“Rural kids do not have the same opportunities as urban kids so their independence is significantly delayed until they get their licence; as a result they have to rely on their parents to get around.”

Problem:

An independent option for transport for rural kids is cycling. But cycling in NZ is a risky business; on average 225 children of aged 10 to 14 are hospitalized a year. Open/rural roads take up 10% of all cycling crashes and over half the cycling deaths are on open roads. The faster a car is going the harder it is to avoid hitting a cyclist. A driver driving at 50km/hr will travel 37 meters after braking before coming to a complete halt. The same driver going at a 100km/hr will move 5 meters further before even reacting and will travel a further 69 meters before halting completely. The speed in which cyclists are hit often determines how badly they will be hurt. A cyclist struck at 32km/hr has a 95% chance of surviving. A cyclist struck at 48km/hr has a 55% chance of survival. But a cyclist struck at 70km+/hr has a survival of virtually zero.

Solution:

New Zealand needs to get proper cycle lanes, away from the roadway where possible. 35 million dollars has been put aside for the creation of cycle lanes for tourists while the roads for New Zealand resident cyclists aren’t safe. This money should go towards cycle lanes, giving Rural open roads priority.

Lower the speed limit on open roads.

Better car drivers’ education and better cyclist education, as many cyclist ride 2 abreast/3 abreast where they should not, and ride through red lights etc. Fines for offending cyclists and motorists (higher fines) and emphasis from police to tackle these problems.

Cyclists of all ages get injured, but children of ages 10-14 get injured most. On average 225 children of aged 10 to 14 are hospitalized a year. This is the main age group that we are targeting for independence in Rural areas. Open roads take up 10% of all cycling crashes. Cyclist are found to be mostly responsible for only 27% of cycle crashes with a vehicle. As the severeness of the crash increases cyclist are found to be more at fault.

Speed:

The faster a car is going the harder it is to avoid hitting a cyclist.

John and James went for a quick blast out to the West of Harrogate this evening with the lights on and after the rush hour.

We left Harrogate along Whinney Lane before heading through Beckwithshaw and out and up towards Little Almscliffe Crag where we were rewarded with great views of the night lights thanks to a nice clear evening. From there it was down to Norwood, past the Sun Inn and a return to Harrogate via Penny Pot Lane.

A great way to spend an evening and beats spending an hour in the garage on the turbo-trainer!!

My heel was felling better from the few stretches I’ve been going with it. Steady swim and a nice brisk hour’s turbo on the menu, a solid day’s training.

The cat’s been feeling a bit under the weather lately, we reckon. She’s slept for almost 24 hours solid and I know cats can sleep a lot, but that’s unusual for her. Last night she had her dinner and then took herself off to bed (she sleeps on a cushion in the conservatory) at 7pm. Maybe she had a bad night’s sleep when it was windy the night before and needed to catch up a bit.

Heya ppl. Your friendly neighbourhood wide eyed cyclist offering another update on Project: Carboni

Heya ppl. Your friendly neighbourhood wide eyed cyclist offering another update on Project: Carbonize My Ride!!! I swear I made the biggest newbie mistake ever… *groan*

So here I was bringing my bike and frame (picture cycling on 1 bike, with the frame <handlebars n forks all attached> slung across my back. Wasn’t pretty…) to Soon Seng to swap the parts over. And horror of all horrors, the mechanic told me that my front derailleur bracket that was attached to the carbon frame was a braze-on version, while the 0ne coming off my Merida was a clamp on version. So it can’t be done without me getting a new braze on front Derailleur, and he didn’t have any. So I had to cycle home (again, not pretty) thoroughly defeated and disheartened by the experience… Was super damn sad, but my never-say-die attitude kicked in..

