Eigentlich gab es ja jedes Jahr mindestens einen Gig in der Kantine in Augsburg. Mir ist gerade aufgefallen, dass ich aber in der Neuen Kantine noch nicht gespielt habe. Das ändert sich am Freitag, wenn Kollege Krimeforce UK (aka Asam the teacher) einläd oben im Schwimmbad seinen Geburtstag zu zelebrieren. Neben dem Geburtstagskind gibt es Unterstützung von Benchmark und meiner Wenigkeit. Musikalisch wirds wohl irgendwo zwischen WE LOVE BASS, Triple Trouble, WTF!?? und FORZAelectroniCA liegen. Ich bin gespannt…
Werde mich also am Freitag zum zweiten Mal diesen Monat in den Zug setzen und nach Augsburg fahren und wohl im Gegensatz zur letzten WE LOVE BASS auch mehr/länger und zu besseren Zeiten auflegen.

Cumbia Psicodélica @ D’Antigua featuring Sonido Martines, M.A.K.U. Soundsystem, and DJ/Rupture.

Wow. The past few days I was thinking of posting some cumbia and other songs that have been on my mind, and Alexis – your last video, Los Angeles Azules, was a perfect segue into what I want to post.

This is a dedication to Junkadelic, where I worked my last 3 months in Tokyo in ‘09. As anyone who lives in Tokyo can attest, Junkadelic is the best spot for Mexican, for tequila, for margaritas, and – I was surprised – for random cumbia listening.

Visit their website here (it’s good) and visit them when in Tokyo. The guys who run it are awesome, and make frequent trips to Mexico for surfing, tequila (they bring back a ton in their suitcases and have one of Tokyo’s best selections), and – apparently – random cumbia and other Mexican and Latin mix CDs.

Some of these songs are ridiculously good. These are the songs we used to work to. Imagine my shock, after almost 4 years of living in Japan, to all of a sudden be working to this soundtrack.

This post is dedicated to Junkadelic, and most of the songs I am posting below are from Junkadelic’s CD collection. So ありまさん and あべさん and everyone, this is for you!

MAS CUMBIA!

• Lily was kind enough to point out the excellent site, Cumbia Poder, which not only has great blog posts of classic cumbia, bu sweet embedded playlist for mellowing out to on a cloudy november afternoon.

• I just noticed that one of my favorite podcasts, Beats in Space, had a special cumbia podcast in September with JD Twitch, one half of the group Optimo from Glasgow.  I’ve been really enjoying classic cumbia crossovers this week — the ska(?!) song in DJ Quantic’s mix, Juancho Vargas’ cover of “Aquarelo do Brasil” on the Cumbia Poder playlist — the best selection on this podcast, in my opinion, is “Shacalao,” Lizandro Mes y Su Conjunto’s version of Fela Kuti’s “Shakara.”  The second half of the mix is mostly familiar nueva cumbia tracks, but it brings me to…

• Juan Data’s recent post to The Hard Data cataloging nueva cumbia artists/diggers/producers into catagories with snarky titles such as: hipster, foreigner, thirdworldist, etc.  Positivity kinda gets discarded in his dark worldview of cumbia in the digital age. Nonetheless, I think that he’s near the mark in some of his nerdy critiques… No one likes a trendster who repackages/commodifies good music displacing it from its origin or a pseudo-figurehead who rewrites a genres history to make themselves look more cool.  Politics! Not the note I wanted to end this post on.

A little while back, I wrote about DJ Darwin’s secret cumbia obsession. You might only think of Darwin as the shoeless maniac that DJs for Mad Rad, or the clubwise party fiend that throws late night gigs at the Egg Room with DJ Tiger Beat. He’s all those things and a hell of a lot more, sure, but he’s also a purveyor of the global urban beat. He’s deep into world electronic music, and for that reason, Darwin has a huge love for the mashed up cumbia sounds coming out of Argentina and South America right now. Cumbia isn’t just for Abuelitas anymore.  You can ask DJ/rupture about that shit. There is a new breed of global DJs that are breathing life into the genre and Darwin is slowly joining that list. Of course, you’ll hear less charangos in his cumbia tracks and more synths, less flute and more effects, but he’s trying. In fact, it can (and probably should be) argued if the tracks he’s making at home are even cumbia at all.  Either way, he just put out a new online mixtape last night called Cumbia Mix Fall 2009– and since this blog is all about highlighting last night’s mixtapes, you should check it out below. Aside from two cuts that Darwin produced himself, there are tracks from B.A.’s El Remolon, the Mendoza-based Fauna DJs, Lulacruza, and a little bit of Tego Calderon thrown in just for that good ole, “wait a minute, was that…?”  Yes it was. Check it.

