Walking through Kloof Street, one will find stylishly exciting clothing stores, a selection of restaurants for each taste, coffee shops, and an array of students browsing and snacking from nearby City Varsity and Hiddingh Campus.

Amidst this bustling activity is Scar: “Good hair for bad people”. A colonial-style building contrasted with a slick modern interior. The hairdressers stand out with their creative cuts and wow colours – donning their hairstyles as a Scar uniform. However, this salon is not exclusive to the courageously striking, despite exhibiting Die Antwoord’s Ninja as their “poster-boy”.

“People are often too afraid to come here ’cause they think our style is too edgy, but we cater to a variety of people”, said one of their stylists. “Our clientele includes people of all ages and preferences.” Seated in Scar is: a middle-aged man requesting a “neat” cut, younger women with more foil in their hair than ten school lunches, a beaming customer exiting with a head of luminous red, highlights, edgy fringes, trims…the works.

Then there are those who are bored with their locks and have arrived for a stylist to “do his (or her) thing.” Scar attracts this type like a bright, flickering flame. The stylists are trusted, much like “appearance psychologists”. They make suggestions and work according to your general style, which they have a knack for understanding. They appreciate what will best complement you, are knowledgeable about their products and inform you about what is going into your hair and how you should take care of it. Most importantly, they are passionate and strive for your smile.

And they are very likely to succeed after you have had your massage at the wash-sink and drinks on offer. Despite being a “relaxed and fun experience”, professionalism is the word.

“Scar Giveth Hair and Scar Taketh Hair Away.” Amen.

The rate cut was unexpected. Positive retail sales from January to March suggested a cut may not be needed (in Q1 2013 retail sales rose 2.2%, compared to 2.6% for the entire year 2012).Yet cut they did.

One reason for the cut is the stubbornly strong Aussie dollar. Treasurer Wayne Swan notes that the high Aussie dollar is “putting pressure on all sectors of the economy”. Declining commodity prices should have weakened the dollar but the dollar has remained firm. Concerns over the mining bloom slowdown should have hurt the dollar, but it hasn’t.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you crazy, fearless, tireless, wise, loving, thoughtful, giving moms out there. Where would we all be without you?

This was a little design i did up for our mother’s day card to my wife. I cut it out of a card in-lay to show the paper behind it. On the front I drew out the cut-out below. It showed through to the back of the in-lay paper.

The families of all those who have died because of these policies might have a different point of view.

Apparently we are living in an excellent time for businesses to boost their profits – because labour is cheap.

That is what Lord Young, who advises David Cameron on enterprise, told the cabinet yesterday (May 11). His words make it crystal clear that working people who vote Conservative are classic examples of turkeys voting for Christmas. They beg to be exploited.

He said low wage levels in a recession made larger financial returns easier to achieve – in other words, he actually admitted that bosses could use the current state of the UK economy, as caused by his own government (not the previous Labour administration, for reasons we’ve covered in the past), to push workers’ wages down and keep more moolah for themselves.

Vox Political has accused the Conservatives of exactly this behaviour in the past, but we never expected to see a member of the government admit it so brazenly.

Perhaps this is more of the government’s pet ‘nudge’ theory at work. We have seen that benefit increases have been lowered in order to instil fear of destitution in the jobless, and in those who have low-paid jobs. Now, businesses are being urged to capitalise on this, exploiting their workforces with the obvious threat: “There are plenty of other people out there who’ll do it for less!”

Let’s just back this up with some statistics, courtesy of The Guardian , shall we? UK employees’ average hourly earnings have fallen by 8.5 per cent, in real terms, since 2009. That’s adjusting for inflation, and the newspaper got its figure from the Office for National Statistics.

Meanwhile, the 1,000 richest people in the UK are now worth more than £414 billion – up more than £155 billion in the three years to December 2012. And in April, the Tory-led government gave those people a £100,000 per year tax cut.

Lord Young is not to be confused with Sir George Young, the Tory Chief Whip who once famously said “the homeless are what you step over when you come out of the opera” – but he is cut from the same cloth.

He had to apologise after telling the Daily Telegraph that “for the vast majority of people in the country today, they have never had it so good, ever since this recession – this so-called recession – started”.

For this reason it is easy to suggest that he would have stepped over the body of Stephanie Bottrill, had he been the first to find it.

Oh – do you think that statement goes too far? Please, reserve your judgement until I have explained my reasoning.

