Newfound Fitness Motivation

Last year, around this time, Oren and I started training for a 5K run. Oren had never run before and I had never raced before, so that was a great undertaking for both of us. After managing the 5K run (we used the Couch to 5K program, which has a free app, and I cannot recommend it highly enough) I had planned to just continue training with the 10K trainer version of the same program that essentially picks up where the 5K leaves off. But I never signed up for a 10K to give me a goal, and I still found 5K to be a challenging distance to run. Layer on tons of a excuses and busy summer, and the dreams of running a 10K fell by the wayside for 2012. I did run several other 5Ks after the first one on Memorial Day last year. I ran the Color Run with Oren and Becki in August, right before John and Meaghan’s wedding (photographic evidence exists if you look in the blog’s archives) and I also ran the Awesome 80′s Run in San Diego in October with John, where I shattered my personal records in order to get to my Saturday morning conference on time.

I always leave races with the best of intentions, but then fall off the wagon without an appreciable goal. Well, this month, I scrambled aboard the wagon once more. My BFF Emily and I have dinner once a month (at least we try to…it doesn’t always work) and last time she mentioned an all-women’s 10K in June in Central Park. It happens to be the day before Andrés and Molly’s wedding, which means that once again, all of our friends will be in town from all over the world. This was the kick in the pants I needed — I had enough time and the right motivation, so I started training again. I backtracked in the 5K training a little and I’m making steady progress. I’ll update on my training week by week until the race.

Valentine’s Day

Oren and I don’t usually making a huge fuss about Valentine’s Day, but this year, Valentine’s Day happend right before President’s Day Weekend, for which Oren had Friday and Saturday off, so we decided to make an event of it. On Thursday we went to Las Palmas, a Cuban restaurant in West New York, New Jersey. I got to bust out a few Spanish speaking skills and we ate enough delicious caribbean food to last us a while. The crappy iPhone pictures will speak for themselves — I got shrimp mofongo and Oren go skirt steak. We accompanied our delicious meal with an order of plantains and yuca, and we finished everything off with some dulce de leche. Not a bad Valentine’s Day meal at all.

On Friday we piled into the car and headed to a bed and breakfast in Bloomfield, New York. We were en route to spend the holiday weekend at my grandparents’ house in Rochester, but we thought we’d spend a night in a B&B just for a fun, romantic stopover. We went through Ithaca on the way to the B&B and made a stop to see my aunt and uncle, Mary and Brian, and my cousin Joey. We had a nice afternoon coffee with them. It was nice to catch up and we even made an impromptu stop at a yarn store.

The B&B was beautiful and it was nice to scope out the town on the way from Bloomfield to Rochester. We stopped at a game store in Victor, New York so that Oren could do some hardcore nerding out, and picked up some fresh apple cider and cider doughnuts on the way to see the grandparents.

I don’t have pictures of our time at the B&B or at my grandparents’. A sure sign that we were having too much fun to stop and take pictures. Highlights were going to the movies to see Silver Linings Playbook (which I get the impression that my grandparents didn’t 100% enjoy) and going to a farmers market where we picked up some ground buffalo meat and aced a test on sensible snack portioning at a health awareness booth.

The “weekend” really continues into Monday, when we’ll head back to New Jersey. Vacations always make time fly by way too fast. Here’s a scene from the drive home:

My son had a four day weekend from school scheduled, so we packed up our bags and headed up to the Florida Heartland to spend some time with Grandma in Sebring. I was extremely tempted to bring my bike along and squeeze in some rides on the rolling terrain, but with a to do list longer than my arm, as well as forecasted chilly temperatures, I decided to just pack some “running gear” and settle for some thump, thump, thumping instead.

No sooner had we arrived in Sebring, I was handed the official “sonny-do list”…curiously similar to the honey-do lists my own wife prepares for me, only this one was heavier on outdoor acrobatic stunts…for example, pick all the remaining oranges from all the citrus trees in the yard. Of coarse all the low hanging fruit had already been picked clean leaving me the joy of balancing precariously up on a ladder. Also on the list were exciting chores like cleaning out the pool filter, repairing the broken sprinklers, trimming the hedges, fertilizing the yard, fixing the central vacuum, well, you get the idea. Not the most exciting things to look forward to over a 4 day break, but the company and home cooked meals more than make up for it. I’m currently writing this while being seduced by the mouthwatering aroma of a classic Cuban Arroz Con Pollo simmering in the oven…good thing I brought the the old sneaks, otherwise I’d be coming back home 5 pounds heavier.

Speaking of the sneakers, I actually was looking forward to today’s little run. Either I’m acclimating quickly, or I was welcoming the break from reprogramming the multiple-zone irrigation system. My wife begrudgingly joined me on the crisp run down the Harder Hall fairways as we followed the now audible prompts from Cyclemeter…it’s so much nicer not having to watch the screen.

The run was less annoying than the last, especially since we both consciously worked on our form, in particular, foot placement. Proper foot strike really makes a huge difference…thanks for the tips Gus and Tina. Maggie almost gave up on the last run interval, but she resisted the temptation and finished up <strike>with a smile on her face</strike> cursing me, the shoes and the road.

11/02/13* Yesterday we returned from a cheeky and rather spur of the moment trip to the small villag

11/02/13*

Yesterday we returned from a cheeky and rather spur of the moment trip to the small village of Viñales, located near to Pinar del Río, about a three hour drive outside of La Habana. Despite my concerns that we were doing this in the most disorganised way possible, it turned into an amazing trip I definitely do not regret taking.

On Saturday morning we took off bright and early at 8:00AM in a taxi that was quite posh by Cuban standards; it was a private, air-conditioned bus so we were definitely travelling in style. Miriam, one of the many Mamas De La Casa on our street, organised it for us as she seems to know everyone in La Habana and she got us an amazing deal. Not only did we pay a meagre 18 CUC (approximately $18 USD) per person for the journey, but it also included a fantastic tour of the tobacco plantation responsible for the famous Cohiba cigar. The Cuban cigar connoisseur that I am not did not quite understand how amazing this was until I was informed that Cohiba cigars are one of the most popular cigars in the smoking world averaging in at a whopping cost of 45 euros for one! After our tour, the tobacco farmer told us that only days before the head of the anti-smoking organisation in Cuba had been in there puffing away on a famous Cohiba, apparently they are too good to be bad for you, who knew?

