No. Most cutters DO NOT cut for the attention. Most cutters cut as a coping mechanism for pain. For many cutters it is easier to cope with physical pain rather than their intense emotional pain.

2) Are most self-cutters suicidal? No. Most cutters are engaged in the ritual of what is called non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Unfortunately, episodes may become so intense, the self-cutter may unintentionally invoke death upon themselves.

3) Is self-cutting a phase? No. Self-cutting is a coping mechanism and addiction and should be taken very seriously. It is an addiction that effects males and females at any age!

4) Is there a cure for self-cutting? Like any addiction, there are ways to manage the addiction. Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as well as substitute devices may be used to manage the addiction.

5) Can self-cutting lead to other diseases? Yes. While most self-cutters use one specific device to cut in a somewhat ritualistic manner, the device they initially use may be unclean or unsanitary. This may lead to infection, blood borne diseases such as hepatitis or even tetanus. It is suggested that ALL CUTTERS OBTAIN A TETANUS SHOT AND/OR HEPATITIS SERIES FOR THEIR OWN PROTECTION.

6) How do I know if someone I love is cutting? It is very difficult to tell. Cutting is a ritual general triggered by anxiety, trauma, or depression relating primarily to self-esteem. America does Christmas well. They’ve always been a good five years in front of us when it comes to Christmas crafts and baking, and this is nowhere more in evidence than on Pinterest. Christmas 2012 (on Pinterest, at least) seems to be Northern European in theme – stretching up from Holland to Sweden and Denmark, with spiced Dutch Speculaas biscuits, brown paper presents decorated with small ‘evergreen’ branches and anything red-and-white all being pinned and repinned. Pinterest is wonderful for finding inspiration and ideas and it’s probably been partly the cause of my high levels of excitement for Christmas this year. It also was probably the cause of a rather serious bout of Christmas craft disillusionment this afternoon, which struck whilst I was covered from wrist to elbow in rapidly-setting white icing. I have realized, once again and hopefully for the last time, that I will never be able to ice biscuits as prettily as they are iced on Pinterest. Never. The icing bag and the red food colouring went in the bin. I did have fun though, and these turned out sort of… rustically elegant (ish) in the end, if not quite the red-and-white iced stunners that I had been so certain they would be.

I used Nigella’s recipe for sugar cookies, which made a really nice crisp biscuit and would be perfect for icing, if you were so inclined.  When I was cutting them out I made a little hole in the cookie dough with a skewer so that some could be hung up as Christmas decorations – I made a few with silver balls and strung them along a velvet ribbon. You could ditch the silver balls and hang a dozen of them on plain string for a sweet Christmas food gift.

Christmas Cookies

Makes around 20-25 medium-sized biscuits

Cookie cutters (I had a Christmas tree, a gingerbread cutter, a heart and stars of all sizes)

90g soft butter

100g caster sugar

200g plain flour

1 large egg

1/2tsp real vanilla extract

1/2tsp baking powder

Icing

100g icing sugar and a few drops of boiling water

- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Cream the soft butter and sugar in a free-standing mixer until it is light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to mix and sieve the flour and  baking powder in. Mix by hand until it comes together, then form it into a ball by hand. Chill the dough in the fridge to make it a little easier to work with. Sprinkle the work surface with a small dusting of flour and roll out the dough to the thickness of 1/2 a centimetre. Cut shapes out of the dough. This dough is fairly sturdy, so don’t worry about balling it up again and re-rolling, maybe with a tiny bit more flour if necessary.  Make a little hole in each cookie and place the dough shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until light golden and ‘set’ (they will crisp up further as they cool). Re-pierce the hole in the cookie while it is still warm and pliable. Transfer them to a baking sheet and allow to cool fully. Then ice them, decorate them, make them pretty.

As a depressive myself, I have been prone to harming myself in the past. My wrists aren’t covered in scars, but it’s not exactly questionable as to what certain marks might be; and what they were caused by. I always tried to keep my scars under wraps, they’re not exactly something I willingly go and flaunt, I went through a phase of applying concealer to my scars every day to hide them – but this eventually became tedious and tiresome.
I then started wearing long sleeved tops or hoodies, even in the Summer. These were only temporary solutions, and I eventually had no choice but to accept the fact; they’re not going anywhere. 

