hopefully my mac battery will last long enough to let me write this blog while stuck here at o’hare…when I actually post this I’ll probably be at my mom’s place already, since I’m not down with the whole airport wireless program. question- is it really that serious to withhold having free wireless in airports? it’s 2010, people…really?? i don’t know anybody who pays for boingo or any of the other “hot spot” wireless services accessible in airports, but I would love to know the statistics on that. how many people actually order that stuff?

anywayyyyyy…. spinning at the hudson went really well and will hopefully result in future job opportunities. spun a quick house/deep house/electronic set… a mix of obscure stuff and some stuff most people into those genres would know- goldfrapp, crystal waters, ladytron, daft punk, la roux (my new obsession!!), modjo, ect…definitely got people dancing, finished my set, and let tim martell swoop in and do his thing for the rest of the night. frank came thru to help take some pics, so I’ve gotta give him all the credit for these:

as far as what else popped off this weekend- i watched the life changing exposé that IS ‘food, inc.’ even if you’re a huge fan of fast food (pun intended), this movie will turn you onto a healthier lifestyle. if it doesn’t, then I’m sorry that either A. the point totally went over your head or B. you have no soul. the food production system in this country is corrupt beyond what the average person could only begin to imagine. the major meat distribution companies, like tyson and other comparable giants, are being run by crazed maniacs who could care less who they have to step on to make their money. the whole thing is just a disgusting process. therefore, they are the hot mess of the day. yuck.

well, for now i’m off to bask in my few days off here… will post more soon…

It is no secret that I love, love, love reading Craigslist’s treasure trove of awkwardness, the Missed Connections section. So, of course, as we all continue from a weekend filled with makeup, witches’ brew and masked make-out sessions, I couldn’t resist an opportunity to round-up some of my favorite Chicago MC’s to tell a little tale of Halloween lure (in addition to sharing some tunes).

Personally, Halloween has never been a holiday I associate with wild hook-ups, but maybe that’s because my costumes are usually not of the “Sexy (Fill-in-the-Blank)” variety. I’m usually in drag, covered in grotesque makeup with stubble poking through, and this year was no exception as I took on the role of Little Edie Beale from Grey Gardens. The below characters seem to have had some good luck knocking boots, even if they had a lot of explaining to do for their mother upon their return home. Here’s hoping the fates bring these lovers back together.

The 90s. I miss it. A lot of good music came out in this decade, especially in the beginning of the decade. A lot of quality tracks in many different genres that still get the respect they deserve today when played for crowds, young and old. There is no doubt that there are some low quality tracks that are really cheesy, but for someone like me, they just bring back some great memories of being young. In the days when it was easy to have fun and not have to worry about money, health, or any of that adult mumbo jumbo.

This brings us to the theme of this mix. 90s club music, including house, dance-pop, eurodance, hip house, and more. As cheesy as some of this stuff is, especially to the teens of today, it was fucking great to us, just like the music of our predecessors was to them. None of the music was threatening or too sexual, just innocent lyrics about dancing and love that could only do a few things, make you happy, put a cheese on your face, and make you want to dance all night long.

Um. My body hurts.

Parallels recently dropped a brand new video to their single Ultralight.  It captures the track extremely well with it’s neonized visual effects and choppy film transitions.

I’ve been a big fan of the Toronto-based Parallels for awhile now.  Their signature sound is extremely captivating but does not deviate too far between each track.  This generally means majority of their tracks sound very similar.  I don’t mind being a Canadian and a huge Parallels fan but anyone else checking in for the first time should know.  I’m looking forward to see more more come our way from Findlay, Dodson and Kehoe.  Next listed show is Sep 11.09 at The Mod Club (Toronto).

Crystal Waters – 100% Pure loveFrom the back to the middle and around again, I’m gonna be there til the end. Don’t ask me why Crystal Waters is what I was needing to hear today – the music gods move me in mysterious ways. I always loved this snappy little tune way better than her previous megahit Gypsy Woman (she’s homeless, she’s homeless, ladadee ladada). 100% has a good house foundation, killer cowbell and plenty of sass. I am amazed that this song is 15 years old. I think it holds up pretty well. And did you know that she is the niece of the legendary jazz/blues singer (and Oscar nominated actress) Ethel Waters? Fascinating. She continues to record and tour, and had a top 20 dance chart hit earlier this year. And that concludes today’s flashback moment.

Timmy Vegas & Bad Lay Dee – Another Dimension (Triple D Club Mix)

Det här är ett helt underbart exempel på lyckad recycling. Ja, man behöver inte vara raketforskare för att höra var inspirationen kommer ifrån. Man har återanvänt själva temat från Crystal Waters sommarplåga Gypsy Woman från 1991, och resultatet är en underbar dansgolvsrökare anno 2009. Nu är inte det här den enda bra versionen utan det finns även en grymt bra radioversion som kommer här.

Timmy Vegas & Bad Lay Dee – Another Dimension

Båda versionerna har sin charm och känns nästan som två olika låtar. Den första bygger ju mycket på pianospelet medans den andra mer lutar sig mot de vokala insatserna. Sen har radioversionen lite mer 90-talsstuk i rytmsektionen om man lyssnar riktigt noga.

Soul Revival – When The Spirit Moves (Jazz’N’Groove Dub)

Ännu en låt som gått mig helt förbi tidigare, men det som är lite kul är att Jazz’N’Groove som gjort just den här mixen har använt sig av samma trumbeats som de hade i sin remix av Crystal Waters Relax som kom ut ungefär vid samma tid. Tyvärr fanns den versionen inte på YouTube och det känns inte som läge att slänga upp den heller eftersom jag åkt på så många bakslag då jag försökt lägga upp uddamixar på min kanal sista tiden.

Ta bara exemplet med min Mayday-kassett som gjorde att jag fick lägga ner hela den idén om att dela med mig till världen av hur det kunde låta på Mayday en sommarkväll i juli 1980. Men ni som känner mig och som är intresserade kan ju höra av er så kan ni få en kompiskopia av Mayday-kassetten på CD (i MP3-format) via snigelpost. Övriga göre sig icke besvär utan bara ni som vet vem jag är och således vet hur ni kan få kontakt med mig.

Well, I have to admit that watching Sam working in the studio was a thrilling journey for me. He is so genuine! And his voice, oh my, it’s incredible even when he just speaks. I absolutely love his cover of ‘Gypsy Woman’ by Crystal Waters – a whole bunch of ideas and inspirations came to me with this version of the song. Yay, summer holiday is so close!
