I slept pretty bad, my whole body was aching and my back was itching
Headache, soar throat, nausea, extreme water thirst, slight fever and moaning… I might be coming down with something, but the flu..I think not.
Maybe I should stay home from school tomorrow though..

Yesterday we were down in the city centre for some errands, so we decided to stop by the Cathedral (it’s only a short walk away from the marketplace). I have mentioned the Cathedral before on the blog, but I don’t think I have said much in detail about it, so for those who are interested, here’s more info.

Shortly after the Norman conquest of 1066, a group of Benedictine monks established a community on a peninsula in the River Wear in 1083. Ten years later in 1093, building on the Cathedral began, and the project took about 40 years to complete. Part of the impetus to build the Cathedral at this location was the fact that the relics of St. Cuthbert were already housed at the site in an earlier Cathedral. In fact, St. Cuthbert’s tomb still lies in the Cathedral to this day, along with the remains of another saint, named Bede, who wrote an important history of the early church on the English Isles. Thus, the Cathedral was built as an act of devotion to God, a massive reminder of the reality of the spiritual realm, but it also had a more earthly significance as well. The Normans (a group of people from modern-day France) who ruled England at that time, and who built the Cathedral wanted to send a clear message of political strength to the peoples of the north (Saxons and Scots) who might have been tempted to invade the Norman-controlled south. In fact, a bridge nearby the Cathedral is engraved with the following description of the dominating Cathedral: “Half church of God, half castle ‘gainst the Scot.”

The Cathedral is still used as an Anglican Church to this day, with services being held in it several times a day. Since the university is so closely located to the Cathedral, it has many of its functions there as well. For example, we had our matriculation in the Cathedral last week (matriculation is when everyone dresses up in their graduation gowns and you officially become a student at the university).

The size of the Cathedral is amazing, and its architectural beauty is stunning. Unfortunately, visitors are not permitted to take pictures inside the building, but there are plenty of pictures on the Cathedral’s wikipedia page, if you are interested in seeing some. If you watch many movies, you might have already seen the Cathedral and not realized it. The Cathedral forms part external shot of the Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films, and quite a few interior shots are used in the 1998 film Elizabeth.

While we were in the Cathedral yesterday, we were fortunate enough to have been there during a choir practice. Here is an audio clip I took of the choir singing. What do you think?

This is a brilliantly written masterpiece of a novel I think this is one book which compares with Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in giving reality to a period that may never have existed. This book brings you to the world of twelfth century England and the areas around it. It takes you through the course of one person, Tom, who sets out to build a beautiful cathedral for his wife who he lost while she was giving birth to his third child.

Considering the unfortunate circumstances that Tom was in, he conducts a decent burial, in those circumstances, in the forest and leaves the just-born child in the forest on the grave. However, guilt makes him come back to the grave but the child is no more to be seen. During the course of the story, he realizes that the kid is being well cared for in a monastery which is run by a monk, Philip.

As the story progresses, Philip comes to hire Tom Builder for making a new cathedral for Kingsbridge and the story continues from thereon with all the unexpected twists and turns and with even more expected twists.

The story is well crafted and there is no dull moment when you are reading. Other than a few places where the author seems to have stretched the emotional bit quite some more than necessary, the book is something that you just can’t put down. It is impossible not to get into those periodic times and getting involved with the characters as if they were right in front of you. The author makes you smile when they are happy, sad when something goes wrong and angry when injustice prevails.

A must read for anyone.

Anne Shirley (imię oryginalne, w polskim tłumaczeniu Anna Shirley) – główna bohaterka cyklu powieści młodzieżowych Lucy Maud Montgomery pod tytułem Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza.

