I get so confused.  I guess when I look in the mirror, even though I don’t see perfection, I see beauty.  I wonder if I would trade my curves for the chance to be thinner.  I am rounder, and I think that’s ok.  My thighs are round, my hips are round, my bottom is round (very very round), my tummy is round.  I think it’s important to look at myself, really look at all of me, and see the beauty.  The more beautiful I see myself, the less I look for someone else to tell me.  God has created in my an internal beauty that radiates from my being, but I can’t denounce the physical.  I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I won’t forget it.  His good work, my life.

British woman would rather see curvier models splashed across the covers of glossy magazines, a survey has revealed today.

The study carried out by Dove skin care brand found  that advertising campaigns  which use airbrushing techniques to portray “unattainable perfection” in woman is leading to a rise in depression and low self-esteem.

A lot of the time airbrushing techniques will be used in order to slim down the waistlines  of already skinny models.

However the figures released from the survey show that woman would feel more comfortable with the use of curvier models such as Beyoncé and Kelly Brooke.

A total of 96% of women questioned said they felt the models used in beauty advertising were not a true representation of women today.

And more than 40% said the adverts made them feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Today’s research shows a sharp increase in the number of female consumers who want to see “real women” used in beauty advertising – up from 74% in 2004 to 95% in 2009.

The findings also come after a controversial statement by supermodel Kate Moss who recently said “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”.Find out what else Kate Moss has been up to recently

Seventies Circuit Breaker

The stars aligned in the summer of 1979 and the end of the decade was punctuated by the appearance of a woman who changed my perspective on life.  It was the year that I first set eyes on Lynda Carter and her alter-ego Wonder Woman.  Her trademark pirouette and wide-stance metallic wrist clasp would create more sparks than those that appeared on TV.  She would short-circuit my mains every time I saw her swing her lasso.

When you google Beth Ditto, after the usual Wiki description, you get STYLE.com and “Beth Ditto for Evans”. Crazy enough, in that first page, you don’t get searches that refer to you towards THE GOSSIP. This woman has made so much headline by being her fashionable self and not being afraid to be different, that she became a style icon from day to night! Lead singer in THE GOSSIP and an Icon for women everywhere, Beth Ditto has taken the world by storm. Right when most fashion houses are being questioned about the size of their almost dissapearing models Ditto came around. This incredibly talented singer is one to look up to. Not only because of her singing but, her poise and confidence is one to envy.

It comes as no surprise that THE GOSSIP is one of my favorite bands on EARTH. Way before the “fashion blast” that came onto her, I was trying to learn each song from start to finish. Soulful melodies full of GLAM VIBES are definite way to go! And when they come from a woman with so much power to change the fashion industry’s vision about REAL women, you just HAVE to sit down and listen!

As far as Beth Ditto’s Collection for Evans… I can’t even get ONE piece because it is strictly for UK stores and not available online. But, with pieces like this I would ebay search endlessly till something came up! <3

*Little Blue Dress* So I have my Little Black Dress in the closet but I think the Blue one rocks! Its HAWTTERRR!

I have been on the search for something pretty in cobalt blue for a while now. Over the summer, I’ve seen lots of blue stuff in stores everywhere but nothing that really caught my eye until today at H&M, when I wanted to jump off the escalator at the first sight of this blue dress! Knowing the price was £20 made me even happier :D

1. On the left, all hail Parasite Hilton (how we people on LD loved calling her that, feels super childish now…I think!).I dunno what I have got against her (apart from the fact that she was involved in the disastrous relationship with my favorite Backstreeter). I have to be honest, I love the stuff she wears most of the time and that dress actually looks pretty alright on her skinny frame. That one is just not meant for a curvy person, IMO!

3. My favorite Hilary Duff! I can’t help having a girl crush on Hilary and I think she looks very girlish pretty in everything.

beyonce-14. Beyonce! My new dress is this blue but with a glazy satin finish.

Everytime I looked at blue stuff I always wondered if I would have to buy a matching pair of shoes or accessories but after buying my first bright blue anything and googling all these piccies, I realized that the color goes along with so many other colors and can be paired up with black, gold and silver!

Now to the pattern, it is a body con dress. It has the perfect neck and length to make me feel comfortable. On days like today, I’m really happy with my shape, I’m definitely not the skinny one, I have a tiny frame but I’ve got broad shoulders, I’ve got the Hilary Duff shape going on LMAO but knowing I can fit fine in a body con is a nice feeling :P

bodycon Finally, I found a dress that resembles mine, could’ve just taken a picture of my dress hanging/lying somewhere but I hate unflattering images. The only difference is, mine has exposed seam pattern. Anyway, so I’ve had body con dresses in my head for a while now. I think Cheryl Cole looks really fabulous in them. I found a pic of her wearing the same pattern.

I think the best bit about body con dresses is that they show your curves so definitely look awesome on the curvy peeps. Padded bras are a savior!

