Just diese Tage ist auf dem Videouploadservice unseres Vertrauens ein Filmchen aufgetaucht, das nicht entstanden wäre, hätte ich mich nicht gegenüber meiner Dozentin durchgesetzt: Cybersex. Im Zuge der Anti-Aids-Kampagne in Semester Vier, zu der ich als Regisseur Jede Sekunde zählt beigesteuert habe (der unlängst eine fragwürdige Popularität auf Bild.de auf sich gezogen hat), entstand aus meiner Feder unter der Regie von Simone Dröge und durch die Kamera und den Schnitt von Florian Bell (der auch so zuvorkommend war, diese Perle der Filmkunst hochzuladen), ein weiterer Spot zu einem guten Zwecke, der unten zu betrachten ist. Also, abre los ojos!

I was privileged to be part of this year’s annual meeting of FOSI, the Family On-Line Safety Institute. This was the first year they invited a sex expert. So it was 400 public policy people and one sex guy—me.

The lineup of speakers was extraordinary: a Senator; senior executives from companies like Verizon and Comcast; several state Attorneys General; President Obama’s Deputy Chief Technology Officer; and dozens of heavy hitters like Adam Thierer (Progress & Freedom Foundation) and Larry Magid (ConnectSafely).

The complexity of the internet, broadband, and mobile-connected world of kids and teens which they discussed for two days had my head spinning. Preschoolers tweeting?

Everyone agreed that the online environment posed various dangers to kids; thankfully, in addition to talking about predators, these sophisticated people talk about cyberbullying and other problems that are far more common in most kids’ lives.

All speakers expressed commitment to the same thing: helping young people have safe, productive experiences online. Of course, sincere people disagree on how to define “safe” and “productive”—a common disagreement whenever sexuality is involved. That tension underlines policy discussions of adult sex-related issues, too, like the morning-after pill, prostitution, and same-sex marriage.

With this all-star lineup I didn’t have much time, but I did make the following points:

* Why do kids use the internet for various sexual activities? Why NOT? Kids are sexual (whether we like it or not), and the internet is the most powerful communications technology ever invented. Of COURSE they’ll use it for sexual purposes—just like adults do.

* How should we deal with kids sexting? The way we would deal with it if we could see beyond its sexual aspect: by talking about trust, power, privacy, and fairness, and respect.

* Parents don’t need help dealing with their kids’ sexuality online—they need help dealing with their kids’ sexuality, period. Most parents deal with their kids’ online erotic lives the way they deal with their kids’ offline erotic lives—by ignoring or problematizing them. Whether they’re talking about the internet, the playground, or hooking up, parents need to discuss sexuality with their kids beyond the context of danger and safety.

* We’re preparing our kids for lives they’re NOT going to have—lives without erotic feelings, falling in love, and sexual decision-making. In doing so, we leave them unprepared for the lives that they’re going to have—whether we’re comfortable with that or not.

* It would be great if kids were as thoughtful and careful online as many policy-makers wish they would be. But that’s expecting kids to make better decisions online than most adults do. When tens of millions of adults are hooked on their blackberries, spending too much time in chat rooms, and being deceitful about porn use or online flirting, why are we surprised when kids reveal themselves too much on facebook or by sexting?

In most states, the age at which a picture qualifies as child pornography is higher than the age of consent. And so privately, I asked the Attorney General of one western state how he could justify criminalizing pictures of teens being sexual if the sexual acts themselves were legal. He kept telling me that the pictures were illegal no matter how they were created, so that ended the conversation fairly quickly.

He was more interested in enforcing the law than in understanding how it affects the society he supposedly wants to protect. Perhaps his attitude would change if his 16-year-old son had to register as a sex offender because he’d shared a nude photo of his girlfriend.

There are, of course, some real threats to the health and safety of young people online. But sometimes the criminal justice system is one of those threats. I wish this had been discussed seriously during the two-day conference.

Se numeste Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) si a facut in ultimii ani obiectul mai multor studii si controverse. Desi deocamdata nu este inclusa in nomenclatorul bolilor psihice, multi considera ca problema dependentei de web (dar si de videogame-uri de soiul World of Warcraft) este una reala.

Cat te costa sa scapi de internet?

