I kinda feel bad. I really abandoned my blog since May 2009. Why? I guess I could come up with excuses such as school, life, lacked of interest or whatever people will say to avoid personal responsibility. I’m not one of those people and I like to consider myself as someone who is honest and who takes responsibility most of the time when I drop the ball.

When I forget to present an update report of my one of my patients to my supervising clinician at the university clinic, I accept the blame and I mentally expect to be punished. My clinicians, one in particular, are gracious enough to not punish me as often as I deserve.

But for the last 7 months, I chose to not blog and I don’t know why. I read somewhere that it may be because I had nothing interesting to say which would be valid excuse. But I’m not buying it. I published 3 blog posts in April and it was my best month stats-wise with 173 page views. In May, I published a single post and not surprisingly my viewership declined with 96 views. That downward trend continued the following months and November, the last month without a blog post, there were only 67 views.

But through a great chiropractic student who is an inspiration to me, Alex Rinehart, I discovered Chris Guillebeau’s blog, The Art of Non-Conformity and this post in particular. It made me reflect on the year 2009 and the fact that I abandoned my blog and my handful of readers. I’m sorry. I’m not sorry about the declined viewership because I deserved this. I’m sorry because I did not deliver what I told you I was going to do in my first post:

What to expect of “Dr. Dany Morin” is my health advice because while I am still in university, I do treat patients. You’ll also have a behind to scenes look at the step-by-step work to build my practice because I definitely want to start working and helping people the day after I graduate. So my clinic better be ready to open at that time, fully functional. Finally, I am going to share another thing with you, my inspiration and feature the people that changed or are shaping my mind. You might also be drawn to these people because they are all amazing in their own way.

After I stopped posting for a month, I started to come up with excuses in the only post published in February:

The lack of personal time is one of the reason why I don’t blog much but I’ll make an effort to write again soon.

When I started posting once a month, I accepted it as the new and normal posting schedule. Finally, no post came after May 2009.

So no more new excuses. I’m taking full responsibility for letting you down and I’ll be posting at least a new post every week. Now that I’m back into the game, I’m excited about future blog posts. I’ve already written, but not yet proofread the second entry in my scientific studies series and I’m writing a post about some of chiropractic doctors that inspire me. I also deeply want to update you about my life during my final year in my chiropractic doctoral program. So many positive and exciting things are happening right now. I can’t wait to tell you all about them.

This weekend two things happened that forced me to de- and re-construct life in Cuba:

1. I took a trip to Santiago de Cuba (the eastern tip of the island, opposite extreme of La Habana) with the Harvard University Cuba program, funded by Mr. H.

2. One of my American friends also studying here came back to Cuba, after leaving to go to Paris for two weeks.

Santiago –

Fantastic! Lovely city, lovely itinerary, lovely to get out of Havana for a while and be a legitimate tourist. Our schedule was pretty packed, but my favorite parts of the trip were when we visited the house of a former propaganda poster artist Goire and then the house of a Santeria priest in El Cobre. At the poster artist’s house we got to look through his entire collection of posters, from the 70s to the present, including some that were going to be exhibited in the coming December. The historical ones were very cool, and I purchased two from the 70s Zafra for a pretty good price (American capitalism speaking). The Santeria priest’s house was painted on all walls inside and out with images from his dreams, mostly with saints doing weird things and runaway slaves (it was called the “casa del Cimarrón” or house of the runaway slave) and stuff, and there were also figures and little sculpture things around the walls integrated into the paintings of Cuban Orishas, and other weird stuff hanging from the wall. We also saw his altar, where he communicates with the dead, which was pretty cool too, I guess.

