At the meeting with David Wilden at Australia House today, we were told as follows:

All the applications in hand from people in Categories 1 – 4 as listed in the FAQ of 23rd September 2009 are now under control.

DIAC estimate that there are about 3,500 applications in Category 5 – that is, State sponsored but the main applicant’s occupation is not on the CSL. Mr Wilden has been told that DIAC are now in a position to make a start on processing the Cat 5 applications.

Mr Wilden said as follows:

• Roughly 3,500 is the number of actual visa applications, not the number of people involved. (I checked this with him specifically and he was definite about it.)
• They will start to process the Cat 5s according to the dates when the visa applications were lodged and they will deal with the oldest applications first.
• They will make no distinctions between the different visa subclasses – first come, first served means what it implies in a situation where the occupation is not on the CSL but the applicant does have State sponsorship.
• There is no foundation to the rumour that tradies may be excluded from Cat 5 processing – the tradies are to be treated identically to people whose occupations are in ASCO Groups 1-3.

Mr Wilden said that we have had him up late at night and out of bed before the birds in order to phone his colleagues in Australia to discover exactly what the plans are for the Category 5s because he had seen from Poms in Oz that everyone is particularly worried about this question in particular.

Mr WIlden stressed that he cannot say how long it will take to clear the backlog of about 3,500 Cat 5 applications. As & when they receive further applications from people with greater claim to priority, the applications with greater priority will be dealt with first.

The Famous Five were all PiO members (DanB1, Floater, Gollywobbler, RonnieRocket and Watneyni to put us in alphabetical order.) We were all sitting round the same table with Mr Wilden and we all heard him say exactly the same things. (Needless to say we repaired to a London hostelry afterwards to compare notes – thanks very much indeed to Watneyni for very kindly buying a round of drinks for us all.)

We were joined unexpectedly by a very helpful young man called Andrew. He has worked at the ASPC for a while but he is now in the UK, working with John Adams RMA at Immigration2Oz.com Andrew is not a PiO member [yet] but I am trying to encourage him/twist his arm! Andrew was involved with this part of the discussion so he heard Mr Wilden as well.

That they can’t say how long it will take to clear the 3,500 or so Cat 5 applications is reasonable enough. Mr Wilden promised to find out how many of the 108,100 skilled PR & Provisional visas for 2009/10 have been granted as at 30th November 2009 and he said he will let us know as soon as he knows. Once we have that figure it will probably be possible to start making reasonably sensible guesses.

After the meeting the Famous Five agreed that this information is probably the most significant piece of info from today and that we would get it onto the forum with all possible speed, in its own thread to make it stand out.

Australia WHV Working Holiday Visa Blitz

There are some pretty awful ads around at the minute – I won’t even start on the Ferrero Rocher attempt – but one of the worst has got to be for CSL sofas.

TV ads are generally done to build awareness of a brand or product and the memorable ones are usually either annoying or brilliant – this one certainly fits into the second category.

But I just can’t see how it sells sofas – and certainly not how it does it in an effective way.

Memorable – yes, annoying – yes, selling lots of sofas – i just can’t see it!



The husband, the father of my babies, the doughmaker, finally got an email today after weeks of waiting for a response or update from the immigration. Yay! He is officially in the Critical Skill List!! To find out more if your profession fits the list go here. According to the email his visa should be granted within 6-12 months.

Next should be a medical check-up and police clearance to ensure their government that you are no Mas Selamat.

Seu último cigarro foi aceso em uma sexta-feira 13 em que os raios de sol aqueciam até a mais escura sombra. Enquanto o farelo cinzento fazia a curva natural a caminho de esgotar a pequena brasa, as pessoas se amontoavam a sua volta, o espiavam com o auxílio da ponta dos pés e enchiam os olhos d’água em busca de um pouquinho de presença.

Vagaroso, arrastava as sandálias de couro pelos corredores com a mesma tranqüilidade de uma canção saudosa. Balançava a cabeça meio sem jeito, meio com charme, para ajeitar os finos e compridos fios de cabelo que insistiam em perder cor.

