Hallo zusammen!

It was Halloween and time to yarnstorm. And, I thought, what better use for a Halloween yarnstorm than to exorcise a few demons and nightmares in the company of good friends and through the medium of warm woolliness.

The nightmares for me started with Sapphire and Steel, spooky tales which scared the crap out of me when my Dad let me watch it while Mum was on a night shift. One of the stories featured resentful ghosts of another time haunting a deserted station platform, which brought to mind the ghostly actress said to haunt Aldwych station from the theatre that was previously on its site. I decided to bring her to life at the station, a nameless actress, gradually fading into grey and features disappearing into a blur.

Fade to Grey

Other nightmares followed over the years

Top to bottom: The black rabbit of Inle, Cthulhu and a Slake Moth

The Black Rabbit of Inle has haunted many of my generation. It just takes the first few bars of Bright Eyes and a black shadow sweeping before the eyes to reduce grown men to tears.

Next followed Cthulhu. Marked with the label “this is not a toy, this is pure evil”, the woolliness did nothing at all to lessen his evil hold.

Finally we have the Slake Moth. For those who do not know slake moths, they are a creation of China Mieville’s in Perdido Street Station. They suck out your dreams and leave you hollow. I think that may be the scariest thing of all.

For the Sunday Board Game Day, we’ve got several different games that we’ll be trying out:

* At 1 p.m., we’ll be having a gameplay demonstration of HeroClix. Before going on hiatus a year ago after its developer closed its doors, HeroClix was a wildly popular collectible miniatures game based on Marvel and DC Comics, It’s now being revived by another company. The newest set – Hammer of Thor – takes many of the popular heroes and villains from the pages of Thor and puts them in miniature form. We’ve got the new HeroClix Battle Packs in stock now – at the special price of just 5.99! – and we’ll have a case of Hammer of Thor coming in next week.

* We’ll also have demo copies of Arkham Horror and Smallworld in the store, both of which are 20 percent off this week, as they’re good for large numbers of players and playable for younger gamers. Arkham Horror takes place in H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythology, and is a very involved, longer game (we might be playing ’til 9 or 10!). Smallworld, by comparison, is a lighter-hearted fantasy game where fairy tale creatures attempt to get dominance over a mythical continent.

Remember, the 20 percent sale on many of our most popular board games only goes through tomorrow, so come and give them a try!

Czymś trzeba przyciągać ludzi do kin.

(Geiger na pewno projektował go z tą myślą w głowie). „Pluszowy Facehugger! On ma przytulanie w nazwie! To było tak oczywiste!”

Niemiecka strona S.P.A.C.E. oferowała pluszowe wersje Facehuggerów (z jajem bądź bez), oraz Chestbusterów. Ósmy pasażer Nostromo we wczesnych stadiach rozwoju.

Na stronie Think Geek znajdujemy Dismember-me Zombie, czyli pluszaczka, któremu można odłączać kończyny i głowę. Jest też możliwość rozłączenia go przez środek, tam odnajdujemy pluszowe flaki. W komplecie też pluszowy mózg. Pysznie, cena 13$. W temacie zombi i rozczłonkowania, nie można pomijać Asha z serii Martwe Zło. Odczepiana piła łańcuchowa, to to o czym marzą dziewczyny, 6 funtów.

Proponuję scenki z pożeraniem wyznawców (Kulfona i Moniki?). Zresztą Toy Vault wyprodukował też zwykłego pluszaka Cthulhu za 10$. Dłuższe macki u twarzy ma. Zielony bobasek. Można go jednak jeszcze bardziej osłodzić: ElvisCthulhu, Cthulhu-Super bohater i Cthulhu Agent Specjalny.

On by nigdy do tego zamieszania nie dopuścił.

I’d say at least three times a week I browse through nearly everything offered instantly from

I’d say at least three times a week I browse through nearly everything offered instantly from Netflix. Typically there’s a heavy glass of red wine sitting next to me on my floor – that needs to be vacuumed with something of industrial strength – that I’ll get to once I put my X-Box controller down. My intention is to see what is new on “instant watch” and then start buffering up a movie that hopefully doesn’t suck. A good lot of the time I browse for too long then flash through my queue and can’t decide on any one thing. Why? Too many options. I’ll even work together with my roommate Jordan to widdle down the choices, but usually I give up and head to my room for a comic or two before bed.

Sometimes too much is just too much.

I was born in ‘84 and I’ve seen the Super Nintendo (de)evolve into the Dreamcast then grow wings and become the 360. Without having to read and recite a book about science, I’m saying that I’ve witnessed technology grow exponentially. Today I have the option to watch hundreds of movies with the flick of joystick and a little pressure applied to a brightly colored button. Oh, Band McMusic just re-released their live EP from the secret show they played in Hungary – circa ‘98 – during that accidental aerial bombardment from NATO Y-Wing. ”Type type type” then “click click click” and I have that album sitting on my desktop. It’s obvious that we’re spoiled when it comes to the entertainment that’s a hyperlink away and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

X-Box Live just added Last FM as an application for it’s fancy Gold Members – who pay 40 some dollars a year – and are given many more reasons to never bask in natural light. Not that this invention is anything new to the interwebs, but I can pick an artist, make a station via that artist, and listen to music within the same vein of said artist. I know, this sounds like the radio if you were able to put it under the microscope and manipulate what you wanted from it. It is, but sometimes it’s just too much.

