I’m typing this during the action packed second-half of extra time at Stade de France where the score is one apiece. The Irish started the match strongly and Robbie Keane, deservedly, fired one in from a Damian Duff pass on 32nd minute. The match was still tied at the end of full-time.

Govou’s goal in 102 minute was ruled off-side then Gallas scored a minute later, from a double Henry hand ball, much to the disbelief of the Irish present. At the end of extra time cue huge sighs of French relief all-round accompanied by much gallic hugging and kissing. Yes, the French, along with the Slovenians, Greeks, Algerians and Portuguese are off to South Africa.

Obviously, L’Equipe has been building its coverage since Sunday and I’m thinking they’ll easily fill 6 pages tomorrow plus a couple of full-page adverts from grateful sponsors.

I was somewhat mystified to learn that Yoann Gourcuff had been voted (only) the 3rd best looking footballer in France until I learned that it was by the readers of a gay magazine – that explains it. Don’t worry Yoann, you’re still top dog with the girls.

I’ve finished reading Jens Voigt’s book “Man Muss Kaempfen!” (one must fight) and it’s pretty much what one would expect but I was left wanting more. Most of the narrative surrounds his Tour de France rides for firstly Credit Agricole and then CSC, where he’s equally complimentary about Roger Legeay, Bjarne Riis and his teammates. I’d have liked a bit more nitty, gritty. But in Germany, post-Puerto, I guess something anodyne was just what the doctor ordered. Jens comes across as a hardworking, reliable team mate and devoted family man who believes that if you don’t give it a go, you don’t stand a chance of winning – very true.

For a complete contrast, I’ve turned to “Vie et Mort de Marco Pantani” (Life and Death of Marco Pantani) written by L’Equipe’s own Philippe Brunel.

Il Pirato in pink

This’ll be the third book I’ve read on the topic and it appears to give more of an insider’s view than the other two: The Death of Marco Pantani by Matt Rendell and, the compilation, Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion. Shame I never got to see him dance on those pedals.

Anyone who saw How I Met Your Mother this past Monday was undoubtedly entertained by the brilliant yet absurd methods Barney used to bed women. Dare I say it, the episode is legen…wait for it…dary?

The ep. recently had me thinking though — can sports card collectors hope to set their own trap in baiting the opposite (or same) sex? Afterall, something as rediculously compounded, yet somehow achieveable as The Scuba Diver could, if all the stars aligned properly, actually happen.

It reminded me of a list that appeared years ago in Canadian Sports Collector, back when the magazine was still not only in existance but was serving the collecting community admirably.

As part of its monthly humour section, editors Fabio Del Rio and Marty McQuaig came up with a top 10 list of card collector pickup lines. Though I can’t remember the contents off-hand, the lines went along the lines of the cheesy goodness we’ve come to expect from hobby humourists.

So maybe there is hope out there for the basement-dwelling segment of the card-collecting population. If nothing else, the experience of trying to pick up a girl or guy at a card show is a story worth telling. Would love to hear any experiences (and no, hitting on Benchwarmer girls doesn’t count).

Just when it looked clear where the markets were lining up around data center automation and cloud c

Just when it looked clear where the markets were lining up around data center automation and cloud computing, things change. I guess that is what makes this industry so very interesting. The proposed acquisition by HP of 3Com is a direct challenge to Cisco’s network management franchise. However, the implications of this move go further than what meets the eye. It also pits HP in a direct path against EMC with its Cisco partnership. And to make things even more interesting, it also puts these two companies in a competitive three way race against IBM and its cloud/data center automation strategy. And of course, it doesn’t stop there. A myriad of emerging companies like Google and Amazon want a larger share of the enterprise market for cloud services. Companies like Unisys and CSC that has focused on the outsourced secure data centers are getting into the act.

I don’t think that we will see a single winner — no matter what any one of these companies will tell you. The winners in this market shift will be those companies can build a compelling platform and a compelling value proposition for a partner ecosystem. The truth about the cloud is that it is not simply a network or a data center. It is a new way of providing services of all sorts that can support changing customer workloads in a secure and predictable manner.