In luna august a acestui an, dezbaterile pe aceasta tema au revenit in centrul atentiei, dupa ce Heavensfield Retreat Center din Fall City, Washington, a anuntat lansarea primului program de dezintoxicare de web din Statele Unite, amplasat, in mod ironic, la doar cateva mile de cartierul general al Microsoft din Redmond, Seattle. In aceeasi perioada, in Romania, un raport prezentat de Comisia Europeana arata ca 64% din romani nu au folosit niciodata internetul.

Si totusi, nu se poate sa nu-i fi observat, pe cei care nu se pot detasa psihologic si comportamental de lumea jocurilor online sau de cea a social networking-ului sunt peste tot. Poate chiar tu esti unul dintre ei. Ridica mana daca te consideri dependent de internet. Hai, ca n-o sa te judece nimeni (de altfel, cine ar putea s-o faca, doar toata lumea e online?!).

Contra unei sume de 14.500 de dolari (WiFi-ul nu este inclus!), se considera ca un astfel de “addict” poate fi salvat de el insusi si de lumea lui virtuala la capatul a 45 de zile de abstinenta totala de internet, petrecute la Heavensfield Retreat Center; iesit de aici, “bolnavul” va pasi “ca nou” in lumea reala, complet vindecat de obsesia pentru Facebook, Second Life, online gambling si, de ce nu, chiar si de cea pentru sms-uri.

Fondatorii centrului considera dependenta de internet o problema extrem de serioasa, avand in vedere statisticile care spun ca afecteaza intre 6 si 10% din populatia internauta. Cum stii ca esti unul dintre ei? O lista de 12 “semne si simptome” a fost postata pe pagina de web a noului asa-numit “reStart Internet Addiction Recovery Program”, si contine indicatori precum “o crescuta stare de spirit euforica cand esti implicat in activitati pe internet”, “necinste fata de cei din jur” si “schimbari fizice precum ingrasare sau pierdere in greutate, dureri de spate, de cap si sindrom de tunel carpian” (cea din urma fiind acea durere persistenta in incheietura mainii, provocata de utilizarea frenetica a tastaturii).

Iar daca, potrivit specialistilor site-ului, trei sau patru raspunsuri afirmative la intrebarile din chestionar sugereaza ca faci “abuz de internet”, cinci si peste cinci indica fara echivoc dependenta.

Mai precis, in vreme ce primul criteriu este: “Ai o dorinta puternica sau impulsul de a utiliza internetul”, ajungand la numarul 4, trebuie sa-ti marturisesti daca, in situatia in care “constient fiind de efectele daunatoare, nu poti renunta totusi la a mai utiliza internetul”. Te pomenesti ca trebuie toti sa ne internam?!

Sevraj tehnologic

Primul pacient inscris in acest programul american se numeste Ben Alexander din Iowa City, are 19 ani, iar jocul lui preferat era pana nu demult World of Warcraft (cunoscatorii stiu de ce). “Il jucam pana adormeam cu capul pe tastatura”, a povestit el intr-un interviu acordat unui post de televiziune.

Intrucat programul se mandreste cu faptul ca le ofera pacientilor tratamente individualizate, in cazul lui Alexander, acest lucru a presupus acordarea unei atentii sporite fostelor hobby-uri ale tanarului: biologia si crosurile cross-country. In prezent, iesit de la “rehab”, desi nu se “vede” renuntand in totalitate la internet, considera ca a revenit totusi la un mod de viata mai “echilibrat”.

De altfel, promovarea unui mod de viata lipsit de accesul la internet nu este intentia fondatorilor clinicii. “Noi nu suntem anti-tehnologie”, afirma Hilary Cash, director executiv al centrului. “Este vorba doar despre a le ajuta pe persoanele dependente de tehnologie sa depaseasca sevrajul si sa se reintegreze psihologic in lumea reala intr-un mod pozitiv”.

“Moda” dezintoxicarii de internet nu este nici pe departe una lansata de americani. “Atat China, cat si Coreea de Sud au desemnat dependenta de internet ca problema de sanatate publica numarul 1″, au precizat fondatorii programului american intr-un comunicat de presa. “Prin comparatie, Statele Unite au fost mai lente in a recunoaste si reactiona la acesta problema, si de-abia acum apar primele masuri concrete. Programul nostru este parte din acest proces”.

Picatura chinezeasca: tratament militaresc extrem pentru internauti

In China, un numar de peste 400 clinici private de reabilitare isi ofera de ani buni serviciile celor 10 milioane de adolescenti chinezi dependenti de web, potrivit estimarilor: adica 10% din cele 100 de milioane de utilizatori de internet din tara.

