This week in Robotics . . .

“Three employees of Japan’s Cyberdyne robotics company recently demonstrated a new “people-assisting” device: an exoskeleton that could help injured or disabled people walk. The system is called “HAL 5,” and three prototypes of the technology paraded through Tokyo this week.”

http://io9.com/5329164/the-cyborg-exoskeletons-of-the-future-take-to-the-streets

Am I the only one just a little disturbed that the company is called Cyberdyne and the robot bits are named HAL? Macabre sense of humor to be sure.

Guess I should probably announce this sooner rather than later. My friend Ryan King and I are soon going to launch STALE POPCORN, a webcomic about life in a movie theater. I’ll keep you updated here about the project as it moves forward. We’ve got bunches of ideas, so it should be a fun ride.

Something else I wanted to get out there was a link to this article on theforce.net entitled “Young Padawan Needs Our Help”

“Dear Friends,

A friend of mine I went to high school with recently found out her 3 year old daughter has Cancer. Her name is Maddie and she is just adorable. It breaks my heart to see anyone, especially young children have to suffer through chemo treatments and long hospital stays. The parents ( Kelly & Ray ) are having a hard time making ends meet. Kelly has depleted her leave and is not drawing a salary. The ambulance ride alone was more than $3K, which is not covered by health insurance.

They are having a benefit at the Taberg Legion ( Taberg, New York ) on September 12th for Maddie. If there is ANYTHING you could donate for the raffles, that would be wonderful. Here is a recent update from her grandmother.”

http://www.theforce.net/latestnews/story/Young_Padawan_Needs_Our_Help_125461.asp

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a strong supporter of the 501st Stormtrooper Legion, what they do, and their work with children’s charities. There’s a reason I link to the 501st site off of this blog. I have a friend in the Legion and hope to join a garrison myself some day. This is right in their wheelhouse and I felt a duty to spread the word.

The Japanese company Cyberdyne has invented a robotic exoskeleton that will “help people with weak leg muscles and mobility problems.”

Why, exactly, is this news apocalypse-worthy? The AP writes:

Cyberdyne said its 22 pound (10 kilogram) HAL — short for hybrid assistive limb — is equipped with sensors that read brain signals directing limb movement through the skin.

HAL. They named it HAL.

They actually named a robot designed to interface with the human nervous system HAL.

Thank you oh-so-very-much, Cyberdyne. It’s people like you who make this blog possible. If you don’t know who HAL is, he’s the sentient computer who runs the spaceship in 2001: A Space Odyssey and tries to murder all the humans on board.

Now, let’s think about this for a minute. The target demographic for the real-life HAL is the elderly. Maybe things are a little different in Japan, where they probably all use flying cars by now, but in the rest of the world, old people already don’t trust machines — let alone one whose namesake is a computer who unplugs hibernating astronauts’ life support. I’m pretty sure that being unplugged from life support is old peoples’ number one fear.

Bad business move, if you ask me. Wonderful for the apocalypse, though.

I’m intrigued to see where this trend of creating machines that can read the signals from our brains will lead. They’re thinking pretty small right now, what with only fixing limbs that are already weak. Why not give people more limbs? Like, four more. They’d have to be more like tentacles that attach directly to our spines and we could finally get all that work done we’ve been meaning to do. Of course, then we’d be misunderstood and we’d have to always fight Spider-Man.

Curses!

C+ Even if you have never seen one of the Terminator movies, chances are you’ve heard the catchphras

C+

Even if you have never seen one of the Terminator movies, chances are you’ve heard the catchphrases they have spawned. The first film in the franchise, which now includes four movies and a TV show, gave us “Come with me if you want to live,” and “I’ll be back.” The far superior second film with it’s groundbreaking special effects, great script, and Arnold, gave us “Hasta La Vista, Baby.” So what does the newest installment leave you with? It leaves only a bad taste in your mouth from all of the regurgitation.

Plot

We start off in 2003 with Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a convicted killer with a mysterious past we never get to witness. He has some unknown connection with Dr. Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter) who convinces him to sign his body away to Cyberdyne, the company behind Skynet, on the day of his execution.