Jak podają źródła (oraz przekazy autorki), Anna Shirley urodziła się w marcu 1866 roku, co można również obliczyć na podstawie danych zapisanych w powieściach. Miejscem jej urodzenia jest Bolingbroke w Nowej Szkocji. Rodzice dziewczynki byli nauczycielami. Ojciec nazywał się Walter Shirley, matka – Berta Shirley, z domu Willis. Zmarli na febrę krótko po urodzeniu córki. Dziewczynka trafiła pod opiekę pani Thomas, jej zadaniem było zajmowanie się czwórką młodszych dzieci. Ania przeprowadziła się do Marysville. Kiedy pan Thomas zginął pod kołami pociągu, Anią zaopiekowała się pani Hammond. Tam dziewczynka również niańczyła dzieci, a były to także pary bliźniąt. Mieszkała z tą rodziną dwa lata, aż do śmierci pana Hammond. Wdowa podzieliła dzieci między rodzinę i wyjechała do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Ania trafiła do sierocińca w Hopetown. Po czterech miesiącach trafiła do domu rodzeństwa – Mateusza i Maryli Cuthbertów, którzy mieszkali w Avonlea (zdarzenie miało miejsce jedenaście lat później – w 1877 roku). Okazało się jednak, że chcieli oni adoptować chłopca, który pomagałby w gospodarstwie i nastąpiła tragiczna pomyłka. Maryla była przeciwna adopcji dziewczynki, Mateusz zaś bardzo polubił tę małą istotkę. Rozmowa z panią Spencer zdecydowała, że Ania pozostanie na Zielonym Wzgórzu. Dziewczynka nawiązała szczerą przyjaźń z Dianą Barry. Rozpoczęła naukę w szkółce niedzielnej oraz w wiejskiej szkole w Avonlea. Trzy tygodnie po rozpoczęciu nauki popadła w konflikt z Gilbertem Blythe’m, chłopcem, w którym kochała się większość koleżanek z klasy. Gilbert pociągnął ją za warkocz i nazwał Marchewką, a ona w geście zemsty rozbiła na jego głowie własną tabliczkę. Została ukarana przez nauczyciela i przysięgła sobie, że nigdy nie wróci do szkoły. Stało się jednak inaczej. Postanowiła nie odzywać się do Gilberta i rywalizować z nim w nauce. Niemiłe wspomnienia z lekcji mobilizowały ją.

Już od początku pobytu dziewczyny na Zielonym Wzgórzu, zaczęła przeżywać wiele przygód. Pokłóciła się z sąsiadką Cuthbertów, Małgorzatą Linde, gdyż ta nazwała ją rudą i brzydką. Kilka dni później ze skruchą przeprosiła panią Linde. Innym razem zaprosiła swoją “przyjaciółkę od serca” – Dianę – na podwieczorek. Omyłkowo poczęstowała ją winem porzeczkowym i Diana wróciła do domu w stanie nietrzeźwym. Pani Barry zabroniła Ani kontaktów z córką. Dziewczynka bardzo boleśnie przeżyła tę stratę. Kilka dni później Maryla, pani Linde i rodzice Diany wyjechali do pobliskiego miasta na spotkanie z ważnym politykiem. Ania została z Mateuszem. W pewnym momencie do domu wbiegła Diana i powiedziała, że jej siostra, Minnie, jest poważnie chora. Ania natychmiast pobiegła na ratunek małej i, ku zaskoczeniu lekarza, uratowała Minnie od śmierci. Wdzięczna pani Barry znów pozwoliła Ani i Dianie spotykać się ze sobą.

Ania była zafascynowana przyrodą, była osóbką o nieprzeciętnej wyobraźni. Kiedy pewnego razu przechodziła przez pobliski las, wyobraziła sobie, że w lesie straszą duchy, a w szczególności duch zamordowanej dziewczynki. Odtąd nazywała go Lasem Duchów, ale przyznała, że boi się tamtędy spacerować i powinna bardziej panować nad emocjami. Niewątpliwie autorytetami w tym okresie życia Ani była nauczycielka, pani Muriel Stacy, oraz pani Allen, żona pastora. Pewnego dnia Cuthbertowie zaprosili pastora z żoną na podwieczorek. Dziewczynka postanowiła sama upiec ciasto, ale dodała do niego krople walerianowe. Wszystko wydało się na podwieczorku. Ania była załamana pomyłką.