Once the tour was over we continued our journey to Viñales, which involved passing numerous pro-Communist and Socialist billboards and endless lines of hitchhikers waving down a possible lift to their desired destinations. On our approach into Viñales we began to get very excited for our adventure off the beaten track when we realised that Viñales seemed to be quite the tourist hub. There were three massive Transtur buses in front of us! But we weren’t going to let that stop us having a good time.

We soon arrived at our Casas Particulares where we were greeted with tall glasses of delicious mango juice. Casas Particulares are Cuban homes where tourists are invited to stay and eat for between 15 and 20 CUC per day, so they’re a pretty great deal for anyone. It wasn’t long before the unanimous decision to eat was made, which meant Fernan-2 soon had a restaurant full of foreign students. There I ate what is probably the best pork of my life. Being from the nation of Proper Pork, trust me when I say that is a big deal. The lunch conversation soon became a very in-depth discussion about the differences between plantain, bananas, green bananas and figs and as the West Indian in the group I was the all knowing source of clarification. I must say I was quite impressed with my descriptions, excepting that of figs which I don’t particularly care to know anything about as I am not a fan so why worry?

After lunch it was time for a trip to the Cuevas in the mountains, which we decided to make a caballo (on horseback). It was my first time on a horse for 10 years and I am just happy that falling was not on the cards that day. However, my backside bones certainly took a whacking and that night sleeping on my back was not an option, as was the case for everyone. The ride was really enjoyable as we trotted through several tobacco plantations, where we stumbled upon a farmer who was puffing away on a cigar as he got down to business.

Exploring the caves was a completely different experience to any cave experience I have ever had before. Our tour guide spoke NO English and led us into a dark cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites with absolutely no protection and the grand total of 3 torch lights for vision in the pitch black darkness. At Harrison’s Cave in Barbados and Kent’s Caverns in England every detail of the caves is explained to you and where health and safety standards are of utmost importance. I can now confidently say both types of experiences are definitely worth it as one is great for learning and the other is an undeniable adventure.

Once in the heart of the cave we were told that we could swim in the natural pools. However, very few of us had brought a swimming costume with us so in less than 3 minutes we soon realised how close we really had become in a matter of 2 weeks as we stripped down to our underwear just so we didn’t miss out on the experience. As we headed back once more on horseback, I enjoyed my last few minutes with Eusero (my horse for the day) who I had nicknamed Buddy as I had no idea what his real name was for most of the adventure. That evening we returned to our Casas where we enjoyed fresh, homemade Viñales food, rum and, for some, cigars under the stars. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

On Sunday we decided to head off to the Mural de Prehistoria/The Prehistoric Wall, which wasn’t very prehistoric at all. It is a post-revolutionary mural painted into the side of a mountain celebrating the prehistoric history of Cuba before colonialism and imperialism. Apparently, Diego Riviera helped to produce the “masterpiece”. To be quite frank, from a distance it looked like something a five year old could have painted, but up close you could see that a lot of care and delicate detail had been used to create the overall image.

We then went to lunch at a small Mediterranean style cafe, El Olivo, where I ate Caribbean style Patatas Bravas ( a lot spicier than the Spanish version) and a bowl of seafood pasta with shrimp/prawns and lobster for the shocking cost of only 6 CUC! I couldn’t believe it, especially as it took a lot of effort to eat the whole bowl of pasta. Seriously if lobster can be that cheap here why is it expensive everywhere else?

Our return to La Habana that afternoon was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Our dueña had told us she would arrange two taxis to take us back, so when the first one arrived we began to split into two groups of 5. That was unnecessary as we were soon told that all 10 of us plus the taxi driver were to fit into the car for our three hour journey back to La Habana. The taxi, which the driver had named Avión de Chavez, was a 1946 American car designed to hold 8. We then had the shock of our life when El Gato, yes that was our taxi driver’s name if you can believe it, actually took off like an airplane. We were powering down the road at an alarming rate dodging and passing everything in sight. It wasn’t long before Sarah made the connection between our taxi and the Knight Bus from the fifth Harry Potter instalment. There wasn’t a single difference between the two except maybe the presence of Harry Potter himself. El Gato then told us why it was that a 1946 car could drive so quickly. Under the hood was a 4 piston 1970s Czechoslovakian lorry engine with the potential to reach 120 mph! I’m pretty sure we hit that mark on the trip. Seeing the fear in some of our eyes, he comforted us with the news that he had been running that route for over 20 years with absolutely no problems so we had no need to worry, we would make it back alive.

Suddenly, he made a sharp turn to the left; we were going for petrol, but not at a petrol station. We ended up at his friend’s home where petrol was apparently more plentiful and cost effective than in La Habana. We were finally off the tourist routes and in the middle of a small Cuban village. It was a much needed break to stretch our cramped bodies, to breathe a sigh of relief and to truly take in the wonder of what we were actually throttling down the road in.

Two and half hours and one gorgeous sunset later, we were back home in Vedado, La Habana in utter awe of what had been an unexpectedly, incredible weekend.

*Due to limited internet access in Cuba, I am writing my posts and then uploading them to wordpress. This is the date the post was written.

As part of our trip to Key West, Florida, we wanted to visit as many local restaurants as we could.

As part of our trip to Key West, Florida, we wanted to visit as many local restaurants as we could. One of our stops brought us to El Meson de Pepe. We wanted to try a little of everything, so we opted to split a #80- a plate that had three different dishes: Lechon Asado (pork), Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), and Picadillo Habanero (ground beef). I tried a bowl of the black bean soup, and our meal came with both sweet plantains and the yucca. We also split a piece of their Key Lime Pie (Torta de Limon). We are also fans of Tres Leches cake, but could not pass up Key Lime in Key West.

I had not had Cuban food before (just hadn’t had the opportunity yet). My wife had Cuban food previously, and she felt the flavors and tone of the restaurant were consistent with her previous experience. They had musicians playing outside, and had set up heat in the covered outdoor dining area since it was a little cooler that night (though still plenty warm, as back in Wisconsin it was nearly below zero!) Overall, it was relaxing, yet invigorating atmosphere.

The food was delivered super-quickly. My black bean soup was quite delicious, and a great way to start off the meal. My wife is not much of a fan of pork, so I had that dish to myself, and it was excellent. The shredded beef was just as tasty. I was the most excited to try the ground beef dish due to the combination of “tomatoes, onions, garlic, bell peppers, cumin, bay leaves, oregano, olives, capers, and raisins”. I was perhaps a little surprised that the flavors on the dish weren’t a little stronger given the ingredients, but it was tasty nonetheless. We both loved the plantains, and I had never had yucca before, but it was also good- a unique flavor. The Key Lime Pie was a refreshing way to end our meal, as well. All considered, we would certainly go back, and recommend that you do too, if near Key West.

