… Scientists have made what they believe to be the first sighting of an adult white orca, or killer whale.

The adult male, which they have nicknamed Iceberg, was spotted off the coast of Kamchatka in eastern Russia.

It appears to be healthy and leading a normal life in its pod.

White whales of various species are occasionally seen; but the only known white orcas have been young, including one with a rare genetic condition that died in a Canadian aquarium in 1972.

The sightings were made during a research cruise off Kamchatka by a group of Russian scientists and students, co-led by Erich Hoyt, the long-time orca scientist, conservationist and author who is now a senior research fellow with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).

Footage apparently shows adult white orca. Courtesy of Far East Russia Orcas Project

“We’ve seen another two white orcas in Russia but they’ve been young, whereas this is the first time we’ve seen a mature adult,” he told BBC News.

“It has the full two-metre-high dorsal fin of a mature male, which means it’s at least 16 years old – in fact the fin is somewhat ragged, so it might be a bit older.”

Orcas mature around the age of 15, and males can live to 50 or 60 years old, though 30 is more commonplace.

“Iceberg seems to be fully socialised; we know that these fish-eating orcas stay with their mothers for life, and as far as we can see he’s right behind his mother with presumably his brothers next to him,” said Dr Hoyt.

The cause of his unusual pigmentation is not known. The captive white orca, Chima, suffered from Chediak-Higashi syndrome, a genetic condition that causes partial albinism as well as a number of medical complications.

It is possible that an attempt may be made to take a biopsy from Iceberg; but with researchers reluctant to do so unless there is a compelling conservation reason, they are hoping instead for closer observations including a detection of eye colour. …

The latest article on Uncanny UK has a disturbing selection of three apparently true encounters with strange animal-like entities which were not only bizarre to look upon but also generated a distinctly evil atmosphere. You can read these hair-raising stories over at http://www.uncannyuk.com/893/weird-creatures-of-evil/.

The article is written by an old friend of Uncanny UK, Richard Freeman. Richard is the zoological director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology and has searched for a number of potentially real flesh and blood creatures such as the Mongolian Death Worm and the Orang Pendek. He is also very interested in supernatural, rather than merely natural, critters. This is not only borne out by his latest article on Uncanny UK but also by his new book – a collection of short horror stories inspired by these interests and by his fondness for weird fiction.

‘Green, Unpleasant, Land’ is highly recommended. Richard kindly sent me a manuscript copy, and I’ve been savouring one story at a time, on those rare occasions when I actually allow myself to relax. Not surprisingly, monsters feature strongly in Richard’s tales, including ancient dragons reborn to wreak fiery vengeance on destroyers of the land, hideous subterranean worms and a baleful basilisk accidentally bred in a laboratory. I also enjoyed his story of malevolent fairies with its knowing nod to Arthur Machen. Richard clearly loves folklore-based weird fiction as much as I do.

‘Green, Unpleasant, Land’ is a hell of an achievement and I don’t mind admitting to feeling considerable envy. I’ve been trying to write fiction again myself recently but it’s been like pulling teeth – I guess I’m too distracted with the need to get myself sorted with various projects under development post Paranormal Magazine. You really need to be able to relax and get into your characters and your stories. To have a collection of self-penned weird tales in print is a long-held ambition of mine and I offer Richard my sincere congratulations. He is now part of a long heritage of British horror writers – a genre we excel in. How lovely to have your own book alongside those of Machen, James, Blackwood and Benson!

I should also mention that the book is illustrated by the phenomenal Shaun Histed-Todd. Shaun did some highly impressive work for Paranormal Magazine and his striking illustrations complement Richard’s stories brilliantly.

‘Green, Unpleasant, Land’ is, of course, available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Unpleasant-Land-Richard-Freeman/dp/1905723857/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335003855&sr=1-1

It is one of the greatest mysteries of the deep, and its legend has outfoxed score of investigators over the generations.

Stories, pictures and rumors about a monster living below the surface of Scotland’s deepest loch go back for decades.