Sempre de calça jeans, disfarçava a regata neutra com uma camisa colorida, normalmente xadrez. Os colares envolvidos em seu pescoço e o pêndulo de pena suspenso por uma de suas orelhas reforçavam um estilo hippie, tanto ultrapassado quanto encantador.

Recostado na porta, aguardava o atraso por alguns instantes. Ainda baforando o hálito seco e amargo consequente do último trago de tabaco, beijava carinhosamente a testa de alguns que pouco a pouco adentravam a sala e seu mundo para lá viajarem durante cerca de 45 minutos.

Na companhia de palavras e expressões curiosas, transmitia um medo bom. Um temor instigante, intencional, com propósito. Só agora faz tanto sentido. Cauteloso, observava os questionamentos sem interferir nas conclusões subjetivas.  E segurando o queixo com a ponta dos dedos, analisava todos com um sorriso leve, enigmático, às vezes irônico.

Deve estar a fazer isso agora, tranqüilo, com os óculos em repouso no topo da sua cabeça como uma tiara. Ainda misterioso, deixa inquietação e medo no ar para sugerir alguma reflexão aos que tiveram a sorte de conhecê-lo.

O cigarro enfim apagou-se. Sobraram as cinzas, as flores e a saudade.

ΜΙΑ ΑΚΟΜΗ καλοκουρδισμένη επιχείρηση μαζικού μάρκετινγκ από αξιωματούχους του παγκόσμιου συστήματος υγείας, τις φαρμακευτικές εταιρείες και τμήμα των μέσων ενημέρωσης ή όντως υπάρχει το ενδεχόμενο μια πανδημία να εξαφανίσει από τον πλανήτη 70 εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους;

Το ερώτημα αφορά βέβαια τον ιό Η1Ν1, τον τρόμο που αυξανόμενα αυτός προκαλεί σε όλη την υφήλιο και το τεράστιο οικονομικό όφελος που προκύπτει για ορισμένους.

Το Reuters είχε επισημάνει σε παλαιότερο δημοσίευμά του πως μια σφοδρή πανδημία γρίπης θα μπορούσε να αφήσει πίσω της 70 εκατομμύρια νεκρούς, να κοστίσει 3 τρισ. δολάρια και να συρρικνώσει το παγκόσμιο ΑΕΠ κατά 5%. Ακολούθησε έκτακτη σύνοδος, κατά την οποία ο Παγκόσμιος Οργανισμός Υγείας ανέβασε το επίπεδο συναγερμού στο «6», ήτοι η πανδημία βρισκόταν προ των πυλών.

Το κατάλληλο κλίμα είχε ήδη δημιουργηθεί και οι κρατικές παραγγελίες εμβολίων και αντιγριπικών φαρμάκων άρχισαν να καλπάζουν. Την ίδια στιγμή οι χρηματοδοτούμενες από τις φαρμακευτικές εταιρείες επιστημονικές μελέτες αυστραλών και βρετανών ειδικών κατέληγαν στο συμπέρασμα ότι τα εμβόλια κατά της γρίπης είναι ασφαλή και αποτελεσματικά.

Οι ΗΠΑ ανακοίνωσαν ότι θα διαθέσουν 10 δισ. δολάρια για έρευνα και 1,5 δισ. δολάρια για την αγορά 250 εκατ. εμβολίων από πέντε φαρμακευτικές εταιρείες: τη βρετανική Glaxo Smith Kline, τη γαλλική Sanofi-Pauster, την αυστραλέζικη CSL, την αμερικανική Medimmune (θυγατρική της αγγλοσουηδικής AstraZeneca) και την ελβετική Novartis.

*Τα μέσα ενημέρωσης μιλούσαν τότε για υποχρεωτικό εμβολιασμό 300 εκατομμυρίων Αμερικανών και η CSL εξασφάλισε συμβόλαια για την πώληση αντιγόνου -βασικό συστατικό για την παραγωγή αντιγριπικών- συνολικής αξίας 180 εκατ. δολαρίων από τις ΗΠΑ.