10 S. 2nd Street (2nd & Market)

Philadelphia, PA 19106

CHECK OUT THE MENU!

This past month featured Restaurant Week here in Philadelphia, and I had the opportunity to check out Cuba Libre with a couple of friends. The beauty about restaurant week is that you get to sample multiple courses from a prix fixe menu at a reduced price. In this case, we were each allowed to choose two appetizers, one entree, and one dessert for $35. But before we even had the opportunity to look at the food menu, we were distracted by the longwinded cocktail list, which includes 14 uniquely flavored mojitos!

Feeling pressured to try at least one of these specialty cocktails, we decide to order the Classic Mojito and sample it amongst the table. The mojito was fabulous but definitely not something that should be in conjunction with a heavy meal, and so we opted for a pitcher of Red Sangria to drink with our dinner ($37.50 and we got 8 glasses from it). The sangria was good, but nothing extraordinary (it is also not very strong, as 3 full glasses did not get my 100-lb self even remotely tipsy!).

But onto the food, which is what we came for in the first place! To start, our server brought us a nice basket of bread with an o-u-t-r-a-g-e-o-u-s mango butter. This light, almost whipped, butter transformed the bread into a sweet french toast-like dessert. Honestly, the flavored butter was probably my favorite item brought to the table all evening. It was memorable and unique.

For my first appetizer, I ordered the Pulpo con Berenjenas, which is a truffle and citrus marinated baby octopus that is then grilled and served atop a Haitian eggplant salad. The octopus was cooked perfectly and wasn’t rubbery in the least bit. The flavors were all well-balanced and the portion size was perfect, leaving me wanting one more forkful.

The Eight Hour Guava BBQ Ribs, on the other hand, were not as good as I had hoped they would be. I had high expectations for these “award winning” St. Louis cut pork ribs, glazed in a Guava BBQ Sauce with jicama-Sambal salad, but they were VERY fatty with hardly any meat at all. Very disappointing. Sad face.

Others at the table ordered the Empanadas stuffed with pulled pork, roasted poblano pepper, and charred tomatoes;

as well as the Sopa de Frijoles Negros, which was sweet rather than spicy; and finally the signature Cuban Tostones, which are twice-fried green plantains with a garlic-mojo dipping sauce. I thought the tostones and mojo sauce were both bland compared to those I’ve had at other Cuban restaurants.

Sensing that the Cuban food not up to par with what I had grown accustomed to in Miami, I decided to deviate from a traditional Cuban dish for my entree. Instead, I ordered El Pollo del Solar, which is a lime-garlic marinated chicken breast with caramelized onions & steamed kale, served with a black bean croqueta and a sweet and sour mango gravy. Technically, the chicken was cooked perfectly–juicy and succulent, but flavor-wise the dish was really lacking. I didn’t think the chicken was well seasoned, in fact I couldn’t detect any garlic notes and the black bean croqueta was very, very dry. Not even the mango gravy could restore it’s moisture content. The kale on the other hand, was very soft and delicious, as well as the mango gravy that bathed it.

Everyone else at the table ordered the traditional Arroz Con Pollo, which is saffron-scented rice, combined with boneless chicken thighs, wild mushrooms, green peas, Manzanilla olives and a hard-boiled egg. Garnishing the dish was an asparagus, palacio chorizo, and roasted Piquillo pepper salad, finished with a splash of Estrella Damm beer. The dish was enormous, and had beautiful presentation with the bright yellow color of the saffron, and the contrasting green of the peas and asparagus. I stole a couple of forkfuls from my friend Liz, and enjoyed them thoroughly, although it is not a traditional Cuban Arroz con Pollo. It was much lighter but very tasty in a unique way.

For dessert, I (predictably) ordered the Tres Leches de Caramelo, which is a vanilla sponge cake soaked in three-dulce de leche flavored milks with a mocha moose. I am a tres leches connoisseur, and this one was right up to par.

The other dessert that was ordered was the Dulce de Leche Ice Cream. Ice cream is ice cream. It was good!

Overall, I’m not in a hurry to go back to Cuba Libre for dinner. But, I am very interested in going back for a night of salsa dancing and mojitos (and maybe some bread with mango butter?!?!). Having spent 5 years living in Miami, I got accustomed to traditional Cuban food that was priced insanely cheap. This being said, I find it difficult to spend an exorbitant amount of money on Cuban cuisine that doesn’t satisfy my craving for the classic dishes. The restaurant atmosphere was very cool though and the mojitos are worth the trip.

Being a first generation Cuban-American, I cannot live without Cuban food. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy eating all kinds of ethnic foods (Italian, Greek, German, etc) but I cannot go by a week without eating my Cuban food. My body literally wigs out on me if I don’t have some lechon or frijoles colorado on a consistent basis.

Luckily, pork is considered to the other white meat.

Ingredients:

1 lb of pork chunks

1 cup of La Lechonera Mojo Criollo

1 onion (red or yellow)

1 tbsp ground cumin

1 tbsp oregano

1/4 cup of olive oil

1/2 cup of minced garlic

1 lime

2 tbsp of Adobo Seasoning

Salt and Pepper to taste

Start off by combining marinating the pork chunks with the mojo, adobo, oregano and cumin (For best results, leave pork chunks marinating in the refrigerator for 4 hours before cooking).

Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add garlic and onions. Stir for about three to five minutes or until onion is translucent.

If you do not have a large skillet, cook the chunks in batches. However, if you happen to have a deep dish iron pot like me, you can throw the pork chunks in there all together.

Cook pork chunks until golden brown. Add salt and pepper to taste!

Serve with lime wedges.

New York, NY 10013
Neighborhoods: Civic Center, TriBeCa

With the big red flag, this place is hard to miss. The place is really casual and very friendly. Although there are no fancy plating or fancy decor, the place is worth visiting and is a very popular lunch joint. It was crowded with people shoving the cashiers with money in exchange for the delicious food. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick bite to satisfy your taste buds as long as your wallet, this is the place to go.

The outside and inside of this restaurant isn’t appealing. The atmosphere within the restaurant is noisy and hectic. I’m going to warn you though… the food is EXTREMELY OILY. So don’t come crying back to me when you find a pimple the next day.

