Some hobbies are taken seriously, some are not. Some sports are taken seriously, some are not. Gamin

Some hobbies are taken seriously, some are not. Some sports are taken seriously, some are not. Gaming is an activity popularly (and perhaps ignorantly) connected to immature and pubertal males. Why? Well, gaming tournaments like these definitly don’t help.

Game conventions like E3 are, to a large extent, the very display window of the game industry. And what would a gaming convention be without pleasant looking women with big boobs? Unheard of to most participants. We want to looka at new games, and we want them to be surrounded by half naked women.

A book convention or a film convention would be a much more classy experience. Why can’t games be classy? Well, that’s a good question. When a Counter Strike championship is taking place, and a pair of naked women start to rub themselves up against the competitors, in order to destract and test team loyalty, then serious isn’t exactly the first word that comes to mind.

When will the gaming industry grow up? Not in a while, it seems.

My family has not heard a word about the dogs we have applied for four days ago. I do realize that

My family has not heard a word about the dogs we have applied for four days ago. I do realize that it is the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but I was hoping to hear something, anything from someone, anyone who could grant my family the wish of a dog. One gal only needed to reply to an e-mail message! But, it was not meant to be. I guess that by not hearing anything, I have my answer, but I am deeply disappointed in the level of customer service in this day and age. After all, I am a living, breathing prospect. Shouldn’t the sellers be courting me with, “Gee, I see you applied for Sophie. She’s not available, but we have Frank who has similar qualities. Do you want to come see? We are open from 10-3 today.” How hard is that?

Maybe I have spent too many hours reading books about customer service, public relations, and marketing, and I know how these people “should” behave, but see that maybe my values newly acquired from various authors are not shared by the rescue organizations. Sure, they’re great at push advertising (putting dogs and cats on TV morning shows and on Craig’s List), but where are their social marketing skills in this new era of marketing and retaining customers?

New Rules of Marketing & PR

I learned the most relevant and easy-to-apply skills from David Meerman Scott who wrote The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing & Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly. I have quoted Mr. Scott so often that his ears must be burning nonstop. He is also one of the most prolific posters on Facebook, and he is a real, down-to-earth, guy. He lives and breathes what he writes about. I e-mailed him and he e-mailed me back personally. I tweeted the fact that I was reading his book, World Wide Rave, and he actually contacted me to find out if I liked the book. And I don’t mean a day later, or a week later, he responded within hours. I wasn’t even looking for a response to my tweet, but there it was. And what reaction does Mr. Scott have on me? I am a raving fan!

This is how the animal rescue societies should deal with live leads; they might even send fewer dogs to their deaths. Just something to think about.

Obviously as I’m very new to being involved in the Ubuntu community, I didn’t go to Dall

Obviously as I’m very new to being involved in the Ubuntu community, I didn’t go to Dallas for UDS Lucid Lynx earlier this month, however, I did decide to do as much remote participation as I could. I was quite surprised and pleased by how well remote participation was set up and how well it worked. The Ubuntu Wiki page about remote participation was useful, although the best guide in terms of laying it out plainly was Laura Czajkwoski’s How to participate remotely and get your points heard. Laura did a good guide with helpful suggestions such as joining IRC channels for the sessions you want to attend a head of time.

The hardest part for me was that I was in work or commuting during most of the hours that UDS was happening. I am allowed to listen to things while at work so I set up so I could listen to the icecasts. I did my best to balance listening to the ice casts and getting my work done with occasional moments of actually saying something on IRC.

Generally I thought the integration of those participating remotely with the people physically at the sessions was good. There were some communication issues, but not many. The one that bothered me the most wasn’t even one that effected me. One of the sessions decided to turn off their mic and essentially have a closed session. However, this was not announced anywhere so someone started asking in the IRC channel for the room the session was in and in #ubuntu-uds about the mic being off. Finally someone else who’d overheard discussion in a hallway about how the session leaders wanted to have a closed session said something in #ubuntu-uds. It would have taken less than a minute for it to be announced in the IRC channel (preferably both in the channel for the room and in #ubuntu-uds).

I pretty much followed the community track since I’m not really technical and that’s where most of the discussions I was interested in were happening. Highlights for me included all of the Ubuntu Women sessions; I feel like real work and progress was made in just putting together a really concrete plan for what is needed in the next few months to get the project back on track and keep it there. While I didn’t get to pay attention as much as I’d have liked to, the Ubuntu NGO session also seemed to go well. The Community Roundtables were also good, however, I was a bit confused about why they didn’t start on Monday. To me it would have made sense to have had the first one on Monday to really give a roadmap for the week.

