You know the drill. Cursive will be playing Cine El Rey in McAllen next Sunday November 29th and I am extremely excited. I believe that the past is what makes us who we are in the present so I’ve decided to post one track from their back catalog each day leading up to the show.

Today’s track comes from an album that I’ve only recently come to appreciate, Happy Hollow. Now, know that I didn’t avoid it in any way, I just spent more time listening to Domestica is all.

The album takes the listener to one of the many worlds inhabited by Tim Kasher’s lyrics; a small town to be exact. A town that seems to be near a small colony of brass instruments that make their presence known immediately and remain to be an integral part of this album’s songwriting.

On the album’s first single, “Dorothy at Forty”, these creatures seem to represent the oppressive nature of the town’s inhabitants as they try and pull this ‘Dorothy’ character back to reality. At least, that’s what I get out of it.

…well, I love it mostly, but sometimes I hate it.

I was reading through my Twitter timeline a few minutes ago and I saw that a good friend of mine, @MeXiCaNnOnSp tweeted “Wrote in cursive today for the first time in years. It’s like riding a bike, but falling multiple times.” That tweet made my heart die a little bit.

Okay, a lot.

Sex, Lies and Handwriting: A Top Expert Reveals the Secrets Hidden in Your Handwriting by Michelle Dresbold

The older I get, the more intrigued I become with handwriting (Please check out this book; it’s one of my favorites). Consequently, my love for cursive handwriting grows just the same. Conversely, cursive – as we know it – is becoming an endangered art form.

According to Wikipedia (side note: Take it as you will. I just happen to find Wikipedia to be very helpful. Thus, I would like to believe it is 100% factual 100% of the time), “Cursive is any style of handwriting that is designed for writing notes and letters quickly by hand.” And there you have it; as much as I love technology, I simultaneously resent it because not only is it killing efficient spelling and grammar as we know it, but it is single-handedly eliminating the usage of one of the earliest and simplest means for art: cursive handwriting.

Today, still recovering from the many things I ate over my two great Thanksgiving meals, I have decided to include a song that the band contributed to a Smiths tribute album.

It seems incredibly fitting that the band would cover, of all Smiths songs, “Frankly Mr. Shankly”. A statement about one’s desire for fame and hearty disdain for a dead-end job that is ‘holding them back’. I can most definitely relate. Have a listen below:
Now, everybody knows this song. It’s the first single off of the album and it’s the tagline on the flyer for crying out loud. Here is “Art Is Hard”.

Today’s track comes from the split EP the band released with Japanese punk band Eastern Youth. The release has one of the coolest names ever to don an EP, 8 Teeth To Eat You. (fyi: there are 8 songs on the EP.)

This track is called “May Flowers” and brings Cursive’s contribution to this EP to a close. Now, don’t be fooled by it’s soft, serene intro, this tooth will most definitely eat you.
Today’s track comes from the band’s first EP featuring then newly-added cellist, Gretta Cohn.(pictured above)

Off of Burst and Bloom, here is “Sink To The Beat”. The interesting thing about this track that trails on over to their next full-length, The Ugly Organ, is the acknowledgement of the song-writing process. At the time, this was the latest from Saddle Creek.

You know the drill. Cursive will be playing Cine El Rey in McAllen next Sunday November 29th and I am extremely excited. I believe that the past is what makes us who we are in the present so I’ve decided to post one track from their back catalog each day leading up to the show.

Today’s track comes from my personal favorite album of the band, Domestica, which tells tales of deceit and sorrow fueled by a deteriorating relationship resulting in a divorce.

The band had just reformed with newly-added guitarist Ted Stevens. (Note: not this Ted Stevens)
Here is “The Martyr”.

Most handwriting programs start with patterns, then teach similar letter shapes, then words with those letters and so on, but because we do copywork and narrations my children want to all their written work in cursive, I find these programs progress through the letters too slowly.

I introduce them to the alphabet chart, and teach the letters in the following order:

(you can download these letter groups here: Cursive step-by-step )

Lower case letters ~

Find and copy over all round oval body letters ~ c, then a, d, g, and q

Find and copy over all the loop letters~ l, b, h, f and k

Find and copy over top curve letters ~ n, m, p and r

Find and copy over bottom curve letters ~ u, v, w and y

Find and copy over dot and cross letters (only letters to lift pen to complete!) ~ i, j and t

Find and copy over e, s, x and z

Find and copy over bottom loop letters ~ g, j, y and z

Upper case letters ~

Find and copy over oval letters ~ O, Q, A and X

Find and copy over loop letters ~ C, G, L, S, E and Z

Find and copy over curving over letters ~ N, M, U, V, W and Y

Find and copy over straight shape letters ~ H, K, P, R, D and B

Find and copy over start @ top letters ~ T, F

Find and copy over loop from middle letters ~ I and J

This method helps children ~

familiarize themselves with the entire alphabet

recognize letters and find them randomly

learn to form letter shapes correctly

practice short, happy lessons as Charlotte Mason suggests

run through the alphabet in sequence (when mom is sure they know how to form each letter)

Some more tips ~

talk as you show the child how to form the letters

watch closely and wipe any mistakes out immediately and correct the writing before bad habits or confusion is set

First trace over, then copy, then refer to chart until they can write without references

Today’s track comes from their 2nd full-length album, The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song. Now, the interesting thing about this album is that it is the band’s only posthumous release. The band broke up in 1998 after a couple of tours supporting their debut album, Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes and put this out a few months after the split.
Today’s track comes from the first release they ever had, The Disruption EP. Unlike the rest of their work, this album was released on Crank! Records and not Saddle Creek Records.