Although all the different things we saw were very interesting, what struck me most emotionally about the trip was the amount of guilt I felt partaking in all the activities, and more than anything, in eating the meals. The trip was Harvard funded, which basically meant that we did everything the touristy way—using goods and services in the CUC economy and staying away from the Cuban peso ones (which are usually about 20 fold cheaper and also much lower quality).  The Cuban double economy, for the past two months, had been an unfortunate situation that I could avoid if I wished by going to mostly Cuban places, succumbing to use CUC (the US dollar equivalent) only for necessities like internet, dance classes and entrance into clubs, and the occasional treat ($2 earrings or this delicious boxed mango juice). Mostly, however, being the cheap Chinese person I am, I tried to use government-subsidized goods as much as I could. I used the guaguas (big public buses), whichs cost only 40 cents Cuban pesos (about 2 cents USD), I ate street pizza and 1 peso ice cream and shopped at the cheap agros. Even though I had the funds to use tourist taxis or eat good food, it felt a little snobby to do so and live in this country, especially because so many of those things are completely inaccessible to most Cubans.

Anyways, while I was in Santiago, I thought about the last time I had participated in a Harvard funded activity, which was orientation week. Obviously, back then, I knew nothing about Cuba, and didn’t really understand that I was participating in very touristy, inaccessible-to-most-Cubans activities. I remember thinking that the $5 meals we were getting were so cheap for the amount and quality of food we got, that all the rumors I had heard about food shortages in Cuba were completely unfounded because look—there I was, eating a huge plate of shrimp and vegetables and tropical fruit, all for less than $10! Based on the laws of supply and demand, there couldn’t be a food shortage.

I had forgotten, then, of course, that the laws of supply and demand don’t really hold if you’re dealing with a socialist economy. After two months of eating rice, beans, street pizza, canned vegetables, and guava almost every day, after thinking that microwaved tomatoes with leftover rice and beans was the most delicious thing in the world (tomatoes!), after rejoicing at the appearance of lettuce at the agro markets, I learned that my first week here was spent as a tourist passing through Cuba, not as a student living here. Even as a student, my life is significantly better than that of a Cuban. I live in a decent house with a bed and running lukewarm (sometimes hot) water, I always have breakfast and lunch provided, I have bastante dinero. $5 for a plate of food seems cheap, but for a Cuban who makes less than $40 a month, it’s quite a lot. Luckily, there’s a whole other economy for Cubans, one in which you can buy a large plate of food for 50 cents (it will be rice, beans, and pork, but its still food), where you pay next to nothing for healthcare and medicine, where you are guaranteed housing even if it means living with 3 generations under the same roof.

Our first meal out in Santiago, we ate at the top of a fancy hotel. I shared a plate of shrimp with a friend (I hadn’t eaten any type of meat but chicken and pork for two months) and we each had a salad and mango juice, for about $10 each. Even though I knew Harvard was paying for it, I was overwhelmed by an enormous sense of guilt. I could buy 20 pizzas (20 lunches!) for the same amount of money. I looked over at the next table where three foreigners (European-looking) were having lunch. On their table were three plates of lobster, one plate of shrimp, and two plates of tomatoes. I remembered from the menu that the lobster was $25. I felt a little sick. Lobster is prohibited in Cuba, it is illegal to have lobster, except in government approved places like the one we were at. Even if it weren’t, that meal for three cost more than two months salary of an economics professor (one of the higher paid jobs in Cuba). No, normal people in this country will stick to 1 peso (about 5 cents) fritura sandwiches (a piece of fried dough inside a bun) or 10 peso hot dogs for their daily calories.

Anyhow, the point of all this is that my trip to Santiago this weekend, funded by Mr. H, made me really disgusted at the Cuban double economy system, its separation of the country into a world of foreign privilege and internal resolviendo (making things work), and the pretty lie that it creates for tourists passing through the country. It also made me very frustrated in my own position here as a student, stuck uncomfortably in between these two worlds, trying at once to immerse myself in the real Cuba but being forced to straddle two types of snobbiness (because isn’t it snobby too to insist in subsidized prices when you have the funds to contribute to the other?) in my semi-residency.

I’m sorry this has all been very long and not too organized and coherent, I will now move onto Paris.