Pewnego dnia założyła się z koleżanką, że przespaceruje się po dachu domu Barrych. Niestety, spadła z niego i złamała nogę. Wkrótce później postanowiła przefarbować rude włosy, które od zawsze były jej największym, oprócz piegów, kompleksem. Kupiła farbę od przechodzącego handlarza. Efektem były zielone włosy, które Ania musiała ściąć.

Bardzo długo dotrzymała postanowienia i nie rozmawiała z Gilbertem. Gdy z przyjaciółkami przedstawiała Elaine, łódka, w której płynęła Ania jako główna bohaterka, zaczęła tonąć. Chłopak uratował Anię z opresji. Ta jednak nie chciała zrezygnować z urażonej dumy, chłodno mu podziękowała i odeszła.

Ukończyła szkołę w Avonlea, a potem zdała do seminarium nauczycielskiego, w którym również bardzo dobrze się uczyła.

Jej życie załamało się, kiedy w wyniku doznanego szoku (bankructwo banku, w którym Cuthbertowie trzymali swoje oszczędności) zmarł Mateusz. Było to prawdopodobnie w roku 1882. Maryla miała poważne problemy ze wzrokiem. Ania bardzo chciała się uczyć, zwłaszcza dla zmarłego opiekuna, który zawsze był dla niej przyjacielem, jednak postanowiła zostać w domu i opiekować się Marylą. Kobieta chciała nawet sprzedać Zielone Wzgórze, na co panna Shirley nie chciała się zgodzić. Gilbert postanowił pomóc Ani w trudnej sytuacji i oddał jej swoją posadę nauczyciela w Avonlea, a sam rozpoczął pracę w Białych Piaskach. Ania wybaczyła mu dawny uraz.

Otrzymała pracę nauczycielki. Ponadto nadal udzielała się w różnych akcjach, często lokalnych. Założyła między innymi Koło Miłośników Avonlea. Poznała nowego sąsiada, pana Harrisona, z którym toczyła bój o krowę, żerującą na jego działce.

Klub Miłośników Avonlea, pomimo niemiłego wypadku na wstępie (pomalowaniu domu klubowego na ostrą barwę niebieską) czynił wielkie postępy w małej mieścinie Avonlea.

W dalekiej rodzinie Maryli zmarła kobieta, która pozostawiła dwójkę dzieci – bliźnięta Tolę i Tadeusza Keith (urodzonych około 1876 roku). Maryla postanowiła zaopiekować się nimi – w przeciwnym razie trafiłyby do sierocińca. Dzieci przyjechały na Zielone Wzgórze jesienią 1882 roku. Ania pomagała Maryli w zajmowaniu się dziećmi. Problemy sprawiał głównie niespokojny Tadzio, ale znalazł w Ani duży autorytet i bardzo się z nią zaprzyjaźnił.

Podczas jednego ze spacerów po wiosce, Ania z Dianą odnalazły tajemniczy dom. Okazało się, że mieszka tam panna Lawenda wraz ze służącą Karoliną Czwartą, a domek nazywa się Chatką Ech. Ania bardzo polubiła dom i jego mieszkańców. Wkrótce panna Lawenda wzięła ślub z panem Irvingiem, ojcem Jasia(lub Paula)- najwierniejszego ucznia Ani. Miało to miejsce w roku 1884.

