Whilst creating a sketch, Inventor will very helpfully automatically constrain each line, arc and point as you lay it down. However Inventor doesn’t always pick the constraint you would expect…

You can pick which constraints are inferred by right clicking whilst in sketch mode, while no command is active and picking ‘Constrain Options’ from the short cut menu.

You can ‘force’ a particular constraint by ‘scrubbing’ your cursor over the relevant geometry whilst sketching.

You can temporarily turn off inferred constraints by pressing the CTRL key as you sketch. This doesn’t effect coincident constraints, so your loops should still close…

The Internet is awesome isn’t it? Being a celebrity is equally awesome as well. But being a celebrity on the internet somehow doesn’t equal the sum of its parts. It’s like being a wonderful lover for your hand or a Michelin star chef for school dinners.

And yet you continually see these ‘internet celebrities’ throwing tantrums and screaming fits that would put Kanye West to shame. Surely the fact they aren’t being showered with millions of dollars and stalked by the paparazzi would mean they’d be a little bit more humble than that specimen.

What is it that makes them take criticism like a Vampire takes a holy water enema?

To illustrate my point, let me set a little scene for you…

A blind man takes to the street corner every day to busk for spare change. At first he just does it for the fresh air and the fun of performing in the company of his guide dog, and at first people are content to pass by on their way to more important things. But one day a young boy is walking by and he hears the music… and he is inspired. He has never heard music like that before and it touches his heart and soul in ways he has never experienced before.

He has to talk to him!

The boy goes up to the blind man and asks him how he learned to play that well. At first the man is surprised to be interrupted with such praise but he soon becomes accustomed to it, playing his music becomes a little more gratifying to him now he knows that someone is enjoying it. The boy tells his friends of the amazing music he has found and the blind man hears several voices telling him his music is great and he should totally get a record detail.

One day, the boys invite one of their friends over to hear the blind man play. The friend is mildly impressed, but asks if the man knows how to play any songs that aren’t covers of Led Zeppelin.

But before the boy can even finish his sentence, the blind man screams over him and tells him to piss off because he’s an ungrateful little fucktard and how can he dare question a genius such as he!

It’s deeply offensive and needlessly rude, but look at the blind mans perspective. He has played in anonymity for years and suddenly is told that he is brilliant by increasing numbers of people whose faces he has never seen. Completely unaware of the thousands of people who pass by every day and find him merely mediocre. They develop such a blinkered, rose-tinted view of the world where all they hear is how amazing they are that criticism becomes alien to them. This only gets worse when you’re in an environment where you can wipe someone’s opinion off of the face of the earth, effectively punching them in the face before they can get a word in edgewise.

Tim Buckely, the creator of ‘Ctrl-Alt-Delete’ is famous for instantly banning anyone who asks whether he should try another art style apart from the slack-jawed buffoonery he has shilled for the last five years.

How dare you question my Artistic skill!

As much as I would love to watch people like this tarred and feathered, you cannot blame them or their fans. It’s not their fault. I’ve seen this effect in action as it’s starting up.

A little known web comic by the name of ‘Daisy Owl’ started up about a year and a bit ago. The art is quirky and well drawn; the humour is whimsical and very well observed in a rather silly yet genuinely sweet way, and Ben Driscoll, the author, has been nothing but humble and kind towards everyone around him. I think it’s very good, but I’ve never felt the desire to go on to his forum thread where he discusses his work and wax lyrical about his talent. But there are hundreds who do, and they’re not idiots, they just love his work enough to want to post on the forum. All Driscoll see’s right now is a palimpsest of adoration, and when his work was criticised on another site, his fans tore into the poor fellow, claiming he hadn’t got the jokes or had no taste or was just plain stupid…

Can we please not?

There’s only so long you can go before you start to believe that that’s all there is. That the whole world thinks like your fans and anyone else is wrong.

As much as it hurts, a writer thrives on constructive criticism. If someone likes your work, that’s it. If someone doesn’t really like it, they can tell you how to improve it. But why listen to them when you can just ban their account and listen to your fans instead.

If any of the people I mentioned happen to see this… Spam my comments; complain about me on your forums all you want. It won’t make me any less right, quite the opposite in fact. Just try to remember that there is a whole world out there, and cherry picking the bits you like from the others may be more comfortable, but it won’t make you a better person.

If you’re a fan of anyone like this, be aware that to them, you’re just another voice in the dark, a faceless entity of no use to them but for stroking their throbbing, tumescent ego, and the more you tell them they are the greatest invention since porn the more likely they’ll start to believe it.