This time, I decided to send my bike into another bike shop… Rodalink in the east. Rodalink is the distributor of Shimano parts… so I figured that if they didn’t have the ability to get the part, who did? So happily (this time I used my car and bike rack) I drove down to Rodalink to get a 2nd opinion…

Basically, the 2nd opinion was the same as the 1st. Cept that these guys could actually order the part in… which could take anything from a week to 3 months. On its own, a braze-on derailleur doesn’t seem hard to find, but I needed a braze-on derailleur for a TRIPLE crankset. Now, THAT is hard to get… By this time, I had almost given up hope and so just agreed to leave my frame (Got confirmation from the Rodalink mechanic who was V experienced in frame from the 90s that my carbon frame’s actually a Trek carbon from ‘95… woohoo…) at the shop and wait for the parts.

So now I’m going to play the waiting game and wait for the part to come in while cycling on my heavy assed Merida bike for now…. Its the *grumble* engine that counts anyway…*grumble grumble*

*New update: I’m gonna call up all the major shops in Singapore to check for the part. Finger’s crossed for the part 4!!! Hopefully I can wrap this one up by then!!

*Anyone out there with a kind heart and a good soul that has a Braze-on Front Derailleur for a Triple Crankset to donate?? Please?? Leave your contact details in the comments section if you have anything at all…

This is looking to be quite an epic topic…

A factor that is driving the trend towards automating the sales department is the extent to which sp

A factor that is driving the trend towards automating the sales department is the extent to which speed has become a strategic advantage in the selling process. Once, it was acceptable for salespeople to promise to get back to customers with answers to questions. Increasingly, those salespeople are finding that by the time they get back to their customers with the necessary information, the sales opportunity has evaporated. The ability to respond to customers quickly is crucial to success, and the tolerances are narrower than ever before.

Similarly, the ability to compress the sales order cycle is becoming an extremely significant factor in a competitive situation. Your customers, who are under the same competitive pressures as you, are placing more and more emphasis on increased cash flow and reduced inventories. Reducing your sales order cycle from four days to two can make an important and measurable difference, certainly enough of a difference to determine whether or not you get the order.

I use it in my work every day as a therapist to help people understand their personality and find their pathway through life.”
–Jean-Francois Beltrami, counselor and kinesiologist

Welcome to Lucy Harmer’s Shamanic Astrology monthly forecast for the Northern Hemisphere! Each month Lucy shares inspiration and ideas for the coming weeks from her book Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign.

Shamanic Astrology is based on the study of the movement of the sun and the moon during the different seasons of the year. There are twelve astrological ‘”signs” which are represented by twelve different spirit animals. To find out your own personal spirit animal sign (the sign you were born under), please check the table of spirit animals at the end of this article. Shamanic Astrology teaches us that inner power derives from knowing the properties, characteristics, and qualities of each spirit animal (known as their “medicine”), and applying this in our own lives.

Each month I will focus on the spirit animal for that month, and describe the “energy” of the month itself and also the influence of the moon. I will also indicate which other spirit animal signs will find this month to be particularly beneficial, and why.

November 22-December 21: OWL

Month of Hibernation and Long Nights

Spirit Animal Sign of the Month:
Owl is the spirit animal which corresponds to November 22 – December 21 (in the northern hemisphere). If you were born at this time, your spirit animal sign is Owl and you share Owl’s strengths of being fair, honest, wise, philosophical, idealistic, optimistic, and independent. You are someone who enjoys the good life! You may also share some of Owl’s weaknesses and can have a tendency to be restless, negligent, intolerant, proud, irresponsible, tactless, superficial and excessively optimistic.

Medicine: Owl’s medicine is the ability to seek out truth and justice in all
circumstances. This can be used in any ambiguous or unclear situation, to find the path to follow and to restore order.
Element: Fire
Stone: Obsidian
Color: Gold
Plant: Mistletoe

Energy of the season:
Owl’s month, which ends with the winter solstice, is that of hibernation and long nights. The sun is at its lowest in the sky and the nights are at their longest. This is a period for introspection, spiritual seeking, visions, plans and preparation for the future. Everything undertaken during this month will need a greater dose of enthusiasm, spontaneity, and optimism than at other times and will have to be on a sound ethical basis. Projects conceived now are often highly ambitious.