But it is now hoped this grainy image of a long ‘serpent-like creature’ may finally unlock the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster.

Questions: This exciting new image of has revived belief that there’s something unexplained out there

The sonar picture, that shows a large unidentified living object deep underwater, was recorded by Loch Ness boat skipper Marcus Atkinson.

The mysterious being was recorded at a depth of 75ft in the murky water and measured nearly 5ft wide.

Mr Atkinson’s sonar fish-finder device records the width of objects in the depths directly below his tourist boat every quarter of a second.

Image produced when his vessel was in the Loch’s Urquhart Bay showed a long moving object that had followed the boat for more than two minutes.

The consistent marks on Mr Atkinson’s sonar create a horizontal mass, which is not an indicator of length.

But excited Loch Ness monster experts have ruled out the ‘sighting’ being any other fish, seal or wood debris and believe it is proof of an unknown creature in the Loch.

Skipper: Martin Atkinson said he’d never seen anything like it, adding weight to previous alleged sightings such as this one (right)

The picture taken on Mr Atkinson’s mobile phone of his sonar screen, has won him first prize in the Best Nessie Sighting of The Year Award run by bookmakers William Hill.

Mr Atkinson, 43, from Fort Augustus in the Scottish Highlands, said: ‘I was dropping customers at Urquhart Castle and then got my boat out of the way of the other tour companies.

‘I moved out into the water and looked at the sonar and saw this image had appeared.

‘The device takes a reading of the depth and what is below the boat every quarter of a second and gradually builds up a picture, so it covered a time of about five minutes.

‘The object got bigger and bigger and I thought “bloody hell” and took a picture with my mobile phone.

‘There is nothing that big in the Loch. I was in shock as it looked like a big serpent, it’s amazing. You can’t fake a sonar image. I have never seen anything returned like this on the fish finder.

‘It is a bizarre shape to me. I have shown it to other experienced skippers and none of us know what it was.

Size: The sonar image potentially showing a large unidentified living object deep underwater

‘I have seen a lot of pictures in 21 years of being here but this is the most clearest image yet. Undoubtedly, there is something in the loch.’

Steve Feltham, 49, a full-time Loch Ness monster hunter said: ‘There are no animals in the loch as big as the image here, the biggest thing we see are seals which are nothing compared to this.

‘It’s also totally unexplained and can’t possibly be fish because in water 75ft down you just wouldn’t find them.

Alert: The unusual sonar image was unlike anything Loch Ness boat skipper Marcus Atkinson had seen before

‘It’s very exciting and the best evidence we have had in donkey’s years. There is usually a mundane explanation yet no one has come up with one for this.

‘It’s images like this that will keep me going with my hunt for the next 20 years.’

But other marine experts claim the mystery object may well have been algae in the water.

Dr Simon Boxall, from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, said: ‘The picture is built up slowly as the boat moves.

‘So it’s not a snap shot and thus the image is not an image of a single object unless it is very still.

‘The image shows a bloom of algae and zooplankton that would exist on what would be a thermocline.

‘Zooplankton live off this algae and reflect sound signals from echo sounders and fish finders very well.

‘They will appear as a linear “blob” on the screen, just like this.

‘This is a monster made of millions of tiny animals and plants and represents the bulk of life in the Loch.’

This will be a recurring series that technically and stylistically critiques photographs of cryptids. I will offer snarky amateur suggestions on how to sharpen up your blobsquatches. Hopefully, this will contribute to a dramatic uptick in the quality of cryptid photographic evidence, unless of course these creatures only exist in a paridollic world of ambiguous pixels.

Today’s photo: Nessie, by Richard Preston:

© Richard Preston

Context

According to STV News, Richard Preston, a landscape engineer working on the grounds of Aldourie Castle on the shores of Loch Ness in 2010, saw something strange out in the Loch. He fired off a few photos of some white bumps out in the water which were widely distributed in the UK and around the world.