I have heard many a busy people say that they do not have “time” for shortcuts – I am assuming they mean they don’t have time to “learn” shortcuts – but in fact like my Nana always said “A stitch in time saves nine”.  OK she never said that but it is true.  Take some time now to learn a few shortcuts and you will earn that time back many times over.  I understand how they feel because when I started looking for shortcuts myself, a Google.com search brings up hundreds of pages each with their own fav list of shortcuts. Don’t be lazy dog!  Just think, if you learned just one shortcut day, in a year you could be an expert! (then I will hire you to write for this blog – NICE!)

Lets take a look at something simple and what you apparently like wasting time at – surfing the Net.  Today, as you may be able to ascertain from the title, is Firefox Day – specifically Browser Management.  Even if you are not using Firefox give these a try on your current browser and see that happens. Or why not give Firefox a try?

• To Bookmark a Page (of blog like this one!) Ctrl + D for PC and Cmd + D for Mac
• To help Manage Bookmarks with a handy dandy sidebar  Ctrl + B or Ctrl +I for PC and Cmd +B for Mac
• This one is useful if you need to look back at where you’ve been surfing Browsing History Ctrl + H for PC and Cmd + Shift + H for Mac
• If you are like me, you forget what you have downloaded,  give this one a try Download History Ctrl + J for PC and Cmd + J for Mac
• Now this one can come in handy if you are a spy and the enemy is coming up the stairs and you need to delete all you secrete web browsing data quickly  Clear Private Data Ctrl + Shift + Delete for PC NOTE: If you are not a spy or don’t want data cleared – DON”T DO THIS!!!  Take a read on what it all does before you play with this one.  And for you Mac users out there – there is no short cut.  Guess that spy school money was well wasted.  But if you want to try this take a read first and then Click Tools – Clear Recent History…

So that should give some fancy finger work to help speed up saving and managing your bookmarks – so have at ‘er.

Here are some nice shortcuts that are for ASP.Net MVC Application that will help you develop your web applications at a faster pace.

First to add a view, simply hold down (Ctrl M, Ctrl V)

and Adding a Controller to your new MVC App is easy as well just by holding the following down (Ctrl M, Ctrl C)

The computer mouse is a great invention, but sometimes it’s nice to do things without having to take your fingers off of the keyboard. In Windows, the Control key can allow for some very useful functions without using the mouse.

I’m often surprised when people whom I think are pretty savvy computer users don’t know or use the CTRL shortcuts in Windows. They’re not for everyone and if you absolutely can’t be bothered to remember them or have no use for them, then fine. But it’s really not all that hard.

CTRL+A. It’s the same thing as “Select All” under the edit menu. Simply put, it selects all of the objects or text in an active window. It’s easy to remember think “A” for “All”. Much faster than using the mouse to click and drag over large amounts of text or files/folders and faster than using the Edit menu. Once your items are selected you can delete/cut/copy.

CTRL+C. Remember “C” for copy. It copies the selected item(s) so that you can paste them to another location. Good for quickly copying URLs from your browsers bar into an email or a blog. The item that you’ve copied stays in it’s original location and creates a copy of itself to wherever it’s pasted.

CTRL+X Cut. Cut is like copy, except it “moves” the file. The original is gone after you paste it to it’s new location. If you don’t paste the object to somewhere else, then it really doesn’t do anything. You can remember that “X” looks like scissors for “cut”.

CTRL+V is paste. This combination will paste whatever is in the clipboard to the new location. This will depend on what type of application your using. If you just copied an MP3 file and you hit CTRL+V in an empty text file, nothings going to happen. Usually if you’re pasting something though you know what you’ve just copied or cut. You can paste text, or URLs, or pictures, or files and folders in Windows Explorer. Whatever. I don’t really have a helpful tip for remembering “V” is paste, other than it’s right next to the copy(C) and cut(X) on the keyboard. Cutting, copying, and pasting are basic functions that can just as easily be done with the mouse or the edit menu, but using the keyboard makes moving stuff around a lot faster.

CTRL+F is find. Remember “F” for find. This is probably my favorite one. It makes it easy to find keywords in a document or web page. CTRL+F and type in the word or words you’re looking for and the words are highlighted for you. You can make the search case sensitive. This works in web browsers and text editors. I really wish that CTRL+F would work in all Windows. Speeds up the process of finding what you’re looking for. Cuts down on unnecessary reading.

