In order to get ready for Precious, I chose another Lee Daniels film, that I’m hoping will make Precious a better trip than what I expect.

A nasty crime lord (Stephen Dorff) hires Rose (Helen Mirren) and her stepson Mikey (Cuba Gooding Jr.) — assassin partners and longtime lovers — to off his spouse, Vickie (Vanessa Ferlito). But Rose, ill with cancer and on her last job, spares her mark when she learns Vickie’s with child. The unexpected twist forces Mikey, Rose and their charges to flee to life in suburbia, until the past catches up with them.

Now looking at this film from a person who has seen it all in films, I have got to say this movie is pretty messed up. When you have film with Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding Jr. doing it, you know you have a pretty messed up film.

So anyway, all the critics I have read, all HATED this film. For me I’m going to say yeah its odd and kind of weird but really it does a good job with its material. It takes this unusual story and makes it a stylized, enjoyable thriller.I’m not going to lie there are scenes that get a little too out of hand, but after that I still was on the edge of my seat wondering what was to happen next.

I am not a prude and I can see how the sex scenes bring a grittiness that was needed to show the harshness of real life but nothing else about this movie reflects real life. The director almost comically twists the relationships to get a jolt out of the viewer.

Helen Mirren doesn’t quite act to the standard she could have. She looks like at times she just lost a bet, and was given a script to work with and just decided to mildly act it out. Cuba Gooding Jr. does the best job in this film as basically taking the last act of the film and making it his show with a powerful performance. Stephen Dorff, plays the type of 2nd grade villain that doesn’t get enough screen time to show how vicious he really can be, I think this was a problem but he could have done better as well.

The one thing I’ll also say about this film is that it shows these weird couples, but you know what that’s reality. I mean there is a couple of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mo’Nique, this was kind of odd, but it still showed how strange couples can actually be.

Consensus: The over-the-top sex scenes and at points very random, Shadowboxer is a stylized and entertaining little thriller, that doesn’t get the best boot from its cast, but in the end is actually OK.

Boyz N The Hood was the debut film by writer/director John Singleton.  The semi-autobiographical tale revolves around three young black men, Tre, Ricky, and Doughboy, and their daily lives growing up in South Central Los Angeles.

Relevance:  While the phrase ‘black film’ can take on many different meanings (as this countdown hopefully illustrates), Boyz N The Hood is the type of film that is universally agreed to represent the ultimate prototype.  Black director, black writer, black cast, black soundtrack, black setting, black story.  Spike had already proven there was a modern audience for black film; in mimicking the rise of West Coast hip hop, John opened America’s eyes to a very real ’street’ sensibility that was getting louder and prouder.

Legacy:     So many careers and trends can be traced to this film.  John Singleton obviously, but also Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, and Cuba Gooding Jr. started their rise with this film.  The good and bad ‘hood’ films (Menace II Society, and countless others) wouldn’t have gotten made without Boyz.  While Spike was the clear pioneer, John’s success told both Hollywood and future filmmakers that there was room for more than one black storyteller at a time.  That might be the greatest legacy.

Craft:  Rewatching it years later, there are points where the film is undeniably ‘preachy’.  (And the Wayans absolutely slaughtered this point to death in their parody, Don’t Be a Menace).  That aside, the film’s structure is fairly classical.  Three brothers, one undeniably good (Tre), one undeniably bad (Doughboy), and one good who has some ties to the bad (Ricky).  The presence of the father figure (Furious) is somewhat on the nose, but no one can take away from the great performance of Laurence Fishburne.

Crossover:  Without a doubt.  Boyz N The Hood was on its own regard a crossover phenomenon.  John Singleton became the first African-American, and the youngest person of any color to be nominated for Best Director.  As referenced in the Legacy section, Ice Cube has gone from Doughboy to the star of Are We There Yet?  Anyone who saw that coming is a bold faced liar.

Apollo:  Ricky’s slow motion demise is still incredibly powerful.  If I may, I’d like to use this space for something more personal.  I was still a kid when this film came out.  Spike’s films had already planted the seed in my head, and I heard about all this new black kid out of USC doing it, so of course I wanted to see the film.  Now I might be slightly off with this number, but the number of times I personally remember my father going out to the movie theater has to be around…5?  He has movies he likes now, but they’re not his thing, they’re my thing.  So there we were one Saturday afternoon (in Oak Park Mall for you Kansas City people) watching Boyz.  My Pops taking me to something I was interested in wasn’t a big deal to me; it’s what I’ve always known.  So when Furious made his speech to Tre about listening to him (and watching what happens to Ricky and Doughboy who didn’t have that male influence), it was just part of the movie to me. 