In light of this, what does this say for HP’s plans to acquire 3Com? If we assume that the network infrastructure is a key component of an emerging cloud and data center strategy, HP is making a calculated risk in acquiring more assets in this market. The company that has found that its ProCurve networking division has begun gaining traction. HP ProCurve Networking is the networking division of HP. The division includes network switches, wireless access points, WAN routers, and Access Control servers and software. ProCurve competes directly with Cisco in the networking switch market. When HP had a tight partnership with Cisco, the company de-emphasized the networking. However, once Cisco started to move into the server market, the handcuffs came off. The 3Com acquisition takes the competitive play to a new level. 3Com has a variety of good pieces of technology that HP could leverage within ProCurve. Even more significantly, it picks up a strong security product called TippingPoint, a 3Com acquisition. TippingPoint fills a critical hole in HP’s security offering. TippingPoint, offers network security offerings including intrusion prevention and a product that inspects network packets. The former 3Com subsidiary has also established a database of security threats based a network of external researchers.

But I think that one of the most important reasons that HP bought 3Com is its strong relationships in the Chinese market. In fiscal year 2008 half of 3Com’s revenue came from its H3C joint venture with Chinese vendor, Huawei Technology. Therefore, it is not surprising that HP would have paid a premium to gain a foothold in this lucrative market. If HP is smart, it will do a good job leveraging the many software assets to build out both its networking assets as well as beefing up its software organization. In reality, HP is much more comfortable in the hardware market. Therefore, adding networking as a core competency makes sense. It will also bolster its position as a player in the high end data center market and in the private cloud space.

Cisco, on the other hand, is coming from the network and moving agressively into the cloud and the data center market. The company has purchased a position with VMWare and has established a tight partnership with EMC as a go to market strategy. For Cisco, it gives the company credibility and access to customers outside of its traditional markets. For EMC, the Cisco relationship strengthens its networking play. But an even bigger value for the relationship is to present a bigger footprint to customers as they move to take on HP, IBM, and the assortment of other players who all want to win. The Cisco/EMC/VMware play is to focus on the private cloud. In their view a private cloud is very similar to a private, preconfigured data center. It can be a compelling value proposition to a customer that needs a data center fast without having to deal with a lot of moving parts. The real question from a cloud computing perspective is the key question: is this really a cloud?

It was inevitable that this quiet market dominated by Google and Amazon would heat up as the cloud becomes a real market force. But I don’t expect that HP or Cisco/EMC will have a free run. They are being joined by IBM and Microsoft — among others. The impact could be better options for customers and prices that invariably will fall. The key to success for all of these players will be how well they manage what will be an increasingly heterogeneous, federated, and highly distributed hardware and software world. Management comes in many flavors: management of these highly distributed services and management of the workloads.

About 350 Taliban prisoners are on a hunger strike at a prison in Kandahar and a delegation from the Ministry of Justice is going to the lockup in southern Afghanistan to investigate their complaints. Mohammad Shafiq, one of the prisoners, says the inmates began the hunger strike Sunday evening.
Wonder how the Taliban would respond if prisoners they held went on hunger strike for better conditions?

The Taliban’s statement on this in Arabic and Google English indicates it’s the Sarpoza prison in question. Correctional Service of Canada staff are working there (photos here) to improve things, and Canada committed last year to invest a fair chunk of money to renovate and beef up the place after a significant prison break last summer.

This isn’t the first time the Taliban has complained about how prisoners are being held in Afghanistan.

This is a follow-up on CSC Hldgs, which we have identified in a cup-and-handle formation. The last p

This is a follow-up on CSC Hldgs, which we have identified in a cup-and-handle formation.

The last post, i spoke about an ascending scallop pattern in C06.SI. Now, i would like to say that pattern has not fully materialised. The pullback has gone way too low.

Now, take a look at the chart, and see the cup-and -handle formation that i am looking for. Do not bother about the arcs.