When I was a kid I had the radio, a small book of CDs, and the local Video Barn for entertainment. I was content too. As the years have passed and I now put onions on nearly every sandwich I make, it’s obvious my likes and dislikes have expanded. My Mom would slice onions in our kitchen back home and just the scent was enough to keep me away from our downstairs for hours. What used to sate or deter me as a child isn’t the case anymore. Now I need three new movies in the mail twice a week to keep me from clawing at the walls. There has to be a refresher from some new band I’ve never heard – or given any time to – at least a couple times a month, otherwise I start biting my nails down to the cuticle. I’m American, I drink beer out of the can, and I need to be fucking entertained 24 hours out of the God damn day. Yeah, it’s true.

I think I kinda lost my train of thought at some point in this rant, so I’ll get to some kind of point.

We used to worship idols made of stone and wood then men who said they were actual gods filled in that spot. After that we started to hear these stories from wise elders about these powerful beings that have always been and will always be, so it was the smart choice to praise them. Now we have the internet. The internet knows all, tells all, and does all. What else do we need? If this laptop I’m typing on had a vagina built into it, could pour alcohol out one of it’s many ports, and ejected the makings for a sandwich from the CD drive… yup, wouldn’t leave the house.

I could go on with this, but I’d probably end up running my words and thoughts into solid wall of nonsense, which would most likely drive me to making dick and fart jokes. Let me save you from that and tell you about some music you should be listening to.

1. Bang Maiden, they’re from San Francisco (make some unjustified generalizations from that fact alone because that’s what I’d do). On Halloween last month they played their first show at The Parkside in the Misson and they definitely fit the bill if you wanna drink, dance, and bang your head. They just uploaded a three song demo EP for download and I’m a fan. Hardcore - and whatever sub-genre within the same realm you babble about – is one of those sounds that’s in a bit of a slump as of late. Don’t get me wrong, there are many greats acts currently putting out original and good tunes, but the majority is nothing more than the same old riffs that started in the ’80s, got reworked in the ’90s, and has continued the same cycle into the 2000’s. What do these guys have that sets them apart from the fodder? They don’t have drums, they got beats. Patrick is the programming wizard in the three-piece that mixes the backbone of sound , which gives the group an artificial rhythm that is danceable… like boner-jams danceable. It’s not too often you can listen to something that cuts a rug all Samurai Shodown 2 (I suck at that game), yet urges your veins to replace some of that red with drunk and maybe punch some random, all in good fun of course. It’s dirty and fun, so give it a listen, go get tested afterwards, and pay me the ten bucks you owe.

2. Now these guys just got dredged out of the dungeon – I call it my iPod – and put a real dumb smile on my face. Since the mammoth performance I witnessed a while back at the West Seattle Legion Hall, Giant became Brave Young, but the sound hasn’t changed a bit. I’ve been allowing my music to grow a little more grand these days (drugs are bad), so the music I’m seeking needs to consume me and wall me up inside of it. Brave Young is an undertaking that weighs on your ear drums with its heavy guitars and bass. The sound becomes one looming entity that is lumbering with each bang of the drums and it’s one voice roars just far enough from the instruments before it melds back into the mass of noise. This is one of those bands that I may never see live again, but from that one show – whatever summer it was ago – I feel lucky.

3. Oh yeah, I’m doing it. Oingo Boingo has been the musical “first ice cold beer of the day” for me lately. It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it can get a little spooky, and it’s one of those aspects of the ’80s that I don’t hate. I’m not saying the 80’s were horrible, I mean come on, Earth Girls Are Easy? You don’t have to say anything, just try not to get lost in Jeff Goldblum’s eyes, even though he does have mind powers. There really isn’t any reason for me to explain any further. Fire this shit up and let Danny Elfman do the rest. Watch this too:

First, there was Goldman Sachs: The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire s

First, there was Goldman Sachs:

The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.

According to Matt Taibbi, it’s also a Great American Bubble Machine, but when you’ve won as many awards as Taibbi, the editors don’t insist you stick to one measly metaphor.

But, as Gawker discovered, it’s not really specifically Goldman Sachs that’s the vampire squid: according to the former government of Germany it’s the Jews who are a stabby, stabby, oil-crazed octopus. Behold

the Jewcephalopod:

Very few people actually know that “Jewcephalopod” is the root word for “Jewcy.” It’s true. It’s a FACT.

But this globe-straddling, stabby, oil-crazed, vampire cephalopod is also Standard Oil:

as well as Big Transit, Big Politics, The System, and (again) Standard Oil.

From this, I believe we can only conclude that, in fact, the Rockefellers are Jewish.

This book is a real treat for both seasoned Lovecraft fans and newcomers alike. It sports gorgeous artwork by Renzo Podesta.