Energy of the moon:
Owl’s new moon started on Nov 16th and the full moon is on December 2nd 2009. The period from November 22nd until December 2nd is the ideal time for conceiving or launching projects. These will have a high rate of success, as long as they have a sound ethical foundation. After the full moon, from December 3rd until 15th December, time is best used for introspection and deep spiritual growth. This is a time for learning from the past and for setting new goals for the future. December 16th brings the new moon in Snow Goose; this is a time for putting new structures in place for the year to come, with much determination.

This month is particularly favorable for the following signs:

Owl:
If your sign is Owl the energy of this month is very favorable because it corresponds to the month and the moon of your birth. A new cycle is about to start in your life and this is the best time to start planting seeds. Use the sun’s energy to take stock and head off in a new direction.

Falcon/Salmon:
If your sign is Falcon or Salmon, this is a very lucky month for you, with lots of harmony because you are in your own fire element. A multitude of opportunities will open up for you in this period and this is the best time to give destiny a helping hand!

Raven/Otter:
For Raven and Otter people, this is a very dynamic month, full of energy which favors the conception and birth of new projects. You will feel new motivation and a renewal of your energy at this time.

Table of Spirit Animal Signs:

To find your spirit animal sign, just locate your birthday from the dates below, according to your place of birth. If you were born north of the equator (eg; USA, Canada, Europe), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Northern Hemisphere.” If you were born south of the equator (eg; Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Southern Hemisphere.”

Do you still read the travel pages of the weekend newspapers? No, I thought not.

Of all the dumbing-down that’s taken place in newspapers, the travel pages seem to have come off worst. If you look down at the bottom of almost any story, you’ll see those dreaded words, that the journalist was “a guest of” this or that company.

The journalist’s ticket and accommodation has invariably been paid for by a PR firm, and the story is little more than a marketing exercise. Both participants are co-conspirators: the journalist gets a free junket and the destination gets press coverage; and sadly the reader gets fed a load of drivel.

And on the rare occasion that a journalist has paid their own way, they’ve rarely stayed long enough to get a true impression of the place; just enough time to bash out 500 words of clichés and ill-considered assertions before climbing back onto the plane.

We all travel much more than we used to, but I can’t help but worry that as we travel more, we see less. We get a superficial impression of seeing a new place, without really understanding it. And sadly this superficial journalism doesn’t help us to understand the world any better.

But don’t despair, dear reader, I’m about to provide you with the perfect antidote.

Back in June I was on a training run through the forest south of Brussels when I bumped into a friend, Koen.

Because of the European elections, it had been a while since we’d spoken. As we jogged through the woods we chatted and caught up. Then he casually announced that he was about to quit his job in Parliament and cycle to Beijing.

“In China?” I asked, slightly amazed.

“In China!” he replied.

“Wow” was all I could muster.

This was to be a conversation he would be destined to repeat with everyone he met along the way.

And so in July he set off from Amsterdam with a sturdy German-made bike, a tent, sleeping bag, and all the paraphernalia that you need to see you through winter in central Asia.

He would be writing an account of his trip and posting it online whenever he could find an internet connection. What followed was some wonderful storytelling: his writing is thoughtful, witty, emotional, observant and carefully considered, and with stunning photography to boot (see the photo above). If the travel pages of the weekend newspapers carried this sort of writing, the newspaper industry would be in better health.

He’s currently somewhere on the Kazakh Steppe and winter is closing in. I urge you though to start from the beginning and follow the trip though.

John and James were joined this morning by Rob, Sarah and Lyn to make the most of some unexpected early morning sunshine. The forecast was for heavy showers and high winds….

