Wednesday night has come and gone, and now we have the ratings to look into. I don’t think I’m spoiling much by saying that we are, once again, dealing with a big win for the powerhouse in the lineup, while a scrappy little underdog, that I personally can’t stand, might have eked out a moral victory in the 10E/9C timeslot.

So, you know the routine by now. Check here for the full scoop, make the jump for my rambling.

Did you really expect anybody else to win?

Let us first end the suspense. I know it is killing you. The big winner network last night? CBS averaging 11.3 million viewers and a 7.2 rating. This gave them a comfortable lead over NBC(7.4 million, 4.9), FOX(7.3 million, 4.4), and ABC(6.7 million, 4.4). And, since I’m feeling magnanimous today, I’ll let you know that the CW pulled down an average of 2 million viewers with a 1.4 rating.

As for the shows themselves, as the picture probably told you, the most watched show of the night was, as usual on Wednesdays, Criminal Minds(13.4 million, 8.3). That performance, coupled with the strong performance of CSI:NY(12.9 million, 8.5), was what helped propel CBS to yet another big win.

The 8E/7C timeslot has no shows at all worth watching, by the way, so the fact that the top shows were CBS’s horrible duo of comedies(which I refuse to mention by name here) is not quite as much of an affront to me as when they have Two and a Half Men as the most watched half hour comedy on TV.

In the “shows I just can’t help but love” category, Glee had another steady week pulling in 7.5 million viewers with a 4.5 rating. It is definitely a niche audience show, but it satisfies that niche so well.

Finally, for the second Wednesday in a row, Jay Leno(6.2 million, 4.0) was not the host of the lowest rated show in his timeslot. That honor, again, goes to Eastwick(5.1 million, 3.6). However, as I said in the intro, this is truly only a moral victory for Leno, as he still was the second lowest rated show on the big 4 networks last night.

Well, I couldn’t think up anything clever for the title of this post. And since the ratings played out pretty similar to what we’ve become accustomed to over the course of the season thus far, I’m having a hard time really being excited about the post in general…except for the fact that I get to mention Glee and the wonder that is that marvelous show!

So, you know the routine…if you want the details go here, if you want my jabbering read on.

Who won the night? Oh yeah...I remember now

So, TV shows were shown last night on the broadcast networks. Football was not shown. Anybody who has paid attention this season knows that this means that only one result is truly possible. CBS won the night, yet again. They really are a juggernaut when it comes to this TV season.

How did they win Wednesday? Well, it wasn’t on the strength of their shitty comedy duo of The New Adventures of Old Christine(7.3 million viewers/4.7 rating) and Gary Unmarried(7.2 million/4.5). No, that combo of shows couldn’t even beat NBC’s shitty nursing show Mercy(7.3 million/4.8).

CBS won the night, as they usually do, on the back of their crime procedurals. Criminal Minds(13.5 million/8.5) was the big winner of the night leading in total viewers, rating, and viewers 18-49(3.4 rating). It was followed in all those categories by fellow CBSer, CSI:NY(12.0 million/7.9/2.9 18-49). Those two shows combined to lead the Tiffany network to a big win averaging 10.9 million viewers and a 7.0 rating with a rating of 2.8 among 18-49 year olds, which tied them in the demo with FOX.

Coolest damn nerdy kids around

Speaking of FOX, my favorite new show of the season, Glee, held on to its ratings rise from last week to finish with 7.3 million viewers and a 4.5 rating. While I would like to see that rating climb a bit, I am happy that a show with such a niche audience has been able to sustain competitive numbers, and has been rewarded with a full season pickup.

The other bit of noteworthy news comes from Jay Leno. Jay finished in second place, out of three shows, in his timeslot. This marks the first time since the start of Jay facing new scripted programming that he has been able to beat any of it. His 5.7 million viewers with a 3.9 rating was good enough to beat Eastwick’s horrible 5.3 million viewers with a 3.7 rating. Take this good news for Jay with a grain of salt, however, as those numbers do make them the two least watched shows on the big 4 networks last night.

Still, congratulations to Mr. Leno for finally not finishing dead last.