Next, i have applied fibonacci retracement studies. From the base of the cup to the tip. Our 61.8% level comes in at $0.16, and we are trading at $0.165 right now. A handle should always form at the upper half of the cup, and in this case, $0.140-$0.145. Theoretically, once that breaks down, this potential cup-and-handle formation should not be considered one. For now, i would prefer to see price stay above $0.160. The handle should not take too long to form, so i really do hope to see CSC move up in the next week or two. If that does not happen, i will re-evaluate this counter.

Finally, some indicators.

I wish the GMMA and ADX would show signs of a trend change, but nothing so far.

The oscillators are just pointing up, telling us that we may see slight up movement next week.

The latest CSC report has been co-written by Houriya Ahmed, who is a follower of the violent and hat

The latest CSC report has been co-written by Houriya Ahmed, who is a follower of the violent and hate filled ideology of neo-conservatism. Proponents of neo-conservatism include her employer Douglas Murray, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and George W Bush . We all know about the way these people “look at the world”. The latter were signatories of PNAC (Project for the New American Century), which promotes American “hegemony” and “full-spectrum” dominance. They have the blood of innocent people on their hands.

Douglas Murray is a well known bigot.
In many places, the 2 neo-conservatives behind this report, use borrowed secondary research from multiple sources. They then uses tabloid style interpretations to make statements e.g. on Page 14 they write:

For example, Nabhani was closely associated with Sheikh Muhammad Hajj al-Amin Hosseini between 1945 and 1948.

They quote reference 10: Suha Taji-Farouki, A Fundamental Quest page 2.

Lets look at what Suha Taji actually wrote bottom of Page 1 to top of Page 2:

“With the assistance of former colleagues from Al-Azhar, al-Nabhani secured an appointment as court clerk in the Islamic court in Bisan, then Tabariyya. He aspired to more than this, however, and soon submitted an appeal to the Supreme Muslim council, requesting it to acknowledge his competence in the legal sciences, and to appoint him as a judge. It is possible that this correspondence with the Council introduced him to Hajj Amin al-Husseini, who headed the organization. While one cannot ascertain precisely how and when they met, it is evident that a relationship of sorts developed between the two men: according to well-placed sources in Amman al-Nabhani was considered to belong to Hajj Amin’s camp during the period from 1945 to 1948”

Firstly, this paragraph does not say that Nabhani was “closely” associated with Hajj Al-Amin. It says

“it is evident that a *relationship of sorts* developed between the two men..”

Secondly, Suha does not reference this “well placed source.” Surely as “researchers” you should be looking for references to back up claims about a person’s associations? Surely you should not be relying on a secondary source of unreferenced material? This is just the first example of the amateurish nature of this reports research and using any means necessary to form conclusions which fit their neo-conservative ideological view.

In fact pages 14, 15, 16, 28, 33, 36, 45, 49, 50, 51, 53, 54, 61, 65, 66, 72, 83, 93, 123, 147 all quote from works by Suha Taji Farouqi as a secondary source without checking the root source.

They even quote the well known reference inventor Maajid Nawaz on pages 19, 46, 53, 56,61,67,93,110,117. The TraditionalIslamism and abu-ibrahim blogs have ample referenced evidences of Maajid Nawaz’s false attributions and constructions.

Shockingly, blinded by desperation, they mention and quote from a serial reference inventor, Rashad Ali, on pages 63,67,93, whose lies have also been exposed on the TraditionalIslamism blog many times.

Clearly, this is very lazy research. In fact, borrowing from serial reference inventors, without actually checking and confirming the source, is amateurish research.
Evidence of selective quoting is also on display.

At the end of page 17, the neo-conservatives write:

“In reality, HT’s state is a theocratic dictatorship. Article 35 of HT’s draft constitution stipulates:

The Khalifah [Caliph] is the State. He possesses all of the authority of the State..”

