Residential Architecture: L-House by Architects Collective: “..The deliberate and expressive building form establishes a dialogue with its surrounding landscape and feels light and airy. At the same time, the building achieved the very stringent local classification of an ultra-low-energy-house by using triple panel glassing. Additionally, the building’s orientation and its deep overhangs increased the comfort and lowered the energy costs for the inhabitants..Developing the form created a protected courtyard and the separate living and sleeping zones the family asked for. The generous glass areas create plenty of natural light and extend the living space visually into the garden and the hills behind it..” Extensive triple glazing, natural light, traditionally inspired L-form, sustainability..

Architecture: Spruce Art Center by LYCS Architecture: “..the design is a mixture of two fundamental challenges in architecture: to evoke new spatial meaning while reconciling an existing structure, and to produce a formal language that can be dynamic and strong, yet carefully caress spruce trees..[the] design creates three different internal courtyards hinged together, embracing within the spruce woods: a tranquil courtyard on the northeast part of the site secludes itself from the rest and blocks the often-busy views from outside and provides people with a moment to meditate with solitude, to appreciate the spruce in reflection and to [breathe]..The central courtyard functions as an interior circulation space, connecting both the open and closed courtyard by dissuading movement and view. The roof is an evolution of the Chinese traditional tile pitched roof: the four vertexes of the roof curve up at minor degrees and consequently descend the roofing gently towards the midpoint while a mirrored action is duplicated towards the roofing center surprisingly at the end. This transformation holds the drainage advantage originated from the pitched roof, in addition to echoing a reminiscent sentiment [with respect to] the buildings nearby..” Contextual, cultural, historical sensibility, proximity to nature, natural light and views, interior courtyards and indoor/outdoor sensibility..

Architecture: Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center by Weiss/Manfredi Opens to the Public: “..Embedded into an existing hillside at the Garden’s northeast corner, the sinuous glass building appears as a seamless extension to the existing topography as it leads into the 52-acre garden. In addition, the $28-million Visitor Center incorporates numerous environmentally sustainable features—most notably a 10,000-square-foot living roof—that are aimed toward earning LEED Gold certification. The project has been recognized by the New York City Public Design Commission with an Award for Excellence in Design..The curved glass walls of the Visitor Center offer veiled views into the Garden, their fritted glass filtering light and deterring bird strikes. In contrast to the southern face of the building, the north side is built into a preexisting berm, which increases thermal efficiency. Its clerestory glazing—along with the fritted glass on the south walls— minimizes heat gain and maximizes natural illumination. A geoexchange system heats and cools the interior spaces, and a series of rain gardens collect and filter runoff to improve storm-water management..The leaf-shaped living roof hosts over 40,000 plants—grasses, spring bulbs, and perennial wildflowers—adding a new experimental landscape to the Garden’s collection..” Sustainability, contextual and social sensibility, green roof..

Architecture: Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre by Charles Wright Architects: “..Camouflaged in an Australian rainforest located in Far North Queensland, this unique gateway into the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre is the recipient of the 2012 Eddie Oribin Award for Building of the Year presented by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA)..a mirrored facade that literally reflects the surrounding gardens..The camouflaged gateway houses a café terrace, information and exhibition space, and offices for the council staff. It activates the pedestrian promenade and links the gardens with the Arts Centre, while serving as a cool and dry zone all year round for tourists visiting the often hot and wet environment of the tropical gardens..” Award-winning, social and contextual sensibility, sharp, contemporary yet unintrusive..

Architecture: Harvest Pavilion by Vector Architects: “..located amidst an eco-farm..the first completed structure within a four building complex which will include a clubhouse, botanical showroom and information center dedicated to agricultural activity. responding to the vast tracts of land encompassing the site, a horizontal roof with deep eaves parallels the flat landscape. cantilevering from all four sides, the thin plane is formed from prefabricated aluminum rods creating a simple and light enclosure. the sheltering canopy generates an outdoor transition area to the interior..a floor-to-ceiling facade system of vertical bamboo louvers frames window panes and pivoting glass doors. the internal room becomes filters into the fields when the doors are opened..” Almost calligraphic, and certainly graphic, the Harvest Pavilion is strikingly fabricated and contemporary, and yet, with its transparency, seemingly inexistant; the bamboo louvres adding an essential practicality and vegetality..