I know at other times I’ve had more to say about UDS that I can’t think of right now and I’m sure that another post will happen at some other point. I do want to say how much I enjoyed being able to participate remotely and how much I did feel a part of things. It definitely exceeded my expectations going in.

by Frank Fortner

In talking with many of our customers, I’m often amazed by the number of good folks in the “MAGIC Kingdom” who still don’t fully realize what a significant shift in technology the MEDITECH Advanced Technology now shipping in (parts of) Client/Server version 6.x represents. Some have even been led to believe 6.x is just another run-of-the-mill ring release that you migrate to after C/S 5.6. I’ve spoken with a few beta sites and early adopters who might beg to differ. For the sake of this post however, let’s concentrate on the new MEDITECH Advanced Database (MAD). I want to highlight a few of the differences between the MAD and its predecessor (NPR) and since there is much to say on this topic, I’m going to break this into parts I and II. In part I, we’ll look at the structure and design of the new database.

For starters, whereas the MAGIC/NPR database was termed “hierarchical,” the new Advanced Database is best described as “chronological” or “append-only,” which (in English) means that nothing is ever overwritten or deleted from it. Most databases think in terms of add, insert or delete. With MAD, you really just add. There’s a slogan in there somewhere. In order to illustrate how the MAD stores data, consider the following screenshot:

The highlighted section in the top half of the structure represents an initial entry in the MIS Directions Dictionary, where the facility of LAB has been created along with three corresponding applications, .DFT, LAB and PCS. The lower un-highlighted section represents records that were later added due to an edit of the .DFT application and its schedule. The advantage to this type of data storage is that it produces the mother-of-all audit trails. A record of every addition, edit and deletion is stored, complete with the initials of the user responsible for each entry. The downside would seem to be the size of the database and how much larger it could potentially grow as more edits and deletions are made. By the way… if you’re a old MAGIC programmer, you’ve probably realized you can still feel your way around a structure like this.

Keep in mind, when a program reads data from a chronological database, it has to essentially parse through the entire structure, so as more edits are made over time and the structure grows, you could pay a performance penalty. At the same time, MEDITECH has implemented several tricks and techniques to make the reading of this type of file more efficient than it would appear to be at first glance. In fact, MEDITECH has a special service program called ANP that has been highly optimized for reading from and writing to the MAD and it’s the ONLY program that is allowed to do so. As a final word on performance, it’s safe to say your mileage may vary by application because some apps are more edit-intensive than others.

I hope this has provided you with a basic introduction to the new database structure and how it stores data as compared with its predecessor, NPR. In part II, we’ll look at some other differences between the two database technologies. As always, your comments and questions are welcome. In addition, if you would like to see some other aspects of the Advanced Technology covered in future posts, please let us know.

Diamonds are perhaps the most admired and desirable gems. The traditional engagement ring, the diamo

Diamonds are perhaps the most admired and desirable gems. The traditional engagement ring, the diamond stud earrings, the diamond pendant all evoke the eternal beauty and precious aura of diamonds.

Buying diamond jewelry can be a new experience for most people, and can leave you feeling intimidated or overwhelmed by the amount of information and advertising out there.

Different characteristics of diamonds will influence the appearance and value, and some are more important than others. Whether the diamond is in a ring, or a necklace, or a pair of earrings, knowing the 5 “C”s, plus the shape of the diamond, will help to choose the right stone for you or for the one you are going to give the diamond jewelry to.

The 5 “C”s are Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat weight and Certification. Let’s start with the cut.

The cut of a diamond will determine its brilliance. Whatever the shape of the diamond, whether round, oval, pear, emerald, marquise or heart, the polished facets of the way the diamond is cut, and the better the cut, the more brilliance and sparkle it will have.

Next, let’s look at color. Color grades of diamonds actually refer to the lack of color. White diamonds, with little or no color, are considered higher grade than diamonds with visible color.

Clarity in diamonds refers to the absence of imperfections in the stone. Most diamonds have some tiny imperfections, and those with fewer, with more clarity, receive the highest clarity grades.

Carat weight is important, as it measures the weight of the diamond. Keep in mind that carat weight alone does not define the quality of a diamond – all of the 5 “C”s must be taken into account to determine quality and value.

Finally, the diamond should be certified by the GIA. The Gemological Institute of America will provide an unbiased diamond report based on the first 4 “C”s. Your diamond should have this certification. For more information on the GIA, visit their web site at http://www.gia.edu.

The more you know about diamonds, the better prepared you’ll be when the big day arrives – will it be a surprise engagement ring for your lady? Diamonds as that special birthday or holiday gift? A reward for yourself, “just because”? Imagine the wide eyes of the “sweet sixteen” who receives her first pair of diamond stud earrings!

It’s important to deal with reputable jewelers, be sure to get that GIA certification, ask questions, and you’ll be sure to choose just the right diamonds for your taste and budget.

In this post, we shall consider an NP-complete problem, namely that of determining whether a simple

In this post, we shall consider an NP-complete problem, namely that of determining whether a simple path of length k exists in a given graph, G = (V,E).