Like so many members of the Tory government, this is a man who absolutely point-blank refuses to understand the relationship between the decisions he makes and the conditions in which the majority of us are forced to live.

This former advisor to the Prime Minister on health and safety laws has advocated relaxing them, ignoring the fact that this will increase the likelihood of work-related injury that makes it impossible for people who need the money to go to work.

This enterprise advisor was asked to conduct a “brutal” review of the relationship of government to small firms, presumably with a view to cutting off as much public assistance for small businesses as possible.

This former chairman of the Manpower Services Commission advised the late Baroness Thatcher on unemployment, and we may take it that it is due to this advice that joblessness skyrocketed during the Thatcher years.

He refuses to see that his attitude is causing the problem: By ensuring that Britain’s labour market remains “flexible” (read “low-wage”), he ensures that the national tax take remains far lower than it should be; low-paid workers form the overwhelming majority of the workforce. In turn, the low tax take means the government cannot pay off its debts and provides it with an excuse to cut public spending – especially on benefit payments.

Stephanie Bottrill had an auto-immune system deficiency, Myasthenia gravis, which meant she was permanently weak and needed constant medication. Doctors said she was too ill to hold a job, but she never qualified for disability benefits.

She committed suicide because she could not afford the cost of living after the Bedroom Tax was forced on her, and it has been said by others that she died for want of £20 per week.

It is the attitude of Tories like Lord Young that has deprived her of that money – and ultimately, of her life.

Ellie Goulding’s signature side cut. I just might get this done to my hair as well when my hair grows out longer, (as it is now in that awkward in-between-short-and-medium-length stage.) Do you like this edgy hair style? Would you ever attempt it yourself?? Comment down below, and have a nice day!

Shut it off.

The mind shouts,

It screeches and halts.

But when it comes to the mind,

Each hurtful word you have hurled has mind-fucked me.

I can’t erase it…

It comes back like a harsh sea-wave and hits me.

You try pushing it all in a corner of the mind,

But it opens up again and springs back in your face.

There are these trigger points…

One word and they gets activated.

Ushering a set of unpleasant memories,

Making everything dark and slimy…

I want to kill these thoughts,

Bury or burn them.

So they stop eroding my psyche,

Another great article By Dion Padan on 14th March 2013

________________________________________________________

“What Are We Doing For You Today?”
When you visit a hairdressers, do you dread the question: “What are we doing for you today?”. For some people, it can be one of the hardest questions in the world to answer accurately.

Not only can it feel quite intimidating when you are sat in the chair and your stylist is waiting expectantly, you’re also probably thinking “you’re the hairdresser, you tell me”. However, it is extremely important that you have a decent idea of what you really want, before you step foot in the salon.

Today’s article looks to help you pinpoint your next hairstyle.

Finding Inspiration
Let’s say you are bored with your current hairstyle – where do you find inspiration for a new one?

We only have to look around us to see the latest hair trends – glossy magazines, celebrities, sports stars and popular culture can be huge influences on what we personally desire from our own hair and clothes. Not only that, dedicated online resources (like FashionBeans’ very own hairstyles gallery) collate excellent examples of modern cuts, which you should consider saving to show your stylist.

I often find that customers feel awkward bringing pictures to a consultation but I personally find it an enormous help. What better way to show your stylist how you want your hair to look than to actually show them an image of the finished style?

Even if the image is not exactly how you want it or the model’s hair is not the same texture/density as yours, it’s great to have that image as a starting off point – you can then collaborate with your stylist in order to mould it to your individual specification and needs.

Before You Make The Leap
There are several influential factors that need to be seriously considered before you choose your new hairstyle:

Maintenance – How often will you need to get your hair cut to keep on top of the style?
Time – How much time are you willing to spend styling your hair?
Products/Budget – Are you willing to style your hair with hair products? Leading on from this, are you prepared to invest good money in purchasing the exact products you need to recreate the look at home to the same standard?
Equipment – Are you open to using a hairdryer or maybe straighteners to keep the style looking its best?
Personal Style – What kind of clothes do you wear and how would you describe your personal style? There is probably no point opting for an edgy, rockabilly-inspired slicked-back undercut if you like to dress timeless and refined at all times.
Job – Is your haircut smart/practical enough for work?
This may seem like quite a big list but work your way through it and figure out where you draw the line. Be realistic as it will be easier to make decisions and guide your stylist if you are honest about your answers.