w tym samym roku osiemnastoletnia panna Shirley zdała egzaminy na studia i opuściła Avonlea. Niestety, zmarł mąż pani Linde, Tomasz w wyniku czego, Małgorzata przeprowadza się na Zielone Wzgórze. Ania zatem wyjechała do Kingsport, aby uczyć się w słynnej szkole w Redmond. Wraz z koleżankami – Stellą, Priscillą i Phil(lub Izabelą) – zamieszkała w wynajętym Ustroniu Patty. Na tej samej uczelni studiował Gilbert i adorator Ani – Karol Sloane. Rywalizacja w nauce trwała nadal. Wśród studentów krążyły plotki o związku panny Shirley z Royem (lub Robertem) Gardnerem oraz Gilberta Blythe’a z panna Stuart. Gilbert nie ukrywał, że czuje do Ani coś więcej niż tylko przyjaźń i oświadczył się jej. Ta jednak nie przyjęła bukietu róż…

Następnego dnia wyjechała z Izą do Bolingbroke. Było to w roku 1886. Ania bardzo przeżywała wizytę w mieście, w którym tak wiele przeżyli jej rodzice. Odwiedziła dom swoich narodzin. Była wzruszona. Obecna pani domu wręczyła jej odnalezione listy, które pisali do siebie państwo Shirleyowie. Dom był dokładnie taki, jak Ania go sobie wyobrażała. Wieczorem wybrała się na cmentarz, gdzie złożyła kwiaty na grobie swoich rodziców. Wyznała Izie, że nie jest już sierotą…

Panna Gordon poznała pastora Jonasza( lub Jerzego) Blake’a i wkrótce została jego żoną. Diana Barry, przyjaciółka od serca, w czerwcu 1887 roku została żoną Freda Wrighta. Ania z sukcesem ukończyła studia. Kiedy wróciła na Zielone Wzgórze, Tadzio nieopatrznie powiedział jej, że Gilbert umiera. Załamana dziewczyna całą noc czuwała. Zrozumiała teraz, że kocha Gilberta. Rozpaczała, że nie zdąży mu o tym powiedzieć. Miała wyrzuty sumienia, że nie może teraz przy nim być.

Następnego dnia parobek sąsiadów powiedział jej, że nastąpiło przesilenie i Gilbert prawdopodobnie wyzdrowieje. Kilka dni później Ania spotkała się z mężczyzną. Wyznali sobie miłość. Gilbert poprosił Anię, aby została jego żoną. Odpowiedź była twierdząca.

Gilbert przez następne trzy lata kontynuował studia medyczne, a Ania otrzymała posadę dyrektora w szkole w Summerside. Zamieszkała w Szumiących Topolach z ciocią Kasią, ciocią Misią i Rebeką Dew. Wicedyrektor szkoły, Julianna Brooke, nie akceptowała jej. Miała problemy z dominującym i wpływowym rodem Pringle’ów. Zjednała sobie wielu przyjaciół – Elżbietkę, krzywdzoną przez kobiety opiekujące się nią, Paulinę – córkę matki despotki, w końcu również pannę Brooke, która opowiedziała jej tragiczną historię swojego życia.

Po trzech latach pracy Ania opuściła Szumiące Topole i wróciła do Avonlea. Spotkała się Dianą, już panią Wright, która była mamą małej Ani Kordelii i Freda. Ostatecznie pożegnała się z pracą nauczycielki i stanem panieńskim, a na Zielonym Wzgórzu trwały przygotowania do ślubu.

We wrześniu 1891 roku Anne Shirley i Gilbert Blythe zostali małżeństwem. Panna Shirley była pierwszą panną młodą na Zielonym Wzgórzu. Młodzi wyjechali do Glen St. Mary – wioski położonej nad zatoką, gdzie zamieszkali w wymarzonym domku. Gilbert przejął praktykę lekarską swojego wuja, Davida (lub Tomasza). Poznali pannę Kornelię Bryant i kapitana Jamesa (lub Jima), z czasem zatrudnili służącą Zuzannę Baker. Ania zaprzyjaźniła się z Ewą(lub Leslie) Moore – kobietą, która opiekowała się swoim poważnie chorym mężem. W czerwcu 1892 roku Ania urodziła córkę – Joyce. Dziewczynka zmarła tuż po urodzeniu. Ania bardzo długo powracała do zdrowia po utracie dziecka.

