I have a few posts jotted down in my journal but as of yet have not been able to sit down long enough to flesh out the details and get them posted. One is about ASP.net applications and the other is about a handy css trick I’ve come up with for drop down menus in jQuery. Maybe I’ll have more time this weekend after I launch this latest project. More on that later. Talk to you soon.

It’s become common practice on modern websites to indicate the navigation section that you are curre

It’s become common practice on modern websites to indicate the navigation section that you are currently viewing via an .active class. A website with good semantic markup is almost certainly using a styled list to display navigation (even if it is imaged based). The markup might look something like this:

Home

About

Articles

Contact

This would indicate that it is the code snippet off the Articles section of the website. It is perfectly valid markup. Presumably somewhere in the CSS there is a corresponding class named .active that has some elements that make it standout from any other list-item.

The problem with this is that each page has to contain the navigation source and then have the list-item with the .active class moved to indicate which section it is. This may be fine for a small website where adding a new section only means adjusting the source on 3 or 4 other pages to include your new navigation item. Also on large websites this sort of thing is usually handled dynamically via the content management system.

But what about medium sized websites?

If you’re a intermediate HTML/CSS developer and have a medium sized website (10-15 pages) with content that doesn’t change so often that you feel you need to build a CMS in, but does change often enough that you want to make the hassle of HTML editing as minimal as possible… leaving the navigation in every page can be a major headache. Ideally you would like the navigation to reside inside an include (header.html, navigation.html, etc…) that all of the pages call to access the universal items.

But if the navigation is in one place you can’t switch with list-item get’s the .active class. Yes you can.

Custom body id’s are the solution. If we altered our markup to something like this:

…

Home

About

Articles

Contact

We can target and highlight the current page via the body id with some simple CSS.

ul#nav a {
background-position: left top;
color:#fff;
width:150px
height:40px
display:block;
line-height:40px;
}

body#home ul#nav .home a,
body#about ul#nav .about a,
body#articles ul#nav .articles a,
body#contact ul#nav .contact a {
background-position: right top;
color:#000;
}

Now the only HTML that has to vary with the different pages is the body id. Which isn’t nearly as large a problem as the navigation being included each time. Body id’s are not something that you’re ever going to need to change once created, and if you make a new page simply give it a new ID and then add that to the list in your CSS and your centrally located navigation file.

I’ve prepared an example of how this technique can be used in a visually interesting way. You can also download my source here (with the includes). I used .PHP file extensions because it makes for easier includes (in my opinion). No PHP knowledge is needed to use.

*The tab’s used in the example are taken from Doug Bowman’s Sliding Doors article, which can be found here. I wanted to demonstrate how this technique can be applied to more graphically intense lists, so I took his source and adjusted to switch with the body id.

Using :after

This css2 property allows us to add extra content at the end of the element via css. we do not hav to alter markup in html such as adding

<div class”clear”>
or
just a simple step: add the following code to the element class.
.clearfix:after {
content: “.”;
display: block;
height: 0;
clear: both;
visibility: hidden;
}

here clearfix:after adds a content at the end of the element
with clearboth and height 0 and is hidden.

but it treats ie7 differently so the code added will be
<!–[if IE]>

<![endif]–>

so the original code looks like:
<!– main stylesheet ends, CC with new stylesheet below… –>
<!–[if IE]>

.clearfix {
zoom: 1;     /* triggers hasLayout */
display: block; /* resets display for IE/Win */
} /* Only IE can see inside the conditional comment
and read this CSS rule. Don’t ever use a normal HTML
comment inside the CC or it will close prematurely. */

Wie Sie mit CSS doppelte Rahmen für Grafiken erstellen

In meinem heutigen Artikel möchte ich Ihnen zeigen, wie Sie mit CSS doppelte Rahmen für Bilder/Grafiken erstellen können.

Hier meine 3 Beispiele ansehen

Anleitung:

img {
        border:2px solid #72a143;
}

Wenn man nun für die Grafik ein Padding von 1px einsetzt und mit der Hintergrund-Farbe ‘Gelb’ ergänzt,

img {
        border:2px solid #72a143;
        padding:1px;
        background:#ffeda5;
}

HTML-Quellcode:

CSS:

.image1 {
border:2px solid #72a143;
padding:1px;
background:#ffeda5;
}
.image2 {
border:2px solid #0055c2;
padding:1px;
background:#fff;
}
.image3 {