So, now that I’ve detailed yesterday’s news, how about some of today’s, or more accurately, last night’s? My favorite new show, Glee, is included in this ratings run-down, as are some more of my precious procedurals. So, you know the drill, if you want all the details go here, otherwise, read on and I will do my best to educate you on last night’s ratings wonders.

Are you watching? You should be!

I will not beat around the bush. The most important rating for myself, and my household, is that of FOX’s Glee. It is vital that this show stays on the air. As a former show choir nerd, I need my weekly fix of my brethren singing their hearts out. Last night, Broadway nerds around the world rejoiced because we were treated to a guest spot by the lovely and talent Kristin Chenoweth. So, how did it do in the ratings? Well, it certainly isn’t a breakaway hit, but FOX seems okay with that, as they have ordered a full season. Last night, it pulled in 7.3 million total viewers to finish fourth in the timeslot. While I am disappointed that more people aren’t watching, I do take solace in the fact that it is the only show on broadcast television last night that improved its ratings over last week(6.64 million to 7.3 million viewers). I hope that the upward trend continues for one of the quirkiest shows on television right now.

The juggernaut can't be stopped

Moving on to the shows that can truly be called hits. Criminal Minds(13.6 million total viewers) and CSI:NY(12.9 million total viewers) paced CBS to yet another nightly win. It is remarkable how dominant the network has been early on in the season, winning almost every single night of the new season. For a network that used to be known to skew to older, smaller crowds with shows like Diagnosis Murder, CBS has made a remarkable turnaround in the past 10 years, led by crime dramas. CBS is now in the position NBC was 10 years ago, which is interesting when you consider that NBC is in the position that CBS was 10 years ago, but with a less clear plan to get out of the cellar.

NBC, for their part, did not have a single show break the 8 million total viewers mark, yet again. Their biggest hit of the night was the aging Law & Order: SVU(7.9 million total viewers), a show that not even I, a huge fan of all things procedural, can bring himself to watch anymore.

And, for his part in the saving of NBC, Jay Leno delivered horrific numbers yet again, finishing last in his timeslot, and falling from his previous night’s performance, with a total of 6 million viewers, a full 6.9 million viewers behind CSI:NY. At this point, Jay’s misery isn’t even giving me any pleasure. Okay, that was a blatant lie, I love to see him fail.

Somewhat odd that the first episode of the season is called ‘Epilogue’, but we catch up

Somewhat odd that the first episode of the season is called ‘Epilogue’, but we catch up with the team a month after we left them being gunned down by machine gun fire at the end of Season 5. Who lives and who dies, and most importantly, whodunnit? Super spoilers below!

The good news is, everyone seems alive. Damn these sneaky editors, they took so long to show Lindsay and Danny looked so depressed I thought she was a goner! But Danny’s just depressed because he was the only casualty from the team, getting shot in the spine when they all ducked, and losing movement in his legs.

Oh, my Danny boy! How could they do this to you! And that full beard, not working man. The slightly less bushy look works a lot better for him. Still, Lindsay still loves him and stands by him, and he does manage a little twitch at the end, so hopefully we’ll see him on his feet by the end of the season. I predict at least one heartwrenching episode where he tries and falls a lot and gets really depressed, and Lindsay has to smack him to his senses before he’s finally able to walk again. C’est la TV

And man talk about changes… STELLA AND ADAM OMG. That train of thought was : Adam… looking rather pleased with himself… is that a hooker… OMG STELLA SERIOUSLY? Well this is definitely one odd couple, but the dynamic could definitely be interesting. I”m still trying to get over STELLA AND ADAM? She’s way too much woman for that sweet geek~

They’re introducing a new girl though, a Haylen who just looks way too pretty to be crime scene clean-up. She’s an aspiring and ambitious CSI wannabe who’s eyeing Adam’s job, and while he’s kinda wary right now, you just know there’s going to be a Stella-Adam-Haylen triangle somewhere down the road. I’m getting a bit of a Calleigh (CSI Miami) vibe from Haylen, though without the annoyingly high voice thankfully, but we’ll see how long she sticks around…

No more Angel and Flack, but it looks like Don’s bouncing right back with the women…

So it turns out the shooting was just a rather unfortunate accident and plot by some bored idiots, and not a vicious crime or a Stella-related attack as Mac thought (I liked how they subtly had him be apologetic at the end). Last season’s cliffhanger opener must have been popular since they’ve chosen to reprise that again, leaving us to guess whether anybody got killed in that shootout. I’m glad they all made it though, and they’ve chosen to put Danny in a difficult spot, with Lindsay and baby Lucy in tow, so we’ll probably see more DL love, yay!

