Last night, my family sat and watched the movie, “Indian in the Cupboard”. As my small family was engrossed in the movie, I sat reading a book. (I was rather occupied with “Eclipse” in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer). The reading was put on hold as I remember thinking to myself about the first time I had heard the book, “Indian in the Cupboard” written by Lynne Reid Banks. I was in Elementary School and my teacher was reading it out loud to the class. At the time I was mesmerized by the thought that there could be a cupboard that would bring inanimate objects to life. I remember going home one day and trying out the bathroom cupboard. By the time the book was made to movie, I was a teenager; the movies had to have romance so I had never seen the movie. I could see that my daughters were truly intrigued by this movie. I pondered purchasing the book and letting them use their imaginations on it. After today, I question no longer.

Around our house we mainly have “girl” toys. I babysit a boy 2 times a week and after a couple days of hearing him moan and groan that he was tired of girl toys, I started to acquire some action figures for him. I don’t stop the girls from playing with these toys, I just hadn’t seen the figurines played with unless he was there. As we were loading into the car for a play date, my 3 year old was clenching something in her hand. She was trying to be delicate with it while at the same time making sure it would not go anywhere. I walked around the car to open her door, I saw her open her little fingers and I could see what was clasped in her tiny little digits and palm. It was one of those small figures, specifically, an Indian. I looked at it and thought, “Oh great another toy that will be left in the car”.

As I drew closer to her, her eyes were intent upon her hand and I heard her tiny voice enunciating her thoughts out loud, “If only I had a cupboard.”

I no longer cared about the toy in my car. Even now as I think about her holding that Indian in her hand, my heart warms. Her tender little heart held such conviction in that she too could have a small friend, if only she had a cupboard. I watch as she was so gentle with the toy, careful not to hurt it in any way in case she was to find a cupboard. I wish I could provide that cupboard, but I have a feeling her imagination will do it for her!

On a side note, I finished the Twilight series that is complete and look forward to August for the last book to come out. As my significant other put it is, “kind of girlie”…but the series is good Sci-Fi none the less. The movie comes out in December.

So I’ve been lax on my gardening posts. Later today I will post pics and tell ya what we’re doing. But this is cute. We’ve planted seeds and have been watching the sprouts come up and what not. I woke up today (after working overnight) and the kids rush me outside and show me this

Hmmmm a bare spot in the grass. All three boys are squatted around it, looking at it sooo proudly.

I give in, “what is it?”

“We ate grapes with seeds, and put them in. It’s spring today, we are making grape plants,” says the Dude.

The Man, “We’re gonna makes grwapes!”

The Baby (now known as Repeat), “GRWAPES!”