Once you have considered all the factors above, you can then start to really think about how you want your hair to be styled. This can be quite hard, especially if you’re only used to having a simple short back and sides.

Bear in mind that you may need to grow your hair for a while in order to have enough length to get the desired shape, although this is no excuse to walk around with a mound of un-styled hair on your head. You will still need to go and see your stylist to get it tidied up, but you may leave it slightly longer between cuts in order to allow for more growth. This part requires patience, so don’t give up.

Pinpointing Your Ideal Hairstyle
It can be hard to come up with a vivid image of the type of hairstyle you would like, especially if you are considering the style as a whole. I always try to break the haircut down into sections, which makes it easier to get your head around:

Start With The Sides – Would you like to see your scalp or would you like some movement in the hair? Do you like it tidy or untidy over the ears?
The Back – Would you like it to be the same length as the sides or longer? Do you like the hair to be cut into the neck or left unkempt?
The Top – How will you wear it? Flat, unkempt or spiky?
The Front – Will you want it longer or shorter than the sides? Do you prefer the hair to be on or off your face? Alternatively, you could sweep the hair to the side.
Your Stylist
Of course, your stylist should always be there to help, guide and advise you on what will suit you and your face shape, as well as detailing what’s currently ‘in’.

I personally feel I have a great relationship with all of my clients and love trying new styles with them. One thing I have never been able to wrap my head around is if someone has been visiting the same stylist for an extended period of time and then opts for a new salon and a new stylist just because they wanted to try a ‘new look’.

I would like to think most stylists out there don’t just give the “same again” service – it is a huge part of our job to inspire clients, so give them a chance to help and make them aware during your consultation that you are considering a change.

On the flip side, if your current stylist is not willing to entertain the idea of a new hairstyle or proactively tries to put you off every single idea you come up with, it might be time to try a new one.

Men’s Hairstyle Inspiration
Hooka’s Most Requested Haircuts
For better or worse, the most requested hairstyles we get asked to recreate in the Hooka salons are: TOWIE men, One Direction, David Beckham and Gary Barlow. Some recent examples can be found below:

Final Word
Many clients come to the salon for the first time and find it hard to decide what style they would like. Those that don’t have any idea of what they want are generally the clients that you don’t see coming back – but this is down to the individual not having a clear idea of what they want and expecting the stylist to be a mind reader.

This is why I personally feel that it’s so important to consider exactly what you are trying to achieve BEFORE going to the salon. It’s imperative that you come away proud of how your hair looks and know that it reflects your personality and personal style perfectly.

I also find that doing an initial consultation with a new client can sometimes make them feel uncomfortable. But as a stylist I need to find out a lot about them – lifestyle, time constraints, budget and even their personal style – in order for them to walk out feeling confident. Just be honest and practical with your answers and you can’t go wrong, nobody is judging your responses.

Hopefully this article has opened your eyes to possibilities and options available to you when you fancy a change of style. Although some guys know exactly what they want, others need a lot of guidance to reach their desired look. The most important piece of advice I can give you is: remember that even if you don’t know exactly what you want, you ALWAYS know what you don’t want.

Be clear with your stylist and make sure the next time you walk out the salon your cut presents you and your personality in its best possible light.

Hey, what’s wrong?
Do you not like it – the world outside?
Come on, see, sniff,
For Hinamizawa is after all a beauty.

About trying to kill you, I plea for a pardon.
For apparently I can’t. Not now, not ever.
Come out and play, don’t try to crawl back -
Back into my wrists, it hurts so much.

Adorable, writhing,
Yet an epitome of fear.
Who, what are you – and where is your home?
For it certainly is not in my blood.
Squirming, gasping – but is it not sunny out here?
My razor, it rusts; My blade – it fails,
And a door for you I’ve made.
I’ll cease to claw, I’ll start to smile,
I want to take you home.

Heavy weight impossible to just lift, always falls

About to break, about to touch, when it swings away.

Heart like stone, rocking, touching the walls

Briefly before coming back to the darkness.

I could almost touch, break the window, spring

Into the sky, fly as high as Icarus and hope not

To melt, to plummet, to fall, but the taught string

Will not let me rise, only pulls back down again.

Trapped in eternal motion, doomed to move restless

Never steady, but this pendulum hangs hidden

Internal confusion, never coming to quiet stillness

Not aloud to lie down forever, just to swing

Again.