Paris—

My friend had been in Cuba for about 2 months, like me, and then went to Paris for two weeks. He got back last night. He could not stop talking about the delicious food. He has a tummy ache now from the tap water and street pan con croqueta. He said that the first thing he noticed about Paris was how everything, everyone, just screamed money, the chase for money and the objects that money can buy.

Compared to Paris, Cuba seems suddenly insanely poor, as in poverty. Of course, this is also Cuba as-is, not Cuba with all the novelty of discovery, that overshadows some things when you first arrive. Funnily enough, one doesn’t really notice it just living here. There isn’t very much variety in food, but we get our nutrients and calories. Our room might be small and a little worn down, but its totally livable. The sidewalks might have more cracks and holes than uncracks and unholes, but they’re walkable.

This is what I felt after talking to my Paris-vacation friend: I’m scared that when I leave this country, I will forget what it is like to be here. I am scared that I will forget that I don’t need thousands of different foods available readily, that I don’t need fancy clothes or flat sidewalks, hot water, shower heads, or functional doors, that I lived happily with much less consumption (but much more sunshine). I’m also scared that I will forget when I go to the super market and buy fish and beef and peppers and broccoli in my functional car with my credit card, that my consumption, comfort, and convenience is based heavily on the exploitation and suffering of people I can’t see. I am also scared to go back to a culture where people avoid looking at other people on the streets, and don’t dance! I know I have 6 weeks left in this country, but thinking about the outside world, so different, is making me miss it a lot already. Cuba, ya te extraño!

*Disclaimer 1: Most of the things I have written here are based on my experience in La Habana, the most capitalist and wealthy part of Cuba. The economic situation in the countryside is much worse.

It’s a bit of a special one, and we’re very excited about it.

We’re delighted to announce that we will have a VIP guest speaker in the form of Lloyd Davis, the original founder of the Social Media Café / Tuttle Club concept, and legendary man-about-the-social-media-scene in London. Lloyd will be delivering a talk on social media collaboration earlier in the day to students at UCF, and will stay on at Tremough to talk to the Cornwall Social Media Café in the evening. He’ll share with us the history of London’s Tuttle Club – on which CSMC is modelled – and give his expert view on where he sees social media heading in future.

I’ve attended a couple of events hosted by Lloyd in the past and I can personally vouch for the fact that he’s a very engaging, knowledgeable and inspiring speaker, as well as being generally a lovely person. Definitely worth making a trip to Tremough for!

Lloyd’s talk will be followed by informal networking, giving you the chance to catch up with other CSMC members and make new friends and contacts from Cornwall’s business, academic, media, not-for-profit and public sector communities.

If you’ve never attended a CSMC event before, this would be an excellent one to start with. You’ll get a great introduction to the Social Media Café concept from the founder himself, as well as getting to know other keen social media users from across the county.

CSMC events are free to attend, and new members are always very welcome. All we ask is that you register your attendance in advance so we have a rough idea of numbers on the night.

My good friend and I decided after we polished off a bottle of wine in Forest Park that some Mediterranean cuisine was in order for the evening. We picked Momos (630 North and South Rd) for a lovely evening enjoying each others company.  We were seated near the front of the restaurants, so we could see everyone who walked in and out.  The inside of Momos is decorated to entice all of the Greek and Mediterranean lovers who live in St. Louis.  The colors are bright blues and yellows, and the bar area is decorated with fun little nick knacks that represent Greece.  The restaurant feels like a small Greek haven, and is a getaway from the American feel of many other places.  My friend and I ordered- to start- the Humus spread that is served with pita chips and olives, as well as the stuffed grape leaves, vegetarian style that Momos calls Dolmades.  The Humus was a roasted red pepper with soft pita triangles.  It was a good sized tapas appetizer that we ate along side our Dolmades.  The stuffed grape leaves were a cold appetizer, and were drizzled with a herb based yogurt.  The Dolmades were stuffed with vegetables and a Greek style rice, that paired incredibly well with the Humus.  I had a Greek salad for my entree – and coincidentally enough, so did my friend.  The Greek salad was called the Elleniki salad, topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, and a Greek dressing.  The salad was a good sized salad, but not large enough to share if you are hungry.  I had the dressing put on the side of my salad, but it was fabulous, so I ended up saving a little to dunk the extra crispy pita bread that I got with my salad into the dressing. It was delish.  The salad also came with a pepperoncini that had a great spicy kick to it, that I enjoyed mixing with my salad dressing.  Momos was a perfect restaurant to hang out in, have a good proportioned meal in, and be taken away to a Mediterranean island, even though it was only for a few hours.  Be careful though, if you don’t have a reservation Momos fills up fast with locals who want to dine out in St. Louis and be taken into Greece and its flavorful cuisine.

