No No No.  Bears are vicious creatures and it’s a horrible disservice to perpetuate the misconception- nay, flat out deception- that bears are cuddly and adorable friends to humans.  I mean, nah, I could take a little brown bear, or even black bear, so those two would stand no chance.  I’m not scared, but the idea of them growing up makes me #1 my pants.  The idea of being out on a hike in the wilderness and meeting an adult one of those things, 30 feet in front of me.  I know I’d have to run until my veins corrode from excessive use and pray to my god of choice the entire time, and I know I’d start gunning it and look back to see the bear chugging forward like a freight train with murder in it’s engines and I know the feeling of certainty that I was not just going to die, but that I’d see my penis and jaw be bitten by countless knife-like teeth and swatted off by frying pan sized claws and hurled into the woods before I finally slip to the sweet numbness of death.  Not cool, guys.  Other than that, your site is adorable :3 Everyone reading should give it a browse (cuteoverload.com)

GnuVince just showed me the new Perl 6 logo. The butterfly Camelia:

Clearly, it looks more like a logo for some kind of association for preschoolers or for a day-care center than a logo for a programming language. It’s repulsively cute. Seeying that, I joked with GnuVince that’d I rather have a logo that felt more like the hybrid, duct-taped, patchwork Perl actually is, so I drew the hippocamptopus:

• My friend Political Party Girl and I were chatting and somehow got on the subject of Mr. Rogers. She linked me to this YouTube video of Mr. Rogers testifying before Congress in support of PBS funding, and I swear, my response to Mr. Rogers is almost Pavlovian. I hear his voice and suddenly I’d like to sit down and be still, while munching on some graham crackers, and just hang out with him.  On days when the news is mostly terrible, I need the “what do you do with the mad that you feel” song that he sings at the end more than ever.
• I could probably devote an entire post to the tragic massacre at Fort Hood. Here are a few good pieces to check out: Steve Benen at The Washington Monthly gives the straight facts; Spencer Ackerman of The Washington Independent posts a statement from an Arab-American Military organization and reminds us not to jump to Islamophobic conclusions; Glenn Greenwald at Salon shows us just how misinformed we’d be if we had relied on live TV reporting of the massacre, which he describes as “an orgy of rumor-mongering, speculation and falsehoods that play a very significant role in shaping public perceptions and enabling all sorts of ill-intentioned exploitation.”
• Justice served: one of the Yearning For Zion polygamists has been convicted of sexual assault and faces up to 20 years in prison.
• Anne Lamotte is wonderful. Her letter to the president about health care reform could have been written by me, as I agree with every word.
• Speaking of health reform, would the House bill put children’s health care at risk?

And in other happy news, last weekend Jeff and I ran a half-marathon together (Silicon Valley Marathon). It was an amazing experience; I would definitely do one again (as for a full marathon, well, I’m not so sure ). The weather was amazing and we ran most of it along the Los Gatos Creek trail, which was reasonably scenic…then we got to run a bit around a lake which was absolutely gorgeous.

All the finishers got medals. We also got these really cool dri-fit t-shirts which I ran in.

So excited to finish my first half marathon! Jeff was tired and refused to take a jumping picture with me (thanks Jeff for running it with me!!). But then later he got to do what he loves best – playing football:

I am surrounded by cuteness.

A month or two ago, we adopted two kittens from one of my coworkers (they were free – she had even taken them for their shots). They are adorable and playful and energetic, and they make us laugh. We both need to laugh more. And they cuddle with me at night and that helps me sleep. I hesitated a lot before taking on the additional responsibility, but I think it was the right decision. I am battling the Dread Demon Depression (now as always) and it was horribly bad after Tommy’s death and I wasn’t sleeping at all. The kittens help.

Of course I still miss Tommy, and Jason too. How strange it would be not to miss them. I lived with them for so long, fourteen or fifteen years. Much longer than my marriage.

Which I don’t miss at all.

But I digress…

And the kittens are company for me when I’m alone, and that is more frequent now, what with the Resident Sith Master being an adult now and attending college and all. This fall he’s a full time student at the community college near our place – have I mentioned that? He’s taking Economics and Political Science and a history class that is called “Current Issues” and… another class I can never remember. Have I mentioned that I seem to be losing my memory?

Have I mentioned that I digress a lot?

So, we now have two short-haired gray tiger striped demons kittens. The slightly larger, slightly grayer cat we named Cato* because he attacks everything all the time and without warning.

We named the slightly smaller, sweet-faced cat with darker stripes Mace Window*, because he likes to hang out on the window sills between the glass and the blinds. Although RSM was saying the other day that his name should be Juggernaut.

They certainly create chaos, but it is mostly really funny. Every few hours Mace discovers his tail and does Olympic-level gymnastic flips chasing it. Every few hours. If I had a video camera, we would absolutely win on America’s Funniest Home Videos.

Mace is crazy. Not just chase-your-tail-for-hours crazy, but OCD-evil crazy. Mace will not be turned. Once he gets an idea in his tiny kitty brain, he will continue to try it out. Like attacking the blinds. He pulled one set of blinds down off the window finally.

Mace climbs the screens without mercy, and has taught his brother to try too – definitely not funny as the window screens are old and poorly fitted (so we could lose kittens to the Evil Outdoors) and the screen doors are brand new – so we need to keep them nice for the landlady – and… poorly fitted.

Have I mentioned that my apartment is full of poorly fitting items? It seems to be the major leitmotif. But I digress.