They selectively reference Article 35 of the Draft Constitution to backup their statement that

“In reality, HT’s state is a theocratic dictatorship”

In the Princeton dictionary, a dictatorship is defined as:

“a form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)”

The same dictionary defines a theocracy as:

“a political unit governed by a deity (or by officials thought to be divinely guided)” or “the belief in government by divine guidance.”

Article 24 of HTs draft constitution states:

“The Khaleefah is deputised by the Ummah with authority for the enactment of the divine law.”

Article 26 states:

“Every mature male and female Muslim, who is sane, has the right to participate in the election of the Khaleefah and in giving him the pledge (ba’iah). Non-Muslims have no right in this regard.”

Article 28 states:

“Nobody can become Khaleefah without being appointed by the Muslims. Nobody can hold the power of the Khilafah unless it is convened to him legitimately, as is the case with any contract in Islam.”

Article 36 states:

“The Khaleefah is restricted in what he adopts by the Ahkam Shar’iah. He is forbidden to adopt any rule that is not soundly deduced from the divine texts. He is restricted to the rules he has adopted and to the method for deduction that he has chosen. Accordingly, he is prevented from adopting a rule deduced by a method that contradicts the method he has adopted, and he must not enact any command that contradicts the rules he has adopted.”

Article 101 states:

“The members of the Majlis al-Ummah are those people who represent the Muslims in respect of expressing their views to the Khaleefah when consulted. Non-Muslims are allowed to be members of the Majlis al-Ummah so that they can voice their complaints in respect to unjust acts performed by the rulers or the misapplication of the Islamic laws.”

Each article is backed by Islamic sources; including Article 26 which states that “non-Muslims have no right in this regard”. Please ask the “CSC research staff [who] are trained in Islamic affairs” to Islamic evidences which contradict any of these cannons.

Clearly, “HTs state” is not a theocratic dictatorship as the Khaleef cannot assume power by claiming to be appointed by God, but can only attain power through an election by an elected majority. According to the cited cannons, he is clearly accountable to the people and is entirely restricted in what he adopts by the Ahkam Shari’ah.

Therefore, by definition, “HTs state” is not a theocratic dictatorship.

A researcher is usually qualified to make interpretations about a particular subject, since it is assumed they are well read. But these neo-conservative researchers show their lack of depth and reading on page 18, when they state:

“..HT’s economic policies are incoherent and it is unclear how the party intends to finance the wide-ranging responsibilities it sets itself towards its citizens.”

Of course such policies will be “unclear” if one does not read about them. This is yet more evidence of lazy research, selective quoting and a desire to re-run second hand arguments to win brownie points.

Apart from “The Economic System” there are countless articles and books written by members of HT, which talk about revenue generation, funding and investment within the Islamic state. To name but a few easily found sources missed by these neo-conservative – so-called – researchers:

Abdul-Qadeem Zalloom’s “Funds in the Khilafah State”, talks about the rules governing the funds, their sources and types, from where they are collected, the time of their collection and the way they are collected and the sections in which they are kept.
Adnan Khan has written a book about “Constructing an Industrialised Muslim world”.

More recently HT has written “Towards a Tranquil Safe World under the Shade of the Economic System of Islam” where they clearly state Economic policy regarding funding and wealth generation using Islamic Juristic principles.

Pandering to their neo-conservative paymasters is also on clear display.

Without references, on pages 4 they state:

“..a perceived Western ‘War on Islam”

On page 7 they state:

“..a perceived Western ‘War on Islam”

on page 52 they state:

“..perceived Western influences.”

on Page 141 they state:

“..perceived Western-led ‘War on Islam’”

The use of the term “perceived” shows their desperate desire to manifest political correctness and legitimacy in neo-conservative circles that condemn Islamic shariah and justify the wars which have killed millions of innocent people around the world. This desperation clearly blinded their ability to make conclusive points, as statements are made about HT propagating the notion of a “perceived ‘War on Islam’” without actually stating *exactly* where HT say this.

I can go on and on about the amateurish nature of this report but I guess it is expected. It is actually not very difficult to rebut every point using contextualisation, legitimately referenced reality and Islamic sources. But I will savour that for another day Inshallah.