And it’s totally kid-friendly so it’s a great introduction for the young Lovecraftians.

So they don’t know I’m here…

Heh, sounds like the beginning of a contemporary Lovecraft story, but to-

Gah!! Admirable enthusiasm, Mr. Cthulhu, but it’s still not your time. The stars are all unaligned and messy and the end of days is a long way off, so back to bed with you. Go on, off you go…

As I’ve said before, they’re like over-zealous puppies, those Great Old Ones. Anyway, I do actually have a semi-finished modern-day Lovecraft-style story hanging about somewhere. However, as you’ll have noticed from my not crowing from the rooftops and dancing merrily in text form, every single one of my writing deadlines has slunk ashamedly past me and are now long gone; on their way, I hope, to fresher pastures than these. The state of my WIPs is pitifully mirrored by the state of our house’s single plant, which is now nothing but three dried claws sticking out of a pot.

‘This is a hardy plant’, the description sticker boldly claimed…

I haven’t really blogged in a while, and here I am with two posts in a single night. In this post, I’ll be talking about something closer to my heart – roleplaying games.

Recently. I’ve had the great opportunity to get back into roleplaying games, thanks to Stella. When Andy (and Keane before him) left, the group which I spent countless Friday and Saturday nights gaming with disbanded. Well, technically there weren’t many of us left in Singapore anyway.

In any case, I digress. When Stella and I got together, one of the first things that we spoke about was gaming, in particular miniatures and pen and paper roleplaying games. Slightly over a year back, she suggested that I try to reform a gaming group, and that she’ll love to play in my games if I ran any. So it started – first with a Cthulhu Dark Ages campaign with her and Andy, and then Jon joined in. After that was a Cthulhu 1920s campaign with Shang, Jon and her, and another Dark Ages campaign that followed soon after where Mindy joined us for a game before she left for Canada. All in all, we had a relatively good time, although I felt that the dynamics of the group did not exactly suit a horror campaign that relied heavily on the players actually putting their real world knowledge aside and being willing to be scared. I therefore made a switch to Dungeons and Dragons 4e. Don’t get me wrong – Call of Cthulhu has been my main game, and it will always be. I gladly run that anytime for anyone who’s willing to be scared for an evening. We’re now in the height of our geekdom, maybe more than ever, and I’m really thankful that Stella has been supportive of this hobby all this while.

Now, like many gamers that grew up in the 90s/00s period, I’ve had the honor of playing, and running Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. While the system was arguably complicated and sometimes counterintuitive (the horrible THAC0 system), it was a great experience. I remember many Saturdays with my younger brother and cousins, seated on the floor and having games. Come 3rd ed, I was so excited – I went out and bought the PHB, read it, and put it on my shelf. A year later, I read it again, and put it away again. By this time, I was playing Vampire the Masquerade in a regular campaign and many other game lines concurrrently. It was nearly the peak of geekdom. But somehow I never got to start 3rd ed. It seemed too complicated for me. I could understand the rules, but to ask me to explain it to a new gamer – I can’t do it. I’ve been through the scenario many times but it just wasn’t newbie friendly, in my opinion. The book now resides in a box at the top of my cupboard where I put my other games I don’t play anymore. This was also partly compounded by the roleplaying (games that focuses more on the story than the rules) vs. rollplaying (games where you roll lots of dice to decide on how the story moves) divide, where I belonged to the former, believing that the latter was inherrent in d&d (I still do, but more on that later).

So why am I back to 4e, or even Dungeons and Dragons then?

Several reasons actually. Firstly, it has always been my dream to run a serious and regular dungeons and dragons campaign. I’ve always liked the idea of adventuring in a fantasy world, exploring seedy cities and beating back hordes of monsters with a bunch of companions. I spent many nights of my teenage years thinking how I would describe a bar fight, a fight with orcs in a dungeon to the players. But I had no one to try this game with. Now that I consider this the peak of our (stella and I) gaming career, I felt that it was time to start one.

Secondly, as much as Dungeons and Dragons is a game that inherently promotes -and sometimes, rewards – creating the most powerful monster killing machine possible within the ruleset, I have to admit that it is fun. There have been criticisms leveled at 4e about how it feels like a watered down boardgame as compared to the classic system where the game master makes a Ruling as compared to a Rule- and I do agree very much with this group of people- but IT IS FUN. You have players standing up when dice are rolled, jumping up and down screaming and laughing when good or bad dice results hit the table, and panicking when a seemingly harmless hobgoblin bathes the corridor in a gout of flame. In general I felt that the group somehow enjoyed themselves more. Also, the rules are much simpler and streamlined for a new game master (i.e. me) to start a game. As for the roleplaying elements, I’m working on it. I believe that it is really up to the game master and the players to make the best experience of the system that they can. Hopefully I’ll manage to get in some more social elements into the game. Stella and I constantly talk about it, and I’m seriously concerned about this campaign as well, but I think I’ll work it out, somehow, and I hope that the players will all have a good time, and tell good stories when we’re old. Already, some stories are emerging. Such is the great thing about roleplaying games – the stories – they never ever really die.