You can’t go wrong with CSI, really. I’ve watched a grand total of 14 seasons of CSI and CSI NY, and while it’s formulaic, it’s a comforting show to fall back on when you really don’t want to think about your TV shows!

Last night was a big night on my DVR, as I had the free time to burn through my Tuesday remainders, as well as watch the Wednesday night shows that I record(not having class till 9:30 on Thursdays is a blessing sometimes). There are a few shows in this collection that I expect to tug at my heartstrings a bit.

For one, I added The Good Wife to my viewing schedule this week, as I wanted to get a feel for what exactly the “fresh take” on “the philandering politician caught in the act as his dutiful wife stands by him” would be like. I realized that, because of the subject matter of a family torn apart, there would be moments in this show where I, an admitted softie, would be prone to welling of tears in my eyes. I also acknowledge that the pure sincerity and good heart of Glee, which is my absolute favorite new show, by the way, does, on occasion, have the same reaction of tears welling up in my eyes. I can say that, last night, both of them had scenes that achieved that exact effect. This was to be expected. What wasn’t to be expected was the sheer number of times I found myself tearing up at the other 4 shows that were in my DVR rotation. Why wasn’t it expected?

They were all procedurals, a genre not known for tugging at the heartstrings.(Warning: Slight spoilers ahead)First, let me say that this is a trend that started on Tuesday night, which is when I watched the season premiere of NCIS, which is one of the more underrated shows on television, but has never brought a tear to my eye. That streak, however, was broken on Tuesday when the intensity in which Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ team threw themselves into their mission of vengeance, and the sincere heartbreak that was painted on the face of Michael Weatherly, as Tony DiNozzo, when he was told that his partner, and object of his affection, Ziva David was lost at sea, combined to make me have tears well up in my eyes. I did not cry, but there was a definite moment when my vision was quite blurry.

I attributed my near-miss in crying at NCIS to my exhaustion, as I was watching it at the end of a very long day. Therefore, you can imagine my shock when I found myself tearing up again, the next day, at a scene in that show’s brand new spinoff, NCIS:LA. I was shocked to find my vision blurring for the second straight day, while watching a procedural. However, something about the look on Chris O’Donnell’s face as he told his boss, played by the always fascinating Linda Hunt, that nobody had ever told him what the G that he uses for his first name stood for made the NCIS franchise two for two in the bringing me to the brink of crying category.

This was starting to become a problem. How the hell was I supposed to watch all the procedurals I watch(and trust me, I watch a lot of procedurals) if they were all going to put me through the emotional ringer? So, I turned to my trusty Criminal Minds. While this show often makes me disgusted at the level of depravity that can be shown by human beings, it has never once brought me near the point of tears. I was sure that this was the show to break my tearing up streak for me. But no, unfortunately, it turns out that their is a vast conspiracy among TV shows, especially those of CBS, to make me cry at all times. When Hotch has a very touching scene with his ex-wife and son as he lays in a hospital bed, having been nearly killed by a madman, I lost my battle with keeping tears in my eyes even. For the first time in this run of welling up, I finally felt a tear stream down my cheek.

This was getting ridiculous. Why the hell was I crying at everything? I knew the solution to this problem. I turned to CSI:NY, a show that is known for the fact that it dwells on the scientific aspects of the crime much more than the personal story. But, as I’m sure you can guess, I lost the battle there too. Why? Because in the first few moments of the show they bring in Danny Messer, one of the CSIs who has been put in a wheelchair due to the hail of gunfire that ended last seasons cliffhanger. I cried a bit almost every time that Danny was on screen last night, not because I pitied him, but because I felt so deeply for the pain that he was having come to grips with his new status in life. Then I cried in a completely different way for him in his final scene of the episode, but I won’t spoil that for you if you haven’t seen it. It deserves to be seen on its own merits.

When crime dramas start making you cry, I think that maybe the writers have truly hit their stride in making characters matter to the audience. Or maybe I’m just a big softie who cried at the final episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air too.