Pachuca de Soto, Hgo.- Con motivo de la Reforma al Sistema de Justicia Penal que se instrumenta en el aparato judicial del estado y el país, el Centro Universitario Continental (CUC), en coordinación con la Sociedad Hidalguense de Litigación Oral, promueven el Primer Curso Introductorio al Sistema de Justicia Acusatorio Adversial (Juicios Orales).

El objetivo es que los profesionales del derecho de la entidad y los alumnos de la institución, conozcan los detalles y se mantengan actualizados en torno al nuevo sistema jurídico, tendiente a eficientizar la impartición de justicia en el ramo y el fortalecimiento del Estado de Derecho en estricto respeto a las garantías individuales de los agraviados y acusados que formen parte de algún proceso acusatorio adversial.

El curso que dará inicio el próximo 21 de septiembre en instalaciones del Centro Universitario Continental, contempla cinco módulos en los que especialistas en la materia tratarán diversos temas entre los que se encuentran, la Reforma Constitucional y los principios del sistema acusatorio, así como los mecanismos alternativos que lo conforman.

Igualmente se tratará lo referente a los sujetos procesales y la metodología de audiencia, así mismo los participantes conocerán de las etapas de investigación y todo lo referente al desarrollo de las audiencias en el Juicio Oral.

Los interesados en participar en el Curso Introductorio al Sistema de Justicia Acusatorio Adversial, podrán obtener información del mismo en el Centro Universitario Continental, así como en la Sociedad Hidalguense de Litigación Oral por medio del correo electrónico shlo09@hotmail.com, a través del cual conocerán detalles y requisitos para su inscripción.

De acuerdo con el modelo del proceso para la actualización del Plan de Desarrollo Institucional, dictado por el Consejo de Rectores de la Universidad de Guadalajara, los directivos de este Centro Universitario, trabajan en la revisión del documento rector del campus Puerto Vallarta, encabezados por el rector Javier Orozco Alvarado , quién comentó que ante los cambios que han experimentado la sociedad nacional y mundial, afectando además a las instituciones y sistemas sociales, la educación superior, no es la excepción, por lo cual se modificarán los principios de Visión, Misión y Objetivos.

El proceso de revisión del Plan de Desarrollo Institucional se lleva a cabo cada tres años, por ello se ha iniciado el proceso de actualización integral con la participación de la comunidad universitaria, esto, para conocer su sentir, explorar sus propuestas y así, alcanzar en un futuro,  la universidad que se desea.

Este modelo contempla el replanteamiento de la Visión 2010 hacia una gran Visión al año 2030, el cual estará acorde con la visión de México para éste mismo año, con el Plan Nacional y Estatal de Desarrollo.

Haber, para empezar dire que un diplomado es basicamente un curso que tecnicamete esta a un mayor nivel que licenciatura pero que esta mas bajo que maestria, se supone

Muchas de las personas que toman los diplomados del CUC o sea Centro Universitario de la Costa, dependencia de la UDG, en Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, son en su mayoria alumnos o egresados, que pues se inscriben porque es la modalidad mas facil de titulacion y tambien la mas cara.