I’ve been known to scare people off with them, especially when I hand cash to a cashier, they can’t help but catch sight and no doubt they’re thinking “Oh, God”. It’s one of these things you eventually learn to live with, and just brush off your shoulder. When it comes to meeting new people, of course it becomes the ‘question of the day’; does she or doesn’t she? I’ve come across those who have a problem with it, and those who don’t. Most don’t even question it, they just accept what is. Despite me saying ‘most’, it makes a change.

But then I read: “It’s true, no one could ever love someone who cuts themselves”
and it quite upset me. It’s not true, not one word of that statement is true, in fact it’s extremely ignorant.

I’ve been with my boyfriend for just over six months, he knew as soon as I met him ‘what was up’. He never judged me, just offered me advice and said if I ever felt the need to harm myself again, call him. He has only ever offered support. Never ever lectures, never called me stupid, never treated me differently because of it. That’s all we need, us ‘cutters’ support. Cutting is an addictive thing, it’s as addictive as smoking, as addictive as drugs.
Of course we don’t like it, and we’d rather stop – but we’re not asking for others to tell us to stop, just to offer the support that could potentially help us to.

My boyfriend is fully aware of my situation, knows when I first did it, when I last did it.
How deep, where, with what? He knows all the gory details but still sticks around.
I quote last night in a phone-call, “because I love you”. He has no qualms with even kissing freshly made wounds. He has no problem with it, of course he’d rather me stop, but he (like me) accepts that they’re there, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. He accepts the scars are a part of me, and if anything, says it proves how ”strong” I am, due to the fact the scars are almost like a scrapbook of rough times I’ve been through; but I still made it out the other end.

In fact, a lot of people accept me for the scars they do see. I’m extremely lucky to have a group of friends that I don’t have to hide around. But I just wanted to say, to any other cutters out there; please don’t be afraid that no one will ever love you because of the scars you wear. I’m living proof that that little theory up there is nothing but bullshit. 
Regardless of your scars, someone will and should love you no matter what.
You will be loved by somebody. People are not as cruel as some like to believe.

We want to be given a chance to prove our scars do not define us; others want the chance to prove they understand that and are willing to do what it takes to support you through it.

]]> <![CDATA[my 25th birthday is in a few days]]> http://lnikkipensonw.com/2012/11/29/my-25th-birthday-is-in-a-few-days/ Thu, 29 Nov 2012 01:47:54 +0000 lnikkipensonw http://lnikkipensonw.com/2012/11/29/my-25th-birthday-is-in-a-few-days/ ok so i will admit i am drunk no lie. i dont write as much cuz i been clean of meth for about 3 weeks. i think about using all the time i cant stop my addiction and i completely broke it off with Justin who was my roomie and the guy who got me hooked on meth. i havent seen my dad in almost a year. my marriage is still falling apart. my family still clueless to almost everything. suicidal more than ever. what else can i say my life is a mess even if it seems on the outside i got it together i am dying on then inside. i loved justin but he apparently didnt feel the same. i am on the rebound and well shit keeps getting worse it seems. i start school in jan and thats a good start but i have no idea how my anexiety will hold up. everyday is a struggle now and more confusing than the last. i have a bad feeling that the end is near and not to due to me. if justin keeps using like he has been he will kill me no matter what. i cant count on god to save me like he has been. Racheal i cant get her out of my head last couple of days she keeps alive some how i feel like if it wasnt for her son i  would have shot myself in the face along time ago. Oding is poitnless tried so many times i ve given up hope on it ever working. my addiction to meth haunts me everyday but some how i manage not to use. achole at this point drives me to stay here numbs the shit i dont wanna feel anymore. common with borderline personality disorder is addictions and lose of life. i am almost 25 and shit haunts me more today than then they did yesterday. thing r getting worse no meds for almost 6 months n i am continuing on a down hill spiral as my sister did i dont know where to go or what to do anymore i am just going with the flow at this point. why try and stop what i cant? i get tried of fighting and really why fight what is probably meant to be kicking and screaming on the way down only hurts me and my family. its killing me this life is making me lose hope in myself and in mankind so why bother. maybe i am just drunk or maybe i am right who knows at this point i dont care anymore.