“I was just walking through the castle gardens and I spotted something in the distance. When I looked closer I could clearly see the four hump-like features. I thought I’d take a picture of it, to see if there was anything in it, to see what others thought.

“I was surprised that it stayed there as long as it did. I took various shots of it before it suddenly disappeared. I literally just turned my back and it was gone.”

Now, let’s talk about the photo.

Technical (D-)
Ouch! Where to start here. The colors are over saturated, contrast is way to high, and the resolution is for shite thanks to obvious and extreme over magnification and processing of the original image. Whatever photo processing software that was used on this image is not quite up to CSI’s imaginary image manipulation technology. The point being that the “Zoom in. Now enhance.” cliche is nonsensical. In digital photos you can’t create pixel information where there isn’t any to begin with, and “enhancement” techniques actually destroy information and insert artifacts into an image. I can’t really say much beyond that; the poor quality of this shot actually makes the critique of it mercifully brief.

Stylistic (C)
Yuck. The subject is in the dead center of the frame, and there is no attempt to follow, or creatively transcend, the rule of thirds. The awful post-pressing, however, adds a slightly surreal element to the photograph that is befitting its alleged aquatic subject. Also, the autumn foliage is pretty.

Irrefutability (D)
The obvious manipulation of every other aspect of this photo makes it fairly poor evidence of a freshwater plesiosaur living in Loch Ness. The white bumps could have been intentionally added digitally, or arose from an everyday object on the lake being blasted into ambiguity through enhancement. This, or the myriad other pixelated lake-bump photos, does not help overcome the problems of a population of enormous, air breathing animals living in an isolated body of water surrounded by human civilization, without leaving a single piece of physical evidence over thousands of years.

My Serious Take
The image I posted above is obviously not the original photo taken by Richard Preston, though it is the most widely circulated around the web and in print publications. Here is the originally framed image, with the above crop indicated with by a rectangle:

© Richard Preston

And here is a second shot, taken from a slightly different position (based upon the foreground shrubs location in respect the house):

© Richard Preston

I can’t really conclude a whole lot from these shots, mostly since I can’t find them in their original resolution. However, if the widely circulated image at the top of the page is any indication of how informative they are at higher resolution, I would say they are pretty weak evidence of anything. Maybe it’s a wave. Maybe it’s a pod of albino otters. Maybe it’s Nessie. Scientifically, these photos are as useful as an anecdote, and unexplained ambiguity is proof of nothing.

Advice
Buy this:

Considering their diversity and ecological dominance of the planet, arthropods are conspicuously abs

Considering their diversity and ecological dominance of the planet, arthropods are conspicuously absent in the cryptid world. It seems most ‘serious’ cryptozoologists have a massive chordate megafauna fetish. Even other invertebrate groups have some highly notable cryptids: The mollusks have the kraken, and annelids have giant, lightning-crapping Mongolian death-worms (possibly the most awesomely-ridiculous cryptid ever)… but where are the arthropods?

Here are the sparse few examples of marine arthropod cryptids I could come up with:

Con Rit, the giant sea centipede.

Con Rít (Giant sea centipede): This obscure cryptid is the best example I found, and seems to be an amalgam of every sea serpent ever reported to have a thin, segmented body. Some eye witnesses place it at over 150 feet in length, possessing many armored segments, each with lateral projecting plates. Con Rit has allegedly been sited in many tropical waters throughout to Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indonesia, and South East Asia. Explanations of this creature’s nature range from misidentified oarfish (likely), to giant surviving Eurypterid sea scorpions (slim), or whale-like Basilosaurids with armor plating (ridiculous). Even cryptozoologists admit that the rarity of good sightings and any hard evidence makes Con Rit one of the most unlikely sea serpents to exist. You can read more about this criptid here.