Gilbert powiedział Ani, że istnieje szansa na całkowite wyleczenie męża Ewy. Doszło do operacji. Jak się okazało, nie był on domniemanym mężem, ale szwagrem kobiety. Ewa zakochała się w pisarzu Owenie Fordzie i wkrótce zostali małżeństwem. Owen napisał Księgę Życia Kapitana Jima.

W 1893 roku Ania urodziła syna. Blythe’owie nadali mu imiona James Mateusz. W tym samym roku Gilbert podjął decyzję o zakupie posiadłości Morganów i przeprowadzce, gdyż w tak odlegle położonym miejscu nie mógł wypełniać funkcji lekarza. Pewnego wieczoru państwo Blythe’owie wybrali się do latarni. Znaleźli tam martwego kapitana Jima, który czytał swoją Księgę Życia.

Wkrótce przeprowadzili się do Złotego Brzegu. Rok później na świat przyszedł Walter, a w 1896 bliźniaczki Diana i Ania. W 1898 Ania urodziła syna Shirleya, a rok później najmłodszą córkę Bertę Marillę. Zmarł ojciec Gilberta i Blyth’owie wybrali się do Avonlea na pogrzeb. Ania spotkała się z Dianą, z radością jednak wróciła do gromadki swoich dzieci. Przez pewien czas w Złotym Brzegu mieszkała ciotka Gilberta – Mary Maria Blythe. Dzieci nie lubiły jej, gdyż bardzo często ich krytykowała. Ania postanowiła wydać przyjęcie w dniu jej urodzin, o co ciocia bardzo obraziła się – zdradzono publicznie jej wiek. Opuściła dom Blythe’ów. Ania poważnie zachorowała. Gilbert troskliwie opiekował się nią. Stał się najlepszym lekarzem w okolicy.

Zbliżał się dzień piętnastej rocznicy ślubu Ani i Gilberta. Kobieta była pewna, że mąż zapomniał o ich święcie. Oznajmił, że spędzą ten dzień na imprezie. Jednym z gości miała być Krystyna Stuart. Ania była obrażona. Ubrała się w sukienkę, której Gilbert nie lubił. Czuła się jak szara myszka przy pani Stuart. Była zazdrosna o męża, który rozmawiał z nią cały wieczór. Kiedy wrócili do domu, poszła do swojego pokoju. Po schodach wbiegł Gilbert. Wręczył jej piękny naszyjnik. Wytłumaczył, co zaprzątało jego myśli przez ostatnie dni. Ania była bardzo szczęśliwa.

W Glen St. Mary zamieszkał nowy pastor z dziećmi i ciotką. Okazało się, że jest wdowcem, zupełnie nie zainteresowanym poczynaniami gromadki. Tymczasem Flora (lub Faith, ur. 1895), Gerald (lub Jerry, ur. 1894), Una (ur. 1896) i Tomasz Carlyle (lub Karolek, ur. 1897) robiły wiele rzeczy, począwszy od zabawy na cmentarzu. Ania stała się powierniczką problemów dzieci, zwłaszcza że zaprzyjaźnili się z nimi młodzi Blythe’owie. Utrzymywała kontakty z panną Kornelią, która zdążyła zmienić stan cywilny i adoptować Mary Vance.

Rok 1914 – rozpoczyna się I wojna światowa. Jim, Walter i Shirley wyjechali do Europy, aby walczyć na froncie. Dla rodziny Blythe’ów zaczęły się smutne dni grozy i oczekiwania. W 1916 roku dotarła do nich straszna wiadomość o śmierci Waltera. Ania bardzo podupadła na zdrowiu. Rozpaczała też Una – ukochana chłopaka. Dwa lata później Jim (miłość Flory)i Shirley powrócili do Glen St. Mary. Wrócił również Krzysztof Ford – wielka miłość Rilli…

Carlisle Cathedral is set to host what promises to be an excellent festival later this week (Thursday 30 April to Sunday 3rd May) to celebrate St Cuthbert and his connections with Carlisle and the surrounding region.