*Η Sanofi δέχθηκε παραγγελίες εμβολίων συνολικής αξίας 690 εκατ. δολαρίων, ενώ η Medimnune ανέλαβε την παράδοση ακόμη 29 εκατ. εμβολίων προς την ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση, ανεβάζοντας τη συνολική της παραγγελία σε περισσότερα από 40 εκατομμύρια, αξίας περίπου 453 εκατ. δολαρίων.

*Λίγο νωρίτερα, η Novartis είχε και αυτή διασφαλίσει παραγγελίες αξίας 690 εκατ. δολαρίων, προσβλέποντας σε συνολικά 900 εκατ. δολάρια από τις ΗΠΑ και 1,2 δισ. δολάρια διεθνώς.

*Μεγαλύτερα κέρδη αποκόμισε αναμφίβολα η βρετανική Glaxo Smith Kline, που επένδυσε «έγκαιρα» πάνω από 2,5 δισ. δολάρια για έρευνα, εξαγορές και επιπλέον παραγωγική ικανότητα, περιμένοντας την… κερδοφόρα γρίπη. Η «προνοητικότητά» της ανταμείφθηκε ήδη, αφού οι πωλήσεις του αντιιικού της σκευάσματος Relenza μόνο στο β’ τρίμηνο του 2009 εκτοξεύθηκαν από 4,6 εκατ. δολάρια πέρυσι σε 95 εκατ. δολάρια φέτος. Ταυτόχρονα, οι παγκόσμιες παραγγελίες των εμβολίων Pandemrix αυξήθηκαν από τον Αύγουστο 50%, φτάνοντας στις 440 εκατ. δόσεις. Μάλιστα, τιμολογεί περίπου 10 δολάρια τη δόση στις αναπτυγμένες χώρες, ενώ -σύμφωνα με δημοσιεύματα του βρετανικού τύπου- το κόστος δεν ξεπερνά τα 1,6 δολάρια.

Η GSK περιμένει εκτόξευση των πωλήσεών της στο 1,5 δισ. δολάρια κατά το τρέχον τρίμηνο και συνολικά έσοδα περίπου 5 δισ. δολαρίων από την πανδημία. Προς την κατεύθυνση αυτή άλλωστε, υπερτριπλασίασε φέτος την ετήσια παραγωγή του Relenza (η τιμή λιανικής του οποίου κυμαίνεται στα 64 δολάρια) σε 190 εκατομμύρια δόσεις.

*Η ελβετική Roche, παραγωγός του γνωστού Tamiflu, αναβάθμισε ήδη δύο φορές φέτος τις εκτιμήσεις της για τις πωλήσεις, οι οποίες τετραπλασιάστηκαν στα 1,9 δισ. δολάρια τους πρώτους εννέα μήνες του 2009, ενώ ειδικά στο γ’ τρίμηνο δεκαπλασιάστηκαν. Ενα κουτί με 10 ταμπλέτες Tamiflu κοστίζει στις ΗΠΑ περίπου 90 δολάρια.

*Στο παιχνίδι μπαίνουν όμως και οι μεγάλες αμερικανικές φαρμακοβιομηχανίες, με τρεις εξ αυτών να ανακοινώνουν τον προηγούμενο μήνα σημαντικές συμφωνίες. Η Abbot Laboratories αγόρασε βελγική ομόλογή της και τις δραστηριότητες στην παραγωγή εμβολίων γρίπης έναντι 6,6 δισ. δολαρίων, η Johnson & Johnson επένδυσε 444 εκατ. δολάρια στην ολλανδική Crucell, που αναπτύσσει και παράγει εμβόλια, ενώ η Merck προχώρησε σε συμφωνία διανομής στις ΗΠΑ εμβολίων και άλλων σχετικών σκευασμάτων της CSL. Οσο για τη μεγαλύτερη φαρμακοβιομηχανία του κόσμου Pfizer, αυτή βάζει πόδι στον ανταγωνισμό με την εξαγορά της Wyeth έναντι 68 δισ. δολαρίων πριν λίγες εβδομάδες.