But what really captures our interest in this restaurant is the AMAZING food here and it’s relatively CHEAP too. In less than 5 minutes of ordering, our food was already on our tables. It’s almost as fast as fast food, but better! The waitress may be hard to understand and may mix up your order, so make sure she doesn’t give you the wrong thing! But nevertheless, the ordering mistake turned out to be delicious. We originally wanted beans, but we were given plantains and I DO NOT REGRET IT one bit at all.

We ordered a Baked Chicken Meal and a Pulled Pork Sandwich with a twist. Both very delicious dishes that were recommended by others. The baked chicken was juicy, tender, and mouth-watering, even though it oozed of oil. The skin of the chicken was sweet and seasoned very well. The rice was delicious too, but I suspect it was cooked in butter and oil because of how thick and smooth it was. It came with a side of plantains…. and they were probably the BEST plantains I’ve ever had so far. It’s like a mix of having the sweet taste of bananas with the texture of a potato.

The pulled pork sandwich was pretty darn good too! It had a very smokey flavor and it had plantains too!!! They had this green sauce too! Not sure whats in it, but I think it has cilantro. It’s sweet and tangy and adds a good kick to the sandwich. The pork was a bit dry, but it was definitely enjoyable.

Overall, I would definitely check this place out. Not the greatest place if you’re looking for a romantic atmosphere, but it has some delicious food!

Pinky says: 5/5

SO GOOD. SO MUCH FOOD. Vic and I came here after my work session at Euphoria Spa and tried the recommended dishes and was not disappointed at all. Although the staff was a bit rushed because there were many customers, they seemed tired and over-worked but still served us on time. It was great! They were very fast and good workers. All food had many flavors sunk into it. We had the baked chicken with side of yellow rice and plantains. The plantains, I was a bit afraid to try but they were delicious too!! As you may know, I am more of a potato person and I was reminded often that the plantains tasted like potatoes! But maybe even better! We were actually going to get the beans but the waitress misunderstood me. She gave us plantains with the yellow rice. The rice was so oily but it was oily goodness. I wish the baked chicken had a bit more meat in it though.

The pulled pork with a twist was very tasty too. The sandwich was oddly matched pretty well with the plantains too. THE GREEN SAUCE IS SO DARN ADDICTING.. YUMM-OH. I kept drowning it in everything….even writing about it now, my stomach is growling…GRR GRRR…

Ingredient’s :

2 teaspoons cumin seed
6 large garlic cloves, minced
1 large serrano chili, stemmed, minced
3/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons sour orange juice

Method :

Stir cumin seeds in heavy medium skillet over medium-high heat until seeds are fragrant and slightly darker in color, about 2 minutes. Transfer seeds to medium bowl. Add minced garlic, minced chili and salt to seeds; mash mixture with back of fork to form coarse paste. Heat olive oil in same skillet over medium-high heat until very hot, about 2 minutes. Pour hot olive oil over garlic mixture; stir to blend. Let stand 15 minutes. Whisk in orange juice and lime juice. Add chicken to marinade; turn to coat. Cover chicken and refrigerate over night.
Put chicken on a baking rack an roast until internal temperature has reached 160 F, all the while basting with the marinade. When done, remove from oven, let rest for 15 minutes. Carry-over heat will take the temperature to a safe 165 F, while leaving the chicken very moist and tender.

Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to attend Gwdihw’s (Cardiff) second Cigar & Rum night Cuba Calling. The venue was packed out. From the onset it looked promising (at a more than reasonable £10 for two drink vouchers and tasty ribs & roasties). I was a little unsure what to expect from Cuban food although it sounded very exciting.

On arrival at the venue the mood was relaxed and welcoming, the sensual rhymic Cuban music complimented the food well, adding a relaxed vibe to the evening. It was evident by the buzzing and engaged conversation around me that everyone was enjoying themselves. Excited at the prospect of a Rum based cocktail I headed for the bar. The barman was already in the swing of things, mixing cocktails to the beat.

I chose a ‘Culto a Lavida’ and my sister the ‘El Presidente’. Around me the hazy smoke of aromatic cigars floated into the night sky, as the cigar rollers advised on the ‘ complex and thankless’ task of smoking a cigar.

It turns out that Cuban food is a fusion of many cultures:

‘Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisine. Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish and African cooking, with some Caribbean influence in spice and flavor’. Wikipedia.

The tarte cranberry juice in my cocktail brought an edge to the smooth South American Havana 7 rum and accentuated the sticky sweet succulent Barbeque Ribs I indulged in ( there was a choice between BBQ and dry). The meat fell off the bone, the sauce was rich chocolately brown and there were hints of muscovado sugar and citrus. I finished the lot, not without making a mess however! The ribs were positively finger lickingly good – this was very much food for the soul. As for the potatoes – The soft fluffy insides of the baby roasties that accompanied were gently nested in their crispy well seasoned jackets, the flavour bursting out through each bite. The portions were more than generous – although I cheekily went back for more.

This would be great place to go as a couple and equally welcoming enough to go on your own or with friends. I was served at all times with a smile at all times and even lucky enough to receive attentive table service. I left for the evening, my once hungry stomach comforted by feel good food. I would highly recommend this evening and urge you not to miss out on a very popular event, your stomach needs it!

The Cuban is a new Restaurant and Lounge Bar that has opened up in The Oracle, Broadbeach. You can check out their Facebook page, here.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was perfect, the music was at a good level, the lighting was excellent and the set out is practical and looks great. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor and a really sleek but comfortable environment. They have a strong colour theme of red, black, brown and wood.

I went in on a Wednesday night which isn’t a typically busy night. It is easy for a restaurant to seem cool when it is busy, however if a restaurant is cool and has a good atmosphere on a quieter night, you know it is good, going from this, The Cuban is definitely good!

Every dish on their Menu looks delicious, it was really hard choosing what to eat!

For the Entree I had Crispy Calamari served with lime aioli. It was incredible, the Calamari was not oily or greasy and it smelt delicious. The lime aioli complemented the Calamari extremely well and enhanced the flavours nicely.

As a main I had the Spiced Salmon marinated in citrus juices with herbed roast vegetables. Salmon is my favourite food and I have high expectations which is one of the reasons I ordered it, the dish did not disappoint! I like my salmon well done, it is usually cooked medium, because of the extra cooking time, my vegetables cam out cold. I tried them and the flavours were excellent and I was apologised to for the mistake in the cooking time. However it didn’t impact on my dining experience. The salmon on its own had a beautiful flavour and it melted in my mouth. It filled me up without being overfull and bloated. The spices on the salmon were perfect, they weren’t too hot.