We followed the same route as last Sunday’s ride as a few were nursing hangovers and an easy flat ride was what the doctor had ordered. The ride was going nicely until we turned south at Aldborough, by which time the wind had picked up a bit and yes, we were headed into it for the next 15 miles all the way to Wetherby!

We did manage to keep a reasonable pace though until we got blasted by a shower coming into Wetherby, so we heaed for the shelter of The Shambles Cafe before heading back to Harrogate via Kirk Deighton, Spofforth and Follifoot, where James peeled off for roast at his parents. Once again a very nice ride albeit a slightly windy one!

AM. Cycle 105km (26.0 km/h). Oxford City club run to Winslow, HR122(155), ascent 645m My turn to lea

AM. Cycle 105km (26.0 km/h). Oxford City club run to Winslow, HR122(155), ascent 645m

My turn to lead the club run today. Cycling up the Cowley road I saw a couple of other club runs on their way out of Oxford – Mid Oxon CRT (with Claire Vallance in their midst), and then a short while after them the Oxonian CC “President’s run” with Mick Bowen at the head. I got to Martyrs’ Memorial at 8:55am and there was noone there, I wondered if the clocks had changed or something! Eventually though, we got 10 riders, including one young lad in just a shirt and shorts - looked cold for the day. It was fairly gloomy out, but as I led the bunch out of Oxford with Henry Martin from the OUCC we had a nice tailwind.

Somewhere around Hardwick or Hethe it started raining and we all stopped and put rain jackets on (if we had them). We got soaked through pretty quickly and the temperature seemed to have dropped. There was a general feeling that we ought not to stop, and to take a shorter route back to Oxford – I knew that from Gawcott we could take a road straight back to Brill, avoiding Winslow altogether.

Riding into Gawcott though, I hit a pothole rather hard and my rear wheel bounced on the rim – it’d been losing pressure. I stopped to put in a new tube. Not easy with cold wet hands and the first time I fitted one, that punctured straight away too – I’d not located the shard of glass that was the cause. Eventually I had everything straight and we were on our way again. We’d all got rather cold hanging about at the side of the road and we just put our heads down into the stiff headwind and rode on through the rain. It did start to ease off after a while, but if you weren’t on the front of the bunch you got a right soaking off the wheels in front – only two of us had full mudguards.

Crossing the A41 and heading for Brill it was clear that the lad in the shirt and shorts (he turned out to have a rain jacket with him, at least) was struggling. He’d run out of energy, and I guessed that he was getting very cold. Since we were nearly on familiar roads I told John to go on with the bunch back to Oxford and I’d guide this lad home. I stopped him so he could eat an energy bar (stuffed in his under-saddle bag rather than where he could reach it in his back pocket). He was so cold he couldn’t undo the wrapper so I helped him with that. I found out his name was Paul and he was a bit of a runner, so he was fit but not used to cycling any great distance in adverse weather. We took it very steady back home – an average of 21km/h for those last 18km back to the ring road. Even a slight increase in my pressure on the pedals would drop Paul instantly. Eventually I got him back to the ring road at Marston where he could ride around the cycle path to his home in Wolvercote. I wished him well, said that perhaps next week he’d better wear another layer, and then headed back to Cowley. Some weak sunshine was coming through the clouds as I pedalled home.

I was fairly tired after all that riding in the rain. Jules had tidied away the plates and glasses from last night’s dinner, so I dozed a bit on the sofa in the afternoon. I think I might have to put a bit on the club run webpage explaining that you ought to be properly dressed for the time of year.