I’m going to do things a little out of order this week for obvious reasons. So here is the rundown of the material we covered the final week.

Chapter 41: Voelz’s Fundamental Greek Grammar in 9 weeks.

The last week for me centered around my review of parsing verbs/nouns.  Review of the subjunctive, participles, imperatives, and principal parts. Add in homework for every night made for some long days. Although, I did do a good job of stopping at a decent hour so as to not overstudy and wear myself down. I spent the night before the qualifier relaxing with Linda watching Cougartown. Mindless show to distract me from worrying about the qualifier. After the third episode I got up and went to sleep. Linda thought I was studying, but I felt the need to get a good nights rest.

Woke up around 5:30am. Got dressed and went for a walk around campus. Came home and then got ready and I was out of the door by 6:30am. Armed with only the principal parts flash cards that still was giving me issues to review.  I attempted to get into Wartburg Hall, but evidently it doesn’t open to until 7am.  So, I wound up going to the classroom and reviewed there. Started to feel un-easy so I got up for a walk and by that time Wartburg was open.  I walked in to get a Java update (Greek class joke). Did the head nod to my fellow Greek classmates who were congregating getting that last meal before Go time.

I was one of the guys who took his exam at 7:30a as I thought I would need all the time in the world. I was methodical about taking the exam. I didn’t second guess any answers I selected. I didn’t feel great about the exam, but I felt I passed. Took me roughly 2 hours to complete the exam. I missed chapel and then later found out I didn’t pass the main qualifier. I did score high enough that I was eligible enough to take the re-take written by Dr. Gibbs.

Crushed spirit and physically drained … I really had lost hope.  Like always Pastor Gibbs put his arm around the two of us who would be doing the re-take. Letting us know we were still baptized.   He also pointed out where we went wrong on the exam. Go figure I had been struggling with participles and I got those correct. It was the subjunctives that killed me along with imperatives and minor things here and there. Gibbs suggested I go for a walk around campus to clear my mind and focus on the material that tripped me up.

I did have Gibbs call Linda to explain. I just wasn’t in a place mentally or emotionally to say to her honey, I may have added on another year to our time at seminary.  Along with the fact the more I talked the more I felt material was slipping out of my head.  I basically had from 11-12:3o to compose myself, put the first qualifier aside, and take care of business.  It is no secret I absolutely fear Gibbs exams. So, my outlook wasn’t good in my mind.

Needless to say, the time had come for the re-take. Much thanks to my classmates for letting me be during the time after finding out I hadn’t passed until the re-take to let me re-focus.  Even bigger thanks goes out to the prayers that went up on my behalf and my fellow Greek student. Couple of guys even walked through the classroom saying, “you’ve got this. Parse parse and Parse somemore.” Time pretty much time stood still during the second exam.  I finished and felt very confident.  As I walked with Gibbs for him to grade our exams. We sat in the Registrar’s office like nervous school girls. Gibbs came out made us smile and handed us our exams. We PASSED.  Almost in tears I shook Gibbs hands. 

There has been a common theme/motto on campus about Life Together and Community this year. Never in my life have I seen it in action than on the day of the qualifier. The support and prayers were so powerful. The collective togetherness of being their for a fellow brother struggling is more than anyone can ask for…

As I appeared in the quad to my anxiously waiting classmates to reveal the wonderful news.  Before I left the Registrar’s office I called my lovely and supportive wife. She was relieved and happy. I began to check my phone and for the classmates that were alreadyon the road home for the break… Surprising enough they never forgot their fellow brothers either checking in via txt messages or phone calls. Life Together at its best.  We’ve all been told those that go through Greek together form a bond that lasts throughout our times at seminary and through our ministries in the parishes.  After experience this myself, I now understand it.

Summary: I PASSED.