Evening Roadies!! Hope you made it over Hump day. I know my last few posts have been a little on the looonnnggg side but this one will be a little shorter. Just the facts today…lol! Running (no pun intended) a little short on time this evening.

So, I completed my computer training at my part-time job last night. It took much longer than expected (almost 4 hours) and was how do I describe it? Well, let’s just say that watching grass grow…in the desert…in August…during a drought…would have been far more entertaining and enjoyable. Yeah…boring, painful, tiring, only begin to describe it. But it is finished. I go in tomorrow for four hours on the register. I’ll probably be wishing to be back in front of the computer before it’s over…LOL!!

After getting home, I just couldn’t seem to wind down and I had some trouble going to sleep so I couldn’t get up this morning for my run. And I didn’t get to work out at lunch. Today was the birthday of one of my dearest friends at work. Tink19 and I took her to lunch. This meant I had to deviate from my GI diet but I tried to make sensible choices. I had an orange cranberry turkey club sandwich (hold the bacon) with fruit and water. I ate half the sandwich and the fruit and took the other half of the sandwich to go.

As we came back we were talking about The Biggest Loser – which I actually don’t watch – and Tink19 was saying she couldn’t imagine being 100+ pounds overweight. She said to me “You should be so proud of yourself. You lost a whole person.” I said, “Yeah, and now all I have to do is lose a toddler.” I don’t know why but we just laughed and joked about that the rest of the drive. It may not translate as well here but I hope it at least gives you a chuckle.

We went back to work and I wrapped up the day – saved my company almost $2,000, worked on the 2010 Annual Meeting, wrapped up the negotiations on a contract for another 2010 meeting…normal work stuff. Around 4:30 I ate the second half of my sandwich to fuel my speed work tonight and hit the gym right after work.

The speed work was challenging but not difficult – just challenging enough. I warmed up with a brisk 5-minute walk, transitioned into a 5-minute run and then hit my first 400 meter run. I played with the speed to find the right spot. Basically held the faster speed for 3-minutes which was a bit beyond the 400 meters but made it easier to keep track of…walked 2 minutes to recover…speed work for 3-minutes…walk 2…for my 6 x 400 meters. By the time I got to the last 3-minute run I was feeling the burn but I pushed through it and ended with a 5-minute cool down. All total I got in 3.4 miles. And this is my third day in a row to work out. So, I’m continuing to make progress.

Tomorrow morning I’ll go swim. I was hoping to walk or do core training at lunch but remembered that I have a lunch meeting tomorrow when I flipped open my calendar today. So, there goes that. Then play friendly cashier tomorrow night – which means I’ll miss the Gamecock game and the CSI season premier (if you didn’t know Sara will be back and I’m going to miss it…but that’s life.) I think I really need to get a DVR…maybe I won’t stay up so late on my nights off either (like tonight…I know I”m going to stay up and watch CSI:NY…I have to find out who dies… ).

So, there you go. That’s about all that’s going on in my world. Until next time, take care of you.

Last night marked the second day that the Jay Leno primetime experiment that I talked about yesterday has faced legitimate competition from first run programming, instead of repeats as it has faced since the debut. What was the verdict for round two you ask? Well, if my headline doesn’t give it away, read a bit further and you’ll see.Leno, again, finished last in his timeslot. He, again, lost a significant number of his lead-in viewers. While he did gain in overall viewers from Monday night, he did not even have as many total viewers as FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen did earlier in the night. If you are not equaling the numbers of Hell’s Kitchen, the 4th place show from its timeslot, it is time to admit defeat and throw in the towel. How does NBC truly think Leno will hold up in the next two nights, when if faces much stiffer competition than the two freshman dramas that it lost to last night?

In fact, tonight Leno will be going up against the perennial ratings power, CSI:NY, and another highly anticipated freshman drama, Eastwick. I have to echo Nikki Finke’s piece that I linked to yesterday. I see absolutely no advertiser that is going to spend money, especially in a down economy, advertising on Leno’s show when they have the option of advertising on CSI:NY.

Sorry, Jay, but it seems your show just doesn’t work for the primetime schedule. Perhaps you should start looking into a return to late night.