Modern trilobites: Cryptozoology and creationism are often tightly intermarried. Creationists have a strange and misinformed notion that if they can discover living animals from groups that scientists consider to be extinct, they will somehow prove that the earth is only 6000 years old and that animals don’t evolve. These creationists are especially interested in dinosaur-like cryptids including plesiosaurs (Nessie, ect.) and sauropods (Mokele-mbembe). Some of these creationist-types also insist that a variety of misidentified arthropods are, in fact, living trilobites. According to these goofballs; isopods, water penny beetle larvae, and tadpole shrimp are all trilobites, therefore: Jesus! – or something.

Taxonomy FAIL: A) Trilobite. B) Trilobite. C) Trilobite

Trilobites apparently went extinct 250 million years ago, disappearing from the fossil record during the Permian mass extinction. It is unlikely (unfortunately) that they persist today in small, remote populations – as is the case with the coelacanth. Even if living trilobites are discovered, it would not disprove evolution; the new discovery would only mean that archeologists missed something, and trilobites would be seamlessly integrated into current evolutionary theory – as the modern coelacanths were.

Unusually large variant of arthropod X: Giagantified versions of well known animals are a common theme in the cryptozoological world. It seems that in super-sized America, something is a lot more interesting if it is bigger and more extreme(!). This trend even includes a few arthropod cryptids; giant spiders, giant bees, and giant crustaceans (possibly the vocalists behind the bloop). However, there are serious problems with gigantism in arthropods. Their respiratory and circulatory physiology can be incredibly limiting to attaining large sizes. Therefore, as noticed previously by Entophile, one reason that there are so few arthropod cryptids may be because they do not reach large enough proportions to interest the general public.

That brings us back to the question: Why do cryptozoologists hate arthropods? Despite the fact that arthropods represent nearly 80 percent of know animal life, and the constant discovery of previously-undescribed arthropods by biologists (real scientists discover new animals all the time); it was not easy to come up with the few examples of crunchy cryptids that I mentioned above. I think that the answer to my question lies within the integral nature of cryptooolzgy. I feel that cryptooolzgy is largely a form of zoology deficient in scholarship, logic, and rigor; and the people that accept the mantle of ‘cryptozoologist’ are not professional researchers, but rather enthusiasts participating in a popular cultural movement.

Arthropods do not usually register highly in the zeitgeist of the masses. Most people, and therefore cryptozoologists, prefer their cryptids mysterious and yet easily tangible. If I were to go traipsing around in the woods, attempting to take blurry photographs of the elusive arboreal giant copepod, most people wouldn’t be able to relate in the slightest to my quarry. However, If I am hunting Big Foot, people can easily conjure up the notion of a creature almost identical to a human, only increased in size and follicle density. Or, if I am soliciting funds to travel to the Congo to hunt Mokele-mbembe in the name of Jesus, people can easily identify this creature as a dinosaur, akin to the sauropod form that they are bombarded with as children. Furthermore, this concept also applies to cryptid sightings, as the human brain uses concepts that are familiar in order to comprehend things that are not. Your brain turns floating logs and schools of otters into plesiosaurs, and dark blurs in the woods into Big Foot.

Sadly, for the majority of people, the brain leaves arthropods out.

Giant, blurry arboreal copepods exist, this is proof.

P.S. If you know of, or come across any additional arthropod cryptids please leave a comment!

If you haven’t heard about the aptly nicknamed Hobbit, you should know about it. In 2003 a new species of human was excavated from a cave in Indonesia. Homo floresiensis was about 3 feet tall and had an incredibly small brain. This has been a point of some contention, and multiple genetic conditions have been proposed to be responsible for the specimen. A torrent of studies have fought over the details and interpretation of various proportions of the bones.

Despite the tiny brain, it was found with quite sophisticated stone technology. This could have been necessary to hunt the big game of the island. It is unclear whether it was of their species’ own merit or by human interaction. The fauna of the island would have included pygmy elephants, giant rats, and komodo dragons; and the island inhabitants lived at the same period as modern humans (94,000 to 13,000 y.a.). The scientific consensus is currently that this is a new species (not just an abnormal human), though the case will not be closed until a second specimen is discovered.