Formally,

LONGEST PATH PROBLEM

Input: undirected graph, G = (V,E), integer .

Parameter: k

To find: Does G contain a simple path of length, k?

(Note: length refers to edge length here. In particular, a simple path of length k has k edges.)

The problem has a natural extension:-

EXTENDED LONGEST PATH PROBLEM

Input: undirected graph, G = (V,E), integer .

Parameter: k

To find: All pairs of vertices , such that there exists a simple path of length k between i and j in G.

=======

This article is based on the seminal paper on Color-Coding by Noga Alon, Raphael Yuster, Uri Zwick [1995]. The method of random orientations is mentioned in the paper prior to a description of the color-coding approach.

=======

We concern ourselves with the Extended Longest Path problem.

Consider the adjacency matrix, A of input graph, G. (A is an matrix, with 0 / 1 entries, which we interpret as integers.)

We have, iff there exists an edge .

(Note: represents the entry at the row and column of matrix A.)

Consider the matrix, .

iff there exists a path of length two between i and j in G. (Why? Verify for yourself.)

Generalizing, we can make the following statement for the matrix .

iff there exists a path of length k between i and j in G. (Why? use induction to prove this.)

Question: Do all paths represented in the matrix entries correspond to simple paths of G?

In other words, is the following statement true:

iff there exists a simple path of length k between i and j in G.

–

By a little observation, it can be seen that for the matrix entry to be non-zero, the path between vertices i and j need not necessarily be simple. In other words, the path may contain cycles.

Hence, we can not infer from the fact of having , the conclusion that there exists a simple path of length k between i and j in G.

—

How do we fix this problem?

Consider a graph, H that does not have any cycles (i.e. acyclic graph). Clearly, all paths in H are necessarily simple. (For a path to not be simple, the path needs to contain a cycle, which is precluded by the fact of H being acyclic.)

Let B denote the adjacency matrix of acyclic graph, H.

We can make the following statements:-

iff there exists a path of length k between i and j in H.

And since all paths of H are necessarily simple, the above statement is equivalent to:-

iff there exists a simple path of length k between i and j in H.

Therefore, if the input graph is acyclic, raising the adjacency matrix to the power k solves the Extended Longest Path Problem.

—-

Question: How do we obtain an acyclic graph, H from the given input graph, G?

Prior to answering this question, we shall digress briefly to the look at the notion of a Directed Acyclic Graph (abbreviated as DAG).

—

Consider an undirected graph, G = (V,E) on vertices. We shall construct a directed acyclic version of G.

Let be a permutation of the vertices i.e. , ( is one-one and onto, i.e. bijective.)

Call the directed version of G as . The vertex set of is V (same as G). For every edge of G, we have a corresponding directed edge in .

For each edge of G, add edge to iff .

(i.e. Orient every edge of G from the vertex having lower value to the vertex having greater value. )

Claim 1.  is acyclic.

Proof. Assume to the contrary that has a cycle, .

Hence, we have the following inequalities:-

Claim 2 (Converse of Claim 1.). Given a Directed Acyclic Graph, G = (V,E), we can obtain a bijection , such that for every edge , the following condition holds:.

Proof-sketch.

Given any directed acyclic graph, G = (V,E), we have:-

such that .

(In other words, we can find a vertex in V, which has no incoming edges.)

Assign for one such vertex, v.

Remove from to get a new directed acyclic graph. Find a vertex, u that satisfies the above condition in this new graph, assign .

Proceed in this manner until all vertices are assigned a value under the function, .

End of proof-sketch.

===

We can now return to the question raised prior to the discussion on directed acyclic graphs.

To restate:

Question: How do we obtain an acyclic graph, H from the given input graph, G?

Solution: Take a random (What does “random” mean?) permutation . Create an directed acyclic version of G as outlined in the preceding discussion. Call this graph, .

(By “random”, we mean a permutation selected uniformly at random from the set of n! possible permutations of the vertex set, V.)

Denote the adjacency matrix of by B.

As seen earlier, we have:-

iff there exists a simple path in between i and j in $latex G_{dir} $ of length k.

Since every simple path in is also a simple path in G (Why is this true?), we have:-

If , then a simple path between i and j in G of length k.

Question: Is the converse of this above statement true?

In other words, is the following statement true:-

If there exists a simple path between i and j in G of length k, then .

Answer: No.

The above question can also be rephrased as:

Are all simple paths in G carried over into ?

(Take a simple path, p in G, and figure out for yourself how the edges of p need to be oriented for path, p to exist in . In particular, what does this imply about the values of the vertices along the path?)

==

Now, we can ask the question:

Question: What is the probability that a particular simple path, of length k in G gets preserved in given that we take a random permutation, to obtain from ?