In New York City that would add up to an almost inconceivable 32,000 murders a year..” Excellent, detailed, informative article by Michael Kimmelman in The New York Times, looking at some of the architectural and social interventions in Medellin..

Residential Architecture: Gallery House by Ogrydziak/Prillinger Architects: “..This project proposes a new domestic typology: a ‘gallery house’. It combines a semi-public art gallery and a residence for two prominent collectors who have redefined what it means to live with and look after art. The clients, a virologist and a mathematician, exclusively collect work by female contemporary artists and feel compelled to share and promote their collection, not only with friends but also with the larger art world. They requested a home within which both their extensive collection and visitors could circulate from a semi-public gallery through to the domestic space, each zone offering a different environment for experiencing the work. The street-level gallery hosts exhibitions curated from their private collection as well as the collections of friends. A site for artist and curator talks, the gallery increases public engagement in the arts within the art world as well as at the scale of their own neighborhood. Extending and redefining the exhibition space as it continues up the stairs to the next two floors and the penthouse sculpture garden, the domestic zone includes even the most private spaces in the exhibition circuit by virtue of its open plan..” Interesting geometrical facade screen, green roof terrace with sculpture garden, abundant glazing and lightwells, variable geometry residential spaces, views..

In section the roof is a series of continuous ridges and valleys that constantly vary in height and width from one gable to the other with no two lines of rafters being geometrically the same. Generally the cross section is a pitched portal frame with a multi pitched rafter spanning between the portal and a perimeter column. There are also curved transition areas where the roof changes direction in plan..” Exciting, distinctive form, successful social integration..Congratulations!

And these blocks are by no means parallelepiped, either: one of them sports the corners that are perceivable “pulled to the sides”, while the layouts of the others look like a Cyrillic «?»..The top block, according to the architects’ plan, will be faced with mirror glass, which will visually conceal the height of the museum building and will hide its excessive elongation, while the facades of the four lower blocks will be finished with decoratively wrought concrete panels of light-sand color. Some of these panels while still being molded will be covered with vertical grooves, very much like “flutes” that have migrated over to the concrete surface from the pieces of architectural graphics..” Distinctive staggered form, textural surface, mirrored glass top element..

Architecture: Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei: “..The Serpentine Gallery in London has unveiled plans by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei for this summer’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion: they’ll conduct an archaeological dig to find traces of past pavilions on the site then line the resulting trenches with cork..The plan involves excavating down to groundwater level, revealing buried traces of the past eleven annual pavilions and creating a well at the bottom that will also collect rainwater..A pool of water will also cover the surface of the circular roof, supported just 1.4 metres above the ground by twelve columns that represent pavilions past and present. It will be possible to drain this water down into the well to create an elevated viewing platform or dance floor..” Another marvelous Serpentine Pavilion..

Architecture: Fifth Studio by T3arc: “Fifth Studio is a low budget building to house a workshop for different artists and different disciplines..We tried to use only recycled materials from industrial waste and the proper excavation rocks. The main gallery connects to all the ateliers in a second level, allowing the artist to share their work in a direct way. Both the ateliers and the gallery have windows open to the light from the north..” Contextuality, sustainability, terraces, views..

Architecture: Architect Rem Koolhaas (OMA) in The Simpsons: “..In The Simpsons last episode, Rem Koolhaas made a brief appearance where he is shown teaching to a group of students.

As Metropolitan Monk noted in Archinect.com, to appear in The Simpsons episode is the most unchallengeable proof that you have achieved Starchitect status.

The Scene, described by Archinect.com: “Rem Koolhaas is working – on a cruise ship notabene – as an instructor – probably in iconographic buildings – in KIDZONE ELITE. The ship, just like CCTV, is an emblem of closure. The architect is holding a couple of lego-bricks in his left hand while seeming to fix something to the back of the tower”.

With the excitement of seeing Koolhaas on television, which architect would you like to see on a future episode?” The price of fame? Or its value?