It really fascinates me that they had such a small brain, and yet seemed to have complex weapons and tools. I entertain the idea that complicated tools originated in this line and moved to human populations by mimicry. This is a neurological outrage for a number of respects. From the brain/body proportion, scientists would expect a dramatically hindered organism in mental faculties. Perhaps the species was far less socially intelligent than the majority of apes, and diverted more brainpower towards other means.

Just saw a video by Devin Marble, one of the Fact or Faked program experts. This isn’t a long video, about 5 minutes, so you may want to watch it.

Devin’s Download: The Woolly Mammoth – Fact or Faked

I don’t think it’s prudent to assume that we can guess/estimate which river was seen in the video. The river he mentions also has vast tributaries running through a huge area. To assume that every piece of the river and its tributaries is deep, is pushing the boundary of reason in my opinion.

In the original video, the river looked shallow enough to me, that wasn’t the problem. (You can read more about my opinion of this original video in a previous post in CryptoVille – see the index to the right of the page.)

I did like his assessment of the fact that the water should be splashing against the animal’s body and it doesn’t seem to be. That could very well mean the whole thing was photoshopped.

One thing is clear, the original video is fake. Whether the woolly mammoth still exists will remain another tantalizing mystery for us all to ponder — for now!

Til next time!

Several things happened at once, and none of them were pleasant.

Rezzykjjrwff lunged at me, but he was too slow. I was already on the floor, darting under the table when his clumsy hands raked the space where I was. I caught a white blur dashing behind me—it was Deezil, a growl growing in his throat, springing to protect my flank. Gorryn had jumped sideways to avoid the clutches of one of the Plutorian guards. Hair bristled on his back as he eased into a comfortable battle stance between the two.

“Back off, Buttsmoke!” Deezil snapped at Rezzykjjrwff. The clipped command was full of deep menace.

After a moment of tense silence, Rezzykjjrwff laughed—I think; it could have been a cough or a growl of his own—and swiped at Deezil. The little dog danced out of the way, nearly losing his footing on the table top, and then charged.

“Gorryn! The wall!” I shouted. Our only hope was if the decorative weapons that hung nearby were more than just decorations. If I could just get my paws on a blaster, or if he could wield one of those staves…

One of the Plutorian guards jumped at Gorryn. He paused briefly, then darted toward me. The Plutorian had already committed, and his head crashed into the edge of the table with a horrific crunch. He groaned and sank to his knees, clutching the running wound.

Deezil had Rezzykjjrwff by the throat and his back claws were raking his chest, but he appeared to be doing nothing more than annoying the Plutorian admiral. Rezzykjjrwff got a hand on him and pulled him off by the scruff of his neck and hurled him to the side. Deezil yelped and went still.

I could not reach any of the blasters. I hissed in frustration and felt, more than saw, a shadow envelop me. The remaining Plutorian thought me an easy target. My claws came out and I felt my tail thicken. The Plutorian reached for me, a fearsome smile on his face, and met my teeth and claws. He howled in pain and pulled his bleeding fingers away as I spat foul Plutorian blood. Gorryn yowled his war cry and threw his ample bulk into the back of the Plutorian’s knees hard enough to stagger and nearly topple him. I jumped at his midsection and used it as a springboard to launch myself toward the wall of weapons. I saw his arms flail as he slowly lost his balance, then heard a satisfying grunt as he landed on his back, winded.

My aim had been true. I managed to dislodge one of the clasps holding a short cudgel-like device to the wall before I redirected myself and landed on all four paws. The weapon tilted, then slipped from its position and fell into Gorryn’s waiting grasp. It was just a short club for the Plutorians, but a long staff for Gorryn, who knew well how to wield such weapons. He spun it in front of him like a fan as the two Plutorian guards climbed warily to their feet.

Their confidence had been shaken, and that made me smile. I don’t think they liked the look of it.

Gorryn and I slipped into Battle Stance again, determined to press what little advantage we had, but it was all for naught.