I was dying to try the butterscotch profiteroles for dessert, but I was too full after dinner, so they are definitely on my list for next time! I had a really great night out, I would give them a 10 for service, the staff were extremely attentive and polite. I will definitely be back, trying different dishes each time!

If you’re on the Gold Coast I would definitely recommend dining at The Cuban!

What is your favourite Cuban restaurant?

Love Annie xoxo

I had dinner at The Cuban Place Restaurant with a few girlfriends last month and absolutely loved their paella, white wine sangria and semifreddo (or ice cream cake). They also had a graffiti wall where we wrote our names and just a really fun, summery, lively and buzzy atmosphere. So JET and I headed back there last Wednesday because we were craving their cool, refreshing sangria.

The Cuban Place Restaurant (formerly under a more complicated name: ‘La Bodeguita del Medio Sydney’) is designed to look like a 1950s restaurant/bar in Havana. I haven’t been to Havana but I can safely say that this spacious restaurant/bar looks like it could be from the set of ‘Dirty Dancing Havana Nights’ (my only exposure to Havana..). It was only after some research this week that I learned that the real ‘La Bodeguita del Medio’ in Havana claims to be the birthplace the Mojito and was frequented by writer Ernest Hemingway – he famously wrote ‘My Mojito in La Bodeguita’…. So next time, I’ll be trying the Mojito! The bar specializes in rum (which goes into a Mojito) as evidenced by the large barrels at the entrance.

The restaurant area is spacious with dark furniture, high ceilings and low lighting. The décor felt artsy and quirky with Spanish signs on the brick walls and arches as well as graffiti walls (our names were there from last time although they were repainting section for new patrons to write!).

The bar area is separate with its own street entrance and has high blue ceilings with metallic fans and Cuban artwork on the walls.

Apparently a Cuban band plays live music here most nights of the week (unfortunately I missed hearing them both of the times I was here). They still played loud Cuban/Spanish music at the bar which made it difficult for JET and I to have a D&M over dinner but added to the lively theme.

After deliberating over their Latin-inspired menu….

…..JET had Tamales Rellenos (Lentil & corn truffle, served with sour cream, Cuban bread & a quinoa salad, $28). She particularly liked the salad and crispy, salty Cuban bread.

I chose the Pollo Relleno (Spiced chicken thigh with a chorizo & cashew stuffing, served with a quinoa & papaya salad, $29). The stuffed chicken was the perfect mix of salty and spicy especially with the tangy sauce on the side.

I wish there had been more yummy stuffed chicken although I did feel very healthy after eating such a generous portion of papaya salad.

JET and I shared a jug of white wine sangria ($20) which was the perfect thirst quencher in the hot Sydney summer …. It had a sharp, fruity taste with a hint of lime and mint.

I still think that the Paella Criolla ($49 for 2 people) that we had last time was the best dish I have had here.

The service was great, the food was yummy and the place was buzzing. A great place to go with a group of friends to share a meal and some sangria and other Cuban inspired drinks before heading out to dance.

Head there now, after visiting the Gaffa exhibition maybe??

If you’ve read my blogs before, you know I’m not only a fashion fanatic, but a foodie as well. Instead of making a 2013 bucket list of what you hope to accomplish this year, make a list of your Restaurant Resolutions. In other words, the places you want to eat this year. Places you’ve heard about, those on your wishlist, or even those you’ve already tried. See how many establishments you can conquer this year. In the meantime, have a look at my extensive restaurant run-down and see if some of these yummy eats are worth adding to your own list.

In no particular order whatsoever…

Sirio Ristorante - It just opened this past October in NYC. Indeed, it is rare to find upscale dining venue of this caliber that is available for all three- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Named after the legendary restaurateur Sirio Maccioni of the famed Le Cirque and Circo, it’s said to be amazing. And, as I’ve said many times, I’m a huge Le Cirque fan. I’m dying to try their cheese fondue, made with fontina and bitto cheese, poached eggs, black truffles, and crostinis. I’d also love to try the Asparagi con Uova Gratinati e Tartufo Nero (asparagus, fried egg gratin, black truffles); the Riso Mantecato alla Zucca, Madorle, Amaretto, e Gorgonzola (vialone nano pumpkin risotto, pignoli nuts, amaretto cookie crumbs, gorgonzola); the Pera Affogata al Cardamomo (poached pear, almond cake, cardamom gelato, zabaglione); and the Torta di Sambuca e Cioccolato Affumicato (sambuca & smoked chocolate cake, anise ice cream).

Baci Ristorante – Since I’ll be in San Diego this Spring, I figure it’s a great opportunity to hit up this spot. The Linguine Mussels Genovese (made with pesto, garlic, cream and black mussels) and Penne alla Carson (made with asparagus, prosciutto, peas, and cream sauce with Parmesan cheese) look delish. And, I wouldn’t throw the Penne Quattro Formagi, Penne alla Salmone, Tortellini con Prosciutto, Scampi Lobster, and Pork Chop alla Tartufata out of bed either.

Black And Blue – This fine restaurant is in Huntington, NY. Menu items like the Lobster Crusted Atlantic Salmon with Crushed Fingerling Potatoes, Wilted Baby Spinach, and Truffle Butter Sauce; Filet and Gorgonzola Fondue; Their Mac and Cheese menu alone has me salvating. As if having truffle mac and lobster mac wasn’t enough, they have duck mac and cheese to boot. Um, yes please! And if you really want to get serious, there’s the “Party In A Glass” dessert: Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry Gelato with Brownies, Banana Bread, Toffee, Marshmallows, Berries, Caramel, Peanut Butter Sauce, Chocolate Sauce, Whipped Cream and Oreo Cookies.

Luke’s Lobster – Both Maryland and New York have the pleasure of housing this franchise. As a lobster fiend, I’m down for anything in this category. I’ve had a taste of their menu before and, as someone who’s not a big mayo fan, I love that their lobster rolls can come with or without it. I also love that they carry Maine Root sodas. Their sarsparilla is a favorite of my dad’s and mine. One thing I have to get my hands on is their Lobster Grilled Cheese with Maine lobster sandwiched between two slices of organic white bread and Gruyere cheese. The bread is Maine-made as well. Do we notice a pattern here?

