I have been on the internet for about thirteen years now and quite early on I’ve realised the importance to ‘managing’ my online identity and keeping it in sync and recognisable. Googling ‘carocat’ in most cases leads to an online profile of me somewhere and I tend to use the same avatar in most places including as a favicon on most of my online blogs.

There are some exceptions, of course. My Twitter avatar has been a changing picture of myself since Summer last year and I use changing avatars on some of the forums I’m on.

I try to keep my Xbox Live avatar consistent, too, but didn’t realise quite how consistent until the other day. Whilst looking at my 360Voice profile I discovered a link to 360vui [360 voice user info] which provides a ton of stats. And I do love stats!

This is a list of all the gamerpictures I’ve used to date:

I bought my 360 sometime in March 2006 and this was the first gamerpicture I used. It’s one of the default ones available. Used for ~100 days.

I remember dismissing the idea of ever paying for trivial things, such as gamerpictures or themes [I've purchased four themes so far, all to show support to BioWare/Bethesda/NinjaBee/Ctrl+Alt+Del], however, I still had MS points left over after buying the Lego Star Wars characters set for ‘Lego Star Wars’ and how could I resist Yoda!? Used for 276 days.

This was an unlockable in NinjaBee’s brilliant ‘Band of Bugs’ and how can I not use a ‘NinjaBee’ as an avatar. Of course I also changed my motto to ‘is the ninja cat’ which it still is today. Used for 142 days.

There was a time I religiously read the Ctrl+Alt+Del webcomic until, well, I guess I just moved on. I do still like Lilah as a character though and, just like the NinjaBee avatar, it was a quite rare one on Xbox Live which appealed to me. After all, who doesn’t like to stand out of the crowd?! This avatar was also active in the last year when I didn’t have a 360, but I already used it before I sold my 360 for ~150 days. Used for 565 days.

Of course once I got another 360 I fell in love with the avatar options available, even though they are quite limited, especially relating to hairstyles and none of them looks remotely like me which is why I chose to take a close up picture of my avatar. So far used for 44 days.

And to show what I don’t really look like, this is my avatar. I was quite content with the similarity based on the limitations until a friend asked me the other day who that was meant to be.. Guess not then!

I stumbled upon an article on NPR ranking America’s Meanest Cities this morning:

Though rather simplified, it got me thinking about homelessness here in America. The issue isn’t so much about feeling  pity for the occasional bum who strolls by and asks for change- there is a larger picture to uncover here. How does one of the worlds most advanced societies addresses its most hapless faction? The country is witnessing a gradual criminalization of homelessness in various cities, even to the extent that it becomes an offense to give food to the destitute in public spaces.

Does the future contain  “Please, do not feed the homeless” plaques posted alongside the “Please, do not feed the birds” signs?

Being exposed to the third world I may be  immune to the situation, but something about the average American psyche seems unusually uncomfortable with the visual presence of the homeless figure. People don’t usually change their route at the sight of a homeless figure in most third world and even European countries where homelessness is a growing problem. Believe it or not you can even see children playing with their parents while bums ‘hang out’ close by! Here though, the mantra seems to be ‘Out of sight out of mind’- cities struggle to “clean up” their streets  (cosmetically) and send the hoodlums packing (oftentimes without relocation plans) so that the happy holidayer won’t be plagued by ugly truths. It is what I call the Ctrl + Alt + Del mentality at work: a few key strokes and voila! a false clean beginning!

I was walking around abandoned parts of downtown Dallas last night where not a soul was to be seen except those in search for a place to rest for the night. A fruitless search, given that even a car garage (unused at night) was locked and barricaded and the urban streetscape is intentionally lined with furniture designed to discourage long repose.

This is interesting territory-  design (the realm of beauty, elegance, problem solving) collides with the underbelly of society and intervenes to cosmetically correct its ‘defects.’ But design can go deeper than that. It’s tempting here to ask if we were a little more comfortable with the presence of the homeless in our streetscape whether good design could be used to integrate rather than alieniating them altogether.

By no means is this a novel idea- just one that could use more exploration. Some interesting works have come out of designers such as Sean Godsell and Agustin Otegui with their unique takes on  transmogrifying ordinary benches into homeless shelters etc. but I assure you there is much room to play.

To follow up my previous post I’ve just come across these Ctrl-Alt-Del cushions for when times get really bad and mashing your keyboard just isn’t enough.

Friday I’ll be continuing my look at some of the graphic novels that I own. That is something that I’d like to do more of this summer. However, today I’ll be sharing some statistics about this blog that I think are very interesting. This isn’t me bragging about how many views that I’ve gotten because it’s not very high. This blog averages about 25 views a day.

