Create rounded corners with CSS border-radius

Like box-shadow, border-radius is another new CSS3 property that lets the browser draw rounded corners on elements. The benefits are obvious – there’s no need to manually create images, and the curvature of each corner can be tweaked simply by changing a few values.

Again, like box-shadow, the property isn’t yet finalized, so you’ll need to use the -moz- and -webkit- prefixes for Firefox and Safari/Chrome, respectively. Here’s an example:

Here’s the corresponding source code:

	background: #eee;
	border: 1px solid #ccc;
	padding: 10px;
	text-align: center;
	-moz-border-radius: 5px;
	-webkit-border-radius: 5px;
}

border-radius uses the same shorthand syntax as border-width. If you want, you can define a different radius for each corner:

border-radius set to 0 10px 20px 40px

(Note: Safari 4 doesn’t seem to read the border-radius shorthand unless the same value is used for each corner, like in my first example. The same code works in Chrome, however, which is also WebKit-based, like Safari. Interesting).

It’s a great way to add a subtle, elegant touch to your site designs (like I’ve done on this site). Browsers that don’t support it will simply continue drawing square corners.

دو ویژگی CSS برای زبانهای راست به چپ از جمله فارسی

اخیرا در ورژن جدید فایرفاکس (3.6) دو مقدار از ویژگی text-align که جزو استاندارد CSS 3 هستند، پشتیبانی شده است. این دو ویژگی از آن جهت می تونه مهم باشه که برای طراحی سایتهایی با پشتیانی هر دو زبانهای راست به چپ و چپ به راست، کار طراح وب رو بسیار آسان می کنه.

این دو مقدار برای ویژگی text-align عبارتند از:

start: تعیین خواهد کرد که متون در سمت آغاز نوشته با توجه به جهت به کار رفته تراز شوند. به عبارت بهتر در صورتی که مقدار direction که به عنصر مورد نظر اعمال می شود برابر با ltr باشه، مقدار start دقیقا همانند left عمل خواهد کرد و متون به سمت چپ تراز خواهند شد. در صورتی هم که مقدار direction برابر با rtl باشد، مقدار start دقیقا همانند right عمل خواهد کرد و متون به سمت راست تراز خواهند شد.

به مثالهای زیر توجه کنید:

متن در سمت چپ قرار می گیرد.

<p style="text-align:start">Right side of page.</p>

متن در سمت راست قرار می گیرد.

end: تعیین خواهد کرد که متون در سمت آخر صفحه یا نوشته با توجه به جهت به کار رفته تراز شوند. به عبارت بهتر در صورتی که مقدار direction که به عنصر مورد نظر هاعمال می شود برابر با ltr باش، مقدار end دقیقا همانند right عمل خواهد کرد و متون به سمت راست تراز خواهند شد. برای مقدار rtl نیز عکس این مطلب اعمال خواهد شد.

همانطور که مطمئنن متوجه شدید عملکرد این دو مقدار بستگی به مقدار direction دارد. این مورد باعث خواهد شد که بدون نیاز به نوشتن کدهای اضافی برای css به راحتی مقصود خود رو اعمال کنید.

پشتیبانی مرورگرها از start و end

به علت نسبتا جدید بودن این دو مقدار مرورگرهای کمی از آنها پشتبانی می کنند. در این میان فقط سه مرور Firefox, safari و chrome این دو مورد رو پیاده سازی کرده اند.

مرورگرهای safari و chrome به علت داشتن موتور مشترک Webkit از نسخه 525 به بعد آن پستیانی به عمل می آورند. به عبارت بهتر Safari نسخه 3.1 و chrome نسخه 1
مرورگر Firefox مقدار start رو از نسخه 1 و مقدار end رو از نسخه 3.6 به بعد پیاده سازی کرده است.

Make CSS Rounded Corners – Webmonkey

There are literally dozens of ways to create the rounded corner look. Your options range from the very primitive (just create static backgrounds in Photoshop and apply them on a per-element basis) to the very progressive — CSS 3 can do rounded corners with just one line of code.

Unfortunately, not all browsers support CSS 3. So, unless you’re doing a fun site for your own experimentation, you’re going to have to resort to one of the more traditional workarounds.

When I am reading the css documentation in W3c site. I met with some of the interesting selectors like nth-child and :target.

With the nth-child selector we can add different css for the even and odd elements. For example in a table we want to display different background color for the alternate rows. This we can do simply with the css. I used to write in the code to add odd class for the odd row, even class for even row using if conditions. This is really cool. We can see example at http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/007/evenodd.

With the :target selector we can create a tabs view without using any javascript code. We can see an example at http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/007/target

Unfortunately these selectors does not work with IE. I was very happy by seeing these selectors but it IE disappointed me a lot. Just because of IE I need to write code to add different classes for the even and odd rows. I tested with IE8 also but no luck, might need to wait till next release of IE. Just because of IE I can’t use these selectors.

但是对于网站前端开发人员来说，这个幻灯片绝对值得一看，它主要讲解了一些CSS3的新属性，包括伪类/伪元素和一些新增的属性，比如transform，shadow 等。实例和配图很棒，相信对CSS3还有些疑惑的朋友，看了这个之后会很好的理解CSS3的吧。

eCSStender is an open source JavaScript library, created by Aaron Gustafson, that helps browsers (including IE6) pay attention to the CSS code you write.

It aims to prevent the usage of browser-specific properties & hacks but make leaner & meaner CSS possible.

eCSStender is an extendible library with its API support & has ready-to-use extensions like CSS3 selectors, @font-face, rotation & more.

How does it work?

it loops through the document’s stylesheets and begins collecting information
parses the rules it understands
checks if the parsed rules are supported by the extensions
applies the supported rules to the document via JavaScript

It is a very flexible library & well-documented that makes discovering the capabilities easier.

The download package includes examples which you may be surprised to see CSS rotation working even in IE6.

Here’s a hack to detect which is the locale text direction (e.g. left-to-right for English or right-to-left for Hebrew) using JavaScript:

A limitation is that it doesn’t work if there is a style sheet present which explicitly assigns a text-align value other than “start” for paragraphs directly in the document body. You could probably tweak the idea to use something more obscure like an address block to reduce chances of this happening.

CSS3: La propiedad text-shadow

Bueno amiguetes, hoy os voy a hablar de la propiedad text-shadow de CSS3. Una propiedad que está cogienda fuerza rapidamente y que la usa desde WordPress, hasta tuenti, pasando por infinidad de blogs y hasta la web de mi abuela la del pueblo (si tuviera web o yo abuela en el pueblo).

¡Y eso que la propiedad data de 1997! Aunque no se ha hecho estándar hasta 2009, eso si.

Y es que desde que los navegadores (ejem… Internet Explorer?) empezaron a implementar propiedades del nuevo estándar, esta propiedad ha ido ganando popularidad, sobretodo por su facilidad de uso y sus resultados.

Ese efecto de relieve está causado por esta propiedad y su uso es el siguiente.

.selector{
 text-shadow: #color X Y desenfoque;
}

.selector{
 text-shadow: #CCCCC 20px 10px 2px;
}

Las coordenadas X e Y hacen referencia al desplazamiento de la sombra respecto al texto y el desenfoque cual es el radio de este que le vamos a dar. Por ejemplo si le asignamos un radio de 1px el texto será legible, pero si le asignamos un radio de 20px solo veremos una mancha. Es una función similar al efecto blur de cualquier programa de edición.

Esta propiedad ya funciona en Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera y el resto de navegadores decentes. Además, me gusta ver como cada vez se desprecia mas a Internet Explorer y no se intenta que las páginas se vean igual que en el resto de navegadores.