Anyway, now that I’m on the other side of the table, I have so much appreciation for what I had.  Obviously having a man in the house doesn’t mean automatically mean a boy grows up into a good brotha, not having a man doesn’t mean a boy won’t turn out well.  But it’s a conversation I’ve had over and over again with some of my closest friends: having a good man involved in the life of a boy can go a long, long way in creating a good man.  (I’m deliberately avoiding the father-daughter influence; go listen to some old John Mayer for that.)  As a wrap I’ll say for its various flaws, Boyz N The Hood is one of the better, three-dimensional black films ever made.

In 1999, a little movie was made called Chill Factor.  Even as a silly naive 20 year old, I remember thinking it was the dumbest premise of a movie I’d ever heard, so I thought I’d make you all remember it too.

Here’s Wikipedia’s dead-eyed synopsis of the plot:

Two mismatched men, Arlo (Cuba Gooding Jr,) an Ice Cream truck driver, and Tim (Skeet Ulrich), a short order cook, are forced to team up, and get on each others nerves, when through a series of circumstances they find themselves in possession of a top-secret bio-warfare weapon. The weapon detonates with enormous force when heated to only 50 degrees.

I feel like they literally just put a handful of words into a bag and pulled them out, Mad Libs style.

What happens when a   ___zoo keeper___    and a     ___customer service representative___     happen upon a     ___fiery dinosaur___ that will attack when it is too full of     ____sunshine___?

Christian Slater stars in this thriller as successful self-help author Wes Wilson, whose happiness is shattered when his fiancee, Samantha (Sarah Ann Schultz), is killed in a seemingly random attack. Wes’s world is turned further upside down after he uncovers Samantha’s secret double life, which involved stealing a cache of diamonds from ruthless jewel smuggler Isaac (Cuba Gooding Jr.) — who now wants his loot back, and is willing to do anything to get it.

I blame “Snow Dogs.” I mean, how else can you explain the precipitous descent of an Oscar-winning actor from the A-list to direct-to-DVD junk that even Steven Seagal would pass on?

At one point, Cuba Gooding Jr. was one of the hottest actors working in Hollywood. Now, save for a blip here and there, he has fallen off the map completely, and I just don’t know why, except that starring in that ridiculous Disney film permanently crippled his career.

But heck, even Paul Walker was in “Eight Below” and he still gets work. It hasn’t been the case for Gooding – proof that when it’s all said and done, an Oscar doesn’t pay the bills.

As a connoisseur of off-the-radar movies, I’ve been astonished at how much shit Gooding’s been in over the last year. It seems as if every week he’s on the cover of some generic action thriller usually reserved for Wesley Snipes.

Since his turn as Nicky Barnes in “American Gangster” (which was supposed to be his “comeback” role), Gooding has appeared in EIGHT straight-to-DVD films, including the 13th (!) installation of “The Land Before Time” series to his upcoming release, “Hardwired,” co-starring another DVD legend, Val Kilmer.

And look, I understand that it’s hard to get movies out, but these aren’t the kind of films that get lost in the shuffle. No, they’re all cheap cash grabs, capitalizing on foreign locations and a name to put on the box to sell some copies at your local Blockbuster (and more importantly, to markets across the globe).

Most of the movies follow the same basic formula: Gooding plays some sort of lone wolf/military personnel/family man who must avenge some injustice, usually against the other semi-big name in the film. Don’t believe me? Let’s go to the videotape.

Not convinced yet? What about “The Devil’s Tomb,” which throws in some spooky sci-fi and Ron Perlman:

So the real question here is why has Gooding been resigned to this fate? As far as I know, he hasn’t done anything wrong aside from starring in the aforementioned talking dog flick (and perhaps filling in for Eddie Murphy in the “Daddy Day Care” sequel.

I’ve never heard any stories about him being a jerk on set or not filing his taxes. He never punched any of his co-stars.

The only thing I can really think of is that he’s black in Hollywood. And right now, the only black actors over 40 getting any work are Denzel and Don Cheadle. So you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do, but that doesn’t mean it’s sad to see a talented guy like Gooding slumming along in offal like this.

I don’t know – maybe he’s happy living out his action fantasies, although I find that hard to believe.

I understand that Gooding is working on a film about the Tuskeegee Airmen, and I hope beyond hope that it gets a shot at theatres (I would imagine with George Lucas behind the project, this will happen). The poor guy deserves it.