What is Next? Greek Readings and Hebrew…

Elementary Hebrew 12 credits: The essentials of Hebrew morphology, syntax, and vocabulary.

Greek Readings:2 credits: Practice in the “art of translation” by appliying fundamental skills in Greek to basic interpretation of biblical texts. Readings selected will lay the foundation for hermeneutics and subsequent courses.

I will attend to keep up the weekly blog. Maybe try and get them out on a weekly basis and not do 3-4 weeks in a night. Thank goodness for a good memory. We have two week break starting on Monday and we return for the Winter quarter the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Como vocês puderam observar no outro post, o texto sobre o GTS ficou grande o bastante para não dividir a sua atenção com mais nenhum modelo. Também pudera, o carro é simplesmente espetacular.

Mas hoje vamos falar sobre a história do mais fabuloso dos BMW’s CSL (Coupe Sport Leicht) já produzidos para as corridas. O carro é tão marcante que a BMW criou um M5 atual com algumas caractarísticas do carro antigo. Na verdade, foi uma homenagem da BMW, lembrando os 25 anos de criação do BMW 3.5 CSL de 1975.

Para competir no automobilismo americano, a BMW escolheu o seu projeto que alcançou sucesso na Europa, através do ETCC – European Car Cup Touring.  Apenas quatro CSL foram produzidos pela BMW América do Norte para competir na série IMSA, a International Motor Sports Association, na classe GTO.

Foi o primeiro produto da BMW Motorsport GmbH, uma subsidiária da BMW dedicada ao desenvolvimento dos esportivos mais encapetados da BMW e que hoje é mais conhecida como a famosa divisão M. O carro de base era um BMW CS 3.0, que sofreu a devida depenação e recebeu um belo kit aerodinâmico que acabou dando ao modelo o apelido de Batmóvel. Além disso, o carro recebeu uma das mais marcantes pinturas que um carro de  corrida poderia receber.

Na parte mecânica, o motor era o novíssimo M49 que foi desenvolvido com uma configuração de 24 válvulas DOHC para a temporada 1974. Em 75 o motor recebeu alterações para participar em Le Mans, passando de 3.0 para 3.5 litros. A BMW dos EUA viu com bons olhos essa modificação, acreditando que o carro poderia se dar bem contra um punhado de Porsches no solo americano.

A BMW obteve várias vitórias ao longo do ano, mas não conseguiu derrotar o Porsche da equipe Brumos Racing Porsche RSR, que acabou vencendo o Camel Trophy GT Challenge por pontos. Porém, a equipe estava satisfeita com o desempenho e o sucesso alcançado, mostrando que era bastante competitiva a ponto de vencerem em 1976 as 24 Horas de Daytona. Mas isso já é outra história.

O NOVO

E o carro que foi criado para celebrar os 25 anos desta bela passagem pelas pistas esta logo abaixo. Como não podia deixar de ser, os destaques incluem um motor maior, de 5,5-litro, além de um extenso programa de redução de peso.

O motor passou a contar com respeitáveis 580cv e para resfriar toda essa cavalaria instalaram um radiador maior, que esta instalado atrás do local que se encontrava a placa. Sua carroceria passou a conta com vários pontos em fibra de carbono, como o teto por exemplo.

Já a transmissão Getrag de dupla embreagem é oriunda do M3 e passou por modificações para suportar o torque de 55,3 Kgfm.

Na próxima oportunidade falaremos de outro BMW que arrebentou nas pistas no final da década de 70.

Side Note: We spent Saturday on the road heading to Bloomington, IN. I was very distracted during class on Friday morning as we were awaiting the birth of our first nephew. He was a stinker and put his momma (Danielle) through 21 hours of labor. Well, Danielle has always been there for us above and beyond during all of our children’s births. Our Greek class prayed for the Hulsmans before class and shortly after Chapel was over Jaxson Hulsman finally decided to join the world. It was wonderful meeting my our new nephew. Linda drove while I worked on vocabulary and then slowly worked through the Sell Workbook.  After spending time in Bloomington, IN we drove back and arrived back in STL around 1am.