The events will include:

• a keynote address delivered in the cathedral by Prof. Richard Sharpe on the evening of Thursday 30^th April at 7.30pm. (This event will be sponsored by the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society)

• an all-day coach trip to see the Bewcastle and Ruthwell crosses on Friday 1^st April, led by the Bishop of Huntingdon (!) – who in another life is a recent writer about the Bewcastle Cross.
• an all-day academic seminar chaired by Dr Jonathan Wooding on Saturday 2^nd May in the Fratry building at the Cathedral. Speakers will include Dr Hugh Doherty, Dr Fiona Edmonds, Dr Mary Low, Dr Mike McCarthy, Dr Alan Thacker, and Dr Jonathan Wooding.
• The Dean of Durham will be the preacher at the 10.30 Cathedral Eucharist on Sunday 3rd May

Another week, another set of people upset by the mouth of DJ Wanker.
 
Most of you will be well aware that I’m one of those people who says what he thinks, often without thinking of the consequences. The opinions I give are not for my benefit – just for the greater good of society, obviously.
 
There have been several occasions in the past week where my words of wisdom have fallen on the deafest of deaf ears. One of the people was right to be pissed off as I mishandled the situation. Another knows me well enough to understand it was heartfelt concern. But as for the others… well, where do I start?
 
Some seem to think that being ‘controlled’ by their partner is acceptable. While it’s technically none of my business, if they ask my advice, I give it to them straight and shoot direct from the hip. Don’t ask me if you don’t want to know what I genuinely think.
 
There are, of course, others who value the opinion and act on it because, without blowing my own trumpet, it’s straightforward common sense. Sometimes they need an unrelated third party to spell it out in simple terms.
 
One women said to me this week: “A man should be flattered if their girlfriend gets jealous.” There is not one thing about jealously which is in the slightest bit flattering. Jealousy can be the most destructive thing in a relationship. If you don’t trust someone, what the fuck are you doing with them? If someone controls what you do, decides what you wear, where you go and who you’re “allowed” to be friends with, then you’re batting on a very sticky wicket. You only have yourself to blame if you put up with it. A bully only gets away with their antics if they’re not challenged.
 
If I was in a relationship, I’d probably allow one instance of jealousy before making a swift exit. I’d lay down a marker and let them know that it’s totally unacceptable. Do it again, it’s bye-bye baby. I’m with you because I love you and trust you and the reverse should equally be true. I guess that’s one of the reasons why I’m single. The search to find a woman who can act reasonably, calmly, can negotiate a compromise and doesn’t over-react to trivialities is a long one and, quite obviously, a thorough work-in-progress.
 
As a species, we dramatically over-complicate the simple things in life whether out of stupidity or just because of our basic human frailties. One bloke got the almighty hump in Pussycats because his other half (who, by the way, he was separated from at the time) was wearing an ‘I Love DJ Wanker’ sticker so he petulantly ripped it off. She doesn’t love me in that sense, obviously. It’s a fucking sticker for Christ sake. How ridiculous can someone be?
 
I was chatting with a woman on Friday, she texted me her details so I could ‘tag’ some photos of her on Facebook. There was nothing more to it than that. The following night, I get pulled to one side by someone whose opinion I always listen to and was advised not to text her because her boyfriend had somehow found out and was planning to “kick my ass.” There had clearly been some kind of misunderstanding but it’s another example of how people over-react. I had not asked this woman out or made any kind of gesture in that regard. Remember, it was her who texted me and was happy to be Facebook friends and have the pictures tagged. That was it. I’m still shaking my head in disbelief now.

Talking of mobile communications, my best friend Phil was dumped via text message at the weekend. His girlfriend – who he lived with – didn’t write: “It’s not you, it’s me” but that was the implication. What a pitiful way to end a relationship. If that’s the best she can do, he’s better off without her. Phil, like my other close mate Dale, has really gone through the mill in the past year but will come out the other side wiser and stronger, like Dale has.
 