Only 34 percent of African- American children today are raised in two-parent households, a sharp contrast to 1966, when 85 percent of black children were raised by two parents. In provocative but heartfelt words, Hill Harper takes on these urgent challenges, bringing a variety of issues out of the shadows. In The Conversation, Harper speaks to women and men with clear-eyed perspective, covering topics such as:

• The roots of the breakdown in the black family
• The myth that there are no mature, single, black male professionals
• What women can do to alleviate the “heaviness” they sometimes attach to dating
• What men can do to break the cycle of being a player
• The difference between sex and intimacy
• Bridging the communication gap
• Self-worth and net worth, and why you should never settle for an unworthy partner

Capturing the conversations Harper and his friends frequently have, this is destined to be one of the year’s most talked- about books—and one of Harper’s most healing contributions to black America.

The Conversation can be purchased TODAY!

See, this is why I make a lousy AMERICAN IDOL fan: I really, truly dislike every one of the final th

See, this is why I make a lousy AMERICAN IDOL fan: I really, truly dislike every one of the final three contestants. Choosing among them is definitely a “lesser evil” situation for me. Last night’s results show opened with an utterly bland rendition of “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now.” (Well, not quite; one of them was about to be stopped in her tracks…) David Archuleta — hereafter referred to as “David A.” — appeared nervous and so out of his element during his solos that he actually looked pained;David Cook and Syesha fared a little better, but the poor song was just brutalized. The entire performance was just bad elevator music — a freight elevator at that. Not losing the…er, momentum, IDOL returned from a commercial break so the kids could murder “How Far Is Heaven” as part of an in-house Ford commercial. Seriously — these are the final three?!

What’s this? Season 3 IDOL winner Fantasia has come on to screech some blaring, up-tempo number. Turns out the song was called “Bore Me,” and she must have feared the audience would take the title seriously, because she ran around the stage like her hair was on fire. Well, it was dyed neon red. I think Simon was wearing the same horrified expression I was.

Time to check in on CRIMINAL MINDS…. Oh, how fitting. The CW just announced90210, a sequel to BEVERLY HILLS 90210, and the here’s the original Mr. Walsh (i.e., James Eckhouse), looking upset about something. Brandon wants to borrow the car and visit the Peach Pit? I see: he’s playing Mr. Corbett, whose daughter was murdered by a serial killer. Corbett has a revolver in his glove box. I wonder if he’s going to perforate the killer who’s on trial. No…Reed stops him. Get thee back to Beverly Hills, dude…

And we’re back to IDOL. Ryan summons David A. to the stage, and there’s so much squealing that I wonder if GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Maurice Benard had accidentally wandered onto the stage. (You haven’t heard screaming until you’ve heard the balcony go berserk for Mo at the Daytime Emmys; it’s as loud as an NHL playoff game — but higher-pitched.) Now it’s time for a taped piece chronicling David’s trip home to Utah. Is he crying? There’s no crying in AMERICAN IDOL! Wait, that’s baseball. Okay, there is crying in IDOL. And apparently David wants the audience to cry because now he’s butchering John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Yep — lots of 12-year-old girls are weeping. That David is so mean…

Speaking of mean, the producers want Ryan to stretch the show to an entire hour, so I actually feel sorry for the desperate way he’s forced to vamp. All nine of the previous night’s performances have already been recapped via videotape, but now Ryan reads summations of the judges’ comments about all nine of the previous night’s performances…. And then it’s time for a clip package reviewing David A.’s “journey.” Hey, that’s strange: No mention of him winning $100,000 on STAR SEARCH. Why not?

Next up is Syesha, who went home to Florida to cry with the hometown crowds.

Hey, there’s Andrew, the Cook brother who was supposed to be on IDOL, before a producer bullied David into auditioning. Ryan invites him onstage for a minute. Yep, that makes everything all right; thanks, Ry-dog. The Cooks are from Missouri, so of course IDOL takes the state’s “Show Me” motto seriously by starting David’s clips. Healmost manages to hold back the tears. Coolest bit: He got to throw out the first pitch at a Kansas City Royals baseball game. (I’m a Yankee fan, but I still see the appeal.)

For about the 56th time, Ryan mentions that 56 million votes were cast for the final three. (A colleague of mine — who shall remain nameless — was among them. Since there was no “None of the Above” choice, I refrained.) And the final will pit… David vs. David! Goodbye, Syesha. She gets to sing one last song, during which she is remarkable composed. Then the camera zooms in for a final shot as she holds the last note — and she’s smiling! She must be counting the money already.