2 West – I was supposed to eat here months ago, but my schedule interfered. Located at the Ritz-Carlton in Battery Park, you can dine on any meal throughout the day. I have quite a few of their creations on my mind. For example, their Almond Pancakes Short Stack with Caramelized Banana & Roasted Vanilla Bean Syrup and their butter-poached Lobster Bisque are screaming my name right now.

Rise No1 - Dallas has created a delicious monster with this one. I’m definitely hoping to stop by this fab-looking place and dine on everything from their Marshmallow Soup to their Parisian Jambon Sandwich. I also hope to sip on drinks like their Housemade Seltzer or their Chardonnay-Apricot Iced Tea. And, for those who may need it, the restaurant can provide braille menus for their blind customers. How fab is that?!

Dakota’s Steakhouse – While we’re talking about Dallas dining, I’m in the market for Dakota’s. I am definitely putting the Fritto Misto (Fried Rock Shrimp, Calamari, Asparagus, Artichoke Hearts, and Saffron Aioli); Black Truffle Mac and Cheese; Atlantic Salmon with Asparagus Orzo, Saffrom Fume’, and Heirloom Tomato Jam; and Sweet Potato Roasted with a Caramelized Maple-Butter Glaze on my “to eat” list.

Lavo – Okay, back to the NYC scene. When the sun goes down it’s a hot nightclub, but the dancing isn’t the only fab-ness in the building. This Italian restaurant features items like a 16 ounce Kobe Beef Meatball, Spinach and Artichoke Brick Oven Pizza, a Margherita Salad served over a Tomato Pizza, Brick Oven Salmon Oreganato, and Truffle Parmesan Fries. I don’t know where to start.

Peking Duck House – Now, the one I’m talking about is the Chinatown location. It basically has the same menu as their Midtown restaurant, but it’s a tad less expensive, which is always a plus. I dined here a couple times before with my family when I was very young, but haven’t nailed down a time to re-visit. This will definitely be a mission of mine this year. Of course, you don’t have to get the Peking duck if you don’t want to, but…. why would you go to a place called the Peking Duck House and not? For $29.00 a person, the Peking Duck Dinner includes tableside service, one peking duck and several additional entrees (depending on the number of people in your party). You also get an appetizer, soup, and dessert. Not a bad deal. Oh, and it’s BYOB, which is always nice too.

Taco Tonto’s – I definitely want to try the Baby Burritos here in Kent, Ohio. Every year I visit Kent for their Homecoming since I’m a proud Alum. This is one of the new eateries that’s popped up in Kent as they’ve been building up the area. I’m going to go for a baby burrito with chicken, sweet potato, rice, and cheese in between all the college nostalgia.

Luigi’s Restaurant – There are so many Luigis out there, but not like the one in downtown Akron, Ohio. This past year I wasn’t able to stop by, but I have a good feeling about this year! This savory spot is the epitome of Mom-and-Pop. They take cash only, no reservations, and the line is usually out the door, but it moves pretty fast. They are noted for their salad, which is topped with so much freshly shredded cheese that it might as well be a cheese salad… but it’s oh so good. Whenever I go, I have to get their Pizza Bianco with tomatoes on top. It’s not your typical white pizza and the white sauce they use is an old family recipe that they refuse to share with me. I just wish they could send me my Bianco in NJ! P.S. It means a lot coming from an NJ/NY resident, who speaks from the land of amazing pizza, to pay homage to this Italian gem in Ohio.

Fleming’s Steakhouse - I’m sure you’ve heard of this restaurant since there are dozens of them scattered across the country. I’m putting it on this list because I’ve yet to eat here. Plus, their menu isn’t just like every other run-of-the-mill chain steakhouse… Fleming’s Lobster Tempura, Filet Mignon Skewers with Gorgonzola-Bacon Fondue, Lite Filet Mignon, and Pan Crisped Pork Belly all sound pretty good to me.

Mt. Fuji Restaurant - You can pick either their NY or their NJ location, but I hear their NY restaurant is the one to choose. A friend of mine ate here and spoke well of it, which turned me on to the place. It’s also a great setting for weddings, banquets, and other special occasions. One thing that I definitely want to indulge in is their Sunday Brunch. This gourmet brunch is $27.00 and has everything you could imagine. Some of the choices I would like to try are the Wild, Spanish Risotto; Atlantic Salmon in a Seafood Cream Sauce; Chicken Renato with Artichokes; Texas Style French Toast; Ravioli with Lobster Sauce; and Assorted Sushi. If the brunch isn’t your thing though, they have a regular menu, hibachi tables, and even Murder Mystery Shows. Enjoy!

Italian Cucina – In New Hope, Pennsylvania, this little secret is run by the Lombardi family. Their special meals are prepared with love and amazing service, giving each diner a family-oriented dining experience. It’s very quaint, set in a house with just a few tables. There’s no real menu, as the owner likes to improvise on what he wants to cook for his guests. Truly unique. It’s also BYOB and is basically known by word-of-mouth. Hey, that’s how I found out about it. I can’t wait to have a taste of Cucina!

The Villa by Barton G – The restaurant inside the Versace Mansion… Yes, there is a restaurant inside the Versace Mansion in South Beach, Miami for those of you who haven’t heard yet. The mansion also serves as a luxury hotel! But, let’s get back to the dining room. Choose from two pre-set menus, the chef’s tasting menu, or the general menu. Try the Sage Roasted Farm Chicken with Sprout Spinach, Bantam Corn, Ramp, and Morel Fricassee. However, I’m a little more excited about the Duo of Beef Rossini, which is a Wagyu Tenderloin & Black Angus Short Rib with Foie Gras, Truffled Taro, Spring Leeks, and Bing Cherry Bordelaise. The Golden Beignets, dusted with 24 Karat Gold Leaf, with a Cinnamon Hot Chocolate-Cafe’ Foam are what really have me going gaga though.

Randall’s on the Orchard – In Orefield, PA, this restaurant sits amidst the land’s incredible orchards. Featuring several dining rooms, the restaurant is actually in the restored Queen Victoria Inn, with a very relaxed setting. One reason that I want to go here is that there is a drive-in movie theatre only a couple miles from the orchard. Another reason is the atmosphere and food selection. I’m on-board with the Sautéed Shrimp Française appetizer, the Chilean Sea Bass Rouget, the Cedar Plank Salmon, Stuffed Tilapia, and Randall’s Combination (Lobster tail française served with petite mignon topped with mushroom cap and Béarnaise sauce).