Anul trecut, intr-o zi de sambata, Deng Senshan, un baiat de 16 ani, a fost trimis de parinti (contra sumei de 7.000 de yuani, cam o mie de dolari) pentru o luna de tratament la Guangxi Qihuang Survival Training Camp in sudul Chinei. Rupt in bataie, tinut “la izolare”, si umilit de antrenori pentru ca alerga prea incet, a fost gasit mort o zi mai tarziu (duminica dimineata), din motive care nu au fost facute publice.

Un alt exemplu este si cel al lui Pu Liang, in varsta de 14 ani, internat si el in “rehab”-ul de la Chengdu, capitala provinciei Sichuan, pentru a i se trata dependenta de internet. Potrivit China Daily, dupa cateva zile Pu a fost transportat la spital de stafful institutiei, doctorii declarand ulterior ca acesta a fost batut cu cruzime. Diagnosticul? Apa la plamani si functia renala afectata.

La un alt Internet Addiction Treatment Center din Daxing, langa Beijing, copiii dedependenti de jocuri online, pornografie, cybersex si chat (cu parinti apartinand clasei de nouveau riche din China) sunt “tratati” cu instructie militara “pe bune”, centrul fiind de altfel condus de un fost colonel de armata, cu fonduri subventionate de guvern.

“Am devenit dependent treptat”, a declarat Li Yanlin, un student ale carui note au scazut dramatic dupa ce a devenit dependent de jocurile de pe internet. Dar dupa cateva saptamani in campusul din Daxing, baiatul in varsta de 18 ani le-a cerut parintilor sa-l “lase la vatra”, intrucat “a recunoscut falsitatea jocurilor online.”

Potrivit conducerii clinicii, unde un “sejur” costa in jur de 10,000 de yuani (1.290 dolari), abordarea militara a tratarii dependentei de internet este una necesara intr-o tara cu peste doua milioane de adolescenti dependenti. “Multi dintre cei internati aici tin foarte rar cont de sentimentele celorlalti. Antrenamentul militar este menit a-i face sa simta cum este cand faci parte dintr-o echipa”, a declarat psiholgul Xu Leiting. De la inaugurarea stabilimentului din 2004 si pana anul trecut, aici au fost “cazati” peste 1.500 de adolescenti, cu o rata de succes de 70%.

Bun venit in IAD! Afla daca esti dependent

In opinia psihiatrului american Jerald Block, dependenta de internet este o dereglare compulsiva atat de raspandita incat ar trebui inclusa fara doar si poate in urmatoarea editie a nomenclatorului bolilor psihice (DSM-V), programat sa apara in 2011.

DSM (“Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder”), publicat din 1952 incoace de Asociatia Americana de Psihiatrie, reprezinta un soi de “biblie” a psihiatriei mondiale, instrumentul de referinta preferat al specialistilor din lumea intreaga. Se stie deja ca noua versiune, la care se lucreaza de ani buni, va cuprinde printre cazurile de dereglare psihica si asa-numitul “shopping dezinhibat”, raportul obsesiv cu mancarea si problemele legate de identitatea sexuala. Si de ce nu, si dependenta de internet.

Intr-adevar, exista o psihopatologie in toata puterea cuvantului asociata asa-numitei dependente cauzate de abuzul de internet, ale carei simtome sunt considerate de unii specialisti similare cu cele ale dependentei de substante. Vi s-a intamplat vreodata sa va treziti noaptea si sa simtiti nevoia incontrolabila de a va controla e-mailul? Sa inchideti computerul si sa simtiti un gol teribil pentru ca lumea reala nu ma are nicio consistenta? Sa va identificati cu avatarul atribuit propriului nickname? Acestea sunt semnele evidente ale acestei boli, termenul de “Internet Addiction Disorder – IAD” datorandu-se psihiatrului american Ivan Goldberg, autorul criteriilor de diagnosticare a acestei maladii. Iata care sunt principale simptome ale IAD, conform criteriilor lui Goldberg.