Maybe I’m the unlucky link in all this. Phil is crashing at my house in Leicestershire until he gets his life back on track. He has a room in the ‘dumped by text’ wing of my opulent mansion.

The biggest c*** I encountered at the weekend was a pathetic specimen who used to rent a room with Dale and Bevo in St George’s – the room I now rent when I stay in Telford at weekends – before getting a job well away from the area. He moved out two or three weeks ago and took almost everything, including his bed, leaving just a few odds and sods. The lads bought another bed for me and they told him that, as he had paid until the end of March, he could use Dale’s room should he come back to Telford at the weekend as Dale often stays with his other half.
 
The choice that faced him was sleeping on a knackered, bumpy single mattress on the floor in his old room – or have Dale’s comfortable double bed and use of a room with digital TV. This was surely a no-brainer. He hadn’t let the lads know he was coming back at the weekend (which would’ve been nice if not essential) and just turned up on Saturday. He didn’t say anything to my face or to Dale or Bevo.
 
Then, later on, his Facebook status indicated he was very unhappy with the situation. The unreasonable tosser then bombarded Dale with texts demanding money back and just generally hurling abuse. The spineless prick couldn’t even say it to our faces.
 
You might have gathered that I’m not a fan of his. I wasn’t a fan before this happened because he used to treat a female friend of mine with what I consider to be an unacceptable level of respect. While she’s (by her own admission) a bit highly strung on occasions, I’ve seen her reduced to tears with what he’s done and said. From what I gather, a number of other women in Telford have succumbed to his ‘charms’ and now rather wish they hadn’t.
 
For the record, I don’t begrudge any young, single man sowing his wild oats – people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, of course – but, in my opinion, women should be treated a damn sight better than what some men think is acceptable.
 
Anyway, back to the crib, and both Dale and Bevo were very angry with the way he had acted. It was a juvenile way of behaving and, when I mentioned it to some of his acquaintances, they weren’t entirely surprised. Maybe he’ll learn to treat people differently. Dale and Bevo were meant to be his mates.
 
Last year I crashed there after a night out and found a game of Scrabble in the lounge. Not exactly rock’n’roll for three young chaps but there you go. Anyway, I re-arranged some of the letters on the Scrabble board and spelled out: “Treat women with respect” hoping the message might get through.

While it was extremely sad to hear the news of Jade Goody’s expected demise at the weekend, yet again as a nation we have got our priorities out of proportion. Jade was an ill-educated, thick, ignorant (and possibly racist) member of society with little discernible talent. Fair play to her for making a mint before the illness and she deserves plenty of credit for earning shedloads for the future well-being of her kids when she was diagnosed with cancer.
 
The mass media coverage also highlighted how cancer can tragically strike someone so young and thousands of women will have gone for a smear test having seen the stories so that’s a massive positive to take. However, one of my Facebook friends posted this status update: “RIP Jade, we will miss you.”
 
Will you really miss her? Her kids, family and friends will for sure but some random girl from Telford who (presumably) never met her? I don’t think so. What did she really add to the fabric of our society? That said, I’m sure she was a loving mum to the two boys, a caring daughter to her disabled mother and a loyal friend to the people around her.
 
Please don’t take this as being someone speaking ill of the dead as I’ve said similar stuff about her in the past. I am genuinely sad that a young woman of 27 has been robbed of the best years of her life by something as nasty as cancer and that her lads will miss out on having their mum around. I dread the day either of my parents go but they’re the wrong side of middle age (that’s a son being polite) and – so far – I’ve had 30+ amazing years of their wit and wisdom.
 
The outpouring of grief over what was in effect a two-bob reality TV star seems out of kilter with what she brought to the table. You can understand why Princess Diana’s untimely death provoked the reaction it did even if it was still a little excessive. I sincerely hope Jade rests in peace, free from the agony of cancer which made her final months so terrible. But let’s not paint her as some kind of modern day Mother Theresa and retain some perspective.
 