Hablando de eso el precio es de 16 000 pesos al publico en general, y 8100 pesos a los alumnos o egresados, los cuales como ya dije son el 90% de los inscritos, y aun siendo alumno o egresado tienes que realizar un engorroso tramite para que te hagan ese dichoso “descuento”.

Tambien puedes pedir la condonacion del 75 o 100% del costo total pero esto solo lo logras si tienes buenas palancas en la universidad, si eres el recomendado de alguien, si eres el amigo de los de diplomados, si haces el servicio en ese departamento, etc. asi que de nada sirve que lleves todo el monton de papeles que te piden, comprobantes de ingresos, pagos, etc al final si no eres influyente no sirve de nada, es muy comun ver como a los que traen camionetas del año, les sale de gratis, entonces digo yo para que tanto papeleo?

Pero bueno sea cual sea el caso, suponiendo que pagues o no, se entiende que tienes derecho a un servicio de calidad, tienes expectativas de buenos materiales, y buenos profesores no? pues bien en algunas cosas se quedan cortos, que digo cortos pero muy cortos... para empezar las instalaciones, baños y demas estan muy limpios eso si a diferencia del resto de la universidad, pero bueno seria el colmo, tambien puedes tomar cafe y galletas que si te pones a pensar no son dadas, y te salen muy caras… te ponen en los mejores salones con aire acondicionado, cada semana te “dan” copias del material que veras, en fin todo bien, pero ahora viene lo bueno.

Los maestros que imparten las clases son, salvo en contadas excepciones, muy malos, nada eticos, y muchos de ellos presumen de tener años de experiencia, la verdad es que no se como nadie se ha quejado, o tal vez lo hayan hecho pero como siempre, hacen caso omiso. La mayoria de estos maestros divagan por horas en sus historias personales y metas alcanzadas, como si eso realmente interesara, los temas de los modulos jamas son vistos completamente, porque entre historias personales, motivacion, teologia y entre que repiten lo mismo una y otra vez se terminan sus modulos, en fin, no es mas que otro grupo mas, a los que no les interesa nada mas que titularse…

Aunque hay gente de hoteles que van a los diplomados, pero la verdad no se como se arreglen, me imagino que ha de ser por tenerlo en su curriculum que se yo, pero claro a ellos se los paga su empresa (obligados a firmar contrato por 2 años), por lo que la calidad tampoco les importa tanto con tal de tener un grado de estudio mas .

En fin si estas estudiando en el Centro Universitario de la Costa, y durante tu carrera no tuviste buen promedio, si quieres perder 8,100 pesos y lo unico que quieres es titularte facilmente pues toma un diplomado “ejecutivo” pero no tengas muchas expectativas…

Ahora que si lo que quieres es actualizarte, tener un grado de estudio mas alto pues te sugeriria otra cosa …. pero estos diplomados ni pensarlo, en mi humilde opinion solo estan diseñados y planeados para ser la modalidad facil de titulacion.

Es por eso y mas que los diplomados “ejecutivos” del cucosta estan lopior de vallarta…

Sigan pensando que la educación en Cuba es excelente, sigan pensando que la Cuba castrista es una potencia médica. Los estudiantes se quieren ir y las medicinas ni existen para calmar un simple catarro. La ideologización forzada compite con una juventud hastiada de tanta propaganda falsa y pide su futuro AHORA. Del blog Octavo cerco le traemos estos dos post que ejemplifican lo anterior.

¿Qué pasa (o no pasa) en la Universidad de La Habana?

Me comentó un profesor de la universidad de La Habana que han venido miembros del Ministerio de Educación y cuadros del partido a reunirse con ellos. Parece ser que la actitud “combativa” de los estudiantes deja mucho que desear.

El único ejemplo concreto son las becas ofrecidas por la Oficina de Intereses para ir a estudiar a Estados Unidos: “Aspirar a la beca denota, cuando menos, una inconsistencia ideológica inadmisible, todavía más grave en el caso de aquellos estudiantes seleccionados por la SINA que mantuvieron su decisión aún después de la argumentada discusión política que se sostuvo con ellos.”