CTRL+Z is for undo. Very helpful when you have something selected and you hit the delete key by accident or you move something to the wrong place. CTRL+Z and it’s undone. This combo works in Windows and a lot of other applications like Photoshop, Office, web browsers, and many others. Before you freak out that you did the wrong thing, CTRL+Z.

CTRL+Y is redo. You undo something and realize you actually did mean to delete that file or you do like that photo in black and white after all. CTRL+Y. Redo.

Incidentally all of these basic CTRL combination’s are listed on the edit menu if you forget them. Just click edit and there they are .

There are tons more CTRL key combos. CTRL+ALT+Delete is probably one of the most famous. CTRL+Shift+ESC to bring up the Task Manager in Windows. If your a computer guru you probably know all of these and plenty more. The point is that there are usually several different ways to do something in Windows. Use whichever one is easiest for you, but remember that there are always other options when you need to evolve .

CTRL The Power Jumper

Today’s post is aimed at those of you who will understand my pet peeves on PCs. But then, if you’re surfing blogs I’m going to assume that’s you anyway. We’ll go for 5 points again today. It’s a nice round number…

1. When searching a document/web page/whatever. You press ctrl F and the search box comes up. You type “snotty walruses ate my socks” into the box. Only this isn’t what happened. Because you are confident in your typing, you have looked at the keyboard, your coffee mug and out of the window during this time, but never at the screen. And you missed the ctrl key. So now you have an official document that reads “the prosecuting council thenfsnotty walruses ate my socks took the defendant to task”. How irritating is that one?

2. Copy/Paste/Cut/Bookmarks. Why, oh why, oh why would any designer put the buttons for cut, copy, paste and bookmark next to each other. You’re guarenteed to hit the wrong one at least 10% of the time (unless you actually look at what you’re typing all the time, and who does that?) This, of course, results in this situation: You have important things to cut from one document and paste over the other. You cut “Cuddly Badger 100″ from document 2 and highlight “Hairy Octopus 37″ in doc 1. But because you’re not paying attention, instead of Ctrl V, you hit Ctrl C. You have now copied “Hairy Octopus 37″ into the buffer, and poor old “Cuddly Badger 100″ has vanished from both documents. And in the kerfuffle (love that word) to sort it all out, you accidentally hit Ctrl B instead of Ctrl C and now you have the bloody internet bookmarks window open and youve pasted “Nobbly socks 11″ as a new folder. Gaaarrgh!

3. You must restart your computer to complete this action. And you never damn well want to. Prime example: I have a database that I keep opening and closing trying to sort a problem. And for some reason I have ended up with a copy of Office 2003 and a copy of Office 2007 running concurrently on my PC. This means that every time I open the .adp file it opens in the different one and has to configure everything. So in the end, I got angry with it and uninstalled 2007 (which is about as much use as a Marzipan Rat to a Cambodian Dictator anyway). And now it wants me to restart the PC. But I can’t as I’ve got a hundred delicate things half-done. But now also I can’t open the database in 2003 because 2007 hasn’t finished uninstalling until I restart the bloody machine. Which I can’t! Argh!

4. You’re closing down a window of some sort. Let’s say it’s Internet Explorer, since that is the thing that siezes up and does not respond most often. Oh, and that annoys me too. ‘Internet Explorer – Not Responding’. Well… duh! We can tell that. We don’t need miscroscrot to build in a message to tell us it’s not responding. We can see that it’s not buggering responding! What we need to know is why it’s not responding! If you run diagnostics on something, you don’t expect it to respond with ‘It’s broken’. You expect to find out why. Anyway. Yes, so you close the window by clicking on the cross in the top right. Nothing happens, so you hit it 15 times in frustration. Then it closes somewhere in the middle of the barrage of clicking and you discover you’ve also closed 3 unsaved projects you were working on, your search that’s taken 20 minutes to run and has just completed and your ever-so important catalogue of lesbian reindeer soft porn. Hmm. That got stranger than I intended towards the end. Ah well.

5. Problem solving using IT forums on the net. If you’ve not done this, you must try it. It’s a good way to test your blood pressure. Pick a problem. “Error 3301: Cannot locate muskrat carcass” or some such. Search the net for the error. You find 300 results of people who are also asking how the hell to solve this error. If, by blind luck, you manage to hit a result that someone has replied to, you will find that the reply either echoes the question, has nothing to do with the question, or suggests and answer that the original questioner has already tried and talked about in the question. So you check out the other results. Four out of five are exactly the same pointless conversation from exactly the same people but on four different sites.

So. 5 of my pet peeves on the computer. Any better ones?