It used to be that I’d build quilts in my head when I couldn’t get to sleep.  These days, I’m building a corpse-bride dress out of old tee-shirts.  I’m pretty sure there is something wrong with me.  Nevertheless (and I haven’t started on it yet) I have this vision of the back of the dress with extra ruffles on the butt as a mock-bustle and…  well, I seem to fall asleep before I’ve got the graduated chunks of fabric all gathered.  And then the next question, does the smallest go at the bottom of the layers or the top?  I’m thinking the bottom, all of a sudden. 

Oh, to be paid so I could make funky clothes all day instead of working a real job.

In the style of Jerry Seinfeld’s “Whats the deal with….” kind of commentary, I want to know what the deal is with the “curvy” woman’s fashion options in Canada (even in a larger city like Toronto)

Yes, there are several specialty boutiques hidden here and there in the city, but if we’re looking strictly at major retailers, there ain’t much sister! Oh and of course you have to pay more for less (selection, that is). What’s the deal with that, indeed!?

How crazy is it that a pair of pants or a top in plus sizes would cost more than the same garment in a regular size? I have noticed this pricing phenomenon in stores with mixed size ranges (regular, petites, plus all in one store) – And I don’t buy the argument that it costs more for more material or it costs more because it’s specially designed for the larger figure. What about the same garment in petites? That garment isn’t any cheaper than the regular sized item (or any more expensive for that matter).

Typically, a garment in a store with mixed sizes will have one price for regular/petites and a separate, more expensive cost for plus (usually around $5-10 more). What the…?

Perhaps some would think me bitter because I just happen to fall into that “plus” category and have to pay “more for less”, but it feels like punishment to me. It’s not like I want to be a bigger girl (that’s a whole other Oprah show!), but it feels like the fashion industry is kicking me while I am down.

On top of the selection being smaller, it’s usually uglier too.  While, I will admit it has gotten much better over the past 10 years or so, I am still seeing an overabundance of horizontal stripes and tapered pants…. um, what?!

Who’s designing this crap? Don’t they hear what Clinton and Stacy have been preaching for years? Horizontal stripes and tapered pants create the illusion of width. Maybe the “designers” are sitting there in their offices snickering behind closed doors while they draw out the patterns for clothes to make the curvy girl look like a Mack truck.

I smell a conspiracy, do you?

dikke Lagerfeld 1009Chanel’s famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld struggled with his weight until 2001, The Huffington Post writes in the beginning of this year. You see him in a still fatter edition with one of his thin models. And you also see the face of the thin Lagerfeld, who is holding a coin or a medal and who is pouting his mouth like an old rich and lonely lady. I think the fatter Lagerfeld looks better, but that is a matter of taste.

Karl Lagerfeld is protesting against the decision of German women’s magazine Brigitte to stop using models in its photographs. It seems that Brigitte was a bit tired of giving these skinny girls a little fat through Photoshop.  In its Ohne Models (Without Models) initiative Brigitte announces that from January 2010 onwards it will only photograph normal women, because the world has changed and women have changed as well. Lagerfeld told Germany’s magazine Focus that nobody wants to see curvy women.

“Fat mothers with their bag of chips are sitting in front of television and say thin models are ugly”, he sneers. I wonder if for mr. Lagerfeld there is nothing between a fat mother and a thin model. He also tells Focus that the world of beautiful clothes is about dreams and illusion. Isn’t that exactly the problem? I think Brigitte took a very good decision, just like Dove, a few years ago, which photographed normal women to promote its soap, and was criticized as well.

I hope more magazines will follow Brigitte’s example and that in the end Karl Lagerfeld and his colleagues will feel obliged to contract models with at least a little bit more weight, and also curvy women, beautiful! Curvy is not necessarily fat, Karl.

Today I read about the model Filippa Hamilton. Clothing company Ralph Lauren fired her because she was too fat. Hamilton was shocked about a Photoshopped picture of her, where her hips seemed smaller than her head, as the New York Daily News said. “I was shocked to see that super skinny girl with my face”, she told the newspaper.

Newsflash….all women are not size zero !! How is it then that all the nicest clothes seem to be made for them? How often do you see fashion aimed at us fuller figured girls?
For ages now the fuller figured girl has been poorly treated in the fashion clothing world. Plus size women are no longer just housewives and mothers,they are now business leaders aswell. There are even plus sizes on the catwalk now.

It is as if the fashion industry is slowly starting to wake up to the fact that there is a lucrative market for the taking. We can look spectacular in the right clothes so give us the right clothes.
There are several stores and boutiques that now specialize in full size clothing. Not just knickers but sexy ones! These stores not only know but they celebrate that real women do have curves, and they also aim to make plus size women looking and feeling beautiful and keeping pace with the latest fashion trends.
Plus size women can still be active or even sporty. Plus size clothing, whilst long overdue, is quickly catching up with the fashion world. As the fashion houses prepare their next collections many are now designing with the larger girl in mind. At last we will be able to look good whatever the occasion.