“That will be enough,” Rezzykjjrwff’s cold voice caught our attention. He had Deezil cradled in his arms like a child, but the Plutorian’s claws were fully extended and roughly poking the little dog’s throat.

“Unless, of course, you wish me to open this one up and pull out its insolent tongue?”

Deezil, the brave, fierce soul , was helpless. And that meant the battle was over. We were caught. I nodded to Gorryn, who let the staff clatter to the floor. It rolled across the room and came to rest under Rezzykjjrwff’s foot.

“Take them away—if you can manage that,” Rezzykjjrwff said, disdain plain in his voice. “But leave them in a place where they can watch the destruction of their little ship.”

I hope you don’t mind if I sometimes cover horror/cult TV shows in addition to full-length TV

I hope you don’t mind if I sometimes cover horror/cult TV shows in addition to full-length TV features. One of the best things about Netflix is that I get to find TV shows I have never heard of and watch the shit out of them. I have rarely had the patience to watch shows during their regular runs, The X-Files and Twin Peaks being the most notable exceptions, but I love TV marathons. So when I found Lost Tapes, an Animal Planet mockumentary series on cryptozoology, it was relevant to my interests.

So far I have only watched four episodes, but at between 20-30 minutes per episode, they’re gonna become almost as much a staple for me as the YouTube videos I wrote about last night. The first episode is on the Chupacabra. A family trying to escape across the Mexican border into the U.S. is attacked in broad daylight. I’ve never been all that scared of the Chupacabra, although I admit I’d be scared if one attacked me; however, the episode was disturbing not only because the attack took place in the daytime, but because we had to watch the family’s dreams of a new life being crushed.

The second episode covers the Native American legend of the Skinwalker, a human shapeshifter who can appear as an animal and who kills people and animals to steal their souls. Again, the daylight horror was twice as disturbing as nighttime horror would be, and the human form of the Skinwalker had a super creepy demeanor. The episode also touched on one of my worst horror movie fears, hearing a supernatural being calling your name in the voice of someone you know. I wasn’t crazy about the wrap-around story’s inclusion of a conflict between a college kid visiting his parents’ home ranch, and his rancher dad who’s butthurt that his kid went to college. More time could have been spent skinwalkin’ if you ask me.

The third episode was suspenseful and therefore effective because it dealt with a woman trying to break a sailing record alone and running up on a sea monster. I can tell you from personal experience that there are few events as panic-inducing as falling off of a boat, no matter how good of a swimmer and boater you are, and that fear was exploited to good use.

Finally, I skipped ahead to an episode about hellhounds. A group of goth college kids go out to a cemetery to initiate a new member of their little group. One of them is such a nasty person that I couldn’t help looking forward to seeing something happen to her, and the twist at the end was extra creepy, but I’ve never thought much about hellhounds and I’ll probably continue not to.

In addition to the different ways the show finds to work in self-filmed footage of each group of victims, there is documentary information including interviews with “experts.” The information seems to follow the myths as we know them. The fast-paced show packs a lot into each episode. I look forward to seeing both the Bigfoot and Mothman episodes, and to discovering myths that are new to me. I’m sure that at least one of the myths presented by the show does exist and just hasn’t been found by science yet. You could say that I want to believe. The Mothman is probably my favorite “myth,” but the Bigfoot seems the most realistic to me since so many cultures have a tradition of having seen them. What’s your favorite mythical creature? Do you think it might ever be found?

I’m talking about witchcraft, druidism, tarot, ouija boards, and everything related to “new age” teachings.

Guess they can fake just about anything, this appears to be real enough that it would take a Hollywood production studio to produce something like this. Even though it swims by quickly, even without slow motion playback you can see it’s arms if you look closely enough. What makes me lean toward believing this is possible is in the last week I remember reading something about someone who witnessed a navy/military outfit that were bringing up the casualties from some kind of undersea civilization they had discovered and subsequently destroyed with sonar. I didn’t get the impression they were describing aliens or extraterrestrials either.