On BOSTON LEGAL, George Segal wants Denny Crane (William Shatner) to run for president of the United States! Yes, the Denny Crane. The one whose crazy antics are a matter of public record. The Denny Crane with the hooker fetish. (Why not just askEliot Spitzer, for frak’s sake?) Even for BOSTON LEGAL this is wacky. So I check what’s going on over at CSI:NY. Oh, yeah, continuing that “Cabbie Killer” plotline. We’re supposed to believe that not a single one of the 16 million people crammed onto the island of Manhattan each day will hail a cab until the killer is caught? Have the show’s writers ever been to New York? I know people who would sit next to a corpse in a taxi if it stopped for them during rush hour.

And now it’s time to stop this edition of Night Shift…

I felt like I had to see this AMERICAN IDOL thing through, so I tuned in for the results show. Wow, is it possible to pack in any more dull filler material to pad out a show? Footage of the hopefuls clowning on a plane? Really? Ryan kicked off the “festivities” with a group sing-along that massacred Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years.” David Archuleta was not the person you want to kick off a rock song; he looked awkward and sounded worse. Clearly he was waiting for the camera to zoom in for his adoring extreme closeup. Syesha was no better as second voice. David Cook was the only one who acquitted himself well during this number. The mid-tempo song meshed well with his rocker aspirations and limited vocal power. However, the choreography was rudimentary and the warm-and-fuzzy arrangement made the finalists sound like an antiseptic school choir. It was like they were sanitizing Steely Dan for the audience’s protection.

Eventually, sanity prevailed and Jason was sent packing. Apparently, the beatdown Simon administered after the previous evening’s debacle did not engender a flood of sympathy votes. I had to laugh as he flubbed his farewell song. He forgot the words to a mangled arrangement of “I Shot the Sheriff.” Way to prove viewers made the right call.

As a sports fan, I tuned in to CSI:NY because this week’s crime dealt with a basketball fan dying at center court during a game, but I found it difficult to focus because, although the procedural is set in New York, the interiors are clearly filmed elsewhere. Flak and Danny were supposed to be watching a professional basketball team called the New York Empires, but the team was clearly not playing at Madison Square Garden (which bills itself as “the World’s Most Famous Arena”). It’s also one of the busiest, so clearly the-powers-that-be were not able to book the Garden for filming.

BTW, if you thought the “N.Y. Empires” name was familiar, then you (like me) need to get a life. But you’re not wrong. The Empires was the nickname of the fictional baseball team in CLUBHOUSE, a short-lived series about a bat boy that ran on CBS during the 2004 season. The best thing about CLUBHOUSE was that it featured GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Kirsten Storms as a willful, trouble-making teen before she took on the role of willful, trouble-making Maxie.

You’ll get no more trouble from me until the next Night Shift.

Big Love

Breaking Bad

Damages

Dexter

House

Lost

Mad Men

Ator Drama

Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad
Gabriel Byrne – In Treatment
Hugh Laurie – House
Jon Hamm – Mad Men

Michael C. Hall – Dexter
Simon Baker – The Mentalist

Atriz Drama

Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men
Glenn Close – Damages
Holly Hunter – Saving Grace
Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer
Mariska Hargitay – Law And Order: SVU
Sally Field – Brothers & Sisters

Ator Coadjuvante Drama

Aaron Paul – Breaking Bad
Christian Clemenson – Boston Legal
John Slattery – Mad Men
Michael Emerson – Lost
William Hurt – Damages
William Shatner – Boston Legal

Atriz Coadjuvante Drama

Chandra Wilson – Grey’s Anatomy
Cherry Jones – 24 Horas
Dianne Wiest – In Treatment
Hope Davis – In Treatment
Rose Byrne – Damages
Sandra Oh – Grey’s Anatomy

Steve Carell – The Office
Tony Shalhoub – Monk

Tina Fey – 30 Rock
Toni Collette – United States of Tara

Rainn Wilson – The Office
Tracy Morgan – 30 Rock

Kristin Wiig – Saturday Night Live
Vanessa Williams – Ugly Betty