13:00 hours. Baghdis province, Afghanistan. The body of a soldier, submerged in a river in Western A

13:00 hours. Baghdis province, Afghanistan. The body of a soldier, submerged in a river in Western Afghanistan, is found. There is another missing. Both are from the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division. Eight Afghans, including four soldiers, three policemen and an interpreter are killed in either the NATO air-strike or in the fighting that broke out between Afghan and American troops. It lasted for hours.

He puts the paper down. Folds it neatly on his thigh and looks out the window to the cleanly cut grass, the well-managed trees lining the sidewalks, the women pushing strollers down the promenade. Hears the wind rushing through the trees, civilians carousing the bodegas of deep Brooklyn, the laughter of the children as they wait for the bus to pick them up or walk hand-in-hand with their mothers or fathers to the doorsteps of the school. The civilian cars, the airplanes, and the helicopters all carry on as normal.

“These are passing stories,” he thinks, “whims and fancies of newspapers and radio talk shows, 24-hour streaming news channels or regularly updated websites. But pause. Take it in. Allow the story to mean more than ‘bad-news’ or ‘distant suffering’.”

He looks out the window again. Sees the sidewalks have been blown apart, chunks of steel cables lay strew across the ripped up grass. The trees are on fire or already singed, the school buses lay flat on their sides and there are children inside. They are crying. He sees the school down the street has been blown apart, the chalkboards dangle from particle board fibers over the cavernous sides of the decimated building, ruled cursive paper flutters in the smoky winds, pieces of the American flags get caught in embers of mangled civilian cars. He smells the burning of rubber, the smell of a gas that he can’t place. There is silence save for the distant cries and crackling fires of exploded cars, loose electrical wires, and burning buildings.

He knows it’s not like this. It’s worse. There are more smells, more gruesome sights, the kinds of things that keep you up at night, wake you in the morning, grace you with their darkened presence throughout the day. They are the kind of things that can’t be forgotten because they are marked into your skin, wedged in your memory. They are the kinds of things that remind you it’s not too far from the shores of America to Afghanistan and this is harrowing and best forgotten.

He stops. There is more to this, even more disturbing. He allows himself to stop thinking of these people as soldiers, as men and women, Americans or Afghans, imagines them as children playing in the streets of Kabul or Brooklyn. Maybe with kites, maybe with basketballs, children’s things, fun and carefree. But it’s the 1980’s and Afghanistan has another foreign power in its midst. The Russians, under the leadership of Leonid Brezhnev, remain until the late 1980’s when they leave under the direction of Gorbachev. The children in Kabul are immersed in war while in Brooklyn, there are children immersed in the class warfare of the Reagan-era but it’s different, less immediate in its death and destruction. Maybe for some it is not. There is funding of the Taliban rushing in from the U.S. to battle the Russians in the midst of the Cold War. Over 1 million Afghans are killed, 1.2 million disabled, 3 million maimed or wounded. What were their names, where did they come from, what were their stories?

He thinks long and hard on the missing American soldier, thinks about the man found in the river. What were their names, these men and women who gave their lives to protect America or Afghanistan? What was it that brought them to the doorsteps of the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Taliban? He looks out the window, the sidewalks are back in place, the schools back in order. The trees stand tall, full of the orange and yellow colors of Fall and he watches as a child plays with a soccer ball in the street below. “What war,” he wonders, “will this child fight?”

I looked on this morning as my friend’s 3-year-old typed her name on the computer. By herself.

I looked on this morning as my friend’s 3-year-old typed her name on the computer. By herself. No help. Typed her name. Amazing.

It makes me laugh a little on the inside realizing this is where our world is heading, where most people of my generation already type far better than they hand write. Heck, I sit in a meeting scribbling down notes and if people talk too quickly, my hand gets a cramp awfully quickly.

I distinctively remember, as I was learning cursive in third grade, my teacher repeatedly saying we HAD to perfect our cursive because in high school, and the real world, that was all that would be accepted. Ha. I got to high school and guess what? Our papers were typed or we failed. No teacher wanted to deal with messy cursive trying to read through pages and pages of boring essays. By the end of high school, we could type a paper in a fraction of the time it would have taken to hand write.

But wait, we certainly learned how to write our names with paper and pencil first. Just shows how quickly things change. Perhaps the next generation of children will type it first? Looks like the gap is quickly narrowing.

I traveled to Lafayette last Friday with the director of the community development commission, a CDC board member and a local business owner. I, being the youngest by several decades, enjoyed listening to them all talk. We got on the subject of technology and the director said he has never seen technology advance as fast as it is today. I must say I breathed a sigh of relief. I, a 24-year-old recent college graduate, feel as though I have a hard time keeping up and fear that if I ever fall behind, I’ll never catch back up again. But then I look at my dad, a 60-year-old wonderfully brilliant man. He has had a PDA and/or Palm Pilot for years. We were one of the first houses to have a DVD player in the area. He is constantly troubleshooting computer problems and fixing them on his own. He knows how to Skype, has Facebook, keeps up on the latest news from the Drudge Report and drank Starbucks long before it was a trend.

So here’s hoping, just like him, I am always on the up and up of technology.