1. Nevoia de a petrece tot mai mult timp in retea pentru a obtine satisfactii emotionale;
2. Reducerea semnificativa a interesului pentru alte activitati care nu au legatura cu internetul;
3. Dezvoltarea, dupa suspendarea sau diminuarea utilizarii netului, a unei stari de agitatie psihomotorie, anxietate, depresie, ganduri obsesive cu privire la ceea ce se intampla online, clasicele simptome ale abstinentei;
4. Necesitatea de a fi online tot mai des sau pentru perioade de timp prelungite fata de intentia initiala;
5. Imposibilitatea de a intrerupe sau de a tine sub control utilizarea internetului;
6. Petrecerea a peste 8 ore / zi online si dedicarea unui timp indelungat activitatilor corelate netului.
7. A continua utilizarea internetului in pofida unor probleme generate de utilizarea excesiva a acestuia, fie ele fizice, sociale, psihologice sau la locul de munca.

Si inainte sa va ingrijoreze eventualul “exces de emailuri sau de sms-uri”, e bine sa stiti ca orice dependenta implica niste mecanisme specifice:

• toleranta (care constrange la cresterea continua a “dozei” pentru a obtine efectul dorit, cel de la inceput),
• abstinenta (cu aparitia simptomelor specifice reducerii sau suspendarii unui anumit stimul)
• si asa-numitul “craving”, pofta nepotolita care, nesatisfacuta, cauzeaza suferinta psihica intensa, uneori chiar fizica, insotitta de ganduri fixe, lipsa foamei si a setei, iritabilitate, insomnie, depresie si in cazurile cele mai grave, senzatii de depersonalizare.

Prin urmare, cat de dependenti sunteti de internet?

• Because murder is a terrible thing, the state of Alaska wants to outlaw films depicting murder.
• Because physical abusing and raping women is a terrible thing, the state of Alaska wants to outlaw TV programs showing this.
• Because sexually exploiting children is a terrible thing, the state of Alaska wants to outlaw drawings that show adult cartoon characters having sex with child cartoon characters.

All three of those are ridiculous, but the last one is true.

Americans are not allowed to look at photographs of actual children being sexual with actual adults. In fact, pictures don’t have to show kids having sex to be illegal—they just have to show “lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area.” “Lascivious” is defined by whatever 12 people who couldn’t get out of jury duty decide it is, which has already included children wearing bathing suits.

Americans are not even allowed to look at photos of actual children whose non-sexual images have been computer-manipulated to look as if the child is being sexual with an adult.

Alaska wants to criminalize cartoons that remind people of pictures they’re not allowed to look at. That would be like criminalizing paintball shoot-outs because they remind some people of actual killings.

The legislators and prosecutors behind this proposal believe that because the cartoons are disgusting, they should be outlawed. They say the cartoons encourage bad thoughts in adults, and can be used to encourage children to comply with invitations for molestation.

No one can say these things aren’t true, of course. What we can say is that none of that creates an exemption from our Constitutional protections. Alaskans own a huge number of guns—and they defend their right to do so, even though guns encourage bad thoughts in adults, and are often used to coerce or harm others.

As Joan Bertin of National Coalition Against Censorship says, the would-be illegal cartoons “represent someone’s fantasy life. When you start regulating that kind of matter, you are getting into thought control, and that is very dangerous.” Federal Judge Roger Gregory agreed when he dissented in the conviction of a Virginia man for owning some Japanese cartoons, encouraging the defendant to take his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. He called it “government regulation of private thoughts, convicting a man for the victimless ‘crime’ of privately communicating his personal fantasies.”

Aaron Sperbeck of the Anchorage DA’s Office is driving the new law, encouraged by Alaska’s House Judiciary chair Rep. Jay Ramras. The images he has in mind “are almost as graphic and disturbing as real children.” Alaska Assistant U.S. Attorney Audrey Renschen says of anime, “even though a real child wasn’t used, it still sexualizes the child [who someone might show it to].”

That’s a lot of “what ifs.” These professional lawyers—working for a District Attorney and a U.S. Attorney—apparently don’t understand the principle that in America, we jail people for breaking the law, not for having the means of breaking the law, or for enjoying disgusting ideas.

• Don’t rush the relationship. This is easy to do, given that online relationships tend to start from the inside and progress outward. You tell each other the most intimate secrets you hold long before you get to the part about your favorite color. The level of connection makes it feel more natural to leap to Decisions About The Future way too soon.
• Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can separate online life from offline life. What happens online doesn’t stay online — even if you never meet with the person offline, your emotions are not confined to the Internet.