Although being a “larger girl” myself (and happy!) I’m currently succeeding in losing a few pounds(nothing drastic,I just want to drop a dress size from where I am now),but dont worry I’ll never be a stick insect (lol) and if you want to see how I’m acheiving it then click here. bye for now.Sue xx

I have written before about how the supposed “hottest” women today do not live up to their billing.  Three that I analyzed in more detail were Karolina Kurkova, Gisele Bundchen, and Raquel Zimmerman.  In general these women, although attractive, were too thin and masculine to be considered the hottest of the hot.  I read this post by Aoefe which discussed how women with curves can be confused with overweight women unless they wear form fitting clothing.  I think this is a result of a number of factors which have the same effect Gresham’s law has with money.

There is an ideal human form which includes fat.  No one has a perfect body and variation generally occurs in one of two opposite directions:

  1. Too thin: this looks more like the typical adolescent male type and seems to be common among fashion models
  2. Too fat:  this is more common among the general population and involves excess fat gathering in undesired places

Ideally, the people would try to obtain the ideal form, but women tend to be drawn towards the first error.  Gresham’s law can explain this phenomenon.

Gresham’s law states that bad money drives good money out of circulation.  When the government starts debasing the currency, the old valuable currency is withdrawn from circulation and horded.  To illustrate, if you had a silver dollar would you use spend it to buy a bottle of pop?  No, you would use a paper dollar instead.  Austrian economists have pointed out that there is an important caveat to the law.  Bad money will only drive out good money when both of them are forced to be equal (i.e. legal tender laws).  Silver dollars are not circulated because the government forces them to be valued equally to a worthless paper dollar.

  • Aoefe talks about how words like curvy and voluptuous are now used to describe obese women as well as healthy women.  It is politically incorrect to call fat, “fat”, so healthy people and obese women are classified in one category while underweight women are classified in another.
  • The second is bulky clothing.  Since most Americans are really unhealthy, the default assumption is that someone is unattractive unless proven otherwise.  Aoefe is from Canada, so I assume this holds true there as well.  When a curvy woman wears loose clothing, the default assumption is that she is overweight.
  • Obesity is something that happens over time, you don’t just wake up with another 50 pounds stapled onto your stomach.  When dating someone, you must guess what they will look like 20 years down the line.  The natural assumption is that a little fat now is a lot of fat later.

I think these are the three main factors contributing the Gresham’s law of female body types. I have noticed these three factors before but I had not connected them.

In one of my classes a couple weeks ago, I just noticed a girl that had a knockout body.  Classes had already been going on for several weeks and I hadn’t noticed her before, so I was surprised.  Then I realized that she just had an extreme hourglass shape [to phrase it modestly], and that before she had worn looser clothing while this particular day she had worn a form fitting sweater.

This is the first of many wonderful, wonderful posts here at the Haute Spot. But first I imagine you have a few questions. Let’s start with what I imagine will be the most frequently asked questions.

What exactly is the Haute Spot?

Good question. The Haute Spot is a place for any kind of teenager (skinny, curvy, blond, brunette, female, male,  etc.)who loves clothes as much as we do. :) We love all types of people, so don’t be afraid to comment and send us emails at thehautespothauteline@gmail.com. Tell us about your tricks, tips, and even photos of your amazing outfits. Who knows? You could get featured. This is basically a mecca for any teenager who isn’t recieving their fashion fix and seeks it elsewhere, namely on the world wide web. It isn’t only a fashion blog, though- we’ll also talk about great music, movies, art, shows, or other cool things in general.

Who are you people, anyway?

We’re teenagers with a love for clothes. We do not have excessive amounts of money, we are your typical middle class American teenagers. And we all have unique senses of fashion and want all like minded people to have a place to go, even if only on the web, to read and talk about fashion. The only thing we love more than our own unique style is seeing other people’s unique styles. And the best part is that we live somewhere with four seasons, so you get the best of all seasonal fashion no matter what your climate.

I don’t normally go gaga over cellphones. I mean, they’re just phones after all.

That is until I got my new Nokia E71. Forget the fact that I’ve scratched it within 72 hours of receiving that box from the courier company (I love getting things at the office – makes me feel important).

I was trying to figure out what makes this phone so nice: it’s not the lightest around, it does whatever most cellphones do, and the buttons on the keypad might be a bit too small for my liking.

Today, I took it out and looked at it, finally realising what made it stand out for me.

It’s sleek, shiny and modern. Yes.
But it’s also curvy. I like things curvy. Curvy defines what I’m all about.

I applaud Mark Fast’s descisions to use full (read: average) figured models in a recent runway show a la that episode of Ugly Betty where they have a feel-good fashion show featuring the regular gals. I even appreciate the drama of two of his team quitting over the decision. If you look at the pictures at the bottom of the article with the slimmer models, they actually look less flattering in his designs which really seem at home hugging those curves.