For those of you who have texted and emailed me with ‘jokes’ about Jade Goody’s illness and death, I can assure you I have found none of them funny.

Onto other news and Pretentious Pete posted a message on Facebook saying my DJ name is “beyond irony.” He may well be right, of course. I suppose that’s irony like – for example – an average-looking guy working for a modelling company.

Obviously I wish I could be as ‘good’ as these bedroom DJs who don’t get any work in the real clubbing world. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong, getting well paid to help entertain 1500+ people every weekend by playing big tunes the customers seem to like as they keep coming back. I’m scratching my bald head in bemusement as I write this. Oh – and yes… I am being sarcastic, obviously.

News from Pussycats: we’re edging ever closing to the first weekend in April and the arrival of hip-hop’s big dog Tim Westwood (Friday 3rd April). I know some people really don’t buy into his thing but he’s mega successful at what he does and has a towering personality. The day before is my birthday so plenty of sherbets will be partaken at Pussycats on Thursday before the official DJ Wanker Birthday Bash rolls into town on Saturday (4th).

Set your Sky+ for… a programme called Genius (BBC2, Friday), hosted by the excellent Dave Gorman. The first episode was hilarious and the rest of the series has much to live up to. Catherine Tate was the guest last week and Frank Skinner, as friendly and funny in real life as he is on the telly, joins Dave this week.
 
Still worth checking out: Harry Hill’s TV Burp (ITV1, Saturday); Not Going Out (BBC1, Friday); The Bill (ITV1, Wed/Thu); Piers Morgan’s Life Stories (ITV1, Sunday) and Celebrity Juice with Keith Lemon (ITV2, Wednesday) – the only show where you can see Orville getting angry and Verne Troyer randomly rugby-tackling a traffic cone.
 
Hit-and-miss but worth persisting with: Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder (ITV1, Friday); Chris Moyles’ Quiz Night (Channel 4, Sunday); Shameless (Channel 4, Tuesday)
 
Don’t fucking bother: Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle (BBC2, Monday) – just not funny and smug as hell; Holloway (ITV1, Tuesday) – a dull documentary inside a women’s prison rather than the story of a football manager who ruined my life; Extreme Fishing with Robson Green (Channel 5, Monday) – fishing AND Robson Green, what more do I need to say?

Readers of an older vintage may remember a kids’ TV show called Rainbow which featured Geoffrey, Bungle, George and Zippy as well as Rod, Jane and Freddy. Well, Jane was a guest on the new Justin Lee Collins chat show (ITV2, Sunday) and she revealed she was once married to Rod and is now married to Freddy! Whatever next… Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb from the Trumpton Fire Service were pole dancers in a Soho go-go bar? Or maybe Bagpuss was not a soppy, old cloth cat (and a bit loose at the seams) after all but in fact was Emily’s pimp with Professor Yaffle running the brothel?
 
I accept that some of you won’t understand those references but it has done wonders for my nostalgia!

El otro dia que estuve de fisgon buscando fotos sexys, encontre estas bellisimas imagenes de la buenisima guerita, tomadas de revista, que, por supuesto, nunca llegaron a Mexicalpan de la Tunas. Pues bien, yo quiero compartirlas con ustedes, camaradas pajilleros. ¿Para que, se preguntaran? No sean ingratos y vean las fotos. ¡Puta madre, yo por una mujer asi, si mato, me cae! Y como no esta de mas recordar la hermosura y sabrosura de  Elisha Cuthber, una verdadera reina,  pues no queda mas que rendirle pleitesia y venerarla como la diosa que es… le neta!!!

I just wanted to post a couple of shots – I visited my cousin and his wife again today to take some more pictures of baby Tiegan – she is now just over two weeks old and absolutely beautiful … I really enjoyed spending time with this lovely family and am looking forward to posting more over the next couple of days …