Mace actually found himself outside on one Monday, when my bedroom screen fell out and so did he. At the time, I didn’t even know they could reach my bedroom’s high windowsill. Luckily I hadn’t left for work yet – another 5 minutes and that darn cat would have been outside until RSM woke up and noticed he was gone.

He learned nothing from this experience.

Needless to say, we keep all the windows closed now.

Like Marge, Cato keeps himself in a state of cat-like readiness – the first week or so he twitched almost all the time. He is mellowing a bit now.

But it is a certainty to him that his brother must die. He continues to attack without mercy.

Lucky for all concerned, kittens are easily distracted.

You might even say, they digress.

* I linked to the relevant movies, and here is more info. Cato is the namesake of the character played by Burt Kwouk in the Pink Panther movies (in this clip, Cato is hiding in the freezer). Mace is named after this Jedi character from Star Wars.

Yet I am trusting that most of y’all will understand both references without the links. Only one person at work got it – she’s the only one who has seen both sets of movies, and we even discussed the color of Samuel L. Jackson’s light saber. Oh yes we did.

One other person at work got the Peter Sellers reference (but not the Star Wars one). The rest of them were clueless.

I weep for the lack of culture in my work place.

But I digress again.

It exists – and it’s happening at younger and younger ages.

I’ve just been busy with school//life and such.

Gah I don’t feel like writing, which sucks because I wanted to put up a review for the new movie “9″, but im feeling really lethargic for no real reason. I decided to paint yesterday to break this sleepy daze of mine, here it is:

You may have heard by now that today, 9-09-09, is Urlesque.com’s official Day Without Cats on the Internet. I, for one, have been absolutely shocked by the list of sites that have agreed to participate. ZooBorns? LAUnleashed? Cute Overload? How could you?

I do, however, enjoy the video Urlesque made to promote the day.

I’m okay with removing cats from old memes. And I get that it’s good to sometimes show attention to other animals (and here on world wide whiskers, I do that all the time.) But what if there’s important new cat news today? What if there’s a cat playing a saxophone out there somewhere?

I felt a little weird when I realized that I’ve reviewed two books published by Villard in the past month or so, and both had an abbreviated “f*#%” in the title, but such is my humor. (Our general manager Rhoda actually gave me a copy of  the F Word Dictionary for Christmas the first year I worked at Schuler. Best educational gift ever.)

Anyways, my new blog-turned-book love is F U, Penguin by Matthew Gasteier. I simply couldn’t resist this one, an absolutely hilarious send-up of all my beloved adorable animal sites (think CuteOverload and LOLcats).

Billed as “a rallying cry for those who choose to fight these power-hungry cute-mongers,” “F U, Penguin” is exactly that – an “F U!” to all those cute little animals and the wussies like me who simper with delight whenever their tiny noses grace the computer screen.

From observations (“Egotistical deer always think they are making your day”) to life lessons (“Puppies always leave”) to downright rants (“This bear is essentially raping my soul”), each photo and passage is accompanied by little-known, entertaining, if completely inaccurate, facts about animals. Made me cry (with laughter) like the little sissy I am.

1.) From Beyond the Grave!

Adam and I went to Everyday on Cap Hill this weekend (part of our getting-to-know-the-city-so-lets-walk-around-and-drink-our-way-through-seattle plan) and found a few treasures. Aside from a great Best Of George Carlin album, our hearts nearly stopped when I unconvered a copy of Ted Kennedy’s Address at the 1980 DNC!!! For $3.69, it was pretty much of a steal, especially while the flags are, by-and-large, still at half-mast. The craziest part about it? We went home and listened immediately and, almost thirty years later, it could have been coming from this morning’s NPR broadcast. Not much has changed, except that we no longer have the Lion to speak out about minorities and health care. Very eye-opening.

2.) “Someone call a Waaaah-mbulance!”

Everyone knows how I feel about the fate of journalism. Jon Stewart is, we all know, doing fabulous things for both the mainstream media and real journalism. This showcases some of the best commentary regarding Fox News (guhhhhh) and the ever-growing frenzy surrounding health care. Three cheers for Comedy Central!

3.) WTF Seattle?!

Thusly, all I can do is talk to politicians at my job (www.kuow.org, we’ve got two major local politcos/hottie-hots coming into the studio on Wednesday AM) and educate my local friends. So here I am, educating. COME ON, SEATTLE. Stop overturning things that are good for you! The bag tax? Fine, whatever. But this? Jesus wants people to have end-of-life decisions and tax breaks. I promise.

So last night I was treated to some new pictures of Little C. There were just a handful of them. And they were awesome…

Pics of her on her boppy with D’s head planted just next to hers. Pics of her smiling. And pics of her first trip to the pool….

And pictures of super-chubby cheeks and oh-my-goodness chubby thighs!!!

And the result of said pictures is that if that baby gets a smidge cuter before September, my head (and probably my heart,) will EXPLODE.

I am convinced that the rest of my family are trying to kill me with adorable pictures of Little C.*

This is not nice. At all. It’s downright mean, I tell you. It’s abuse via photographs. “Hey! Look what we can see in person and you can’t!” *

I can’t handle it. She’s so aware in the pictures now… And apparently she’s talking. Well, in gibberish/baby talk. People, I’d sell you a body part to see Little C speak baby talk in person. NO, I am not kidding.

And you better bet the next time I’m there, C and I are going swimming…