Served with pico de gallo and sour cream.); Lobster Burger (Surf N’ Turf! Beef patty topped with grilled lobster and truffled aioli on a Kaplan’s Bakery egg-washed roll with Old bay fries.); Lobster Crab Cake Burger (Fresh lobster and lump crab patty sauteed and topped with chopped tomato, sliced cucumbers and red onions with a fresh citrus aioli on a Kaplan’s egg-washed roll, served with Old Bay fries.); Cheesesteak Pretzel Roll Burger (It’s “Wiz Wit”. All beef hot dog topped with grilled lobster on a toasted potato bun with truffle aioli, served with Old Bay fries and a spicy pickle spear.); Double Bacon Cheeseburger Soup (Creamy cheese soup with ground beef, bacon, tomatoes, onions, pickles and lettuce…finished with a drizzle of ketchup and mustard with onion rings on the side.) Bananas John Foster Shake (Vanilla ice cream, fresh banana, Sailor jerry Spiced Rum, banana liqueur & maple syrup topped with whipped cream and banana slices.); Peanut Butter Bacon Shake (Vanilla ice cream, creamy peanut butter, real bacon and vanilla vodka.); Krispy Kreme Sundae (Two mini-Krispy Kreme donuts grilled and topped with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, chocolate-covered bacon, whipped cream and cherries.)… Can you hear your arteries clogging??? I love that sound…

Striphouse – With two locations in NYC and one in Las Vegas, I’ve wanted to check this place out for a little while. Their lobster bisque with pearl couscous, bufala mozzarella & artichoke salad, goose fat potatoes, warm garlic bread with gorgonzola fondue, maine lobster linguine in a lemon-cream and lobster bordelaise, creamed corn with pancetta, and black truffle creamed spinach all sound incredible. They also have a 24-layer chocolate cake that serves 8-10 people and you can buy in online for $100.00. As one of the restaurants of BR Guest Hospitality, I’m sure this place is a home-run.

The Seafood Rivoli (fresh shrimp, scallops and lobster tail sautéed with mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes then finished in olive oil, garlic, basil and white wine over whole wheat spaghetti); Salmon Soprano (salmon, shrimp and mussels sautéed in olive oil, garlic and basil then finished in a light plum tomato sauce over angel hair pasta); Parmigian Sampler (chicken, veal, shrimp and eggplant Parmigian served over linguine); or the Chicken Felicia (chicken breast stuffed with broccoli, cheddar, mozzarella and Romano cheese breaded and baked then topped with an oven roasted garlic Romano cheese sauce served with cheese raviolis)?

Mussel Pot - While we’re on the subject on Mussels, let’s talk about NYC’s Mussel Pot. I’ve been here once and it was delicious. Sure, they have things besides mussels, but let’s get real. You come here for the mussels. Order from a menu of over a dozen variations from the Lobster Bisque Mussels (marinated in sherry, brandy, baby shrimp, peas, shallots, lobster, and crawfish meat) to the Pesto Mussels (marinated in basil, pine nuts, parmesan, olive oil, and garlic cream) to the Chef’s Best (lobster, cheese fondue, hard-smoked bacon, and roasted wild mushrooms). Okay, now I’m hungry.

Charley’s Ocean Grill – This recently renovated restaurant in Long Branch is great for casual dining or even a date. I threw a surprise birthday dinner here and was pleased to say the least. It’s reasonably priced and quite delicious. Try the Roasted Mussels, Lobster Ravioli topped with Crab Meat, any of the Grilled Flatbread Pizzas, the Jersey Burger served on a Colossal English Muffin, and Sweet Potato Tots. I can’t wait to go back and sink my teeth into one of these.

Oceana Grill – I know I just mentioned the Oceana Restaurant, but now I’m onto the Oceana Grill in Stirling, NJ. I could go for their Prosciutto, Sliced Pears, & Parmesan Cheese Appetizer right now… I don’t remember how I heard about this place, but, regardless of that, I want to give it a go at some point. Since it’s not too far from me and they have courses like the Shrimp & Roasted Tomato Risotto, Pappardelle Vodka, Tyropitakia, Stuffed Shrimp over Brown Rice, and Spanakopita, I need to go. I also wouldn’t mind going there just for dessert… Peanut Butter Banana Gelato, Basil Gelato, Campari Grapefruit Sorbet, and Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet, HELLO!!!!!!!!!

Jose Garces is one of the most prominent Latino chefs in the United States and in his new cookbook “The Latin Road Home: Savoring the Foods of Ecuador, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, and Peru,” new readers and long-time followers of the Ecuadorian chef will be able to fully understand and appreciate the gastronomic influences that have inspired Garces’ culinary style.

“The Latin Road Home: Savoring the Foods of Ecuador, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, and Peru”

At 40 years old, Garces – who won the James Beard Foundation award for “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic” in 2009 – has more than ten restaurants (serving Basque-style tapas, Mexican street fare and refined Peruvian food) to his name across the nation. And in his follow-up book to 2009’s “Latin Evolution,” Garces writes about the Latin foods and places that have inspired his career as a chef, as well as the family and friends who have encouraged his culinary journey. That is what he calls “The Latin Road Home.”

“The Latin Road Home” is divided into sections, each devoted to five distinct cultures: Ecuador (his parents emigrated from the capital city of Quito), Spain (where he spent time after culinary school), Cuba (both his wife and beloved mentor, Douglas Rodriguez, are Cuban), Mexico (growing up, he would go grocery shopping with his father in Chicago’s Mexican mercados) and Peru (“my real exploration of this cuisine is just getting started”). Just as a travel writer would, Garces introduces each section with maps, history, topical information and a concise summary of its classic cuisine. Essential recipes characteristic of each culture (think Ecuadorian-style fried pork, elegant Peruvian ceviche, Spanish almond gazpacho, Mexican antojitos like quesadillas de huazontle and savory Cuban sandwiches) are then shared, each accompanied by Garces’ personal anecdotes and treasured memories. And while no “essential” Latin cookbook would be complete without recipes for basics like white rice and caramelized onions, Garces includes his chef know-how with great tips, tricks and family menus to follow when cooking his favorite dishes.

“This book is a deeply personal project for me: It allows me to trace the cultures and cuisines that have shaped me, both personally and professionally,” says the Food Network Iron Chef season 2 winner. “Throughout my career, I have built on what I know and used it to explore new and different places, and this book traces that journey – and with it, my life to this point.”

And it’s a delicious journey, written in hopes that readers will create family memories centered around food, just as Garces has over the years. In celebration of family, friends and plenty of delicious meals, here’s his sophisticated take on crema de quinoa de zuleta – Ecuadorian quinoa chowder with sweet corn – which was a favorite of Garces as a child and remains so to this day.