On Sunday, we (the seminarian fieldworkers) were finally introduced to Faith-Oakville and the multi-sites in Edwardsville and Columbia… At all 3 services. It was fun and painful all at the same time. Mainly because I was tired from the normal Greek wear down and then the trip to Bloomington.

Pour son centenaire le 28 novembre dernier, vu l’immense admiration que je lui porte, j’avais publié 2 articles:

This week has been somewhat of a break through in Greek even if it didn’t exactly show in exams. There has been a number of changes in my test taking. Use headphones to cancel out distractions around me. Move to a different room. Start earlier so not to feel rushed. Relaxation techniques to reduce the anxiety before the tests. Now the latest change. Move into a different room by myself so that I can talk things through verbally. This seems to be working after a quick test with Dr. Gibbs.  Huge thank you goes out to Rev. Gibbs and his wife Renee for recognizing this based on in class performance/participation.  I hadn’t given up, but I was feeling very defeated just before.

Two weeks to go and the realization that all the long hours studying, memorizing, and waking up in the morning thinking about paradigms will all be summed up in one exam. More material this week along with our cruising speed of 80 mph.  It is round 8 and Greek has definitely gotten the better of me.  I must be Rocky Balboa as I just keep coming back for more.

Oct 28, 2009: About a week ago I reported that swine flu vaccine ingredients are not safe for pregnant women and children. Yesterday I learned that the government will order 200,000 doses of non-adjuvanted swine flu vaccine called Panvax from Australian drug company CSL.

Panvax is licensed for use in Australia and the United States but is unlicensed here in Canada, according to The Canadian Press. The Health Minister had to sign an interim order to allow the vaccine into the country. Panvax does not contain the adjuvant squalene, but does contain thimerosal (mercury).

Other ingredients in Panvax that could harm an unborn baby other than thimerosal include neomycin, polymyxin B sulfate and beta-propiolactone.

Neomycin is an antibiotic that can cause damage to the kidneys and/or nerves.  Side effects are decreased urination, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, feeling of fullness in the ears, dizziness, numbness, skin tingling, muscle twitching, or seizures which may be signs of kidney or nerve damage. Neomycin is in pregnancy category D which means it may be harmful to an unborn baby.

Polymyxin B Sulfate is also an antibiotic. It can cause serious side effects, including kidney failure. Other side effects include  irritability, weakness, drowsiness, numbness in the arms or legs, or blurred vision. The safety of Polymyxin B Sulfate  has not been established for use during pregnancy.

Beta-Propiolactone is a disinfectant. The CDC labels beta-propiolactone as a potential human carcinogen. In rats, acute oral administration or intraperitoneal injection of beta-propiolactone caused muscular spasms, respiratory difficulty, convulsions, and death. Acute intravenous injection caused kidney tubule and liver damage. Subcutaneous injection of beta-propiolactone  in rats and mice produced cancer at the sites of administration. Single intraperitoneal injections in suckling mice produced lymphatic tumors and liver cancer. A study in 1984 in the Journal of Neurological Sciences showed that some neurological complications in young adults was caused by antirabies vaccines containing beta-propiolactone.

Wow, things are really picking up speed. There is three weeks left in the quarter and the stress is starting to mount.  I feel somewhat comfortable with the material. Well, I feel comfortable with parsing just about everything. At this point it is getting the vocabulary to stick and translating. I’ve finally turned the corner on homework taking 2-3 hours to complete. Now, I can get it done in around 1.5 hours or less. It still takes me a few days to grasp the material.  Other than that another week of Greek slapping me in the face on a exam. Yet, I’m doing well on the quizzes.  Still sticking to studying as much as possible to make it work in my head. The studying has got to pay off with retention at some point. My hope is it will be during the qualifier and Greek Readings.

We’ve been hearing our classmates who have taken Greek before bring up pluperfect. I have come to dislike the term Pluperfect now. So, it is weird to have finally covered the material. Notice that was Chapter 27, there is 42 chapters in our textbook.
