I got these shoes early November to do A Nightmare Before Christmas themed pair of shoes. I ended up getting swamped by school and had to put them off til Mid December and even double it up as a painting project for class. This was my first attempt at using acrylic to paint the shoes. It definitely has its advantages and disadvantages but I am definitely happy with them.

A couple of years ago I was allowed to glimpse the world of bespoke tailoring via Will who brought me along to photograph, for his own blog, some of his fittings. And though I grew up in that post-industrial bourgeois culture that, regardless of whatever advertising lipservice is paid, clearly disdains the singular in favor of the mass produced (hello, Walmart!), I was able to hurdle over my own upbringing and appreciate the years of training and perfecting that goes into every handcrafted article.

This past October I accompanied writer Jeffrey Ying (above) to meet the Messieurs Glasgow (below) from the firm of George Cleverley, bespoke shoemakers, or as the more erudite among us are now correcting me in their minds, cordwainers, visiting San Francisco from London, and encamped at the top of Nob Hill.

This particular trip was for Jeffery to interview the head craftsman, the senior Glasgow, and I won’t betray his article in this post (beyond a couple of snapshots). What I will remark on is Mr Ying’s encyclopedic knowledge of not only London shoemakers, including Cleverly, but of most their collective clients which seemed to start with the first Roman governor of Britain, Aulus Plautius, in 43 AD (Lobb). Even George senior was a bit awed by our young friend.

Eventually Mr Ying was persuaded to “walk” through the process of being measured for custom shoes.



As always, it was fascinating to be allowed inside for a few moments. It’s a world that I ordinarily find inaccessible, but not unlike Apelles long before me, I am occasionally granted access due to my image making abilities.

I’ve been monitoring my blog’s stats and I’ve noticed that when it’s in moments of drought (in terms of views) the post that brings in the most traffic is the Domincano post I made early this year. People seemed really interested in the design that I came up with for the Dominicano AF1s. Therefore I’ve decided to come up with a new design for a pair of low top dunks (unless people prefer the AF1 design) . I’ll be selling this pair of dunks on EBAY when they’re done. So I was at StyleMax this weekend and discovered the best thing in the world, next to cheez-its, Richard Dean Anderson, and chocolate covered bacon: custom shoes!

paintorthread.com posted on the custom shoe forums that they were gonna have a custom shoe contest. I thought “hey the Rafikis arent BAAAD so i guess i could submit them and see what happens.” I had no idea like customizers like Yoakustoms, Sharp20, and Jacob Patterson would be competing as well. Last summer I tried to get some macro photos while out on a canoe in the pond at Ensign Ranch, Cle Elum, Washington. Unfortunately I did not get what I really wanted since it is hard to get several enthusiastic children to ALL stop paddling the canoe at the same time just so mom can snap a photo. I still like this picure, I just was not as close to the dragonfly as I would have liked. I took quite a few pictures but did not end up with the macro I was after. It is much harder to find what you are aiming at in the viewfinder once you have the camera on macro mode and dragonflies don’t always hold still very long. They sure where pretty that day shimmering blue in the sunlight over the golden-green water.

This week I decided to create some product out of the pictures I took that day. Below are a stationery, postage stamp, and even a pair of Keds slip on shoes made using my photo, Dragonfly Over the Water. They are customizable and available for sale on zazzle.com .  Watch for more to come soon.

Havent posted anything in a while. The Rafiki Dunk Lows are back in progress. My white paint came in the mail so I’m back on track. This isnt the main point of my post though.

I’m rockin my PINK NBs TODAY!  …yeah I rarely ever wear these shoes. I dont rly have much to go with it so once every blue moon I’ll pull ‘em from under my bed and rock ‘em for a day. Pics below!

Ya Boi, SBTG has done it again. With an ill azz designed DUNK.. This Custom Dunk has a blue denim design, with zipper on the front and various stiching patterns and designs on the shoe. It has customs tags and a distress midsole. This unique shoe will be one awesome shoe to add to your colelction. The Relase date of this shoe is still yet to be known. Well the Rafiki Dunks are gonna be put on hold for a bit because of a blonde moment. I thought if I mixed neutral with bone it would lighten it up to the very slightly shaded white that is rafiki’s hair….it didnt. So now I have to order some white paint, but there’s a small problem…I’m broke. SO when I get sum money I’m gonna order some paint and I’ll be back in business.

In the mean while though, I made a lil video of me tricking after I mowed the lawn one morning. If you dont know what martial arts tricking is I suggest u youtube it…or just watch this video ^_^   CHECK ME OUT!!

Instead of constantly making post after post of the shoes in progress i decided to just update this 1 post till the shoes are done. So keep checking back every couple days. Pics will be up!

Edit 7/1/09: I made a quick $20 today! (i’m broke) yay ^_^ I did a shirt for DJ Glen today. The design wasnt too time consuming (especially since I dont have classes or work today) so 20$ would suffice. Here’s the pic

My cousin approached me with hopes to get a pair of vans done for his birthday. He is really into Kaws and wanted shoes with his art on it. I wasn’t really into the whole idea of cloning his artwork, but since he’s family I agreed to do it. So dont ask me to do a pair of someone else’s art, cause I won’t do it!

The inspiration for this design came from many different things. I was having a hard time coming up with an interesting colourway that hasnt really been done before. I was watching The Lion King on my friend’s Zune, and when i saw Rafiki in the opening scene I remembered how much I loved that character.  Then I realized his colour scheme was perfect for that cool/unique colour way I wanted. So I decided to do a Rafiki Custom dunk.