Crema de quinoa de zuleta

Crema de Quinoa de Zuleta (Quinoa Chowder with Sweet Corn)

From “The Latin Road Home: Savoring the Foods of Ecuador, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, and Peru” (Lake Isle Press)

Author’s note: Fresh corn is always the best choice, but may not be in season when you find yourself most in need of this kind of creamy, comforting sustenance—so frozen corn is fine in a pinch. Serves 4

2 cups vegetable oil, for frying

1 small russet potato, peeled and cut into matchsticks

Kosher salt

2 Tbsp unsalted butter

1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1/2 Spanish onion, finely chopped

2 Tbsp minced garlic (4 to 6 cloves)

1 1/2 cups quinoa (any color)

Kernels cut from 2 ears fresh white sweet corn or 1 cup thawed and drained frozen white corn kernels

5 cups vegetable stock

1 cup heavy cream

2 Tbsp minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

2 Tbsp minced fresh chives or cut into 1 1/2-inch strips

1/4 lb smoked bacon, cut into strips, cooked until crisp, and drained

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat the vegetable oil to 375°F in a Dutch oven over medium heat, using a candy or deep-fry thermometer to monitor the temperature.

Fry the potatoes in batches, turning in the oil until golden brown and very crispy on all sides, 1 to 2 minutes per batch. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried potatoes to the baking sheet to drain and cool. Season to taste with salt.

Heat the butter and olive oil in a stockpot over medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic, stirring occasionally, until translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir in the achiote paste and cook for another 5 minutes. Stir in the quinoa and corn and cook, stirring often, until the grain is lightly toasted, about 5 minutes. Add the stock and cream and bring to a boil. Decrease the heat to medium-low and simmer the chowder uncovered until the quinoa is very tender and the liquid is reduced by one-quarter, about 45 minutes.

To serve, fold in the parsley, chives, bacon, and fried potatoes. Season to taste with salt. Garnish with avocado.

So Noche Buena (i.e. Christmas Eve) has come and gone and I wrestled with whether or not I should post something about it. Last year I wrote about Noche Buena and, not to toot my own horn or anything, felt like I did a pretty damn good job of explaining it. I gave a bit of a history lesson and an account of the roast from start to finish. If you need some refreshing please visit the archived post, “A Good Night Starts with a Pig.”

So I wondered what could I talk about in this post that I haven’t already covered. I mean, I love roast pig and could tell the ancient stories of Cuban mythology and the perfect chicharron over and over again but other than my friends who love to talk about knowing someone who knows someone who can get us a Caja China so we can finally do our own roast, I don’t know how many people would find these re-accounts interesting. But then I realized something special about this year’s lechon (i.e. roast pig) – not only did my dad NOT do it in a Caja China but I also took many more pictures than last year.

So in an attempt to not be as wordy as I usually am and to stick to the adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” or my personal favorite quote from my dad “why read books when you can watch the movie,” I present to you Noche Buena: The Picture Book.

**Please note, I like to caption below the picture. So the story is told with the picture first then the explanation.

I unfortunately missed the actual seasoning of the pig the night before. My high school friends had a holiday party and I was obligated to attend. But upon my return to the house and grabbing a glass of water before going to bed, I saw this in the living room. Aw…childhood memories immediately flooded my mind: a dead pig, splayed on a table, in the living room, marinating in mojo.

So this crazy invention is the concrete block pit. Modern day technology gives us the Caja China but before that there was this – the concrete block pit built atop a slab of concrete. Now before THAT there was the pit dug into the ground but as I’ve mentioned before nobody wants to ruin their landscaping.

Here’s another close-up of the actual pit. I wish I could’ve videotaped my dad’s rants. He sounded like a crazy Bill Nye the Science Guy constructing this pit with a science behind being able to get the amount of heat and evenly distribute it throughout the pig.

And here’s the beautiful pig, butterflied, squashed between between metal grates, roasting.

And so the chicharron begins. Quick repeat of what chicharron is – it’s the yummy skin of the pig that’s get all crispy. Here my dad is cutting off the chicharron from the pig. Please notice the yummy delicious meat as well.

One more look at the beautiful chicharron.

And Noche Buena wouldn’t be complete without the side dishes: yuca, cuban bread, rice and black beans.

Hopefully these pictures did Noche Buena justice. We’ll see if this summer we finally get our own roasted pig event in Washington, DC! And if we do, be sure there will be a long multi-series post about it. Felicidades!

Padrino’s Cuban Bistro, 13586 Village Park Dr., Orlando, FL 32837 Plus 3 other locations in South Florida.

In a stylish new shopping center, 10 minutes from Disney World, this authentic Cuban restaurant is welcoming, lovely, busy, and tantalizingly tasty. I happened in on the second Saturday of the month, to find their monthly Pig Roast buffet going on. Wow! At first I wasn’t sure if I should order the Cubano sandwich I was looking forward to tasting, or the buffet. After the words “Sangria is included” I was hooked! Let’s go!

A beautifully roasted pig with a plantain in its mouth was the star of this show. However, every bite on the buffet was DIVINE. Salad to start, white rice I covered with a heavy-handed drizzle of this garlicy oniony sauce (OMG addictive), yucca (that I dipped in THE SAUCE), red beans and rice with a lush ‘gravy’, sweet plantains, fresh made chicharron (pork rinds) with a lovely green sauce (FAB), and to finish….the juicy roasted pork. Heavenly. Mind you, after being seated, the table was given tostones with THE SAUCE much like receiving a bread basket. This was mega better.

You know it is a place that does Cuban food right, because the clientele were mostly Cuban and many, older. They were relishing every fork full. Now that is good eats!

All you can eat of this Cuban delight, for $15.99….including soda, beer, wine, or SANGRIA! The sangria was de-lish. Available the second Saturday of the month, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.

Located in Montclair, Cuban Pete’s is the place to go for authentic CUBAN FOOD! There are 3 festive dining rooms, and an outdoor patio that seats plenty, with decorative palm trees and Tiki torches. Personal favorites-Pollo Cunabo, and Churrasco! Go in a big group, because you will want to try the entire menu.
It is a BYOB, and they offer to mix your choice of sangria.
There will be a long wait, at times more than an hour, especially for dinner. Montclair is filled with shops, bars and entertainment, so be sure to explore during your wait time.