Changes can have a profound affect on the nervous system, even when the changes were consciously chosen. It seems the more relaxed into it one becomes, the universe has a way of bringing challenges or obstacles to test fortitude. It can be so easy at this point to fall back into the “comfort zone” that may have been the cause of endless issues, especially when confronted by the prospect of a different load of rubbish. Turning back may seem easy but we do have to consider how detrimental that situation was, otherwise why did we make changes at all. This stage is what I consider to be “Riding the Storm”, most of the seemingly new challenges were already there, hidden beneath the mountain of concerns utmost in mind. With that out-of-the-way the rest can reveal themselves and here is where we may assume the wrong choice was made and it will go away if we turn back, I can assure you it won’t. Going back may seem right for a while, then the whole cycle will repeat again and here we will be once again. This pattern can continue repeatedly, with different people and different places until such time we make a conscious choice to “Ride the Storm”

All of us have been on earth many, many lifetimes so that we can learn and grow and move forward in

All of us have been on earth many, many lifetimes so that we can learn and grow and move forward in our progression as a spirit in a body. Some of us have been on the planet many thousands of lifetimes. Others of us are younger but still have many hundreds of visits to the planet.

The number of our lifetimes depends on how often we choose to come back. It all depends on what we want to learn as a soul. Some of us are very specific on what we want to learn and choose specific times on earth to be part of. Then there others who come back to learn on a human relationship level and do so for many lifetimes. Or whatever it is for that soul.

Some of us come back quite regularly and have racked up a hundred thousand lifetimes or more. Then others come back every now and then every thousand or so lifetimes.

As souls we are all different ages also. Some of us have been here a very long time. Others are younger. So at any given time on the planet there are many different ages of souls all learning and growing at the same time.

Based on our soul ages we all progress through different levels of learning and experiences from Infant Souls to Old Souls.

There are five soul ages that we progress through during our cycle on the physical plane. Infant souls deal with issues of survival; Baby souls have a need for structure and tend to live according to beliefs based on dogma, such as religion. Young souls are success oriented and set high standards of personal achievement. Mature souls are relationship fixated and tend to gravitate towards emotional drama, and Old souls try to seek the larger perspective of life, and have less interest in playing the material game.

INFANT SOULS

Infant souls are like infants and children. The Infant soul Age is to the soulis comparable to the first decade of a life for a person. Even as children are learning to walk and talk, so Infant souls are learning the basics of getting around in the world.

BABY SOULS

Baby souls are a lot like teenagers. Teens are in that awkward stage between childhood and adulthood. Like people in the second decade of life, Baby souls are going through a lot of changes in the growing-up process.

YOUNG SOUL AGE

After the juvenile years of adolescence comes the time of young adulthood. The Young soul is a young person that is like an adult before middle age. The perceptions and activities of the Young soul are similar in description to a person in the third and fourth decades of a life span.

MATURE SOUL

After the years of youth and early adulthood comes the time of middle age. Mature souls are like an adult in middle age. They are at the peak of their lives: beyond the folly of youth, yet before the decay of old age. Like people in the fifth and sixth decades of life, much of their experience is behind them.

OLD SOUL

At the end of a full life comes the time of old age. An Old soul is like an old person. Usually old people have traveled to many places and done many things. They are a storehouse of wisdom and understanding because of this range of experience.

Each soul group has 7 levels within each group that they progress through before they move on into the next age group. And each of the 7 levels is a distinct maturing of this particular soul.

Hopped on the turbo after work, did a brisk hour or so. Legs fairly tired although my sore heel seemed much better today.

Jules had her appointment at the hand clinic this afternoon. Despite having an appointment time she still had to wait 2 hours. They aren’t going to do anything to help her hand get better other than give her some exercises to do, which seems a bit crap to me – the knuckle will always be a bit displaced, we reckon. The exercises will help to strengthen the tendons around it and pull it back into shape, but it’s a less than perfect solution, I’m sure. When I damaged my little finger a couple of years ago I said I played the piano and got an operation to straighten it out – it wasn’t even broken that time.

73.8kg

The Sponsor Bikeride 2010 will take place in September and we will cycle from Arnhem (NL) to Hamburg (GE). That’s approximately 530km!

More details will be posted here or on our website as soon as they come available.
