laughed because it is October. I asked her, and she doesn’t remember the song. I can still remember when they would repeat this song on the radio over and over and over until I got sick of it. For me, it will always be connected to 9/11, probably because of all the memorials that used it. But there’s good reason for her lack of memory – it has been around practically since she was born.

Haha guess what I’m doing? NOT watching a Johnny Depp interview. Some interviewers are still…slightly obnoxious. But after this weekend, I understand what he means when he says his job is done after the shoot. Before it was like, “oh, yes…that’s just something Johnny Depp says all the time” but it’s the truth.

It’s not that life is dull, there is so much happening – too much in fact. I wonder if I will ever be this busy in my life again. A naive thought, yes, but pardon my limited life experience so far. Have you noticed the lack of photos lately? I barely have time to write posts anymore. Today I took a nap after work, which came after fall play auditions. Tomorrow I have orchestra. I have a love-hate relationship with orchestra. I hate the idea of going to yet another class, but once I’m in there playing I’m happy. Not to say I don’t check the clock every ten minutes.

In AP Lang we’re reading Into the Wild, which depresses me just thinking about it. He dies.

But, my book is the one with the movie cover on it, Emile Hirsch sitting on a bus. For me, Emile Hirsch is Speed Racer. Actually, before I saw “Speed Racer” he was “that guy from ‘Into the Wild’”. But then I opened the book and there was a picture of the real guy in front of the real bus, and I became sad again.

Also, the book was shelved under Field Guides at Barnes and Nobles??? Does that encourage imitation of his situation?

Yesterday I mentioned that I was painfully awkward. When I need to be weird I’m painfully quiet and shy, and when I need to be quiet I’m ridiculously weird. I don’t like this. But then Sushi said that I’m awkward even when I’m weird, so…I guess I’m just awkward 24/7. But it’s pretty hilarious relating my awkward situations to Sushi. It’s funny when you look back. But a first impression is a first impression. And being self-conscious is never fun.

Writing a feature screenplay is hard. I’ve been writing for three days and I’ve got ten minutes worth of my latest screenplay. Now I have to duplicate that eight more times to reach 90 minutes. Go go go!

We’ve been watching “12 Angry Men” in contemporary media. I’d already seen it twice before, and didn’t like it. But this time, I watched it in “filmmaker mode”. Haha yes I just made that up. But it really is something when you see it that way. Brilliant. Still wouldn’t watch it on a rainy day. Rainy days are for making tortured sounds as you near the end of PotC 2.

Fra le icone che hanno marcato la storia del cinema weird, spicca incontrastata la grandissima Susan Tyrrell.

Attrice solidissima e versatile, dalla carriera teatrale di grande successo, debutta nel 1971 in Shoot Out, ma è con lo splendido Fat City (1972) di John Huston che arriva la celebrità: nel film Tyrrell interpreta Ona, una disperata “mosca da bar” persa fra fallimenti e alcolismo, e la sua intensa performance le vale una nomination all’Oscar.

Dopo questo inizio “d’autore” Susan decide però di sterzare la sua carriera e, folle e determinata com’è, comincia a inanellare una serie di ruoli estremi, deliranti e talvolta smaccatamente sgradevoli. Uno dei film che hanno per sempre segnato l’immaginario weird è Forbidden Zone (1980) di Richard Elfman (fratello del celebre compositore Danny, che per l’occasione scrisse la sua prima colonna sonora), in cui Susan Tyrrell interpreta istironicamente Doris, la Regina della Sesta Dimensione, sposa di Re Fausto, un nano.

La sua personalità esuberante e sregolata la porta in seguito a interpretare Solly, la sboccata lesbica di ferro di Angel (1984) e Avenging Angel (1985). Data la sua passione per i personaggi volgari e di cattivo gusto, l’incontro con John Waters, il Duca del Trash, non poteva tardare. Diretta dal grande regista di Pink Flamingos, Susan compare nel classico cult Cry Baby (1990) nel ruolo di Ramona Rickettes, la disgustosa nonna di Johnny Depp.

All’inizio del 2000, però, una rarissima malattia del sangue la costringe, nel giro di un paio di giorni, ad avere entrambe le gambe amputate. Questo, ovviamente, non può fermare la nostra Susan – anzi per lei questo è nuovo motivo di forza espressiva, per ritagliarsi personaggi ancora più bizzarri ed estremi. Nel 2003 compare in Masked and Anonymous di Larry Charles, nel ruolo di una maga veggente.

Donna selvaggia e granitica, ousider dichiarata, buffa e bizzarra, è sempre pronta a raccontare i più sordidi retroscena di Hollywood. E resta sempre, a testa alta, la più alta incarnazione femminile del cinema weird.