We flash to the year 2018 after Skynet has become self aware and declared war on human-kind. This is where we get our first look at the adult John Conner (Christian Bale), and it is an impressive entrance. The action scenes here are crisp and quick, especially the helicopter crash. Marcus emerges from the rubble after a battle , clothed in mud, and screams. I guess it’s supposed to represent his re-birth or whatever, but it just comes across as cheesy. The dialogue is a problem, and it sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Deep inside the Resistance command center (located in a submarine), we learn that the humans have discovered a device that will immobilize the machines. So John Conner offers his skills to test it out. During this meeting he also finds out that the machines have targeted his teenage father, Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) Meanwhile, Marcus is wondering around the desert aimlessly it seems. He ends up stumbling upon Kyle Reese and Star (Jadagrace Berry) his mute little comrade. They go through a few adventures trying to find John Connor and escaping the HKs (Hunter Killers), which is by far the best part of the movie. Eventually, Reese and Star are taken by the machines to Skynet, and Marcus is literally skipped like a stone across a lake, and left for dead.

The rest of the movie is a garbled mess. The story goes haywire and leaves questions that should be explained. Some are never alluded to at all, like Conner’s wife (Bryce Dallas Howard) being pregnant. Then there is a whole scene of mayhem after Marcus is captured and tries to escape the Resistance compound with the help of a hot Resistance fighter named Blair (Moon Bloodgood—What a rad name). The entire scene is pointless, much like the movie. It makes you want to shake your head and laugh. (Not in a good way.)

Best Bits

The action scenes are sharp, rapid, and full of energy. This coupled with a fantastically low brassy score by the always magnificent Danny Elfman make the scenes thrilling. The machines themselves produce a symphony of terror that would make any sound mixer/editor proud. The other good thing, for me at least, was that I only had to pay $5 to watch it. Though it’s worth $5, I wouldn’t pay any more than that.

Worst Pieces

The rest of the movie falls under this category. You know how I mentioned all the infamous lines quoted from the first 2 films; well they are on display here. In fact, there are many scenes that are similar as well. A T-600 without its lower half attacks Conner as it did his mother in the first movie. The end of the movie takes place in a factory like T1 and T2, and the machines are still trying to kill John Conner. The machines in the first 2 movies were ruthless, and would not stop until you were dead. Here you don’t really get that. They are reduced to a mainframe out for vengeance, with a secret plan that is completely see-through.

Unlike T1 and T2, T4 is not directed by James Cameron and that is its biggest flaw. I don’t think Cameron would have said yes to this script, but even if he did, it still would’ve ended up a cut above this mess. Director MCG, whose name alone screams douche-bag, is in way over his head. That was evident with his resume which reads: Charlie’s Angels 1 & 2.

The cast does an ok job. Worthington’s Marcus is supposed to be a confused man/machine who doesn’t know where he belongs; but he never draws you into that struggle. Bale lacks the depth that he usually brings to the screen. No one else really matters. They just show up and say their lines. (Except for the mute girl, she just stares intensely.) I mean no one is really bad, but no one really stands out either.

All of this brings us to the script which, in short, sucks! Maybe Worthington only acts confused because he really is confused by this ridiculous story. No character development whatsoever and it all goes overboard in the final act. It does set up another sequel, and I hear Bale has signed on for 2 more.

“I’ll be back” was a phrase that everyone loved to quote when I was a kid, and it was celebrated. I’m sad to say it, but I hope he never returns.

Also: Gut guckbar!

Absatz!

— in vielerlei Hinsicht problematisch.

With the frontier of robotics being pushed farther and farther humanity is bound to turn robots into advanced weaponry or Terminators. Not all robotics are weaponry however, one such example is the HAL suit or Hybrid Assistive Limb produced by Cyberdyne HAL basically helps users move or lift more weight. However it could be implemented to assist soldiers on the battlefield.
The scary part about HAL is the name of the company Cyberdyne…. That is the same name as the company the produced the Terminators in the Terminator series.
Militarily speaking several robots are being brought out to win defense contracts. One of those is the Ripsaw
and another one is the Foster-Miller TALON

Terminator Makes and Models by Scott Huver

T-1

First Appearance: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Specs: The “missing link” between conventional war machines and the Terminators to come, the Series T-1 was created by Cyberdyne’s successors as an “autonomous ground offensive system,” with maneuverable tank treads, a laser targeting system, hear and motion sensors, a durable body and 50-caliber chainguns that fire thousands of rounds per minute. Their weakness: a vulnerable “head” unit – a design flaw that appears remedied by the time of Terminator Salvation.

T-600

First Appearance: The Terminator (mentioned); Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (human design); Terminator Salvation (redesign).

Specs: Designed by Skynet to infiltrate human Resistance cells, the 600s are dismissed by Kyle Reese as easy to spot due to their rubber skin. In T:SCC they are revealed as early-model Terminators having powerful endoskeletons capable of great strength and speed – until their servos are overly taxed – but are obvious to human eyes and relatively simple to disable. By Terminator Salvation, they’ve been reworked as hulking, eight-foot-tall monstrosities armed with a powerful cannon in place of their right arms, roaming on search-and-destroy missions.