Guacharachaween Wedding

Halloween is pretty much my favorite day of the year. Over the years, I’ve spent way too many hours and way too much money on wonderful homemade costumes. But this year, for the first time ever, I didn’t dress up. (Even when Hurricane Michelle canceled our Halloween party in Havana, I wore my fairy wings made from stolen hangers–yes I stole hangers in Cuba! I needed a costume!) Now, this was by no means a sign of a newfound maturity nor (god forbid) lessening enthusiasm for my favorite holiday.  Rather, two friends were getting married and their wedding happened to be on October 31st.

I was a bit bummed about the scheduling conflict, but knew that it was going to be a blast. Besides, I love weddings almost as much as I love Halloween, and I did get dressed up, just fancy-style, not costume-style. I was expecting the usual open bar fun, requisite electric slide and Hava Nagila (plus some Pollera Colorá and cumbia since they’re Colombian), and new friends in tuxes. But this wedding had the. best. music. ever. Two live bands (one of them was Brooklyn-based La Cumbiamba eNeYé) plus several (ridiculous!) DJ sets by Quantic, a Cali (Colombia, not CA)-based British DJ, who I kept missing every time he came to NY. Carlos, who was also at the wedding, just sent me Quantic’s Caja y Guacharacha Mix, and I thought I’d share it with the club.

While I’m definitely a big fan of all the nu-cumbia stuff, Quantic is a bit of a purist, and the rawness of this mix (“a foray into Colombian music of the Atlantic coast”) is refreshing, and all the accordion is awesome!

Quantic’s wedding set was a bit more upbeat, but very much along the same vein (though he did throw in some Miami Sound Machine for the older folks). Needless to say, I danced my ass off and completely forgot about the Courtney Love costume I had stashed at coat check, just in case.

Also: a “trailer” for Quantic y Su Combo Bárbaro, his project with a full band (this music is a bit too chill/smooth for my liking, but the visuals are gorgeous):

It’s hard to imagine a sexier album – or a smarter one - released this year. Over the course of fifteen first-class tracks – there’s not a single substandard song on this cd – Rupa & the April Fishes come off like a better-traveled Eleni Mandell backed by an acoustic Gogol Bordello. Alternating between wild gypsy dances, ska, noir cabaret, Mexican border ballads, Colombian folk, tango, klezmer and reggae, this is without question the most triumphantly multistylistic tour de force of 2009.

Frontwoman/guitarist/physician Rupa Marya is a Franco-American globetrotter of Indian ancestry. Whether singing in English, French or Spanish, her lyrics are as evocative as they are provocative (the album is a tribute to and defense of immigrants risking their lives around the world). Her breathy vocals are equally nuanced, as capable of conjuring a sultry late-night ambience as much as nonplussed outrage, backed by an acoustic rhythm section along with cello, trumpet, and accordion as well as horns and flute on several tracks. They stay in moody minor keys until the next-to-last track, a surprisingly breezy number combining a Mexican folk feel with reggae, a lament that could be told from an immigrant’s viewpoint…or just a woman missing a lover.

Before that, there’s a brief, haunting violin theme; a swinging noir tango with an incisive trumpet solo at the end; a playful, fun gypsy dance that goes out on a boomy bass solo; a dark, violin-driven reggae number; a gypsy-inflected, slinky ska tune; a defiant gypsy waltz with echoes of New York vintage latin revivalists las Rubias del Norte; a sad, mariachiesque trumpet tune; a dark Mexican shuffle; a scary, Middle-Eastern-inflected gypsy dance that builds from a stately hora-style intro; a jaunty, bluesy ragtime song with a big dixieland raveup at the end; and a bouncy cumbia featuring a characteristically intense rap interlude by the greatest English-language lyricist of our time, Boots Riley of Oakland hip-hop legends the Coup (who has an intriguing new collaboration with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Street Sweeper Social Club).

Part of this album is a great dance mix; what’s not danceable makes great makeout music. Socially aware, sometimes surreal and invariably inspired, this is one of the best albums of the year, yet another reason why we’re not going to finalize our Best Albums of 2009 list until the end of December. Rupa & the April Fishes play the Bell House along with another excellent, multistylistic, danceable band, Nation Beat on November 13 at 8 PM.