Solution: There are only two ways in which path can get preserved in -

either as the directed path, ,

or as the directed path, .

Path  exists only if .

Path  exists only if .

Note that we are not concerned with the values of any of the other vertices of G.

Hence, we obtain the following:

Probability that a particular path, p in G, of length k, is preserved in  = 2 / (k+1)!.

(How do we get that?)

===

The above probability implies that to preserve any particular simple path of G (having length k), we need to take an expected number of (k+1)! / 2 random permutations.

===

Running time of the algorithm:

We can state the expected running time of the algorithm. We need to perform the following steps.

1. Given a particular random permutation, .

Raise the adjacency matrix, B of to the power k.

This can be done via matrix multiplications, each of which takes time. (Here is the exponent for matrix multiplication . )

2. Repeating the same for an expected number of random permutations.

3. Keep track of of the pairs of vertices, for each of which we need to output a boolean Yes or No value (corresponding to whether or not a simple path of length k exists in G between that pair of vertices.) (Note: n = |V|).

Initialize all values of this global list to No at the beginning of the algorithm. For each permutation, if the matrix entry, and if the value corresponding to pair (i,j) is listed as No in the global list, change it to Yes.

Hence, the expected running time of the algorithm is . .

(We have ignored certain polynomial (in the size of the graph) factors in the running time. That is justified owing to the “supremacy” of the (k+1)! term over other factors.)

The reason my previous entry ended so abruptly was due to killer legs. I mean, my legs were killing

The reason my previous entry ended so abruptly was due to killer legs. I mean, my legs were killing me, not that I have “killer legs.” Er, yes. Apparently, I’m told I have a rather odd and awkward sense of humor, which may be validated by these blog posts.

Yesterday I went to the beach with my college fellowship group, and we played volleyball, soccer and football. It was epic, I must say. We were there throughout the afternoon, and the sun was setting in hues of crimson and gold on the horizon as we were knocking each other down in football. But as you know, running through the sand is way more exhausting than on flat ground, and we were at it for hours. I haven’t exercised like that in far too long. Last night, I had to go to sleep just because the pain in my legs was nearly unbearable. +o.O+

Everyone was a bit beat up, though. One of the poor guys from our fellowship even broke something in his foot. Ouch. ):

But it really was a lot of fun. I’m so thankful for my fellowship group, because they are seriously amazing. I consider a lot of them brothers and sisters, which we all are in Christ.

In other news, I went to church today after unceremoniously dragging my painful self out of bed. (As it usually goes when I wake up to my alarm at 7 AM.) Not too be negative, because church is more than worth it, of course. We’re studying the Parable of the Soils in the Gospel of Mark now, and it’s been really enlightening. Through this and various other experiences I’ve gone through recently, I’ve come to grasp that as much as I try to lay the burden on myself unconsciously, only the Lord gives salvation. I am to sow the seed of His Word in the hearts of others and share the Good News, but the response is not my responsibility. I think it’s a concept we all know, but it doesn’t completely sink in, especially when you’re so frustrated with an unresponsive nonbeliever that you think their apathy or hostility is a result of your inferior methods. No. It is the state of their heart. And only Christ can change that.

And in college service, we’ve been going through a relationship series. Yes. Relationships. Boys and girls. Romance. Ha ha. I’ve really enjoyed it, in fact. It’s been encouraging to my spirit, and convicting in some of the attitudes and habits I know need to change within me. And sometimes, it’s just been outright hilarious.

Wow, sometimes I start these entries at a loss for topics, and then I realize I’ve written a load of–hopefully understandable–words minutes later. Perhaps that is a metaphor for … life.

Oh, my brain. There are days I wish it worked properly.

Well, I do need to get back to my programming project. Blah. My final project for CS 101 has been plaguing me because I haven’t started it, and then I don’t think I can until I design how I’m going to code it, and then I’m not sure how to design it, and then I’m on facebook. Story of my life.

Loja Steam

Quais as vantagens de usar o Steam?

- Acesso imediato ao jogos: todos os jogos produzidos pela Valve e parceiros estão disponíveis em um só lugar. Após comprar o jogo é so fazer o download e jogar;

- Comunidade Steam: é facil encontrar e convidar um amigo para jogar, ou até mesmo conhecer novos amigos que compartilham os mesmos interesses, gostam dos mesmos jogos, podendo realizar torneios, disputas e desafios;

- Conversar com os amigos enquanto joga online, decidindo qual servidor usar para jogar;

- Busca rápida por centenas de servidores em todo o mundo, usando um buscador fácil de usar;

- Atualização automática dos jogos, aplicando patches e atualizações automaticamente;

- Permite jogar os jogos em qualquer computador, pois os jogos estão associados a uma conta e não ao computador;

- Desconto na pré-venda de jogos e finais de semana com jogos gratuitos;