La frase me transporta a un aula sin aire acondicionado en la Colina a la 1 de la tarde: unos “combatientes” de 60 años tratan de convencer a unos muchachos de 23 para que no viajen por un mes a Washington a estudiar historia porque eso es “malo”. Lo triste es que luego de no poder convencerlos, papá estado les negó la tarjeta blanca. Sin embargo esa no es la única razón concreta de que el partido incluya en su informe esta frase: “Es necesario estremecer al sistema de educación superior, persuadir y convencer sus cuadros, profesores, estudiantes y trabajadores del riesgo que corre la Revolución” (…); todavía se recuerda aquí en La Habana que la UJC no fue capaz de hacer que sus miembros le gritaran obscenidades a las Damas de Blanco en la escalinata durante su desfile, que en Santiago de Cuba la universidad estuvo tres días cerrada por un movimiento estudiantil auto titulado “Súmate y no te destaques”, y que Eliéser Avila, de la UCI, logró que Alarcón hiciese un “Discovery Channel” sobre la contaminación de los cielos.

El documento de trabajo discutido se titula “REORDENAMIENTO DEL TRABAJO POLÍTICO-IDEOLÓGICO EN LAS UNIVERSIDADES e incluye dentro las densas seis páginas que tiene una pequeña listica: Ideas claves para el trabajo educativo y político ideológico. Pensaba hacer un post sobre algunos de los tópicos del documento, pero es demasiado largo y poco específico (típico de los panfletos de PCC) por lo que he decido subirlo para que los interesados puedan leerlo aquí.

Un catarro cualquiera

Hace diez días empecé con coriza y tos. Fui a la farmacia para comprar algún expectorante, vitaminas y duralgina para prepararme para mi primer catarro del verano. No había nada. Como lo más importante es mantenerse hidratado, pues asumí con resignación curarme con agua. Al quinto día no iba muy bien así que volví al médico, me auscultó y me diagnosticó asma, como no había hecho fiebre ni tenía dolores musculares ni de cabeza, descartó el H1N1 y me mandó un aerosol.

Veinticuatro horas después seguía respirando mal así que fui a molestar a una amiga que es médico y que la pobre siempre termina cargando conmigo. Nada más ponerme el estetoscopio en la espalda me dijo:

- Claro que el aerosol no te hizo nada, lo que tienes no es asma, es reforzamiento en los pulmones…en dos días estarás con neumonía si no empiezas a tomar antibióticos.

Por suerte ya estoy bien, una donación entre los amigos dio un saldo de:

- 2 pomos de vitamina C.
- 1 pomo de vitaminas.
- Una tira de dipirona.

He podido darme de cara una vez más contra el sistema de salud cubano. Hablando con la gente me enteré, por ejemplo, de que un médico no está autorizado a recetar un medicamento que no haya en la farmacia. Por ejemplo, usted tiene catarro y en la farmacia no hay nada que comprar: ni expectorantes ni vitaminas. Entonces lo normal es que uno le pregunte al médico qué medicina podría comprar en la farmacia internacional o pedirle a algún familiar en el extranjero, pero el médico no está autorizado a dar esa respuesta.

En el caso que la medicina no sea posible conseguirla ni en CUC y no tenga familia en el extranjero, entonces se supone que usted tiene derecho a solicitar su medicamento a través de la ley 232, que dice que el estado se ocupará de comprarla y proporcionársela. Tengo dos amigos que han estado en esa situación, ninguno de los dos logró siquiera comenzar el papeleo, porque el doctor que los atendía consideró que el caso no era lo suficientemente importante como para presentárselo a la comisión farmacológica que lo discute y lo eleva luego al ministerio, donde se discute de nuevo y se aprueba. El primer caso tenía (falleció) una insuficiencia cardiaca crónica y el segundo tiene una degeneración de la vista por falta de una vitamina.