Harvester

First Appearance: Terminator Salvation

Specs: Enormous, 80-foot-tall robotic giants with devastating shoulder-mounted cannons, the Harvesters fall somewhere between Terminators and the Hunter-Killer mechanisms employed by Skynet. The Harvesters, which work in concert with Moto-Terminators and Transports, roam the devastated environment of the future in search of human refugees, capturing them for a top-secret experiment.

Moto-Terminator

First Appearance: Terminator Salvation

Specs: Moto-Terminators are non-humanoid constructs in the form of automated high-speed motorcycles, equipped with advanced sensors and side-mounted miniguns. They work in concert with the Harvester to effectively capture or kill humans.

Hydrobot

First Appearance: Terminator Salvation

Specs: Articulated, eel-shaped and equipped with a sharp, claw-like head unit, the Hydobots are aquatic Hunter-Killers that infest and patrol the waters of the post-Judgment Day future.

T-800

First Appearance: The Terminator; Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Played by: Arnold Schwarzenegger

Specs: The ORIGINAL Big Bad of the Terminator mythology – the relentless, seemingly unstoppable killing machine. Using living tissue and biological characteristics – skin, hair, blood, sweat, even bad breath – layered on top of a nearly indestructible endoskeleton, the 800s are cunning infiltrators programmed in the use of every known military weapon, outfitted with extensive sensors and visual enhancements, and able to mimic any human voice it hears. But the most crucial bit of code in its CPU is the command to pursue and terminate its target no matter what kind of damage it suffers. Still don’t get it? Let Kyle Reese enlighten: “He’ll find her! That’s what he does! It’s ALL he does!!” One notable T-800 was captured and reprogrammed by John Connor to time travel into the past to protect his younger self from termination, and – soon demonstrating a capacity to learn and even understand human emotion – proved to be as unshakeable is its commitment to protecting as its counterparts were to killing.

T-850

First Appearance: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Played by: Arnold Schwarzenegger

Specs: An upgrade of the 800s constructed in the same image, the 850s were equipped with an increased ability to withstand punishment, improved power cells, internal programming on human emotion and psychology and self-regenerating flesh easily removed for more efficient repairs. The T-850 which ultimately killed John Connor in the future was reprogrammed by Conner’s wife Kate Brewster and sent back into the past to protect him from termination by the T-X.

T-1000

First Appearance: Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Played by: Robert Patrick

Specs: Displaying the characteristic relentlessness of all Terminators combined with a mimetic polyalloy — or “liquid metal” – shape-shifting ability, the Series 1000 is able to perfectly imitate not only human form but any specific individuals and objects that it touched, as well as an array of spiked and bladed solid metal weapon-limbs. The 1000s proved most difficult to destroy due to its extensive ability to self-recover – when damaged, even the tiniest drop of its liquid metal form was compelled to rejoin its main body. Its only apparent vulnerability: exposure to extreme temperatures.

T-X

First Appearance: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Played by: Kristana Lokken

Specs: Combining the powerful endoskeleton of the early Terminators – in a lithe female form – with the shape-changing liquid metal sheath of the T-1000s, the T-X also added a few new twists, literally, with its ability to rotate its joints 360 degrees. T-Xs also sport an onboard weapons system – effectively carrying armaments through time travel unlike other Terminator models – reconfiguring its limbs into plasma cannons, flamethrowers, and various caliber firearms. Other enhancements include a titanium fingertip drill, diamond-hard teeth, DNA analysis and the ability to link with electronic systems. But perhaps the most unique weapon in its arsenal – emotions, including the ability to get angry.

“Cameron Phillips“

First Appearance: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Played by: Summer Glau

Specs: Cameron is a unique, possibly one-of-a-kind model cast in the form of his Resistance fighter Allison Young for infiltration but reprogrammed by John Connor and sent to the past to protect his younger self. Though she does contain programming allowing her to effectively mimic a full range of human emotions, Cameron – nicknamed “Tin-Miss” – typically acts cold and emotionless, but appears to be slowly gaining an understanding of what it’s like to be human.

T-1001

First Appearance: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Played by: Shirley Manson

Specs: A slight advancement of the morphing liquid metal T-1000 series, the most prominent of the 1001s is the Terminator sent to the past to assume the identity of ZeiraCorp CEO Catherine Weaver on a mysterious mission that seemingly opposes Skynet – the first known Terminator to travel backward without the apparent intent of killing OR protecting John Connor.