I’m not really surprised by the Ctrl-Alt-Del views only because I happened to post that one during the whole miscarriage controversy that rocked brought the comic a brief week or two of fame. The Batman one also isn’t very surprising if only because of the next set of statistics.

The last one is also from around the time period from the Zero Punctuation video game review videos. Yahtzee never actually says that he’s talking about Ctrl-Alt-Del but it’s pretty obvious.

Now, say that some representatives of organised religion got upset and wanted them to stop. What would happen next? Ctrl+Alt+Del has been there, done that.

In the webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ethan has started a gamers religion, based around the practice of playing video games. When the local heads of organised religion get word of this, they rock up and demand that he stop this nonsense immediately.

Man. I never want those guys debating on my side. If you can’t answer that challenge, then you have no right trying to evangelise, convert or engage with anybody, let alone another faith system.

What is a webcomic? It’s an online comic updated either daily or several times a week by skilled and often witty artists who carry on a storyline.

Some people may be saying, “Bah, I don’t have time to read a webcomic.”

That’s a pretty lame excuse, since I know you will spend questionable amounts of time stalking people, maybe even me, on Facebook. I think you can spare a few seconds a day to catch up on some great stories.

There are TONS of webcomics out there, in fact, The Webcomic List website has compiled a list of over 13,600. Woah. That’s a lot to keep up with.

Questionable Content gets so many hits in a day, that when creater J.Jaques allowed guest artist Joel Watson to draw a guest strip (today, 6/17/09), all the traffic generated to Joel’s webcomic HijiNKS Ensue caused his server to crash (as noted via his Twitter). Haha. Pretty funny. Although good news traffic-wise for Joel, once he gets it under control.  I love what I saw from the several examples he gave from his webcomic,  HijINKS. References to Whedon’s Dollhouse and Buffy. Yes! Love.

De ce e porcina?? E de la porc, sau nu e de la porc? Ecuador, Ucraina, parca si alte tari, au interzis importul de carne de porc, dar autoritatile internationale urla ca nu se ia gripa porcina de la carnea de porc mancata. Se ia din aer… Aha, deci sa stau cat mai departe de guitatori si mai ales sa nu-i las sa stranute spre mine.

O alta problema pe care mi-o pun: daca nu e de porc ci e doar nord-americana, daca e foarte usor de tratat in faza incipienta, daca are simptomele normale unei gripe ca toate gripele, daca tratamentul nu difera de doftoriile cu care te indopi in caz de gripa ordinara… de ce e o gripa speciala??????? Mai exact, ce face gripa nord-americana mai bau-bau decat toate celelalte epidemii de gripa din lume?

S-a gasit, se zice, primul caz de gripa porcina identificat la om in Mexic. E un baietel foarte simpatic, care povesteste cum a dat gripa porcina in el: “aveam capul fierbinte, tuseam pana ma durea gatul si stomacul, n-aveam pofta de mancare.” Lasand tusea la o parte, simptomele par ceva mai blande decat in cazul gripei la romani, unde se lasa cu dureri de muschi, zacut la pat. Ce face primul om depistat cu gripa porcina? Se simte foarte bine!

Fireste, marketingul a inceput sa clocoteasca: Obama a fost in Mexic la trei zile dupa primul caz si a dat mana cu un cunoscut arheolog care a murit a doua zi, se pare, de gripa porcina. Oare il baga pe Obama in carantina?

In Vietnam si Egipt, oamenii nu se tem de gripa porcina, ca se lupta in momentul asta cu gripa aviara. Toti cei infestati cu aviara anul asta au murit.

Pana vine in Romania sa stam la locul nostru, sa tusim cat mai departe unii de altii si sa asteptam providentialul Tamiflu. Vreo 12 milioane de doze unice asteapta, cuminti, sa fie cerute de guverne si oameni prevazatori din toata lumea. Ce bizniz, gripa asta!

If you want to open the System Monitor in Gnome just like Windows, here’s what you have to do :



1) Disable the current Ctrl+Alt+Del combination (Logout) :

In Ubuntu Go to System ->Preferences ->Keyboard Shortcuts -> Desktop disable logout shortcut (hit backspace) if it’s associated with Ctrl+Alt+Del.

2) Enter these commands in a shell :

gconftool-2 -t str --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_command_1 "Delete"

gconftool-2 -t str --set /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_1 "gnome-system-monitor"

Note that these are Metacity global keybindings, normally you should have the 12 run commands disabled so you can use 1 to 12 numbers range in run_command_x and command_x, it’s always better to check their current status, hit Alt+F2 enter gconf-editor then open apps -> metacity -> global_keybindings.