If this is true it’s a typical example of the psychopathic, destructive mentality of the military mind. It makes no sense to exterminate peaceful civilizations that obviously do everything possible to avoid contact with humans, most likely because they sense the homicidal nature inherent in humanity. Sightings of mermaids go back thousand of years, they are legendary in historical mythology and the more we learn about our hidden history it’s not so far fetched to think there was some truth the these myths.

So here’s the final part of this paranormal series. If you’ve held on with me, you deserve a pat on the back and one of my chocolate marshmallow scones. Thanks a whole heap, y’all!

Here’s the rest of my hubby’s thoughts on things–at least the thoughts he’s written down.

The Spiritual Materialist: In the World and of It

Our final category (for now) involves what I think is probably the most ironic type of mindset we’ve considered thus far. It is also probably the most common. It involves Christians scoffing at all paranormal claims reflexively because “everybody” knows things like that don’t exist.

Three Categories

I say this is ironic, because if ever there were a people who had reason to take paranormal claims seriously, it would be Christians. In theory, our entire life is based on the existence of a world beyond the natural realm, from which incredibly powerful non-human entities regularly enter in order to influence our reality. Of course, the ultimate example of this is the Creator of the Universe passing into our space-time to sacrifice Himself and pay for the sins of our world, but there are plenty of other instances. We also say we believe in angels, demons, cherubim, seraphim, prayer and miracles. The list could go on for some time.

Yup.

And yet, if someone comes up and claims to have seen anything out of the “ordinary,” what is the average western Christian’s most common reaction? Denial. Sometimes mockery. In short, they react very much like your average atheist or secular humanist We see this beautifully illustrated in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, when Lucy first returns from Narnia and tries to convince her siblings of where she’s been. Edmund immediately declares her to be “Batty!…Quite batty,” while Peter and Susan come to believe that she’s mentally ill.

The end result is that those who are best equipped to look at the world beyond the normal—the paranormal—through the lens of spiritual understanding are in fact blinded by a bias that has nothing to do with what they really believe.

I think the reasons for this sad state of affairs varies from person-to-person. Many people have absorbed so much of the pseudo-scientific nonsense spouted by the secular world that they have accepted the false idea that in order to be “intelligent” one must reject the supernatural entirely and think wholly as a materialist. At the same time, they hold to Christian beliefs that positively require the presence of the supernatural to make any sense. Both of these mutually exclusive propositions somehow co-exist inside their heads until such time as one or the other wins on a practical level. From my experience, very rarely are either thought through.

All this reminds me of definition from Donald T. Williams’ excellent foray into the mind of Hell, The Devil’s Dictionary of the Christian Faith: “Liberal 1 (n): One who believes that Jesus never said most of the words or did any of the deeds attributed to him, but that, for some reason which remains unclear, we should follow him anyway” (52). It is one of the best ploys of Screwtape’s “Father Below”; the “faithful” do not have to actually believe in much of anything in any practical way beyond mere hypothetical assent. They never expect to really meet any of these entities, and when they do, the refuse to accept them. That means they are prevented by default from developing any tangible relationship with a Christ in whom they have no real belief, and are not on their guard against interference from devils who they do not think exist. From Hell’s perspective, it is a perfect arrangement.

Don't have this book? GET IT! You will laugh so hard you'll squirt milk out your nose!

Clearly, I’m not suggesting that Christians are somehow bound by honor or logic to accept every half-baked claim of a supernatural occurrence that somehow floats our way. Far from it. We are told, in fact, to “test the spirits.” Demons are not hiding behind even a large minority of bushes. Still, we should at least be consistent enough with our own presuppositions to keep a truly open mind and not preclude any possibilities for no other reason than vague preference or mindless prejudice.

Besides, I think a Christian who, in practice, does not allow for the existence of spirits or the supernatural in some real way has some serious self reflection to do on what, and in whom, they actually believe.
